Sidenote if you cant tell from the video. Simone was a few months pregnant here, 3 or 4 i believe. Not sure at what stage it starts impacting the voice, lung capacity etc. Theres a vid out there with Floor Jansen from Nightwish singing at a Finnish christmas rock show (Raskasta Joulua - Oi Jouluyö) where she was quite far along her pregnancy already (7 months) and didnt seem to affect her whatsover :o
Ofc SImone did an entire 3 hour show, FLoor did like 1 perfomance there, quite a difference. Doubt she would have been able to do 3 hours in the advance state she was pregancy wise.
Hence i was wondering how and when it affects :)

I think you must be commenting to the wrong post here. Becuz i dont see me critizing Simone at all? Like, anywhere? I didnt even mention her performance. All i said was that she was early pregnant here and i wondered how that affects the voice.
Also with saying if you cant tell from the video, i ment, because she was clearly starting to show a little already. They announced it a month after, but i remember lots of people already asking if she was pregnant at that show. Ive seen her live on many occasions over the years and to me its very obvious. And i only mentioned Floor because there are no later performances from Epica since they canceled a few shows that were still planned when Simone was further along. Hence Floor is my only reference to someone doing a performance that far along in pregnancy. So please keep the hate to urself, because you are the only one throwing negativity around here, thank you :)

Those growls are characteristic of Death Metal and at the end of the song it mixes Black metal growls (like an animal) and ends again with Death growls... so cool !!!

It's a great performance but she was just 19 at that time. Her technique and range have gotten better over the years.

There are three Symphonic Metal bands that make up the top echelon of that genera. You have reviewed two of them. It is time for you to comment on the third: Within Temptation. I would recommend the songs: "Iron" or "Sinead", preferably live from their "15 Year Anniversary" concert in Antwerp in 2012.
Or some parts of the Black Symphony concert, although she was sick then it still sounds great!
Uh? The top echelon for symphonic metal is Trans Siberian orchestra and Therion. The two bands that started the whole genre.

This is a very difficult song to sing it. Simone has a beautiful voice. I think she done a great job.

I've been listening to Epica since November 2012 and Chasing the Dragon and Avalanche are my two favorite songs of theirs. I've just discovered your channel, so if you haven't yet, you should check out Avalanche.
Those are called aerial silks I think :) also, the studio versions that you keep getting suggested are from when she was like 20 if i remember correctly , so she sounds way different!
'Simons' is a common Dutch name and is actually pronounced as 'See-mons'.

This is unrelated to this song in particular but I want to say it's great to see vocal coaches who react to both a lot of metal and a lot of Indian music because I love both but they're so different that usually most people who are fans of one of these genres don't know or don't care about the other lol ^_^

that's Epica's signature: strong contrast between her exceedingly soft voice and the male vocalist with the growls and rough voice, also the orchestral background and a lot of choruses. good song, though not their best, IMO

I have seen many reactions videos of you and you have done to BTS
I cringe whenever singers yell without a very good reason. How often do we see performances on X Factor, The Voice etc where singers are racing to hit their high notes early in a performance. It's one of the biggest turn-offs for me.
even though this is my favourite Epica song, I had never listened to it live until now. And I can tell you that she literally screwed the song :/
Many of the top growls in metal so as not to force it will be drinking something that will give them phlegm. Melissa Cross is the wrong person to go to learn how to growl and the growls will not go to her.
This song was hella' impressive, but damn, that dudes distorted vocals are pretty damn mediocre. At best.
Seen them live last year, I always had some problems with his vocals but they sounded awesome at the concert. I think he got much better throught the years, plus they are a kind of band that sounds just better seen live.

@@cwehden it's not that they are bad but there are many growlers out there doing a better job plus Mark himself got better with years. Mikael Akerfeldt from Opeth has some awesome low growls with good diction. Another good examples are Johan Hegg from Amon Amarth or Randy Blythe from Lamb of God. It could be of course a matter of taste.

Marc, the male vocalist is actually quite a weak vocalist. He breaks a lot of the basic rules to this kind of vocals. He has a tendency to sing with his throat which is wildly dangerous for his health and is detrimental to the sound.
