Every year my sister and spend a weekend in Rye. We always stay at the Mermaid, highly recommend. At the church you can go up to the rooftop, narrow walk way for a bit, nice view. Not for the faint hearted. There is a gorgeous delicatison there. Better on a day when all the shops are open. Thank you.👍💜😀
Thanks for this lovely video. It's a trip down to memorylane. My wife and myself visited Rye for the first time in 1989 during our honeymoon. We stayed at the Old Borough Arms and had dinner at the Runcible spoon. A few years later we stayed at the Mermaid inn. Frightening because there were ghosts. A couple of years later we choose for the Old Borough Arms again. From then on we didn't stay at Rye anymore but visited the cute place at least every year when we were heading to Goodwood.
I have a long history with Rye. My father used to have an art gallery called The Mint Gallery that was at the premises opposite Ye Olde Bell pub. At 05:32, the library shop used to be the Woolworths. It was used in the TV Series The Crown as the Department Store that Helena Bonham Carter purchased some swimming trunks in. At 18:03 on the right hand side is Gull Cottage where my grandmother used to live.
And there used to be a large cinema where the police station is…..and a real cattle market. The new photographic gallery used to be the ‘Int’….a grocery shop. The small cinema/ cafe near the church used to be the lending library. We lived 5 miles away when I was a child…50 years ago. Great memories of my teenage years before I progressed to all nighters on Hastings Pier 😀😀
I pretty much know Rye like the back of my hand but I've never seen the area behind the church surprisingly. You don't get many hilltop towns like this one and that's why it's one of my favourite places in Sussex. I lived in nearby Hastings for the majority of my life but I'm up in the Northwest now so I'm looking forward to coming back to this quaint little town next year to visit and spend some quality time.
Great. Every year before covid we spent a long weekend in East Sussex. It is easy to reach from the Netherlands in about 5 hours. And from Folkstone along the coast the first stop for us: Rye. Nice town.
Lovely walk. Rye is equally lovely in autumn/winter, very atmospheric inthe dark with the old fashioned Street lights and the sweet smell of woodsmoke from the pub open fires. I suggest a visit around halloween/bonfire night!

Really nice video of a lovely old English town. However, in the caption for Mermaid Street, around 13:00, the word 'raised' should of course be 'razed, referring to an historical incident of buildings being destroyed. The words sound the same but have totally opposite meanings. 'Raise' to lift up, 'raze' to cut down.

I love the way it's un-narrated. So many TH-cam posters have to interject their faces and voices. The charming beautiful scenery speaks for itself.
WOW MY KIND OF TOWN I COULD RETIRE AND LIVE HERE. AWESOME DO MORE OF THESE KIND OF TOWNS THANKS
What a charming and beautiful town! Thank you for sharing!
