All Hail Megatron is a pretty damn good starting point since it does a nice job of informing the reader of past events
Awesome comic. My fave until MTMTE and Lost Light. My heart broke in two when I had read the last issue of LL, knowing that I had lost something irreplacable. Roberts and Milne made my dream team.

It is actually funny how I got into Transformers and the comics, it was because I wanted to clean my living room. I have a thing that comics cannot be put away unless they are read, and my living room was full of comics that my husband and I didn't read yet. I read through all of my DC, Serenity, and Invader Zim comics at the time, and all that was left was my husbands transformers comics. My husband is the one who was a huge fan of Transformers since he was a kid, and he was/is buying all the single issues as they came out. I kept asking him to read his comics so I can put them away, and his same excuse was "I'll get to them." (Spoilers, he still didn't get to them and this was 2 years ago). So I was impatient and decided to read the single issues that were laying around in the living room. The first one was MTMTE issue 43. I was confused. I kept reading in random orders just to get them read, but I couldn't put them down, I was hooked. I breeze right through them. Right now I am trying to catch up before September hits and I am reading phase 1.
I hope you and your husband have enjoyed the stories, from the original two phases or the Rebooted Continuity.
@@MatthewCobalt Thank you! Since writing that original post I did read almost all of IDW1 (Revolution Era is hard), but I read everything from the main titles. And I read the reboot. Absolutely loved IDW (2005), the reboot was a chore to get through and I can't say I have a high opinion on it.

Personally, I reccomend starting with Last Stand of the Wreckers and going on from there, since the events of Last Stand are pretty important to MtMtE and RiD
There’s no Optimus Prime tho... is there any IDW books I could start with Optimus
The Wreckers stuff might be the highlights if you are sticking to story arcs.
That Shockwave Spotlight was great too. And the Kup Spotlight.
I don't know if IDW did a great job with Prime. They featured him sure, but nothing to me stands out as something I would recommend. And that includes when they gave Prime his own solo comic. Not really recommending it.
I'd argue that Last Stand is even more important to have read before MTMTE than Chaos Theory is. Hell drift is pretty important too. I read MTMTE first and had no idea what the hell was going on when they went to luna 2 and found the circle of light and everything Dai Atlas did with Cyclonus and Whirl would have stuck with me more if I had become attatched to Dai Atlas from reading Drift.

I love your positivity and how accessible you make all this. Your knowledge of all this is clearly vast, and I have no doubt that you have your favorite and not-so-favorite parts of the TF universe. But you do a great job of laying everything out there enthusiastically and let the TF newbie figure out which parts of it appeal to us the most. I think there's a lot of emphasis in social media of being knowledgeable, but you really make things friendly and fun as well, and that's something I think we could all do with more of. Thank you so much for these Basics videos!

I agree! He's my go to guy since I started getting into Transformers stuffs =D. I started with his "the Basics on [name]" series, then got damn hooked ROFL! Now I'm here with Transformer Siege Soundwave, Starscream, Thundercracker, Barricade, Lazerbeak and Ravage as we have started to read IDW Transformer Comics! Thanks Chris McFeely!
My first IDW comic was " hearts of steel" a story set on Earth in the late 1900. Wild west meets Transformers. But my absolute faves are MTMTE and Lost Light. I miss them so badly. Nothing can replace them😭
Why does every comics video now apologize for how long the story is. Honestly, if some folks don't wanna read, why are they interested in comics?
There are plenty of long incredible series that people want to get into. Which one do you invest your time into? I like the idea of Drift so I'm going to start with All Hail Megatron but for a person who doesn't really know the series making that decision can be quite difficult.
Because comics usually have so many different continuities/canon/timelines and branch off into so many sub series that it can be intimidating for new fans who are interested to get started. That’s also why comic videos tend to recommend several issues to get you started.

They might find the characters or story of a comic series interesting, but they aren't prepared or willing to invest hours and money collecting and reading decades-worth of comics.

Your video about Thundercracker made me so invested in reading about him, I ended up reading from infiltration onward just so I could get the full concept of Thundercracker.

I personally started on Last Stand of the Wreckers, and I'm currently on MTMTE, around issue 30, so I've pretty much passed the Dark Cybertron point. Gonna continue, but I'm probably gonna read Sins of the Wreckers or reread Last Stand of the Wreckers.

Funny enough... The first of the IDW TFers books I read was MTMTE issue 55... It was SO freaking good and different that I felt like I NEEDED to go back and find out how everyone got to that situation and boy was I in for a treat. Starting from issue 1, I read my way back to 55 and then continued with Lost Light 1 through current. And now I do TH-cam vids on some of my favorite story lines, characters and events from the series.
And Autobot Megatron is the GREATEST fucking thing IDW has done with this franchise. It literally was the key to pulling me back into reading these comics. Before that, I hadn't even touched a comic book in nearly 15 years. So MTMTE having Megatron as an Autobot definantly gave it strength. Along with the amazing writing, it's the best written TFers books I've personally read. And I've been a fan of the Cybertronians since 1984.
Autobot Megatron was great because it was focused not on whether he deserved forgiveness from other people, but rather on what he could do for himself. The scene where he visits his monument's flower garden on Necroworld is powerful.
This is PERFECT-- my husband ducked out of the 80s pop culture growing up, and now I have a way to get him up to speed! Thank you SO MUCH for this!
3 years later and I think we need an update on the original IDW universe. I haven't started reading any of the comics yet but I do want to start. All I know after this is that it ends with "Transformers: Unicron"

I feel like this continuity is mixed bag of top-tier ideas (Megatron redemption arc, Primus can make matrices of leadership, Shockwave’s emotional lobotomy, the DJD, etc.) and bottom-tier ideas (throwing mythology out the window, whatever the hell they did to Star Saber, etc.), with very little in between.
I actually really like that they discarded the mythological aspects of transformers. It never made sense to me why a race of giant robots would be created by an all-powerful god, especially when there are many other possible origins for the transformers that not only make more sense, but are also way more interesting/have more storytelling potential than the frankly boring mythological aspects.
I'm not altogether against the idea of the traditional Primus vs Unicron story, but I like when writers come up with different origins for the transformers.

The reason I often reccommend MTMTE to people is that it's an incredible way to get a taste of the flavor, and most importantly it's the most self-contained story that is currently on-going? There are some things you need to know and research but it's a lot less intimidating as a starting point since there's less characters considering it's limited to basically one ship (the lost light), so you don't have to learn about SO many characters. I feel like as an outsider to the franchise it's a really good way to see if you'll be interested in transformers as the life consuming franchise it ends up becoming once you're in it haha. It's well written, incredibly funny and entertaining and a great gateway into the other titles
I don’t know if you’ll respond, but did you buy the comics or do you know any way to read MTMTE and Lost Light digitally for free? I’ve been trying different websites and such, but they are not hitting, and him beginning to feel I’ll never be able to experience reading this comic, which would be a huge let down, because I’ve been wanting to read this comic series since 2018 when I jumped back into my Tranformers phase. 😢
I personally started with All Hail Megatron (The complete one with tie in spotlights and stories), then read Last Stand of the Wreckers, and this Christmas I read Drift Origins and Empires.

As a new fan & first time comic reader i feel sad for being late to the party, i binged everything from phase 1 to get the full picture for phase 2 and man it was veryy overwhelming. Then decided to only read mtmte & LL cus they seem more lighthearted but nope my feelings were absolutely destroyed after the final issue. I’ve found myself become attached to the crew. It truly was a thrilling experience & i wanted to berate myself for missing out the ride with other fans :(

Me too, but at the same time I'm happy it ended on a high note rather than going on forever and slowly losing the magic? I would LOVE a sequel series in the new canon, though.

ghostly dragon Fun as that would be, we’d probably end up losing the romances between Rewind and Chromedome, Cyclonus and Tailgate, etc. if they did make a TV series. I don’t think Hasbro’s ready to put a gay couple in their shows just yet.
Windblade was my first Transformers comic, and the art is what made me try it out. After that, I jumped to More Than Meets the Eye (practically always had a tab open to the wiki), and after a while I went back to read Robots in Disguise. I'm pretty much addicted to these series, but I think the only Phase 1 stuff I read was the Last Stand of the Wreckers. I've been spoiled with all the lgbtq stuff in Phase 2 (as a queer woman who loves robots and science fiction, these comics have been a blessing).
As for right now, my favorite series is Till All Are One (still pretty upset over the cancellation), and after that, it's Lost Light and that Revolutionaries mini series~

I got introduced to the IDW comics via Generations toy pack-ins. Specifically, smack-dab in the middle of the return of Megatron arc. Then, I got some Combiner Wars stuff, which was packed with comics in the middle of the Dark Cybertron event. Needless to say, I was utterly confused.
In Greece, there were some Transformers magazines that were tie ins to the Bayformers and, within those magazines, some comics from the IDW with the full scale assault of the Decepticons on Earth.
I started with "The Death of Optimus Prime" and continued on into "More Than Meets the Eye" and "Lost Light". Most of my favorite characters ended up in those series. I have been slowly acquiring the digital versions of the Phase One comics and some day, I hope to begin again and read through the whole bunch.

Megatron Origins. Start there. There’s a whole published guide by DW on where to start. And it all starts with Megatron Origins
That's their *chronological* starting point, but it could be argued endlessly whether or not it's the best place to actually start reading with no prior knowledge.

I started from the very beginning, with Infiltration. I really enjoyed Furman's run, Megatron Origin and All Hail Megatron. I dropped off later because I plain dislike Roberts' writing. Just a lot of creative decisions I disliked from the Death of Optimus Prime onwards. I really want to enjoy them but I don't. I'm happy that others do though.

3 years later and I think we need an update on the original IDW universe. I haven't started reading any of the comics yet but I do want to start. All I know after this is that the wreckers get one last title series "Requiem of the Wreckers", and the whole story ends with "Transformers: Unicron"
It's sad to say that IDW is coming to an end next year. My first EVER comic book was Spotlight Jazz and I've grown a love for the deeper themes MTMTE and The Wreckers bring. Admittedly I haven't tried any of the works to come out since IDW's reboot. But whenever someone asks why I love Transformers, I point to two things: Last Stand of the Wreckers, and the scene between Ravage and Autobot Megatron (or as I like to call him, "Old Man Meg's").

I actually read MTMTE first and when it ended I went back and read the Phase 1 comics and restarted Phase 2 with my new background.
I kept tabs on the IDW comics as a fan of genre movies and was curious about their source material(s), but only started reading with Chaos Theory and Last Stand of the Wreckers due to their critical acclaim when I started buying comics regularly. I've read some of the earlier Phase 1 comics and while decent, they read the way white bread tastes.
I think the most astonishing thing about IDW's comics is how much nuance and moral complexity they bring to the Autobots and Decepticons: I can no longer think of the former as just being heroic or the latter as merely evil.
Christopher Chiu-Tabet That's...a really apt way of describing it. The Phase One stuff is well-written and interesting, but it doesn't OOZE personality the way Phase 2 does.
Even when I'm not completely sure what's going on in the phase 2 comics, the sparkling dialogue and colourful art makes it entertaining.
I have to agree with the whole moral standpoint. That's what I love about stuff like MTMTE! Most people just think of the Decepticons as the "rawr, evil bad guys because evil", and the Autobots as the all powerful dogooders, but that really couldn't be more wrong! Both sides committed atrocities during the war, and both sides had good reasons for fighting.
Please do an episode on the Marvel comics series of Transformers.

I don't know if you'll see this, but I'd love to see an updated video on Lost Light. I think it's an interesting story that deserves some more attention here.
I've been reading the entire series from Phase 1, but i've been enjoying phase 2 more overall.
If you want a more straight forward and typical Transformers story, start with phase 1. If you want to see interesting new spins on the story, lore and characters, start with phase 2. Both phases are good quality overall (with some dips here and there), but i feel like even newcomers can enjoy this series.

I know transformers is a toy line, but when I read the idw comics, I forget about it. It makes me want the toys of important characters even more, like prowl and scorponok
I just started playing the, unfortunately canceled, Transformers Tcg, and it's so cool seeing that the art for the cards came from the IDW comics!
These are really great, I wish someone could do the basics of GI Joe, MASK Micronauts, TMNT like you are doing! Hasbro is really trying to make TF, MASK Micronauts, GI Joe and ROM a shared universe like IDW is doing with the comics. They have made an action figure set of those properties already, and at some point want to have animated series, and live action films.
James Roberts has torn my heart to shreds with his writing
I absolutely LOVE what he's done. With massive respect to Simon Furman and the others, James Roberts' writing is just so far beyond what you'd expect from a comic designed to sell toys. I've recently finished reading the entire IDW 2005-2018 saga in an attempt to create my 'perfect' reading order, and I love almost all of it, but JR's stuff is next level. Even Furman at his best just can't get that combination of humor, intelligence and pathos.
I started with All Hail Megatron, and it was genius. I think that's a good starting point, because that's when Bumblebee starts to show seeds of himself in Phase 2. All Hail Megatron is the groundwork for Phase 2, no doubt about it.
I have a little nitpick about IDW. The Autobot/Decepticon war lasted 4 million years. Ultra Magnus said that the war killed about 4.6 billion cybertronians, if that’s true then the war had an average death toll of 1.5 thousand cybertronians a year. We know that stimanzi counted for half of those deaths. So if the death toll for the rest of the war was 2.6 over that time that means about 500-600 cybertronians died each year. World War 2 had a death toll of 14 million a year. While the organic deaths (100 billion) add 25K to the toll it’s still an extremely low number of deaths. We are lead to believe that the war was catastrophic and intense but that’s only because it lasted for so long. If the war lasted as long as a regular war then it would be a footnote.
These comics are not only the best piece of Transformers fiction out there...
They're some of the best comics out there in terms of storytelling and characters.
There's also the Premiere Colelction for Phase 1. It's not all of them, just most of Furman's work, but unlike the Phase books it's printed in release order, not chronological order, so you get a bit of mystery there, and they're massive. At least and inch and a half taller than a Marvel omnibus, so the art looks amazing.
I have a hard time recommending the IDW comics to my friends nowadays, because the last two years or so wound up being so... bad. Not flawed, even, just BAD. Really, really, dedicated to ruining as much as they could before the curtains fell. It hurt a lot reading those last few arcs, because it felt like the writers were trying to burn the whole house down as they bowed out. Can a run still be considered great if the last portion of it, its grand finale, is so low-quality it almost seems hostile and insulting to the reader?
Been reading from day 1, excellent video again Chris. Really am loving the current run of comics. For newbies go read last stand of the wreckers, also spotlight shockwave is by far one of the key issues of IDW that sets everything in motion for what would eventual become dark cybertron crossover
mtmte was my first comic ever! and holds a special place in my heart, but after i went back to phase 1 and read phase 1 and 2 in tandem
Honestly could be wrong but I believe it was IDW's Transformers that got me into the comics. Mainly because of a transformer that looked like a mummy, but because of that I've fallen in love with comics!

I started with the Dark Cybertron Prelude Spotlight issues. Not the best jumping on point in hindsight, but I caught up on all of Phase 2 quickly after that.
Can you do a reboot for 2023 about the IDW comics
I'd say its also cool to start with characters you like. For example, I love Starscream and Windblade.
I keep coming back to this since I've started to read Gen 2 "The Lost Light" . After reading Gen 2 I'll go back to Gen 1 to see the backgrounds and backstories
I picked up the IDW Collections on a HumbleBundle IDW bundle, and well worth a read, just remember IDW is a seperate universe.
I’m thinking of starting with the wreckers trilogy, then more than meets the eye and then lost light.
I started with Drifts mini series, his character was my introduction to the IDW universe. Then next was All Hail Megatron from Phase 1. However, I would definitely recommend starting with Last Stand of the Wreckers. One of the best stories and great intro to the continuity. NOTE: If you like the more political side, read RID. If you like a good adventure with defining character moments, MTMTE is for you!
Hmm i'm more interested with The IDW hasbro universe as a whole with TF being the crowning jewel
I started my read in chronological order so my start was a bit all over the place. Maximum Dinobots is what really sealed my love of the IDW comics and the Dinobots in specific. I'm currently reading through MTMTE and read the one little miniseries with Gauge from the 2019 continuity. IDW's take on the franchise has become my favorite go at it and is what revitalized my general interest in Transformers at all. Which had been kind of dead since finding Energon to be a disappointing followup to Armada. I probably wouldn't have watched Prime at all had it not been for the IDW books making me realize that, no, I do still love the giant transforming robot people.
This actually helped so much. Ive been tryna read these online and trying to keep everything straight is a challenge.

I started with MTMTE, I didn't want to read the decade of stuff I missed, so I just went for half of that.

I started reading from Spotlight: Megatron, Heart of Darkness complete, Chaos Theory, Chaos complete, Last Stand of the Wreckers complete, MTMTE and RiD vice versa.. I am waiting for the Phase Two vol. 6 which will be covering complete Dark Cybertron from MTMTE and RiD as well as finale and Windblade series vol. (or issue) 1-4..
On a side note the entirety of Marvel US, UK, Dreamwave and IDW's *first* G1 continuity are available in a very attractive hardback collection (with a gorgeous mural across the spines) from Hatchette Publishing. It's expensive, so not for casual fans, but has been collated into proper chronological order. 👍

The first IDW Tranformers comic I read was Infiltration (I read it without knowing it was going to turn into a huge multi-series epic). Many years later, I picked up MTMTE and was thrilled to discover that it was 'descended' from the comic I read so long ago.
I have really gotten into this series and have been buying the omnibus books. They say it's not chronologically collected, but put together in a way that best tells the story. Great reads!
I loved "All Hail Megatron".I have to find the series and early runs.
I've been with IDW since the beginning and read everything Transformers related they've put out though, admittedly, I've let that slide a little since Transformers seem to be shoe horned into every Hasbro Universe title. Before that it was Dreamwave and before that, Marvel. Despite consuming the comics digitally now I still have fond memories of running round to the newsagents on a Saturday morning to grab my reserved issue of MTFUK as a boy.

I started actually with Phase 1, but then stopped and read Megatron's Origin story first based on some recommendations online. Since then, I've read everything, and never regretted it for a moment. I've grown up with the Marvel comics, and since then read all the iterations out there, but i truly have to say that IDW's take on the Transformers is the best I've ever read! Highly recommended series to anyone who loves Transformers. Currently rereading Phase 2 for the third time, it's just that good.

We need an update on IDW's tenure on their take on the Transformers, including their 2019 return.
I was bummed when DREAMWAVE closed, I preferred their take on the TRANSFORMERS comics and art more than IDW's it had a more G1 modernized feel that was classic yet new. IDW's is more weird and there was the time when Furman tried to erase the Primus and Matrix importance on the stories, so I was glad he was not tied to TFs anymore. Dom Figueroa's designs and the whole WAR WITHIN comic were superb and even the Ultra Magnus and Optimus being actual brothers...but sad to say all good things don't last. I still respect anyone that likes IDW's comics, but they're not to my taste.
I got the app and I'm buying as many as I cam
I really wanted to read these comics, then i saw how they massacred a lot of characters that i really like, changing their personalities at a point that they are not that character and i my enthusiasm disappeared.
remember like marvel transformers is built around the idea of the multiverse. while many of the characters share the same names more often then not they do not share the same life events so they end up with different personalities. the only exceptions to this as always are optimus prime and megatron as they must always be more or less the same in every series for marketing reasons

I started with Last Stand of the Wreckers and More Than Meets The Eye with the death of optimus prime. Loved the comics ever since.
