- A woman on a suicide mission speeds recklessly on a busy highway. This segment was taken from Episode 106 which aired on October 10, 1989 on CBS. It originally aired on the second special episode, which aired on May 9, 1989. This particular version of the segment was taken from a 30-minute syndicated episode, so small parts of it may have been cut out to make room for commercials.
Vote for Rescue 911 to be released on DVD at www.tvshowsondv... and to be put back on television at www.petitiononl...
I remember this very well from when it was aired!
At the time I was driving a 4 door Dodge Aspen with a vinyl roof similar to the one being driven by the lady against the traffic. I never forgot the camera view of the hubcap on the front wheel as the car was weaving through traffic at high speed, or the sound of the screaming Slant 6.
[1/2]
I love that 1980 body style of aspen the others look so old
…or the sound of the Aspen’s horn!
I think they did this re-enactment at lower speeds and then sped up the film to make it look like she was going 90. I read an article about this segment, and I think it said they filmed the crash at 30 mph and sped up the film to make it look more violent.
Yeah, it's pretty obvious because even the other cars on the freeway appear to be driving at top speed. 3:55 especially gives it away when you look at the police cruiser's flashing lights.
There is such a camera technique called undercranking. They also used that when filming the car & train chase from the movie The French Connection.
pre CGI
yet another awesome Rescue 911 video. I had totally forgotten the show even existed, but it was so good! Wish someone would show re-runs on tv!!
Pluto TV has a Rescue 911 channel!
bless that officer, this is only a job he had to do but he put his life on the line anyway. very proud of what he did
That's great to hear! I watched this segment at the time when it aired in late '89 and I was living in Germantown Montgomery County (next to D. C.) at the time. I remember hearing about that crash in the news. Im glad he's doing better today
That officer sure had balls to put his car infront of the speeding chick, especially after your son dies in a car accident. That had to be horrific...
Very true
Perhaps because he didn't want to see others die the same way he lost his son.
And he says, "they wasn't."
I am definitely staying on my medication. Amazing no one is dead.
I feel bad for that woman who had depression. depression can hurt badly.
I am struggling with depressions for years, but I'd never take another ones in that danger
the guy who saved lives is so nice!
i can't belive he got so hurt!!!!
That was intense, may one of the most intense episodes I've seen.
I've seen worse ones, but this was one of the intense stories.
I have the pleasure of seeing him every day. I see him in a new light ,he's a damn hero !! 👏
Way to go rescue 911 your show is deeply helpful in many ways really appreciate you guys thanks take care. Joe
I remember when this happened. The mother and the baby were really lucky
That is one of my favorites. It should be posted!
very exciting but very sad love these episodes thanks
I AGREE COMPLETELY!!! Thank you for speaking the truth, PrinceNippy.
This was just tragic...for both the driver and the victims...
I googled this incident and found out the driver’s name, she passed away in October this year at the age of 73. I wonder how all the other survivors are doing today.
Where is the article?
@@nicholasthompson7690 just Google the march 23rd 1987 Maryland high speed chase.
@@nicholasthompson7690 The woman was identified as Leona B. Hann.
At 5:12 it changes from a re-enactment to actual footage from the incident. They may not have been able to get an orange truck for the re-enactment.
o god these are old but awesome show i remember watching these every week when i was a kid i miss them!
Two different cars were used in the reenactment: A 1980 Plymouth Volaire (reenactment) and a 1978 Dodge Aspen.
Man that was some serious driving!! She
was tearing up the road burning rubber!
the chase started 5 min from my house, i was 4 at the time, still live here, it was on 83, i can literally hear the highway from my house but yeah the chase started in shrewsbury pa and ended around timonium md
We don't, but Laura Cannon e-mailed me and asked for the segment long before I ever started uploading to youtube. She knew names and details that someone would only know if they had this on tape and watched it a lot, or if they were involved. She commented on the video right after I e-mailed her to let her know it was up, so I would say there's a good chance it's her. As for some of the other videos, it's anyone's guess.
Would of done the same thing to shield that family... even if I lose my junk car or my life as well. Also drove down that same stretch before. Maniacs that speed like that are more common then you'd think. Also "Acute depression" is no excuse for nearly killing people because of your sad pathetic life. Should of had her license confiscated. I have depression myself but I'd rather kill myself in private then selfishly kill or injure others in a way like that and scarring people for life mentally and physically.
Didn't expect to see you here
you are absolutely right. She should never drive because she knew she had depression. Stay in a hospital . contact your doctor , friends or family and tell them you want to kill yourself and dont get others involve. For me she is guilty. Many innocent people almost die. It hurts when someone die and no excuse could bring back the dead alive. This is a lesson for people who have depresson, one does not have to reach so far if they dont take there medication and keep always in touch with there physical therapy.🛌
i saw this
ts a blessing u all survived this
Don't know what kind of sport-tuned suspension her Aspen must have had for those kind of high speed manouvers, but I would never imagine mine would have that capability, especially to cross a grass median at 100 MPH... I still drive that car today.
I was both impressed by the driving ability, and saddened by the tragic final outcome of this episode. Nice to see the posting from the Cannons. Too bad Ken's career was ended by his injuries.
*Leona B. Hann (July 24, 1947 - October 12, 2020)*
I have depression and I'm getting my masters degree in counseling and I still can't believe it! Mental illnesses are not an excuse for something like this.
based
Exactly
Actually it can be an excuse. It's called the insanity defence.
You're in the wrong field. But then again, many counselors just suck. You should wait on tables instead.
Thank God for that cop Ken Pollock,a good risk-taker
I know he's a cop and it's his 'job' but dang that guy was brave.
That driver should have been arrested and charged! Depression or no depression! inexcusable, at least the DMV should have revoked her drivers license or at least, put her on a limited one!
That driver died a couple of years ago.
The driver was 41-year old Leona B. Hann. She was found not guilty due to her acute depression. The judge placed her on probation and ordered her to receive medical treatment. But yes, i agree with you. Instead of simply taking medications, along with support and adivce from family or friends, she let all her depression and self-esteem get the best of her and nearly take the lives of a couple and thier 2-month old baby and a brave, heroic police sergeant on that highway that day.
@@jonathansmith8672
Not to mention the countless drivers that she was playing chicken with on the interstate!
They didn't say, they just said, "[She] had some medical issues that caused some depression."
Yes.
this is one of the first videos on TH-cam
actually YT was up in 2005 and this wasn't posted until 2006.
Wow! You're right. The first TH-cam video had only been uploaded 13 months before.
Sadly, the driver of the speeding Dodge Aspen in this segment, Leona B. Hann, passed away at least a few years ago……
There probably be more people injured in this crash if it wasn't for this cop, what a hero. Taking a risk for for others, great job 👏 👍 high five for him
I'm sorry cutelovelylisa, but I have to agree with Chris. It's her prerogative to commit suicide, but doing it in a way that will injure or kill other people is pretty selfish. Depression does not equal insanity.
It’s extremely blurry in the crash footage but I think the engine in that Aspen is a Slant 6. If it did reach 100, than that was probably the 3 speed manual.
all i ask is HOW IN GOD'S NAME IS NO ONE DEAD?! IS IS AMAZING!
0:21 cool shot of hubcap, I wonder how it's done without putting the cameraman in jeopardy?
Despite what that woman who was in this chase did, "Repaying evil for evil" Doesn't help people or you to live; Don't repay evil for evil. Forgive and you'll be forgiven, Give and you'll be given to, Judge not that you won't be judged, Treat others as you'd have them do to you.
yes its disgusting.
allgood2000, do you have the episode of a woman that had a mechanical function on her vehicle and as a result was speeding down the interstate at 110 mph? If I remember correctly it aired around 1993-1994 or so.
This happened near Frederick, Maryland
0:21 Darn that incidental music fit very well in the "Pilot" version of this segment, oh well it's Rescue 911 anyway and we'll use Rescue 9-1-1- music in this case.
If we only had more cops like that around today...
I have ZERO sympathy for the driver. If she wanted to kill herself jump off a building don’t use others.
This should be on the Real Stories of the Highway Patrol Reactants!
That was a nice Monte Carlo that they distroyed!
Putting hundreds in danger because you're depressed! 😡😡😡
You're exactly right. There are less selfish ways to commit suicide.
He is a HERO
if this happened today, that driver would be arrested
And damn well she should be arrested (after she is medicated.)
thanks :-)
1987. It was legal back then to hold your baby in your arms.
Where!? It was definitely illegal in California! Nobody did that there. Besides, even if it wasn't illegal you'd have to be severely mentally deficient to do something so idiotic.
I don’t think it was legal, per se, but the idea of all children being in car seats was still a fairly new concept around the US.
mrbriefcaseVHSBeta has uploaded that one. It's called "911 Runaway Car".
the segment you just said a car with a mechanical issue is from #601 Stuck accelerator with the black woman behind the wheel.
I work as a PI and one of the things I do is investigation transport accidents. During that time the thing that has really struck me is the stupid risks people take, especially with infants who cant take responsibility themselves and need protection. Most accidents are avoidable and most injuries are even more so. I am sure the law has changed since then but man, some people do some dumb shit.
I am glad the cops were there to stop her!!!
You know, I have had some problems, and have known many people who were depressed, and they had a sense of what was right and what was wrong. Even if you are depressed, don't add sadness to someone else's life. Everybody goes through depression, and most people don't kill themselves, but when they do, that is incredibly selfish. Adding onto the selfishness is taking people with you- they wouldn't feel sorry for you, just mad.
5:03
OMG 😲 😱!!!
That was awful.
But that cop was very brave for he did for the family in the van he did an ultimate sacrifice by shielding them from being hit by the white car.
one word to describe that womans sister.....CRAZY!!!!!
The cop trying to stop traffic should have used a technique called a "traffic break"-weaving very rapidly and repeatedly across all lanes and gradually slowing down.
Cody I'm the biggest fan of his show
see now thts a hero man
She had and.ill.niss horrible hope she's ok now
thanks to that cop. real hero.
Obvioulsy this was awful, but the moment I saw that woman holding her baby rather than having it in a proper seat I just get so ANGRY. Why do people put their little one's at risk? Do they not have brains? Do they just think nothing will happen to them because they are so freakin SPECIAL? PUT YOUR KIDS IN SEATS and they dont belong in the front seat EITHER!!!!
Today marks 33 years since this happened. I’m just giving information.
If she felt things were out of control why didn't she go get help?
I meant that I have it on tape, I don't have it online.
She did not know what she was doing off her mind
that white speeding car is a 1978 Plymouth volaire
Did the family that Ken saved ever get a chance to meet him?
In real life, yes. The actors playing the family are the actual family Ken saved in the real story
That lady was probably heading to the Orioles game
I remember this 1
a real hero
Did anyone notice the name of the cop was Robert Reed?
Larry enticer would be proud just cause she sent it
My father was the one in the front of the rolling blockade. I remember telling him if that woman had hurt him, I'da kicked his but for doing something so ridiculous. (you know, because being a police officer is soooo safe) I believe he and the other officers were friends. He wasn't real happy that the woman got off so easily, sick or not.
That's because she's thinking of herself and not others.
hope they bring it back and put it on ABC scence their are basically no good shows on it
police officer is a hero
5:09 is in syndicated intro.
I was 13 with this aired.i remember on the news in my area.🥶😷✌✌💙❤💯👍😶🥶she died.😪😔😪😪😪😪😔🥶
Those old caprice's were fast
i have never watched a rescue 911 vid when someone dies
this was also a Special #2 season wiki has 2 eps. for the same one down. idk why
I worked as a child welfare agent and it would amaze me at the stories people would tell or the things I witnessed. One mother gave her infant melted ice cream as formula! Whether or not this was a minor technicality in the reenactment is another thing. This event occurred over 20 years ago and laws have changed. But it does amaze me how some people are brought up-they honestly don't know what their doing is harmful. Your comment made me think.
@theultimatekoopa2 Not that I know of, unless someone else re-uploaded it.
2:47 resembles #601.
9 days later I was born
Thanks anyway! :-)
Holy crap if I was in the way of that car I would be scared as hell and once the car had passed me I would be sooo thankful that she did not hit my car
wtf is that baby doing unrestrained in the mothers arms while driving? and why wasnt that person held at all responsible, even if just fined?
only 80 percent of people used child seats in 1987
That was in the days before kids in car seats was a law
It was a different time.
It used to be legal
Why would this segment fall under an Ambulance category rather than a policecar, because this involves the police in the beginning?
They did use the police car in the original airing on the second pilot episode, but I guess they replaced it with the ambulance here since this episode already had two police car segments.
got a link?
I selected the wrong option I agree with your comment.
Pause it at 6:30 and look at the woman's face. She looks crazy. Did anyone die, they say people were critically injured.
The Headless Horseman Shatner says at 6:50 that no one was killed.
that's the drivers sister.
y'all realize this is a re-enactment, right? not real life?
Geez that lady was definitely on a suicide mission alright. 😳
