      Hey there Mr. Mckeegan. Have you ever thought about taking on the cult leaders of flat earth? The likes of the eric dubay, mark sargent, or flat brain dave? Mainly to finally shutdown this idiotic idea of the earth being flat.

    • @AbsurdScandal
      @AbsurdScandal ปีที่แล้ว

      I still wonder whether or not flat earthers could just say the footage in the videos here is actually partially authentic & are truly filmed in the atmosphere, but CGI is used to make the edges round and show the Earth as a sphere, even though the unedited footage shows it's flat. How would you answer such a partially real but partially CGI explanation?

    • @AbsurdScandal
      @AbsurdScandal ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, flat earthers would just argue that even one week of free time between the date the photo was taken and the date of publishing is enough for super advanced CGI to be done well enough, because, say, the most advanced CGI tech isn't available to the public and only limited versions are used by Hollywood to ensure that NASA's stuff seems realistic, and that since hiding the shape of the Earth is so important & gigantic of a coverup that it's not hard to imagine funding NASA with billions of dollars to pay attention to detail in order to make the fakery as convincing as possible. I think one way of dealing with that objection is to point out the actual practical problems with doing such advanced CGI work, disputing the actual factors needed for such super advanced CGI that can do hyperdetailed effects in a few days, and that one week of time and even Trillions of dollars aren't enough to actually compensate for.

      What any flat earth/anti space flight people really cannot explain is why any of this *public domain* data has been created. If they were involved in predicting the weather, they would not say such a thing.

    • @ScalarYoutube

      @@DaveMcKeegan My problem with LEO is that he always immediately jumps to CGI to explain phenomena while not actually explaining how it can be faked with CGI. Some things are incredibly, incredibly difficult (if not impossible) to fake in still images, let alone videos (such as the RAW camera files you talked about a few videos ago). If he put the effort in to show and perhaps even demonstrate (he is a demonstrable realist after all) how you could recreate the "faked" media, then he would be a lot more believable and his videos wouldn't be "hidden by the algorithm" (codeword for: not get a lot of views because they are low effort and boring).
      But of course he isn't going to do that because he's ultimately either an elaborate troll / con artist that does it for the thrill / small profit, or he really is just so ignorant and incapable of understanding the world around him that he refuses to even try to comprehend a narrative different to the one in his head and will cherry pick as much as he can to support his crumbling facade.

As many have said, the sheer huge volume of data and images going back to the start of space exploration is staggering. Not only are there hundreds of thousands of images, going back way before the days of cgi (something I will never understand about FErs - they can't imagine outside their own timeline). They're are also thousands of written records going back right to the start. Of course some of it is incredible reading but there are countless documents over a 60 year period that would make the dullest reading. Even if you had a million guys work for you, this wouldn't change a thing, because the next guy would have to wait for that one frame you are working on, before he can do his task on just the same frame. It is tedious, you can make many obvious mistakes, and you need a shit ton of data space! A sequence of many many hours of uninterrupted video stream is impossible to do in just a few days!!!

    PS... with regard to 'Gravity'. I know that there are several things technically wrong (myself having been an Aerospace Engineer in the long distant past before becoming a film Production Designer), such as airlocks opening outwards, seeing debris moving at 15,000 mph (really?), the fact that the Shuttle was taken out of commission while we were too far down the line, and maybe a couple of other things...
    I tried to argue with the Director (Alfonso Cuaron... I had worked with him previously on 'Children of Men' to solve a few problems, hence my strange title on that as 'Vehicle Designer' or some such... lovely man!).

    This is exactly the method that I was thinking I would use if I ever met a flat earther - thankfully I haven't ever met one... my plan is to use a cheap SDR with a patch antenna to directly receive and decode weather images from weather satellites such as GOES and NOAA... because you personally have to aim the antenna, and you must use the orbital ephemeris to know where to point the antenna. Then once you've decoded the image, simply look up at the sky and see if the weather overhead matches the image you have (generally you should have no trouble finding your location in the image if there is at least some area not covered by clouds). And this works no matter where on the planet you are... so the fact that you used orbital information to locate the satellite and aim the antenna says volumes about what kind of object you are standing on.

    I’m not a globe believer. I’m a globe certain-er. Outside of mathematics, the fact that we live on a globe comes with such a breadth of evidence that it doesn’t require belief. It’s requires not to be crazy or in a psychological state of susceptibility

    • @rafaelmarangoni
      @rafaelmarangoni ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m sure you’re just being jokeful, but people tend to think that “believing” something is an issue, when it’s not. You can believe in something based on the evidence pointing in that direction. The issue is not actually a belief, but faith.
      Having faith is a type of belief. It means “believing without demanding evidence for it”. Although faith has its uses (e.g. notary public: when you just trust the authenticity of a certified document), that’s not adequate for scientific inquiry.
      So, as long as you believe the Earth is spherical based on the evidence that supports that claim, there’s nothing wrong with the term.

    • @Tsudico
      @Tsudico ปีที่แล้ว

      The sad part is, all this was hashed out centuries ago. The preponderance of evidence already determined the facts about the shape of the earth among other aspects of the universe we live in and flerfs try to ignore the mountain range of evidence that not only supports the shape of the earth but how it has its shape, how tides act the way they do, how eclipses work, and so many other things that are interconnected and point at one specific piece of evidence and claim it doesn't fit so therefore the mountain range of evidence is invalid.

      @@rafaelmarangoni Now I'm mildly curious why someone edited the Wikipedia article on fanaticism to claim flat earthers are "cranks", not fanatics, without bothering to make any definition for crank. Anyhow, I agree that there's a significant distinction between belief supported by evidence, belief as yet untested, and belief despite evidence. It's a bit depressing how flat earthers tend to build their claims not based on the topic at hand but irrational belief that someone else has to be wrong.

    The thing about CG is that the images by default are very clean. We have to put in extra "crappiness" just to make them feel at all real. Lens flares, dirt, light contamination, etc. And the images for multi-million dollar Hollywood films still look much cleaner than NASA's. No one would go to the lengths of constructing a detailed room and an animated character for a reflection that few people would ever see.

      Good question. I've found flatEarthers to be full of fear, rather than genuine confidence. They will dodge questions, lash out in anger, and scoot when cornered. They don't follow evidence to a conclusion, but instead they desperately seek evidence to support a pre-selected conclusion on which they've staked their emotional well-being. As for the _"why"_ ...who knows? It could be paranoia, a reversion to childhood, tribalism or extreme stupidity.

      Well, it’s possible with start of the art hardware and software, several weeks to create the models, and maybe an hour to render each frame.
      Of course, you’d need the weather data from one of the geostationary satellites, located 40,000 km above the equator, to feed in for the cloud modelling.
      So, for a flat earther, who doesn’t believe that satellites are real, that’s a big ask, even with such hardware and software: and the technical skill and experience to set it all up in the first place. Which they do not, and could never, have.

    I say this to them when they pop into the live ISS stream I often visit over my day; Show me a comparable CGI Video that looks just like this. CGI still looks unreal, yes? Usually, it's 'more real than real' with too much color, with unrealistic perspective, with the outlines or edges of bodies being not quite right when seen against any distant background, such as a distant sky. Compare the ISS images and videos to Avatar2 or Gravity; they do NOT at ALL look real compared to ISS' images.

There's a multitude of more or less fantastical ideas about, but the script, final movie and physics just don't say the same things. The script explanation would only have worked with a highly elastic tether, but the scene showed the character stopping and later floating away, not the tether snapping back.

    From some things I've noticed by dealing with flat earth believers, they don't care if they're wrong, they often know they are, they care that they can get a rise out of people, and in some cases get paid for it. This isn't all flat earthers, some genuinely don't know better, but I've dealt with more who knew flat out the earth was spherical and purposefully latched onto only things that would help support that ideal, in a couple cases, they did it specifically to catch out people who genuinely believed the earth was flat. Like baiting them, because it's easier to get people to admit certain things when they think they're talking to someone with a like minded perspective. As example, say you believe in psychic abilities, and watch the difference as compared to if you say you don't. Or certain politics. This is of course because humans have a sort of desire to fit in more than stand out in the majority. So it's easier to coax out who the flerfs are when you act like a contrarian. Nice pictures though, it's amazing that people would think cgi could reproduce those images so faithfully in such a short amount of time and without an enormous budget. Cgi can get so expensive, not to mention how much data would be used and needed for drives to accomplish even short segments as compared to what is available. Anyway, sometimes, when you encounter a flat earth believer, they may be someone who doesn't genuinely believe that, but sadly, there are a lot of people who do.
