BYD Goes All in on Design at Beijing Auto Show

- Among the many reasons BYD is now the overwhelming EV leader in China is its commitment to design. Bloomberg's Stephen Engle sat down with the carmaker's head designer, Wolfgang Egger, at the Beijing Auto Show. Egger used to hold the same role at European luxury automakers Audi, Alfa Romeo and Lamborghini. He says he wants to create beautiful and "timeless pieces" at BYD.

I'm definitely disgusted that our gov't will do anything in it's power to stop Chinese EV's from selling in the US. I don't want an overprice $70K iPad with cheap plastic (Tesla), I want a great quality interior, nice looking exterior, and 250 mile range Chinese EV for $25K. If you see a Chinese EV in person, you'll never look at another EV again.

The founder of BYD started his idea of making plug in vehicles back in 2003 and published the company's first EV the F3e in 2006.
Byd manufactures for other companies which made them a centralized point for new technology internationally. Ergo, why they rose so fast.
Quality matters more than quantity though and legacy brands will continue to be bought.
Cars like this is mainly for the Asian market.

BYD and a few other Chinese companies are beating the world in design. it's astounding that they've come from things like the awfully styled E6 to this is such a short amount of time. China is producing some of the world's best vehicles in performance in quality and in design. Imagine living in a country where you can't buy a single one of them!

As a Chinese enthusiast of electronics and automobiles, I vividly recall a time when Japanese and German automobiles were prevalent in China's car market, and Japanese electronics were highly sought after. It's fortunate to have observed the ascent of Chinese industries and to purchase these competitively priced products.

Once the Chinese automakers realise they can stop copying and start being confident in their designs and innovation, they will REALLY explode. The problem I find about Chinese speed is that it’s not backed by proven reliability yet. Cause this ain’t smartphones, if badly rushed designs have huge implications on branding and resale value

Like VW bought a 5% stake in Xpeng while Audi uses Huawei ADS 3.0 intelligent driving system for theirce tron model. Jaguar Landover are collaborating with Chinese ev maker Chery for their coming ev models. These are just examples.

There is a TH-cam channel from a South African guy who lives in China and he showed how many EV’s went up in flames there, mainly because there are a lot of people making cheap electric cars plus electric scooters etc and there is no proper control of this in China, BYD was shown in this viceo too, burning. I don’t trust the lithium batteries in these cars, i wouldn’t feel relaxed driving one.

0 to 100km/hr in 2 seconds is insanely dangerous acceleration speed for most roads & highways, especially in a city full of other cars and pedestrians. EVs will sell more cars to a hopelessly car-dependent culture but will do nothing to save our planet, in the end.
We need car-free walkable-bikeable cities that are safer and lower stress for everyone. Liveable cities, that are built for people, instead of cars, encourage greater community involvement along with an active-healthy lifestyle - versus noisy & polluted car-dependent cities. Cities aren't loud, cars are LOUD.

It's such a shame that they obviously still copy the designs of existing cars. All their models look completely different because they all steal from different manufacturers, there's no common design language between models of the same brand. They are clearly capable of producing solid cars, I really don't understand why they can't come up with original designs.

@@linjunhalida Non-Chinese manufacturers also hire designers from competitors and they manage to come up with new stuff (most of the time, Kia copying Porsche and modern Fords looking exactly like Aston Martins are obvious exceptions). Chinese companies have to work extra hard to shake off the stereotypes, so the fact that an established brand like BYD still copies like crazy is a real shame.

China is really bad in design and technology. Most of their design are coming out from Americans or European design
They way way ahead in ev tech. Why do you think EU and US are doing all they can to stop them from taking over their markets.

Tesla makes their stuff in China as well. They produce a TON of things, prolly stuff that you're not aware of either. E.g. about 70% of Walmart's products are made in China.
