MEN OF WAR (PC): "Judgement Day on the Don River" - December 11th 1942

- The German 6th Army has surrendered at Stalingrad, & the Italians in charge of protecting the German's flanks in Russia are about to bear the brunt of the red army counter-offensive. Mussolini's Ravenna and Cosseria infantry divisions are holding a defensive position on the banks for the Don River in Russia.. Without German support, the ill equipped Italians fight bravely but are easily smashed by the hammer & sickle of Stalin's hoardes.. Light Italian armor is no match for the hard charging T-34's who punch through them like paper.. This marks the beginning of the end for the fascist campaigh in Russia, from here there is only, defeat, retreat, & captivity for the Italian.. From the warm beaches of Tuscany to the stark infinite frigid tundra of the Russian plains, death for the Italian Soldier was bitter indeed..
Historical Background:
1941 (22 June) -- Axis powers attack the Soviet Union.
1941 (14 July) -- beginning of the Italian campaign in the Soviet Union. Mussolini joined Hitler's Operation Barbarossa by ordering the preparation of a military contingent to fight at the Russian front. The Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia was comprised three divisions (Torino, Pasubio and Celere, the latter being the only one motorized). It consisted of about 62,000 men with no tank and was placed under the command of the 11th German Army.
1941 (August) -- the Italians fought against withdrawing Russian troops between the Bug and Dniestr rivers.
1941 (20 October-2 November) -- the Italian Expeditionary Corps was latter attached to General Von Kleinst's Armored Corps. They helped assault the city of Stalino and the occupation of the neighboring towns of Gorlowka and Rikovo.
1941 (Christmas day) -- the Soviets launched a strong attack against the Celere Division in the first battle of Christmas,. which was repelled with heavy losses.
1942 (28 June) -- German Army group A opens the offensive on Stalingrad.
1942 (July) -- Mussolini sends in more Italian infantry divisions. They became part of the 8th Italian Army in Russia.
1942 (November) -- the 8th Italian army had 235,000 men in 12 divisions, including three Legions of Camicie nere (Black Shirt fascist volunteers). They had few tanks and little winter equipment. General Gariboldi was the man in charge of this army.
1942 (by July) -- the Italian Army reached the right bank of the Don River.
1942 (August) -- the Bersaglieri troops of the Celere division removed the Soviet bridgehead at Serafimovic. They also repelled a Soviet attack with the support of German tanks (the first defensive battle of the Don).
August 23 -- German General Pauluss advance units reached the Volga River just north of Stalingrad.
1942 (by late autumn) -- the Italian army took the left flank of the German 6th Army, which was then attacking Stalingrad.
1942 (19 November) -- the Russians begin their counteroffensives at Stalingrad.
1942 (11 December) -- the Soviet Army attacked the weakest of the Italian positions on the Don River, which was held by the Ravenna and Cosseria infantry divisions. The Italians were driven back.
1942 (17 December) -- the Romanians were attacked and defeated.
The 298th German, Pasubio, Torino, Celere and Sforzesca divisions were surrounded and destroyed by the Soviet 1st Guards Army.
1943 (14 January) -- the Soviet 6th Army attacked and destroyed most of the Julia and Cuneense divisions. Overall, about 130,000 Italians were surrounded by the Soviets.
1943 (26 January) -- the Tridentina division escaped the encirclement after heavy fighting at the Battle of Nikolaiewka.
Since the beginning of the campaign, the Italians lost 30,000 men, while another 54,000 died in captivity.
1943 (by the end of February) -- the Italians were completely routed. He withdrew the 85th army, which was now reduced to less than 150,000 men. (And of this number, 34,000 were wounded.)
This brings back so many memories :) You were my inspiration to get into PC gaming and the Men of War Series. Thank you for all the great content over the years.
That's it. The video that made me buy Men Of War twelve years ago. I haven't spent a year without playing the game since. Thousands of players had to suffer and despair because of me. Thank you for everything!
First watched this video 9 years ago. Not gonna lie, this scenic battle got me hooked to the Men of War franchise.
If you had deployed the Italian forces properly and spread them out for a defensive stand, with armored and motorized machine-gunner units and anti-tank guns on the flanks for a swift counter-thrust and blocking manouever to counter against the Soviet flanking attack, in spite of their heavier T-34 tanks,one could fairly easily destroy the Soviet assault waves en masse.The Soviets are highly vulnerable along that narrow road all bunched up like that. So many things I noticed during this "battle" where unforgivable tactical mistakes were made and if corrected the Italian units would have won with far less casualties.

Yes and no, granted this is a game and/or a simulation, but by December of 1942 the Italian Eighth Army had virtually no tanks whatsoever including Carro Armato M13/40s shown here. They had the Savoia cavalry, and some anti-tank guns and artillery but few heavy weapons. The tragedy that befell those troops was magnified by their horrendous but brave ordeal they had to endure that winter at the behest of their Fascist leaders.They were criminally under-supplied and inadequately armed, fed, lacking proper transport, air support, proper winter clothing and many of their weapons failed to operate due to the extreme cold and they still fought well against superior numbers until they were overwhelmed.A book that came out recently called "Mussolini's Death March" goes into the details of that nightmare through eyewitnesses and survivors. Also its highly unlikely as it is demonstrated in the game infantry would just stand up and face each other out in the open and start blasting away at each other. Don't get me wrong, overall I like the video and thanks for uploading it.

The tanks are L6/40's, which is correct. They were the only armor support the Italians had in Russia, apart from a few Semovente 47's (themselves an L6/40 variant). They are no match for Russian tanks.

If so, care to give me a hint on where to find the Skin model or program? I've looked in the MoW folder and can't find it do you know where it is? Thanks mate.

hey LH thanks for the rating, the Italians would have been able to fight better if they were better equipped, but the russians were unstoppable by anyone at that point.. def a massive slaughter on the Don River though historically!

The Italians retreated in the wrong direction, they were supposed to run away from the Russians.

it was clear to see that italian tanks had no chance against russain T-34, which totally dimished italian lines... i would say it was one of the best inventions of WW2 or mayby the best!
the Germans in Stalingrad didn't surrender until months after the Italians had been hit with the counteroffensive on the flanks.

I didnt think the Italians had any armored cars in Russia. They did have some self propelled guns though. They might have done better with them in this!

what he should have done is send in infantry first to buy time for him to build defences at the river. then used the artillery to thin them out. then used the tanks for a rear flanking manover probably would not have worked/ the wog's never had any good tank your not going ot win a tank on tank slugging match
