- Welcome back to another edition of the Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Train, brought to you by Union Pacific and the Union Pacific Steam Program. In this video, watch as the deadhead move to Denver departs Cheyenne, Wyoming, bound for Denver, Colorado. The consist features the 'Living Legend' #844, and Union Pacific's newest Heritage Unit-the Salute to Service Unit #1943. Scenes include Tower A, Terry Ranch, Greeley, and southbound along Highway 85. I apologize for the terrible footage captured at Terry Ranch. It appears that my equipment suffered a heavy malfunction at this location and the video suffered. But I hope the rest fits to your Railfan pleasure! Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! What a beautiful beast, the steam whistle gives me goose bumps, I remember that sound as a child...!!
My god, I had never seen such a monstar on the rails, hauling such a long carriages with such an ease and elegance, yet with little smoke from the boilers. The bellowing horn gives goosebumps while viewing this video and one can imagine the mind status of those on board the train and those viewing this unbelievable speedway from sidewalks. Kudos to all those involved and especially to the camera crew speeding along the road without loosing any scene, till the end. Really an enjoyable video. I bow to those engineers and technicians of the UP railways who had achieved their goal in proving that the traditional ways don't die so easily
CS😊
UP restored an even bigger locomotive, called the Big Boy. If you haven't seen footage of the Big Boy, I highly suggest you look it up. Ed Dickens, the man in the engineer's seat in this video and the one in charge of the restoration of the 844 as well as the 4014 has described it as two 844s.
Old school is the best school. You can't beat this with a stick! A million thanks.
This fabulous video has jogged my memory back to when I was but a toddler. I recall my dear late mother pulling our coaster wagon, w/me aboard, a few blocks down the street from our upper flat to watch the locomotives switch trains in the rail yard. I remember how immense, black, & smoky they were to a little squirt like me. The engineers even accommodated me & blew their whistles when I'd pump my arm......couldn't have been any older than 5 back then, but it's like I can still hear those whistles & feel the ground vibrate up into the wagon when they started to roll out the yard!
These locomotives are mesmerizing to watch. It’s as almost as if it’s alive. It absolutely warms my heart that this marvelous machine is still in service

Indeed 🎉🎉
Thank you to all those who worked so hard to build this project.
Amazing machine.
Outstanding legacy
Ggggg
What a masterpiece of non-throwaway engineering. Man's closest achievement to building a machine which is almost a living being. This one is a truly majestic beast.
ALMOST LIVING..?
@@lamportnholt9509 its sorta a metaphor
How beautiful you put it. And of course, you're absolutely right; you won't find any (former) steamer personnel who wouldn't claim their loco had a very specific life of it's own - no matter which type they're talking about or which country they come from ! Perhaps there's something to it; maybe it's just the naked truth !

Thank you for posting. This is a great piece of U.S. History and is a joy to see. Every viewer should be right proud of this train and special appreciation of the folks who make it available for us to see.
Beautiful ... beautiful. I am just a few years too young to have any memory of when steamers like this were used commercially. That's why I love seeing this! Hats off to UP for having such a vibrant heritage program! Wonderful video!
I don't know how ANYONE could not like this video with all the action, speed and nostalgia rolled into one! Thanks for sharing this video and let's have more.
What an awesome piece of machinery! It is both brutish and beautiful all at the same time. I've read that these old steam locos were the most powerful train engines ever built, far exceeding the power of today's modern diesels. It was fun to watch this magnificent beast of a machine pushing full throttle down the rails with a full load in tow!
Watch the Big Boy 4014 that monster was rated at 6400 HP. One of the most beautiful & powerful steam engines that was ever made.
@@r8rdarklord ❤!
Lucky enough to be the conductor on this four day Cheyenne Frontiers Day trip
There is something hypnotic watching this running gear. She is just beautiful to watch!!
Thanks for sharing. I love watching this locomotive. I grew up listening their wistle. What a impressive sound.
Thank you for sharing your excellent camera work. It's the best I've seen of the 844 at high speed. Those of us fortunate enough to have seen this engine up close fully know how wonderful she is. As others have said, that engineer was living his boyhood dreams, and as I watched, I couldn't help imaging what it would be like to be doing that. Work but also great fun!
I recently saw a video where 844 helped push a stalled diesel train up a grade with an 11,000 ton payload... it is fantastic to see this old gal still workin hard and doing what it was built to do!
And UP keeps this legacy alive for another 50 years. Thanks to the Union Pacific, Management, paid, and volunteers that made this all possible. Gregg Ryan, Wilmington, DE.

Soon 4014 will be ready too.
UP management has found that the steam program gives the best and most PR for the buck.
The Tennessee Central Railway Museum is restoring the only remaining NC&StL Railway steam locomotive, a J3 4-8-4 "Dixie" built in 1943 by the American Locomotive Co. The "N&C" was loath to call their 4-8-4 a "Northern" as other RRs. It was on display in Centennial Park, Nashville, Tn. for over 50 years.
Such a beautiful machine, love its big wheels and mechanical movements. It's magnificent!
Our modern engines, Diesel/Electric are fantastic. But the beauty of steam engines is unrivaled in functionality and mechanical execution of a job.

Thanks for uploading this vid. It always blows my mind how effortlessly 844 flys down the tracks. Its like it's riding on air
That’s not a whistle. That’s the roar of a bellowing monster!
God, that must sound AWESOME in real time as it’s hauling by!
Congratulations to the team for the amazing work. This is a stunning locomotive.
Words can't describe it. It has to be experienced in person and if it can, on a cold day.
@@rickmiller1429 It seems it's a whistle so strong, you could feel it. Steam trains really are alive
The new smokeless engines must not be fueled by coal,
@@w96725 It is an oil burner, but even coal burners can have very little smoke. It all depends on how the fireman is firing the engine. If he is getting a good, strong, even draft through the firebox, and is putting an small, even layer of coal on the fire, then it won't smoke much at all. It's all about fuel:air ratio. Even the N&W 611 has its original decal laying out one rule that was synonymous with almost all coal burning steamers. "Black Smoke is Waste."
@@NEAFarmKid4010 Nowadays it's "Black Smoke Looks Cool On Video".
Awesome train. Beautiful video. Who could possibly give a thumbs down to this incredible piece of history. What a marvelous treat to see and hear this engine in action.
My grandfather spoke of the days of steam. Now, the craftsmanship of the shop workers meets the UP leadership to retake that time stamp of America. Wow. What a pride in more than a job. Just so well done.

When I was a kid, I used to stand on a bridge over the Toronto rail yard in the 1950's. That used to be one of the highlights of childhood. I stood there and watch them for hours. This takes this back to those memories. What a beautiful engine and video. Guess I'm still a 70yo kid at heart.
Some of my best later memories of my mother was her and I chasing this train. A few times we caught it going under a bridge, with us right above it. Good times! Nothing wrong with being a kid at heart.
@mikepech1648; That Toronto rail yard, was that up near Maple, by Hwy 7 & Jane st. Our family lived on Jane St about a mile Noth of Hwy 7, back in the late 50's into the 60's.
It's obvious how people say these machines have a soul. It looks alive on the track.

Excellent footage of this wonderful freight train route!
The UP 844 is a beautiful piece of machinery. Thanks for posting this great vid!
What a beauty. I was a small boy when most of these were out of service. But I do remember seeing them before they were all gone. I grew up close to a very large train yard and I still remember the sounds of the trains at all hours of the day, but especially at night. Trains are in my blood, thankfully.
Thanks so much. What a wonderfully nostalgic look at America's railroad past. Made my day. Your filming was perfect.
Always lived in hearing distance of many train lines and it’s a very distinct sound to hear a horn from the past! Great video!
Pure steam power, and a beautiful throaty whistle. What a machine. Love it!
Too much whistle - Boring!
I think you are sitting in the wrong classroom.
Looks like you're in the wrong fucking hobby lol
Yeah, if you hate whistle blowing, kiss my ass!
Michael Clark uhh what about that diesel locomotive a few cars behind it?
Nice video! My cousin drove the Union Pacific 4005 Big Boy from Cheyenne to the Fourney Museum in Denver on it's final run. He was the senior engineer for UP at the time. He said it was not all that complicated. It has 8 driven axles and the cab is enormous.
Man, I love that these beautiful machines are kept running and in such good condition.
I am envious of few men in this world but the engineer at 10,07 is living the dream, driving one of the best steam trains in the world with a lady sat behind him and pulling the whistle cord.He has got to heaven.Brilliant video and a good looking loco, well done from across the pond.
He might be living his dream, but he is also the boss over all of the Steam operations for Union Pacific. He's not the regular engineer/driver.
Thank you Nick for doing this for us. After watching the video, it appeared that Ed looked like that he was having some fun, this had given the crews a short break from working on the "Big Boy." Over a period of time they have been working a whole lot of 12-hour shifts 7 days a week. The next time around, it will be the test runs and the "break in sessions for the "Big Boy."
Its a work of art & a labour of love to the guys who maintain it. Great Video.
Apparently the dearly departed George H.W. Bush had a train dedicated to him in the presidential colours. What's happened to that?. Could you do a video of it next time?.
It's beautiful and I'm glad it was saved then restored it as well operated too. Thank you!
I've been lucky enough to see this engine up close, and the Big Boy as well. This engine is my favorite out of the two. Thanks to UP for keeping our history alive and working.
What a wonderful film and a real credit to Nick Valdez and the engine and crew.
Fabulous running shots and really brings it home about the majesty of this engine and how I am sure we all envy the folks on the footplate!
Thank you so much, love this.
Some really great moments in this video. One of the best ones I have ever seen.Thanks.
WOW ! ! ! Nothing shy of just pure AWESOME ! ! !
That's a superb steam locomotive! And very well filmed. Thank you for posting.

What a beautiful sight and sound, brings back boyhood memories. may they keep it going for years to come.
Wonderful video expertly done, for those of us who will never get to see her in person this is pretty darn close! I loved it thanks for sharing!!
Great video. Awesome job by your driver pacing the train. Wow. I had the privilege to be in the cab while under steam in Portland. That takes a lot of bodies in a relatively small space to make that work. Hooray to all involved.
That is one beautifully restored 4-8-4 nice to be able to see it in motion!
4:40 one of the most memorable and awesome railfan video I’ve seen - so cool!
One of the most best train ever. And I want to drive this train when I get older. And also I pretended to blow the whistle. I just love love trains so much.
Saw the 844 come thru Claremore, OK on the N-S route. Met it by Inola & chased it at 80+mph trying to keep up. What an experience - what an engine.
I mean it just looks beautiful in my opinion it's an engineering Marvel that deserves to be respected restored and shown off like this
No restore per se, since this is the only engine to not be retired. It had a brief respite in '59 in storage before being brought back out in '60 for excursion runs.
Oof!! What a beauty! The way she sounds, looks, and moves! This gave me train-bumps! I've never been on a train like that. Great recording, and thanks for sharing.
Great job as always! Thanks Nick!
big wow, thank you and all the men and women who keep this country rolling!
Very good video. For us foamers who can't view the 844 in person your videos mean a lot. You shots from Highway 85 are much appreciated - viewing the running gear. Thank you.

Loved the video, U P, 844, 4-8-4, oil fired, beautiful, also look at U P, 611, could be S P, 611, not sure!!
It's Norfolk and Western
These Wyoming shots make me happy. A bit homesick. Love them.
Fantastic! Truly a machine at steam power's peak; none of the diesel-electric locomotives can hold a candle to the allure, the sounds!, and the majesty of these machines in motion... ... ... ... ...!
There ARE some things that should last forever.
That is truly beautiful , to see apart of American history brought back to life , by the dedicated people who took the time to restore the Engine ... Thank you !!! We need more of that
I fired steamers in 1952 Marysville Ks. to Hastings Ne. U.P. Coal burners with stockers , 230 lbs of steam 70 + mph. hit some curves that you would have to hang on. no radios, only written orders caught by your arm as you passed stations. 132 mi run, stop for coal & water once per trip. Creeped in for water one time scary, some engines were water hogs. rails were 60 ft each & clicked. Cabs were cold & when you hit big snow drifts you were covered with fine snow w/windows closed. Almost hit a lady with child standing in front seat, she never seen us , Axtel Ks. A hog head (engineer) could board your engine anytime to ride with you , see if any rules were being broken, (drinking etc.) Only approved & checked regulary pocket watches were allowed. Each whistle has a meaning, 3 longs 1 short 1 long at each crossing. I got drafted during the Korean War & that ended my railroad days.

Wow! That's quite a story! Thank you for your service. :)

I am sorry it ended your rail days. Thanks for them.
Beautiful. You never get tired of watching the magnificent machine in motion. Fantastic 😅
Beautiful loco. Those guys on the footplate must be thinking that life gets no better than this. Thanks for sharing.

UP 844 is back to her former glory. She is one beautiful Northern!!
Fabulous motion pictures of 844.
In 1991, my dad and I got to see a consist of the 844 AND the 4014 in SLC with the excursion passenger cars and No Diesel. . They took off out of SLC and I caught up on I-15 toward Ogden where we were riding right along with them for a good ways at about 85 mph (dodging traffic) when they suddenly both the 844 and the 4014 must have opened up, because the were off like a SHOT, hitting WAY over 100 in seconds. Last I saw of either. SO MAGNIFICENT.
This is amazing beautiful!! In my country ( Netherlands ) They, re long gone!! Keep them rolling!
er rijden nog stoomtreinen tijdens evenementen zoals Dordt in Stoom op NS lijnen

Col. Angus i would really love to actually see it in person this is a true beauty
It looks happy gliding along on modern track.
Yes that train was amazing saw it in 2010 when it came to Spring Texas
My wife and i just got done with the Durango to silverton trip! Such a happy time!
The low bellow of the whistle god is that not something. Such an amazing workhorse. My dad was a machinist at the Ogden shop the first time he took me to see the 844. I was six or seven years old. It was just so enormous, and the wheels were way way bigger than I was, and there was steam coming out, and the big cattle guard on the front, and I fell in love.
I thought us Brits had some good engines but by golly this is a giant piece of American engineering. As someone else has said, these are living things. May they go on forever.
See if you can find the video titled "Union Pacific 3985 & "Full Throttle" Steve Lee ".
The Big Boy 4014 (4-8-8-4) was recently renovated, you can find some videos of that too. It's larger than this one of course since the 844 is a 4-8-4. They did convert the fuel from coal to #4 fuel oil for practical reasons so it' s not 100% the same as the old train but hey it's running.
@@manw3bttcks
A lot, not all, coal fired engines were converted to oil shortly after WWII because of the uncertainty of coal supplies at that time. Another reason for the conversion was the frequency of fires along rail routes caused by sparks.
These steam engines are railroading history .. thanks UP keeping them alive ..
A 👍great thank you Union Pacific

blowing....Comeing out of Harland Kentucky loaded with Coal....Just
after my Mom tucked me in the Bed....An turned out the light..Hanging
down from the center of my bed room ceiling...Back then our house had
just ben wired for electric lights...One for each room...Anyway....Just
at 12 O'CLOCK ..Every night a 12 i could here that old steamer Whistle
echoing thru the hill back in that place....When I was a child....Sad to
say but all of that is gone now.....And almost me to...For I am old
now...Thanks very much...!
As a Steamfitters for 37 years I can remember staying with grandparents and they live between Simi and moor park and we would Down and watch steam engines coming out of L.A and when I worked as a steamfitters there is nothing more powerful and is something you must respect.
Perfect sound on my speakers in the house I am looking and listening with a Big smile , Thank you
Thank you, Nick! Great pacing shots.
One of my favorite engines, 844, looks and sounds great. Wish I was alive to see these when they ran all the time in the early to mid 1900’s
Absolutely impressive! I would have loved to be at a crossing and felt the ground shake.
Great video, Nick, and great memories. My dad was the Post's Wyoming bureau chief in the '50s and seeing that train arrive was always a treat. In 1973, I interviewed the engineer for channel 5. He would only answer questions by "yes" or "no." Very frustrating, and probably the worst two minutes of television ever presented in Cheyenne.
Love the drive-along footage! That whistle, too!
Just wish I could see 'er starting out.
I drove on the bridge both the day she and 4014 came out of the service barn there in Cheyenne. Didn't realize at first what was happening seeing what looked like giant billowing clouds of white smoke rising up from the train yard covering everything, but then I saw her pulling out of the barn under her own power, now that was a sight to see, and again a year later when 4014 did the same.
The one thing that, sort of, marred my enjoyment of an Amtrak trip Chicago to L.A. was the almost constant horn which is compulsory at ever crossing.
But this machine is awesome!
As a small business owner and supplier for service vehicles we have done repair work for UP for about 10 years on their support and maintenance vehicles. What a beautiful sight to see the steam locomotives. My great uncle was an engineer on the bigboy till it was replaced. Love ❤️ love ❤️ love it❤️!!!
