2021 Omega Speedmaster Vs Old Moon Watch - Everything I Love & Loathe
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 ก.พ. 2025
- Today I’m reunited with a new for 2021 release of the most iconic chronograph of all time-the Omega Speedmaster Moon watch.
In this video we’ll compare the 2021 version to previous generations, discuss what's been updated, its illustrious history, and what I love and loathe about it. Join me for another independent and unsponsored review told from the perspective of a watch enthusiast, for watch enthusiasts.
So, why did I sell all my Speedies? What caused my obsession with them to end? Will this latest release win me back? Or has Omega further undervalued it with yet another version to cash in on its Nasa Apollo 11 fame? Love them or hate them, one cannot deny it's a fascinating story, so settle in and prepare to take off into the world of the Speedmaster!

Omega would be stupid not to adapt your intro into a commercial it's that cool
I am deeply flattered, thank you Marc,
Best regards,
TGV
I agree TGV’s intros are another thing altogether
I have to second this comment. Gave me goosebumps!
The Intro of this video is Outstanding!!! It's just may, but I'm shure, by the end of 2021, this will be in the Top 3 Intros of the year.
I agree 💯
As an owner of a 145.022 from 1983, I really appreciate the work put into the 2021 version. To me, the all brushed bracelet totally makes the watch!
Great timing to review the Omega Moon Watch in the same week as we said goodbye to Michael Collins.......the quiet often forgotten third member of the Hostoric event.
RIP. One of the greatest explorers of all time. Brave men.
Oh no, every once in a while TGV covers my grail watch and now I´m noticing the video an hour too late and way past my bedtime. To make the most out of it l´m going to save this treat for the weekend. Good night!
There have been so many videos comparing these but yet I waited for yours to watch any of them. Class Act my man!! Great great great intro (as always)! Love your work. Keep it up!!
Just picked the sapphire sandwich/manual wind version up last weekend. I went into the AD to buy a Rolex and walked out with this! After I put it on my wrist I was sold. It literally fit me like a glove and I love the bracelet.
I actually think it looks soo much better than the Daytona
At 13:42 we can see the Omega logo stamped on the crystal. Nice view.
It's worth noting that the precision hasn't been affected by the reduction in hash count for the outer chronograph track. The seconds hand can now be stopped on and in-between the hashes, allowing for timing up to 1/6th of a second. The 1861's hashes were never updated despite the change in beat rate from 321 to 861.
Excellent comment, thank you!
Best regards,
TGV
Luckily I'll never need that level of precision! Who does? I love the look of 1861 and more hashes just looks smarter and more "together / unified"..my opinion but I tried both and got the 1861. Love it
@@Valera_Scotland oh, come one, you never know when you'll be trapped on a frozen spacecraft having to calculate a re-entry burn on a cold-start landing engine mid transit...
@@Valera_Scotland nobody does, even if you needed too, no human has the ability to push a button accurately enough anyways. Find me the guy that can accurately time something with a watch up to 1/6th of a second, and we can talk, ha! I actually found the opposite, I bought the new 3861 version, as i prefer the cleaner looking dial, and of course the movement, leaps and bounds over the old 1861. I do have the FOIS as well, which houses the 1861, and love it, so you really can't go wrong.
Exactly what I was going to point out. You beat me to the punch. Bravo!
The graduation of the minute track is now actually more accurate than it was before. The new movements after the 321 have been changed to a frequency of 3 Hz and thus no longer being 1/5 of a second - the 5 indices graduation was no longer accurate. Now they corrected it.
Tried on a Speedy for the first time a few weeks ago. Took me all my strength to take it off at the AD.
TGV, Im from France and I discovered your channel few days ago, and Im obsessed with your videos, cannot stop watching them! The picture, the storys and the hudge work you put on it is amazing! I send you all kidness and strenght from France !!! (and you made me start my watch collection with the Sarb033, as a 22 years old student, couldnt dream a better watch to start in this price range, thank you !)
it's positive that the movement is an improved version of the original. It embraces the entire concept of the lunar mission which was fueled by advancement in technology rather than sticking to the old.
My experience with the speedmaster is vice versa - I never was interested in it, until I put it on my wrist in the BKK duty free in 2019 (20% discount) - it became my favorite watch until today, and for me it doesn’t need any changes...pure love on the “second glance”🙂
Wear an old speedy early 70s are prime. And easy maintenance apart from my 125
So I just did in 2023 at a HEL duty free on my flight to BKK 😁
Most my life with ROLEX the Hesalit 2021 got all my attention cause of the fully brushed bracelet and the story behind…
Such a detailed review, would expect nothing less. Magic intro. Love it TGV! 🦖
you are the last person i would expect to hear complaining about the 50m water resistance and lack of screw down crown but i sooooo agree with this.
The 2 best watch channels are The Urban Gentry and Teddy Baldassarre. You guys never disappoint! 🙏
I absolutely love the Speedmaster. I've come so close to pulling the trigger so many times on one myself and now this new generation is making me want to once again.
A beautiful vintage intro that captures the feel of the watch. I bought the discontinued version last year & am ‘over the moon’ with the purchase. Great video as always my friend!
Loved watching this with my 1861 Hesalite on wrist. Tried the 3861, nice watch but won’t replace my trusty 1861. Good video sir!
I bought my Speedy a little over a year ago and have worn it every day. It is the perfect watch, in my opinion, and a pleasure to wear.
Great intro. the music! your review corroborates my initial impressions of the new 2021 Speedmaster 3861. I couldn't resist this one and picked up the Sapphire on steel model yesterday. I'm proud to report that I couldn't be happier with this acquisition. I truly hope you rekindle your love for the Speedy TGV. Any viewer of the channel knows how much it has meant to you over the years, but I understand how you might not gravitate toward to the moonwatch forever, especially as you've stated you have smaller wrists. On my 7" wrist, this watch fits better than the old model ever could. What an update.
Cracking video TGV, and thank you for your commitment to the cause. Oh, also happy anniversary to the channel....May 4th wasn't it.....ciao
Superb show! Fantastic intro!!! If anyone knows Speedys on TH-cam it’s you my friend!!
I personally would’ve loved Omega to have kept the older movement!! Haven’t even tried one on the wrist yet?!?! What kind of space watch lover am I?!?!?
I do want one no doubt!!
Hi Russel, I am trying to comment your videos on your channel but my comments do not appear. I see my comments only if I am logged in my account. Could you please check it. Or do I have to check something? By other channels it works without problems. Thank you!
@TGV: Sorry to use this channel to speak with Russel.
Just love the really touching intro. A good reminder of what mankind can actually achieve in todays age of an extremely polarized society. Thanks for the great video!
Well said, thank you for the kind words!
Best regards,
TGV
Beautiful intro, once again!
I’m seriously considering buying my first speedy. I like the new version and next to the new movement the new dial and exhibition caseback on the sapphire version seem very exquisite.
Thank you for this in depth comparison.
Thank you TGV for the great and detailed comparison. Very well done! Stay healthy and well! Nick
Would love to see the Speedmaster take on two branches. Keep the hesalite model as close to the original for the purists and make the sapphire version the modern rendition. Give it all the bells and whistles, sapphire display case and crystal, 100m water resistance, ceramic bezel. If you're going to branch off might as well go all the way and make it a super watch.
Great review and happy to see that you got to have your hands on one of these again!
I have been waiting for this one so thank-you Tristano and I hope you are well my friend!
Exquisite intro TGV as always , & a shout out to the great & much missed genius George Daniels !
Outstanding video intro to your review of this historical watch! I just purchased the hesalite version of this new Speedmaster Moonwatch with the nylon strap. I am not much of a metal bracelet person. I love this watch and it is the most comfortable wearing watch in watch collection. As the first watch worn on the moon, it has great historical significance to me. Also, I had the opportunity of personally meeting two of the astronauts (Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin -second man to walk on the moon and the first to wear the Speedmaster on the moon, and Apollo 15 astronaut Col. James Irwin - the 8th man to walk on the moon) who both wore the Speedmaster on the moon, which makes this watch even more special to me.
Oh my gosh ! I bought a Speedmaster before it was picked for NASA , actually very rugged , it actually became flooded with water , me neglecting to have it serviced (gaskets) , I left it like that for about 1w days before having it serviced , still going strong. Neat review !!!! ☺
An absolute joy good Sir! Thank you for an absolute master-class.I bought mine in Japan 7 years ago.Now I appreciate it even more!
Superb quality intro, seldom do I watch through intros instead of skipping them, but this channel is the exception
The intro legit gave me chills. Couldn’t help but smile. Absolutely amazing work my guy. I may never be able to afford one, but the speedy is one of my all time favorite watches aesthetically. That aside, you really do have some of the best intros on the platform. Period.
Let me know what you thought of my knife recommendations when you get the chance. Have a fantastic evening!
I’m so ready for this episode, hope you are well TGV 😎!
Fantastic intro! Been waiting for this video ever since I got the 2021 hesitate speedy.
TGV - quality work. You've got some new effects tricks up your cuffs. Nice use of parallax. When you showed the side view of the pushers they looked like Alpinists for a brief second. Thanks for the vid, always learn something. I think I'm gonna be the guy that always says something about the Alpinist. Cheers
Beautiful. I love how they keep to the traditional recipe and continue to refine and optimise it. I need to save up coin to get this grail.
Such a big fan of your work.
Tgv! But this intro man, I have been watching your videos for years now, and you raised your game with this one😁❤
The best comparison of these astro-icons I've seen. All about the details, none about the click-bait. Nice! For me, the new watch is a complete improvement and reflects Omega's modern position and stature. Expertly refined, for once showing Rolex how to refine a legend! Probably should add one to the collection...
That intro gave me goosebumps. Great job as always TGV!
Great review! And the intro is a true capolavoro!
Your intro gave me goosebumps. Absolutely epic.
Imagine in the near future, once man sets up shop on the Moon. Omega sets up a factory on the moon and literally manufactures the Speedmaster Moonwatch on the Moon and than sends it back to Earth...a Real Moonwatch that's made and been on the moon and Imagine Omega also adds a small Moon Rock in the Box! A Man can dream.
Or maybe, moon-rock can be used in the making of the hands on the dial or hour marks. That'd be so valuable
Very thorough description and, as usual, a killer intro!
EP!!!! Thank you my friend, it always makes me smile to see a comment from you.
O&U.
Best regards,
TGV
Hands down the best Omega Speedmaster to date 👏💪🏻 I love my 3861 version having owned 3 Speedmaster’s in the past with 1861, 861 movements 👌
TGV, I assume you're a professional freelance video editor for a living? That intro was incredible.
I'm amused that all the tech TH-camrs love to talk about video editing and act like they're filmmakers, meanwhile a dude with a watch channel puts them all to shame 🤣
Edit: love Speedys. Wearing my First Omega in Space as I type this.
LOL, thank you my friend, you are too kind and your assumptions are correct.
Best regards,
TGV
1969: sending a man to the moon and returning him safely.
2021: sending a man to Asda and returning him safely.. 😜
I love the Speedy tho, great vid 👍
Thank you for this, you make me proud of my Speedmaster, which I have had since 2008. I had not realised that it was that beautiful.
I own the B42 too. It is a fantastic underrated watch! Built like a tank! Glad you made a nod to that one during this vid. Unfortunately my speedy 357050 was stolen a few days ago by bruglars😞
I just got the new Sapphire Sandwich for my birthday and it's my first ever OMEGA. What an amazing piece of kit!!
What a classy gift, VERY cool, enjoy!
Thank you,
Best regards,
TGV
Thank you so much for answering a question about bracelet fitting. Heard it first on the best watch channel.
Awesome as usual! Thank you for the great contents! Ciao from Rome!
In the jet....will watch as soon as I get to hotel tonight. This one has been hotly anticipated. Thanks much, TGV!
Just noticed it was sold for 250 dollars on the advert page that can be seen on your video. This makes me cry. I can't afford a speedy, but for what it means and represents i would so so much love to be able to wear it.
It makes me feel ashamed of myself. Can't be an astronaut, can't go to space, can't even own something tied to it. I am a failure.
You’ve got to keep your chin and and apply yourself. I own a Speedy and I am a modestly paid family man. It’s the only thing of excess I’ve ever bought. If it means as much to you as it did and does to me, you’ll have it one day.
Best of luck and remember, it’s just a thing. What makes you successful is how much others appreciate you.
@@TheWayofGrace89 Nice words mate. Thank you, sometimes it's... warming to see some humanity online.
I can never understand why 50 meters isn’t enough water resistance for almost everyone for almost every non-dive watch. When are you going to go to 50 meters wearing this watch given it’s not a dive watch?? I’ve never seen a 50 meter deep swimming pool. I just don’t understand, what am I missing here? Are the meters used in watches the same meters everyone uses? 50 meters is 164 feet!!
Anyway, great video and amazing intro! The intro got me a little emotional. 🥲
Yes, this hand-wringing over the Speedy's perfectly adequate WR is nit-picking of the highest order.
Great video and take between the two versions. Personally, I opted for the older version. I am perfectly okay with the "dated" 1863 movement. However, I agree with some of your takes on the new variant. Im just grateful to own a speedy, and therefore, I won't complain, or second guess my decision. Thanks again for your content. As always, its a joy to experience your channel. 🤙
The intro was amazing
Got my dream watch on the way- Lorier neptune. So excited 😍
We asked. TGV delivered. The only speedy review worth watching.
Great review Marc. Love the Speedy introduction vid.
Marc is not in this video, wrong channel! 🤣
But thank you for the compliment.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry Sorry, my bad. I meant yourself TGV, Tristan.🤣
I have several chronographs, including a Speedmaster. I'm considering getting another Speedmaster through a deal with one of my other watches. I have this to say: My Speedmaster is my most reliable chronograph. It's also the oldest, being from 1969; my other chronographs are from mid 90's to 2019, and have all been acting up from time to time.
My potentially 2nd Speedmaster is one with a cal. 321 (all Speedy-fans should have a cal. 321 if they can afford one!). My current Speedmaster is a "transitional", that is, the very first with the cal 861.
Great review, hopefully getting 2021 model this year as my first speedy. Keep up the great work.
I just bought my new sapphire sandwich and I got it at an incredible deal. It is by far a thing of beauty! I absolutely love it!!!! and that's an understatement. Every time I look at it, it's just amazing. I would reconsider buying as it is far above the previous speedys. I love it! If in to a room, people will notice and respect this iconic masterpiece. I am a novice for sure, but I am loving this. If there's any doubt weather you should invest in this piece, I would say, go for the gusto as it will only become more iconic as time passes. I love mine and I'm sure you will love yours.
Been playing close attention to the changes as I have, At long last, saved enough to finally purchase it. I think I’m going to go with the sapphire crystal sandwich mainly because I want to be able to see the movement through the case-back. TGV, Thanks for a great review(as always), an the interesting history lesson…!
I just bought my first timepiece - went with the seagull 1963.
Now I need a skx009...
Both old and new speedmasters are beautiful watches... Id get an old one if I had the chance. More historical.
Got the old one in January before they gone. I've wanted a speedmaster since was in early 20s now im 32 and have one after saving hard! I love it, my watch journey is complete.
I love the new one. Just tried it on a few days ago at my trusty AD. The new bracelet just fits my small wrist better. What I would like omega to do is, as you mentioned before, More water resistance, ceramic bezel, and 70 hours power reserve. But maybe it would be too not omega like. Too modern in a way. So I love it the way it is. The movement is a step up. I own the FOIS and love that too. Thank you for the Great video. All the best
Picked up the hesalite version in February and I love it.
Hi TGV, I enjoyed the video. Nice editing of the historical videos. I'm happy with my sapphire sandwich as I never tire of looking at that beautiful movement. Best regards, John
John!!! You are always a man of impeccable taste, what can I say?
Enjoy it and thank you, it always makes me happy to hear from you.
Best regards,
TGV
Wow! Fantastic quality comparison and historical review.
I got off Yelp a few years ago and I'm starting to have the same feeling about TH-cam and TH-camrs. They only way to get attention is to "love or loathe" something. Everything can't be 1 or 5 stars, but polarizing remarks generate clicks and game the algorithms. (BTW, I am very happy with my previous version Speedmaster in Hesalite)
At last , a proper review of the new speedy especially in comparison to the "now older" 1861 version , well done for picking up what others have left out.... No sharp wrist cutting edges on the case and bracelet then?
I think one day soon , I should go to a A.D and try one on ..soon , or maybe a snoopy... the choices....haha
The watch I was saving for before the Datejust 36mm jumped in front of the bullet :') I don't regret my choice but I will always have space for and love the Speedy!
I love my old Speedie, hesalite crystal & all!👍🏻😎🇦🇺 I also have the Dan Henry 1962! Great review TGV!
Niiiiiiice, you have great taste my friend, great taste indeed.
Enjoy them Andrew, the fact you have both speaks volumes about you.
Stay awesome my friend and thank you for the comment.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry Thanks for your sincere response mate! My first watch was a Unicorn given to me by late father in about 1972. Yes I’m old! My dad was a WW2 veteran with the AIF. I know you have an association with WW2. Great men all of them! Alas I digress. I have well over 200 watches. Everything from Trench/vintage, 1940’s Rolex to Vietnam era watch, Casio, Timex, Tissot, lots of micro brands in the mix! I don’t discriminate!🤣My point finally is, watches are a passion & an obsession! Have to love sharing horology with like minded people! Take care.👍🏻😎
The box at 11:38 is from the old speedmaster moonwatch correct?
I wish they supplied the token, loupe, tool and straps and just overall greater presentation with the new watch....
Another splendid episode on an icon! Strong work TGV. Cheers 🍻
Omega is my dream watch! One of these days I'll own one
Just bought this watch and love it 2021 hasalite version and it does wear so well on a smaller wrist.
‘Tis maybe the bogs dollocks but, but, its nothing different. Fortis rule the waves (poor spacewatch phrase) and the Navi looks uber cool. All this from a man happily wearing his new Victorinox Inox with green dial. Fab episode, ciao 👍🏻🏴
Brilliant introduction. I love the look and feel of the new speed master. I do agree they missed an opportunity to increase the h20 resistance. Cheers, Mate
Best Omega comparison video on TH-cam 👊🏻
Beautiful video. Incredibly well done 👏👏👏
Recently bought the Speedy Reduced with sapphire crystal (Ref 3539.50) ... and I'm loving it! Best of both worlds. Looks and feels like the classic Speedy but with practical and everyday upgrades. Not to mention, 39mm is more friendly to medium size wrists.
Really enjoyed the format sir. I do hope there are future comparison videos. Not quite sure it's a watch for me but you can't help but appreciate the Speedmaster and Omega. I recently bought my first Swiss watch, just a simple black dial Tissot classic automatic. Love the small size and look forward to wearing it when finally go back to the office. As always fantastic video my friend and keep well 👍
Thank you Chris, I always appreciate your feedback. I just felt it had to be done. Love the sound of your Tissot, such a great and important brand, do you know the reference? I would love to check it out.
Stay well Chris,
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry Yes it's the T0654301105100. As said it's just a simple inexpensive little no. Love the thinness and overall look. It's just sometimes nice to have a nice classic looking watch on your wrist especially when the occasion calls 👍
Interesting this is the first reviewer I've seen say that winding isn't as good as before. I will have to try it for myself at some point. Thanks for the great content and hope you are doing well!
Hi TGV,
I purchased the Speedmaster 38mm Co-axial, fantastic speedy for the smaller wristed gentleman, give it a try, you’ll love it!!
Kind regards
Tony
I've been reviewing the speedy for about a couple of months now, Man! I can't help being reminded of how great it was growing up in the '60s. Every time a speedy is worn it expresses masculinity all the time.
Wow wow wow, You have outdone yourself with that intro TGV
Thank you Sam, I deeply appreciate that.
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry Great work must be applauded
Perhaps the 50M WR was originally to save the watch from imploding in space. Love your reviews
Parker Jotter Ball Pen spotted 🙌 I personally prefer the Parker Metallix Fountain myself, but the Jotter is an excellent pen too. My father gifted me one on my birthday.
The new dial is fantastic. Grazie per il video confronto! Saluti dall’Italia.
Best intro and comparative review TGV👍🏼
Thank you so much Ahmed, you are so kind.

That intro! Spot on TGV!
Wow! Thank you for making this video!! I have to say that I've never undestood the particular cuts on the inner lugs (to make the bracelet end-links thinner?) I really like more the lug shape on the Speedmaster '57 model! Cheers! Stay safe!
Yaay it's finally here!! Thanks for listening to us fans!!
First, may I say you look dashing in that turtle neck and jacket sir!
Fantastic comparison video of such legendary watch. Definitely a must have in a collection. Even if one moves on to others afterwards. Ahem!
Cheers 🥂
Thank you so much Farshid,

Literally collected my first ever Speedy, the brand new 2021 sapphire sandwich 🥪 I must say, I wasn’t an Omega fan at all, prior to seeing it and the limited grey/white dial… but man! What an amazing piece, and for 10% off retail plus discount too. I can’t complain
Yeah, i got my sapphire sandwhich on the leather strap for $6100 out the door, and omega sold me the new bracelet for $600 (new one with some polish to the little center links). So $6700 for the sapphire version, and both straps included! Of course now that i've installed the metal bracelet, it's unlikely to ever come off...
I paid 7200 the other day. I’m still happy though
Your best intro yet-Bravo!
I LOVE the look of the new bracelet. I bought a speedy 18 months ago as my first "real" watch (with 2 rolexes and a Sinn added in the last year since the Speedy started my addiction) after having several seiko 5s, quartz seikosz, and citizens.
It's an iconic face and I'm glad they've made a couple of cool subtle tweaks. I'm definitely going to the AD to check them out sometime in the next few days.
The clasp looks like a real upgrade, and honestly that's my only gripe with the model I have. Easily remedied by putting it on a strap but I'm a bracelet guy so if I buy a new one it'll almost certainly be becaue of that and NOT the change to an automatic movement.
