  • Learn how to use completely free software, GIMP and MatterControl, to produce custom cookie cutters.
    This video begins by describing what makes a good cookie cutter and how to design them. Then it suggests a source of free art you can use to make cookie cutters and walks the viewer through the process of editing the cookie cutter image, transforming the flat image into a 3d shape, and removing excess material from the cutter.
    The open source image editing tool Gimp and the open source 3d printer slicer and utility MatterControl are both demonstrated in this video.
    Here is a link to the MatterHackers(TM) MatterControl program:

    Here is a link to the Gimp software site:

    Please leave comments about your experiences creating cookie cutters.
    Let's continue to learn together.

    Cool thanks. I have made some biscuit/cookie cutters, but with a lot more internal details. So here's, tip for those who would like to do more complex cookie designs. Make them a two piece cookie cutter. So you have your outer shape and then you have the inner part that you can then just stamp on your cookie. This works well for making intricate unique cookies. 😊

    Thank you Dr Vax, enjoy watching your video and learning something together, very clear and informative. I downloaded the image and used gimp to export the outline, however I found the wall of the image is rough, is that a function to 'smooth' the stroke? Secondly, I would like to 3d print some alphabet for my kids but I found that few letters require additional support such as b, d, o...etc with a separate structure inside the principle structure. Your teaching by using the base function in MatterHackers are good but what if I want to minimize the base support, do I need to create more 'cylinder' or a bigger shape to make the hole?

    This is a wonderful video! Could you have reshaped the fish any during editing? I am just wondering because I am wanting to make a hummingbird cookie cutter and the beak of the hummingbird clip art that I used is so thin. I want to increase the width of the beak and then when I decorate my cookie, I want to put icing down the center of the beak portion for the beak and have some cookie on either side of it. I am hoping this will prevent the beak from breaking off the cookie if it is not so thin. I am not sure how to do that in GIMP.

      Ender 3 pro if you are comfortable with a kit that will take 1-2 hours to assemble or a Monoprice Select Mini Pro if you want a printer that is fully assembled. The select mini is smaller so it limits the size a bit but is perfect for cookie cutters.

    Thanks for the vid! I'm looking to make custom cutters for polymer clay earrings and I'm going to give this a try! Question though -- is there a way to control the thinness of the outline/shape? I'm worried that it will be too thick to cut the clay, and need to ensure it's thin enough. I played around in MC and looked online but I can't seem to figure it out, so I thought I'd ask! Thanks again.

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have made cookie cutters on many of my 3d printers. Any printer with a large enough bed for the cutter will work. These are very easy prints. In terms of materials there is a lot of debate about the safety of 3d printed cookie cutters. On the one hand PLA is an organic plastic that is generally thought of as food safe. The issue is that our 3d printers are not clean and 3d printers have gaps that may trap bacteria. Personally I just use PLA, wash it carefully, and fully bake my cookies. BUT and this is important I am not a food science expert. It you want to learn more about PLA food safety I recommend Googling it.

    You could actually make a cookie cutter that allows for internal details, you just need to make sure that the extrusions for those internal lines don't extend as far down as the outline of the cutter. That allows the outline to cut the main shape, while the internal lines just leave impressions which can be baked in.

      I have no experience with the Elegoo Neptune but I do own a Qidi X-Smart which I pushed directly from Amazon. It is a bit more expensive but it has a 150x150x150 print area vs 120x120x120 on the Mini Select. It is also fully enclosed and uses a direct extruder. The best feature is that it comes with wifi access built which makes sending prints and monitoring the printer a delight.

      That is one of the nice things about this project. Since they do not need to be very high they generally take from about 30 to 90 minutes to print.

    Thank you. What is a good 3d printer for beginners? Especially for young children ages 5 - 10?

      How much are you looking to spend? Are you comfortable building a kit?

    • @MrsLPerez
      @MrsLPerez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We would be comfortable building, and trying to keep it maybe under 200. Or so give or take a few dollars. We'd like something sturdy to withstand use.

      First all 3D printers have moving parts and very hot components. Small children love watching 3D printers but they need to be supervised. I think the best value is the Ender 3 Pro for about $230. It is a kit but I have a video on the channel about how to assemble it.
      If a kit is a challenge for you then consider the monoprice select mini pro. Stay away from the monoprice mini delta.

      Thank you for the info, I will research and let you know after Christmas which we chose and our first project! Thank you kindly for your suggestion and videos.

      Might work. I would check the temperature of your hot water and also the top temperature of the dishwasher.

    I downloaded gimp, that exact version and it looks nothing like that? I am going through the same steps but nothing of what you are doing is happening. I am getting very frustrated. Your tools look different, I have no color and no menu or display at all on the right side. HELP!

      Unfortunately open source sw is constantly changing. If you are not getting colors and it looks completely different there may be in incompatibility with the video card in your computer.
      I recently made another video about a different way to produce cookie cutters that might work better for you. Take a look at this video:

      Unfortunately that video is quite old and mattercontrol keeps changing. I have a new video on the channel from a couple of weeks ago that uses a different easier approach.

    I suggest washing the 3D printed cookie cutters before even the first use.
    Small amounts of grease and oil exist on the printers that may need to be removed.

      Make sure to use a food safe filament also pla is not one after it's been heated and extruded.

    You never mention gimp settings, which makes following along impossible, you assume the viewer is proficient in gimp.

    • @MakeWithTech
      @MakeWithTech  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This was a very early video and I agree GIMP is difficult to use for folks new to this type of program. This video demonstrates a technique you may find much easier.
