The 80 series are legit rigs . I got to see what they could do while overseas, they are everywhere and go for ever . Looking forward to watching the build
I think you should throw a good affordable lift on it. Old man emu lifts perform great on this play form and will help stuff the 39s a lot easier and give way more flex.
I love the look of the 80’s series! It can be a really good looking off road vehicle for very little! I love that you picked this truck! Let’s goooo!!! I will be voting! 👍👍👍 I’m on your team!!
Same here, the 80 looks great to me. I'm not planning on my first one being a rock crawler so 33's or 35's would be the max I'd go. If I find a beat up 80 for a second rig then maybe I'd go nuts with that one. My current 1997 80 is in too good of shape to bash it. Overland duty comes to mind.
I’m Pumped for this build! I just sold my vehicross and bought a triple locked 1997 80 series for an overland build. Looking forward to seeing Nate’s take on making a rock crawler!
Look into the 80 series in Australia. For more flex people are doing a flipped arm in the front. The 80 series is a much loved vehicle in Australia and pretty unstoppable
We love them ❤ here in Australia 🇦🇺 most still sell 15000 to 20000 Australian dollars even more for diesel the most sought after the factory turbo diesel version 20000 minimum Most advertised with 400000 km plus Have 2 myself only increasing in value now. absolute off road legends here landcruiser. Waiting lists for over a year for a new one Out of reach for many 300series up to 150000 dollars .
As an Australian with a chopped 80 used for winch challenge events in my experience the front diff in stock form will not tolerate 39’s. I ended using a Nissan GU Patrol front diff to handle the abuse of sticky 37’s. I would also be upgrading the axles studs as they are another well known weak point on big tyres. Overall they are a strong and reliable with limited modifications
Nate is building Sooty USA style and Shaun Whale is visiting the States. Talk about a youtube crossover if the 2 got together. He just got done with his second 80 series build. Would be a hell of a resource.
Re gears, instead of doing diffs, consider doing the T-case with 30% crawler gears on low side and 10% under-drive gears on high side (net a total of 33% lower in 4-low). T-case gears are more budget friendly and 4.11 stock diff gears are stronger. I wheel these gears with 37 KM3s on a 3" lift and it drives reasonably well on highways and has been unstoppable on trails so far.
Having a Samurai (Sierra) I was thrilled you decided to build one and now I have a 105 series landcruiser and you are building an 80. Keenly watching both builds.
Also please show detail on re-routing your air condit. dryer when you build the front bumper! 80 lovers the world over will rejoice with this knowledge from a plumber with your skills!
Agreed. I respect the decision to go Land Cruiser here, but I would have loved to see him try this with a Discovery. I am not sure how he is going to build this up reliably for under $15,000 (the 80’s Series are so sought after they are pricey even in awful condition), but I know for a fact you can build a fully locked Disco with a boatload of new parts (air lockers, HD driveshafts, lift kit/shocks, rock sliders, bull bumper/winch, etc.) 6:18 for around $15k because I just did it.
We've built a.few.80s up over the years. Absolutely a great rig for a multitude of reasons! We're currently building a 200 series gas hog! My vote is in! Go Toyota. Go LC
Lets go vote they are behind as of making this post and now dave is on hus team he should have o big fallowing this is going to be tje best build by far
Makes me miss my fj60 one of the best off rad stock vehicles i have had the pleasure of owning!!! Would still have it but had to sell to pay bills. Could almost come to a complete stop just down shifting in the snow. Cant wait to see the build! Thanks for the great videos!!!!!!!!!
I love the 80 series! One day I’ll own one! I daily a 86 4Runner and I’m about to buy an 85 pickup that needs an engine. I love my old Toyotas! I’m happy to see you build one!
I saw the missing radius arm bolt at 1:44 and wanted to react 😂😂 We use 80 series axles in our competition buggy. We welded a rear dif in the front. Much stronger and bigger than the original front dif and we carry one spare now. Further, if you stick 37” under this car you will break birfield joints. Now we run 40” in our competition buggy with Longfield shafts in the front and never broke one joint. Including racing Breslau extreme.(Google it, it’s in Germany and Poland. I am Dutch by the way). Only thing is, running these “softer” Longfield axles for longer distances when overlanding for example, they will wear quickly. So a 2wd/4wd transfer conversion would be smart.
This is my kind of build! Buy the best platform for your needs that you can afford, swap out the least amount of parts possible while making choice upgrades to increase capability/reliability. Can't wait to see how this plays out :-)
Yet another reason to love your channel. Keep up the great content. I'm taking lessons from your trailer but heading in a different direction. I am starting with the back half of 2nd gen tacoma frame to pull behind my 4th gen 4runner. Easy to match ride height/lift as the build progresses, same axle for an identical track width with matching rim/tire combo. From there I start a modular build. Flat deck for atv/snomobile/utility? Stock bed/cap camper? Tear drop that bolts on? Toyota did the bed mounts and cab mounts on the same plane. I have about 10-12 feet to work with for a flat bed or tear drop that should hold with 8 "body mounts" if I make their bases strong enough. Pickup bed has 6 bolts and leaves 2 and space for a 2 seat booth or a grilling box on the tongue.
I have a land cruiser on 40/13.50r17 with a small lift (30spl shafts, bigger hub studs on all 4 corners, upgraded knuckle and stronger rear links are a must!) I found out the hard way
Owned and daily drive one these for 5 years even have the very hee are rd find factory elockers but recently sold the 10 mpg and being awd and parts so expensive couldn’t take anymore so excited for this build
I approve. I love the 80 series and LX450s. A lot of FJ55 guys are putting the 55 body on these frames. Get a good looking and unique wagon on a capable platform.
I’m Solid Axle Swapping my Toyota Prado (on my channel) using the 80 series platform for the front The stock 80 series front end, with flipped stock radius arms is insanely good from factory That and a proper triangulated rear 4 link with good shocks and these things go insanely well 👌🏻
There's a lot of reasons why the UN chose this rigs in their petrol and diesel versions, LCs 80s are so good that you could go away with a 33 or 35, 2" lift and a locker and you should be able to tackle down most challenges! They're value has gone up like crazy due to being a perfect platform to build on
Nate. I built a lot of BJ-40s, BJ-44s, 70 series, and 80 series Landcruisers in Japan. The base models, in the 1980s & 90s, had factory cable actuated lockers front and rear. The 80 series also had the option of e-lockers. All factory Toyota, rear full-floats, and all. The best part? Each are 4 or 6 cylinder diesels. 70 and 80 series had turbos. I sold my 1982 BJ-44, that I imported, after retiring from the USMC. Sadly, I had to sell it a few years later.
Spend the $400 on an OME lift. I’m on 35s and 2.5 heavy springs.. I don’t rub flares but I rub inner fender on the rear bad at full flex. I think with 39s you’ll just get bound up and stuck
hydroboost conversion was a great upgrade once my tires got big. Vacuum pump on the 80 didn't cut it for me. Also just made since with my cummins conversion, but I know on mud people have done it for toyota pump. Been wanting to remove my LX panels as well. Just don't want to weld all the holes, curious to see your solution. Love all you content but I've never gotten to follow on a vehicle I own as well. Very excited!
I’m excited to see what you do with this thing. I know nothing about them. We are Jeep people. I wish I would’ve seen it in Moab. We did pass you on a trail in your gladiator. I didn’t recognize you until after I talk to you and you left.
This will be fun to watch, for all of the LC80 builds out there you don't see many videos of actually doing the build. Around my area even rusty beater Land Cruisers are $25k.
@dirtlifestyle Sumo transfer case hears UD and compound low gears 3:1 if that's not enough then go to the diffs but I'm not sure that's even necessary. Check out the Aussie 80 series mods. These things are incredible without all the typical American mods needed. Sick! I'm building an 80 at the moment too and just finished an engine rebuild and transfer case gear swap series. Let me know if you have any questions while they're fresh in my mind.
When you have no money or resources and you attempt to take on the United States military this is the vehicle you choose for battle. It’s the perfect choice for this competition. I’ll be watching you win.
Nate... Gotta get some videos up to remind people to go vote! You can do it! We can do it! Go VOTE for Nate! Come on guys! I want to see Nate go to the Ultimate Adventure!
Im probably going to need to buy a new/new to me car and i was looking at old lexus gx and lx so it goes without saying that this is the most excited I've ever been for one of your builds. I'm sure it's going to be great
LX450, the exact one I have. Best thing about the Lexus, is it’s just an all optioned Land Cruiser. Back in the 90’s, all Lexus was is rebadged Toyota for a walk around for import restrictions. Today, Lexus models are different than their Toyota counterparts. So, one major thing the LX has that only optioned Land Cruisers have, is it’s tripple locked

He isnt getting 39's under that without a lot of cutting ,, lift or no lift,
As the owner of an LX - It's fun when people KNOW what it really is.
You guys need gq patrols they make the cruiser drive lines look like cute little toys

In stock form they are pretty capable, add lockers even better. If you like your body panels then add sliders and front and rear bars
