    Troy by Sinead is the best song ever recorded in my opinion. Work of art. Masterpiece.

    What's most heart breaking is that this song is about her Mom abandoning her as a child. In my opinion, the best song of her entire catalog.

    Back in the late 70 we said to a singer if you can’t hold the tone, try to intonate that tone and everyone in the audience think you want it that way. In times of singing divas in the charts, this type of intonation become a battleground for those singers and a sign of quality.
    Thank god, a few singers can still hold a tone, like Sinead O‘Connor 😎 but just a few

    Sinead says it’s about her mother. As punishment she was once made to live in the garden for a week as referenced in the song

    • @MayCleaver
      @MayCleaver ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s because it is very encounter specific about her mother and the abuse she inflicted. She has said this herself in interviews.

    • @hfortenberry
      @hfortenberry ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I've heard her say this as well. Her mother was a monster (very sadistic narcissist). She one time left Sinead locked in her room without the light bulb because Sinead was afraid of the dark ("you should have left the light on") for 2 days with no food or water and no access to the bathroom (she wet herself). But she still always longed for her mother's love and her mother only held her once when we was very sick (narcissistic manipulation unfortunately which left Sinead always craving more attention). The part about living in the garden shed was when their father first left the marriage and the kids said they missed him so their mother made them live out in the shed all summer.

    This is her best song for me, the ferocious intensity and range of her emotions is spine tingling !
    I heard this first when it was released and its been on my playlist ever since. I think you might find its a "grower" too when you inevitably return to it. There's an almost mythic quality to the romance this portrays that's echoed by the Trojan metaphor. And the song itself covertly invades your defences.
    There is no other Song, ... for you to yearn !

    I am a new subscriber and recently discovered your videos. You give the best reactions to music that I've seen in a long time. I saw the videos you reacted to Sinead O'Connor. If you haven't seen the video "JEALOUS", THE OFFICAL VIDEO. it's a must. The transitions and the depictions tell a powerful story of love and brokenness, something that she was very familiar with. And her vocals will draw you in. I hope you consider. I am happy to be a part of this new home.

    I think that this is my favourite song of hers as well.
    I think that it's ambiguous because she says it's about her mother's abusive relationship but I also think that it's about an intense love affair and her jealousy, it certainly speaks of a conflict of emotions.
    The first verse to me is looking back to the days when the relationship started and it's described as though it's in a golden haze to her, a precious memory. The second verse then skips ahead to the present day when she feels betrayed but is still certain that he, her lover, will leave the woman she thinks he wants more than her. Then she moves to feeling that it's all her fault and that she's pushed him away and her insecurity comes out as she questions him as to why he loves her rival more than she loves him. After that, she humbles herself and asks if he wants to go and then quickly moves to express her obsession with him. But even if she leaves she tells him that she will return to him again because her love is so strong.
    The next verse intrigues me, I'm obsessed with it. To me, this harks back to verse one and takes place at that time. He switches out the light and she takes her chance to express her obsession with him and that's when the sexual relationship between them began and when she feels that the two of them were bound together.
    The final verse is an expression of the hatred that she now feels because she thinks that she's been betrayed and that he's cast her aside.
    As I say, my interpretation shows the complexity of their relationship. The two have become one, but he's thrown it away and she hates him for it but she still wants him back.
    I may be wrong about this but that's the way I read this. Sorry to waffle on.

    Great reaction to a great song I haven't heard in a while. Thank you.
    Could you react to some Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds?
    • From her to eternity (a song about neighbourhood, from his first album with the Bad Seeds, title song)
    • I had a dream, Joe (some faster track)
    • Loverman (a nice song about a stalker and rapist)
    • Where the wild roses grow (featuring Kylie Minogue, yes, what a couple...; this song even hit the charts worldwide)
    • Hallelujah (not Nick's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, that's fine too, but Nick's own Hallelujah about a writer's block)
    • We came along this road (nice first line, nice piano playing)
    • Fifteen feet of pure white snow (a winter song, or not?)
    • Jubilee Street (adjacent to Penny Lane?)
    • Push the sky away (trance)
    • Time Jesum transeuntum et non riverentum (probably a track for Halloween; no worries, only the title is in Latin)
    • any song from the album “No more shall we part”

    I've always interpreted the last part like she killed him. "You should've left the light on" because you didn't it was dark so I could sneak in. Maybe because I saw first the music video and there is a house burning in the end... :)

    • @MayCleaver
      @MayCleaver ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly, this is a song about abuse inflicted upon her by her mother. She would lock her out of the house, and Sinead would spend night after night sleeping in the garden.

      I've always interpreted 'You Should have left the Light on' as her meaning left the Light on in their relationship. Now the Light has gone off in their relationship. Devastated by the loss of the world's best singer.
