    Definitely a masterpiece. Kate says that it’s a love story but I would argue that the movie challenges the notion of what we consider as love: is it lust? Dependency? Manipulation? Responsibility? Compassion? Who knows.. it’s as confounding as it is in the real world.

    • @Erina88888
      @Erina88888 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It was definitely challenging the concept of love! Especially now when the audience would see Hanna as someone manipulative who likes teenagers. But the way their relationship is presented, how they interact with each other even long after they broke up, shows they genuinely cared for each other.

    You can see how insecure and uncomfortable David Kross was in this almost one hour interview, he was at a table between adult people, and being that he was naked along with Kate Winslet's nudity that was next to him, which accentuates a little his insecurity.
    And the point of having this innocent essence at the same time as having this brilliant performance was what he admired most about David Kross.His courage in making a film like The Reader was admirable, as was Kate's in remaining as she came into the world for everyone to see.

    I have to admit, watching this interview in 2022, there are some creepy elements to the line of questioning, but conversation is undeniably more interesting than promotion-focused ones nowadays. Kate is sublime. Stephen, David, and David.. fearless. The kaleidoscopic look at post-Nazi Germany of the movie already won me over, but perspective of a man undergoing various phases of love candidly told separates this film from others

    An insightful discussion, but it's a shame they skipped over the age difference between the two characters at aprox 40 mins. The fact that Michael is just 15 whilst Hanna is 36 is troublesome.. Yes, the author needed a generational difference between them to be able to address the shame and mized feelings felt by the post-Nazi generation towards their parents and teachers, but the fact that Michael was, in many ways, still a child having a relationship with an adult is an important aspect of the novel which required further exploration

    • @hugomorales3019
      @hugomorales3019 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      i think thats a mid 21st century problem. 19th century is full of its own hardships and they r already too painful to know. lets just explore the original book and see any hint left by the author concerning our century top agenda or just simple unfortunate love story. the law, the moral, the feelings especially coming from the human has never been simple

    • @swarnendu89
      @swarnendu89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You can't deny the fact that Michael basically walked into Hanna's life of his own accord. So there is not really much to blame Hanna for. Whether Hanna should've discouraged Michael from making further advances is surely a thing up for debate. Ideally she should have, yes definitely. But we are not living in an ideal world, mind you. Many people take advantage of others. It's so very common in today's world. Though it might sound cynical but I think that an adult person taking advantage of another by way of manipulation is no less heinous than an adult taking advantage of an underage. And whether Hanna took advantage of Michael is surely a debatable thing since Michael came into Hanna's life of his own free will.

    After watching this for a couple of minutes-I’m flabbergasted that the US on a whole is unable to accept their proper responsibility in their role of the slave trade and go about rectifying it honestly. It’s incredible to see the trauma that SS institution delegated to Hanna, what Hanna delegated to the people in the concentration camps and what she delegated to Michael and what Michael delegated to his family. And this is a small percentage…and overall the US govt. seeks to bypass this type of responsibility.
    The US NEEDS to have a truth and reconciliation process. Use the example of Germany to start.

      Yes, and the Arab world needs to have a reconciliating process with the black world. They were the ones who started slavery, centuries before white people did. And the black people who sold other black people on slave markets to the Arabas, also need a reconciliation process.

      As much as he wanted to disclose the fact, in my opinion, he also wanted to respect that Hanna doesn't want to reveal that she's illiterate. She's ashamed of it, kept her secret at the cost of life for imprisonment even. Maybe he realized later that he should have disclosed it, but when he was younger it's just so much for a confused young man I suppose.. and that's why he felt guilty for years

    • @shankapa3182

      I think it's a moral dilemma for Michael. On the one hand his relationship with Hanna has shaped him in such a way that she's kind of like a ghost that colours everything and is always in the background but also he's trying to come to terms with the atrocity of the crimes she has committed. There is genuine love between them but Michael moves on in life and Hannah still very much loves him in the end. It's so deeply layered. Exceptional film.

      That's the beauty of this movie...he was smart enough to know that if he disclose that Hanna is illiterate it would have help her lesser her punishment...but he chose to respect her choice to hide that she is illiterate...he even try to visit her when she was in jail to ask her to confest her secret so it will help her case...but he back off realising that its better not too ask her because she was hiding from him too that she is illiterate...and I don't think he regret his decision in his later years...

    Very very embarrassing to watch. Being German myself (but who has majored in (among other things) the English language at university), I can absolutely understand how terrible and uncomfortable poor David must have felt. You can clearly see that he's struggling with his English skills at that point in life and the fact that he misunderstood a question and didn't know what to say at the end of this interview just reinforces it. The fact that Winslet even asked out loud / live on air for the world to hear if he understands the question makes the entire thing even so much more embarrassing to watch. They were litterally running rings around that poor young man. Maybe should have asked him BEFORE the show if he was confident enough to speak in English or if they should have gotten an interpreter.. Or maybe briefed him on the questions to be asked, so that he could prepare for them in advance...

    O my dear "kate", when I do not see you, life seems incomplete, when you are a celebrity, then you are spreading the fragrance of the rose garden like beautiful hair , it is revealed by the red and soft of your rose like your lips, then you are your soul. With the arrow of your eyes, you make your heart go to your heart, when you speak in an interview then one type of sweet sound in your mouth that could always attract and hypnotizing your milllians of fans so now I am also a geat fan of your interview because you always Frankly, humbly, without any fear and bravely answer of question

    Disgusting how people justify rape if it's a boy and a woman. This movie has potential to be something great, but it's absolutely horrific to see so many people saying that the boy "wanted it"

    Always struggle to understand why he doesn't stand up for her at the trial , her being unable to read and write would have led to her being given a lesser sentence . Going by her narrative , it seems she's not guilty of the crimes she was found guilty of . He seemed immature in his reaction

      I can't understand the fucking respect of Michael not to disclose Hanna's illiteracy.. costing her 20 years in prison. If you love someone, you can disclose it and express it anytime in public plus have to do your best to defend and protect and be by the side of the person you love. Michael was just a prick and asshole to do all this. Hanna still loved him till the very end esp the scene she wanted to hug him by the time she got a parole and Micheal even then avoided hugging her cuz he fucking moved on in his life. Such an asshole, jerk... but I loved how Hanna was loyal in love and stayed firm in love even after years passed on and the way Kate played the character is just awesome..

    • @hb-so6vb

      He understood her embarrassment and shame from not being able to read or write after her 40 something years of being alive. I mean she literally hid it from him despite their very intimate relationship, and he probably knew that if she wasn’t going to admit it then she wouldn’t like him doing it. I mean by saying she wrote the report instead of admitting she can’t write, she accepted the longer sentence. She knew the judges weren’t in her favor despite her attempts at justification, and she would rather take a harsher punishment than admit this secret because the shame has been building up her whole life.

    Absolutely brilliant film. It unfortunately did not paint a good picture on the people who brought Hanna to trial. It was a travesty bringing those "little people" to trial. Was it for justice or revenge, or just for the ladies publication on her life story?

    These guys wrote and directed etc, but I REALLY felt her suicide had NOTHING to do with him not loving her anymore. In the film Michael says to her “Do you ever think about your past?’ I can’t remember her EXACT words but she basically says someting about after the trial and he says “No, do you ever think about your actions BEFORE the trial?” I think in some manner in 20 years in jail she had managed to somehow blank out the horrendous crimes that she (no matter if they set ner up because she DID say ‘we had to bring order to chaos’ in the trial which was the Nazi rhetoric) - so when Michael said that to her she DID think about all she had done and/or had been a part of and remorse and guilt finally got to her, and that decided for her her fate. She was NEVER the woman who NEEDED anyone, yes, maybe she did love him, but I REALLY believe not enough to kill herself, again I think it was because she FINALLY realised what she had done.

    I love this movie, I’ve watched it many times, however the more I watch it the more I can’t help but think how would society receive it if it was an older man with an underage girl. I think we sympathise more with Hanna because she is a woman even though what she is doing is illegal in age terms and quite frankly grooming a young boy, and damaging him pyschologically for his entire life.
