To be fair, making a complete garbage embarrassment of a game still demonstrates more initiative and experience with game design than a lot of other applicants would have. If he had made something like this on a smaller scale and didn't sell it for 25 dollars, it really would be the sort of early project that most devs throw out and learn from for their future work. I don't forgive him for selling and defending this trash, but there's always room for people to improve.
What's funny about that is he announced that new job on Twitter and was torn apart. I get the impression he has troll like tendencies because he had to know that would be the reaction. I'm torn on wether he gets off on drama or if he uses it as an excuse to explain his poor work. In his response on steam he blamed the haters for the poor quality because they pressured him to release it. I highly recommend reading it if you need a laugh. "This community loves drama. Drama drama drama... disgusting". I would argue charging 25 dollars for a broken game is more disgusting than drama in the gaming community but whatever.

I just can't stop giggling every time that I see the protagonist's face. His features in general - these "cool scars", this "anime haircut", even his eyes - are so, I don't know, try-hard, edgy or whatever. Like he's Sonic in human form. And then he starts talking with that "badass" voice, and everything that he says is always full of pathos, and then you get these special thanks to Hideo Kojima on top of that. So I just can't help it, it's so pathetic! it's hard to believe that it wasn't intentional, but it really wasn't!
It's amazing how much cringe this game's dialogue provides. I like melodramatic stories, but man this is some middle-school level writing. That conversation with the ship captain almost made me achieve the cringe singularity. The creator must have really thought he was being deep and edgy, but this game is as deep as a puddle and edgy as a spork.
God that scene with the captain is the most "I'm overclocking my brain to write deep dialogue" scene ever. Not to mention all the stolen lines. "You have my permission to die." Really?! At least when Duke is stealing lines it's tongue in cheek

And according to Dr. Mossman the Combine don't even know it's there yet, so it shouldn't be from his 20 years as a pirate either, because it's a deserted derelict in the middle of nowhere with no one around it!
Man don't even bother, literally NOTHING makes sense story wise in this somehow still existing garbage of a game. The simple fact that they made cutscenes breaks everything that Half Life stands for.
The best thing about this story is that because HL presumes the multiverse theory is correct, they could've just passed the plot as something that happens in a parallel universe.
Aperture Science became a private science company after losing the contract and became very successful too with the help of GLaDOS, just some lore for Aperture not related but felt like it needed to be said.
You know, the idea of an embittered HECU soldier left scarred by Gordon Freeman and villified by the new world Combine order that fought his own way through Black Mesa and survived on his own to present day just to fight alongside the man he was ordered to kill sounds awesome. Creating a character that we can sympathize with and come to really enjoy, like Alyx Vance. I dunno HOW the creator managed to fuck up an idea for a character this bad.
Even Gearbox didn't manage to mess up "what if we humanized the bad guys from the first game" this badly. The Half-Life marines seem a lot more reasonable when you see how badly they're getting their asses kicked in OpFor, and when as far as they've been told know the Resonance Cascade was intentional & the whole staff of Black Mesa were responsible.

The only way the writers could remotely pass that off is if Adam wore a PCV, which, considering he is a Black Ops and that the PCV was only available for the HECU, makes no fucking sense, and that's being said without considering the fact that 99% of OpFor isn't canon.

Isnt he an HECU trooper, who were just as agile as Gordan in Half Life, and Opposing Force showed that they did have a HUD just like the HEV suits, so why is Mitchell portrayed to not have the same gear as any of the dozens of other HECU troopers at Black Mesa?

I feel like hecu marines and black ops both learning they werent on the right side of the black mesa incident and being forced to work together could make for a pretty interesting narrative if it was done any better
The weird thing is, watching this gives me the impression that despite the numerous, glaring, horrific flaws, it seems like whoever made this game really was trying to make something they cared about. The references to Opposing Force, the fact that they even bothered adding a "secret" ending at all, it's fucking bizarre. I don't know all the details of this game's production, maybe it was just some young guy who really liked Half-Life and wanted to develop a passion project love-letter for it, but didn't have the patience or the technical skills to fine-tune it into a game that was actually enjoyable?
The problem is that the same guy reeled in other people, mismanaged them, stole assets, and then had the gall to sell his bad product under an IP he didn't own.

President Keemstar is the best part of it all. Whilst I have to give every other voice actor credit for actually trying, Keemstar seems to be the only one realizing the state of things, giving a performance the project deserves. It's like Battlefield Earth and watching Travolta chew scenery like there's no tomorrow... whilst everyone around him tries to be deadly serious.

Considering the entire planet is under siege I doubt the UK would send anyone with their own nation at risk, especially not the S.A.S. They could have just been civs that survived the initial attack and got their weapons off dead soldiers.

It truly is darkest before the sunrise. We got this, and then not long later, we got the final version of Black Mesa, and Half Life: Alyx. Not to mention significant updates to Tripmine Studio’s remakes of Blueshift and OP4. And, to top it all off, HL: Alyx ends with what is essentially a promise that more Half Life is coming. This game was the final cruel joke the universe had for Half Life fans, before finally being kind for once.

there's not even an armor hud or a health hud to keep track of your health at all times, neither ammo. did they skip the opposing force's bootcamp?, at least in OF it tells you that you're using a PCV which is a military adaption of the HEV suit.
Nah it's a purpose built piece of military equipment. The HECU were a very special branch with purpose made gear to deal with the XEN if things went shady. The armor was resistant against the hostile environment of Xen and was decide to track the users status, as well as provide extra carrying space for ammo. In HDTF it's just a stupid stock urban combat uniform. Why wouldn't you make use of the iconography?

when i played the arctic section and got struck down by "the hand of god" that scared the shit out of me, there was literally no way of knowing you'd get sent to the next dimension. atleast barney and the rebels tell you about the damn mortar thing, but this game just expects you to know just about everything.

The most inexplicable plot element for me is the City 17 part. So, first of all, MOINT PAN decides not to take a few representatives, officers and such and asking for an audience with Breen (or heck, just trying to communicate with the Combine. They DO have radios on that ship after 17 years? They somehow managed to procure food, weapons and ammunition so it would be logical they have a radio, radar, sonar, literally EVERYTHING TO KEEP A SHIP TOGETHER FOR 17 YEARS, ESPECIALLY A TANKER SHIP YOU TURNED INTO FLOATING BARRACKS FOR A SMALL ARMY?) But discount that, he decides that somehow the best way to have a diplomatic encounter with the Combine sympathizers is to blow up a train station gate, then run around making an ass of himself until the Metrocops subdue him. Nothing short of brilliant. As contrivance would have it, he is brought before Boris, who purposefully moves along the Gman's plan by accepting his help. I wonder what he told Breen to convince him, but from what we've seen it's likely in this AU Breen is also manipulated by the Gman? The Gman isn't as much pulling the strings as he is tying a rope around everyone and yanking them along. So okay, by the time he allies with the Combine Gordon is "in" Black Mesa East. All he did there amounts to meet up with Eli and Alyx and play fetch with Dog. Let's give the writers more credit than they're due and assume "being" in Black Mesa East means they knew Gordon was coming to Black Mesa East from Judith Mossman watching the call between Kleiner and Eli and wanted to intercept him there. This means the meeting takes place between the point Gordon is branded as an Anticitizen and the point he's given the hovercraft to reach BME. Which means that, somehow, they finalized the deal (even though Mitchell's greatest qualification for wanting to hunt down Freeman is that he hates him, and apparently that's enough to entrust him to take part in a joint operation to take Gordon down despite him doing nothing besides surrender to prove his trustworthiness to the Combine) , went back to the Avalon, picked up his men, went to Black Mesa East and started the attack, in the exact time it took Gordon to get a hovercraft, go through the canals, reach BME, have a five minute conversation and play fetch with DOG. Either they somehow managed to moor the Avalon so close to City 17 he was a brisk walk away from it AND somehow not getting immediately attacked AND found a place to moor at despite the coastlines having receded significantly, or I'm just overanalyzing the plot of a crappy game whose plot runs on the opposite of logic.

Also, why exactly does the Gman want to do all this bullshit? Gman is enigmatic, sure, but I have never gotten the impression he was working *with* the Combine. He seems to have setup some chess pieces specifically for the combine to FALL.

So they just forgot lighting, or decided it would be a pitch black map, using the nv goggles, but didn't realise that happens. These game devs are absolute idiots.
And Hatred is actually self aware of its edge and just tries to have fun with it. After playing the game and reading the comic, I am 100% positive there's no way the writers for Hatred genuinely intended the game to be taken seriously.
However, Mitchell/Moint Pan is portrayed as a tragic villain (despite wanting to kill Gordon over self-defense, raising what amounts to a brainwashed army of child soldiers, and later joining the Combine to try and get revenge (resulting in him killing a bunch of rebels)), while The Antagonist (better known as "Not Important") is portrayed as pure evil, so the latter's edginess is slightly more justified.
20:40 the issue with the lighting here is caused by fullbright. It is an issue with the map itself. One reason off the top of my head is because there is no environmental light, or any light source of that matter.
I just realized why the texture is there instead of Gordon's face in the thumbnail even after watching this a million and six times and it's just so beautiful.
The terrible fan fiction inside of a broken, uninspired GMod map collection is one thing, but getting some notable TH-camrs to voice characters is on a whole ‘nother level.

I googled the dude responsible for this shitshow of a game, Berkan Denizyaran, and it turns out he now works at Activision Blizzard. Makes sense.
To be fair, making a complete garbage embarrassment of a game still demonstrates more initiative and experience with game design than a lot of other applicants would have.
If he had made something like this on a smaller scale and didn't sell it for 25 dollars, it really would be the sort of early project that most devs throw out and learn from for their future work. I don't forgive him for selling and defending this trash, but there's always room for people to improve.

His features in general - these "cool scars", this "anime haircut", even his eyes - are so, I don't know, try-hard, edgy or whatever. Like he's Sonic in human form. And then he starts talking with that "badass" voice, and everything that he says is always full of pathos, and then you get these special thanks to Hideo Kojima on top of that.
So I just can't help it, it's so pathetic! it's hard to believe that it wasn't intentional, but it really wasn't!

And on top of that, concept art from Episode 3 implies that the damn thing is run aground in the ice MILES away from the coastline! And according to Dr. Mossman the Combine don't even know it's there yet, so it shouldn't be from his 20 years as a pirate either, because it's a deserted derelict in the middle of nowhere with no one around it!
Man don't even bother, literally NOTHING makes sense story wise in this somehow still existing garbage of a game. The simple fact that they made cutscenes breaks everything that Half Life stands for.
The best thing about this story is that because HL presumes the multiverse theory is correct, they could've just passed the plot as something that happens in a parallel universe.

Aperture Science became a private science company after losing the contract and became very successful too with the help of GLaDOS, just some lore for Aperture not related but felt like it needed to be said.
You know, the idea of an embittered HECU soldier left scarred by Gordon Freeman and villified by the new world Combine order that fought his own way through Black Mesa and survived on his own to present day just to fight alongside the man he was ordered to kill sounds awesome. Creating a character that we can sympathize with and come to really enjoy, like Alyx Vance. I dunno HOW the creator managed to fuck up an idea for a character this bad.
Even Gearbox didn't manage to mess up "what if we humanized the bad guys from the first game" this badly.
The Half-Life marines seem a lot more reasonable when you see how badly they're getting their asses kicked in OpFor, and when as far as they've been told know the Resonance Cascade was intentional & the whole staff of Black Mesa were responsible.

The weird thing is, watching this gives me the impression that despite the numerous, glaring, horrific flaws, it seems like whoever made this game really was trying to make something they cared about. The references to Opposing Force, the fact that they even bothered adding a "secret" ending at all, it's fucking bizarre. I don't know all the details of this game's production, maybe it was just some young guy who really liked Half-Life and wanted to develop a passion project love-letter for it, but didn't have the patience or the technical skills to fine-tune it into a game that was actually enjoyable?

President Keemstar is the best part of it all. Whilst I have to give every other voice actor credit for actually trying, Keemstar seems to be the only one realizing the state of things, giving a performance the project deserves. It's like Battlefield Earth and watching Travolta chew scenery like there's no tomorrow... whilst everyone around him tries to be deadly serious.

Nah it's a purpose built piece of military equipment. The HECU were a very special branch with purpose made gear to deal with the XEN if things went shady. The armor was resistant against the hostile environment of Xen and was decide to track the users status, as well as provide extra carrying space for ammo.
In HDTF it's just a stupid stock urban combat uniform. Why wouldn't you make use of the iconography?

One thing that's bothered me about Shephard being in this game and being Mitchell's brother is that, they were separated during their childhood, suddenly they're both in the Marine Corps--HECU no less--and they never saw each other? He seems so surprised to see him.

when i played the arctic section and got struck down by "the hand of god" that scared the shit out of me, there was literally no way of knowing you'd get sent to the next dimension. atleast barney and the rebels tell you about the damn mortar thing, but this game just expects you to know just about everything.

The most inexplicable plot element for me is the City 17 part.
So, first of all, MOINT PAN decides not to take a few representatives, officers and such and asking for an audience with Breen (or heck, just trying to communicate with the Combine. They DO have radios on that ship after 17 years? They somehow managed to procure food, weapons and ammunition so it would be logical they have a radio, radar, sonar, literally EVERYTHING TO KEEP A SHIP TOGETHER FOR 17 YEARS, ESPECIALLY A TANKER SHIP YOU TURNED INTO FLOATING BARRACKS FOR A SMALL ARMY?) But discount that, he decides that somehow the best way to have a diplomatic encounter with the Combine sympathizers is to blow up a train station gate, then run around making an ass of himself until the Metrocops subdue him. Nothing short of brilliant.
As contrivance would have it, he is brought before Boris, who purposefully moves along the Gman's plan by accepting his help. I wonder what he told Breen to convince him, but from what we've seen it's likely in this AU Breen is also manipulated by the Gman? The Gman isn't as much pulling the strings as he is tying a rope around everyone and yanking them along.
So okay, by the time he allies with the Combine Gordon is "in" Black Mesa East. All he did there amounts to meet up with Eli and Alyx and play fetch with Dog. Let's give the writers more credit than they're due and assume "being" in Black Mesa East means they knew Gordon was coming to Black Mesa East from Judith Mossman watching the call between Kleiner and Eli and wanted to intercept him there. This means the meeting takes place between the point Gordon is branded as an Anticitizen and the point he's given the hovercraft to reach BME. Which means that, somehow, they finalized the deal (even though Mitchell's greatest qualification for wanting to hunt down Freeman is that he hates him, and apparently that's enough to entrust him to take part in a joint operation to take Gordon down despite him doing nothing besides surrender to prove his trustworthiness to the Combine) , went back to the Avalon, picked up his men, went to Black Mesa East and started the attack, in the exact time it took Gordon to get a hovercraft, go through the canals, reach BME, have a five minute conversation and play fetch with DOG.
Either they somehow managed to moor the Avalon so close to City 17 he was a brisk walk away from it AND somehow not getting immediately attacked AND found a place to moor at despite the coastlines having receded significantly, or I'm just overanalyzing the plot of a crappy game whose plot runs on the opposite of logic.

So they just forgot lighting, or decided it would be a pitch black map, using the nv goggles, but didn't realise that happens.

And Hatred is actually self aware of its edge and just tries to have fun with it. After playing the game and reading the comic, I am 100% positive there's no way the writers for Hatred genuinely intended the game to be taken seriously.
However, Mitchell/Moint Pan is portrayed as a tragic villain (despite wanting to kill Gordon over self-defense, raising what amounts to a brainwashed army of child soldiers, and later joining the Combine to try and get revenge (resulting in him killing a bunch of rebels)), while The Antagonist (better known as "Not Important") is portrayed as pure evil, so the latter's edginess is slightly more justified.

20:40 the issue with the lighting here is caused by fullbright. It is an issue with the map itself. One reason off the top of my head is because there is no environmental light, or any light source of that matter.
I just realized why the texture is there instead of Gordon's face in the thumbnail even after watching this a million and six times and it's just so beautiful.
The terrible fan fiction inside of a broken, uninspired GMod map collection is one thing, but getting some notable TH-camrs to voice characters is on a whole ‘nother level.
They also added insulting achievements that made my blood boil.
