When she recorded this song in 1986, she was 19. She was so talented and brave, despite having experienced a very difficult childhood. RIP Sinead

Sinead was horribly abused by her mother, then the Catholic church. She was passionate about speaking out against it, and was shunned for it.
Thank you for covering her, please do more.
    May she rest in peace.

Sinéad is amazing. This album sounds nothing like anything else from 1987, before or after. It's like she created her own genre for this album.

I remember buying the album I was 19 had a skin head and bought the album bc I was si intrigued by her physical presence...I absolutely fell in love with the album .but troy was the one song that lifted me to another realm haunting powerful and so relevant to the tweeny angst ..

I saw her live in 1990 at the San Diego State Amphitheater. She commanded such a beautiful , raw, intensity, that the entire audience was completely silent during her performance of this song. We were in awe of her , and rightly so. A true artist.

The first time I heard this when The Lion and the Cobra was released, I got goose bumps. Each time I listen to it my body viscerally reacts and I get goose bumps -- including now. Literal goosebumps. Her death devastated me. What we and music has lost.

This song is about her childhood with her abusive mother, when you know Sinead's life story it's even more powerful.

Correct. Not about a lover, but her abusive mother.

I think at least in parts it's not so much about her mother, but she is doing her mother. And the 'you' is Sinead. The 3rh party is her stepmother.

My parents bought this album when it came out in 1987. I was 7. Imagine the impression she made on me! She taught me what singing from the heart really meant. RIP, beautiful soul.

This is a pretty perfect song in this version, the way she uses her voice is just so amazing, there are very few people who are in such absolute control of it as she is and her tone is so perfect. The orchestra too makes this an unbelievable experience, it's 1:20 on the video before the orchestra starts that repeated rhythmic phrase and the song moves from the introduction. She is so effortlessly beautiful too, even with her head shaved, and her facial expressions can suddenly hit you - as does that little aside when she suddenly says, "Now."
You're right about the obsessiveness too, which to me revolves around the repeated phrase, "you should have left the light on" where she blames him for allowing her to have a sexual relationship with him. To me, it sounds as though she is still in the relationship but absolutely wracked with jealousy whether of a real person or not doesn't matter. I'd keep a close eye on the knife drawer.
Something to notice is that there is no melody to this song and it is just a single long rambling verse but you get drawn in to such an extent that you don't realise. I always think too that the fire sequence is important. The flames appear in her eyes and mouth as though hell was inside her. She is terrifying, even though she is such a small, slight figure.
"There is no other Troy for you to burn" she quotes. Her partner may or may not be pulling apart the relationship but like Samson, she would gladly pull down the temple to destroy both of them together.

This song is one of my favourite Sinead songs. It's so perfect and has seen me through a couple of break ups where my SO sprung on me that he'd found someone else while seeing me. I love the way this moves from insecurity to the righteous anger of being screwed over and lied to.

She is a riveting performer. Her voice transmits her vulnerability woven with her strength in a rare and captivating manner. Her songs come from the depth of her bones - her commitment to every phrase and note is completely unwavering. She deserves a future filled with inner peace and endless love, she’s been through enough misery for several lifetimes.

This is in my top 10 all time favourites. Good you didn't interrupt to much because it's a song that's building up. She did this live only accompanying herself on an acoustic guitar, basically playing 2 chords. Her voice just blows you away.

Nailed the reaction about being the innocent party of an abusive relationship.
No telling what her life might have been like if her mom hadn’t abused her and then died in a car crash when Sinead was a teen.
Such betrayal, sorrow, hate, defiance and venom in this performance.
