The slightly awkward transition at 10:39 is due to me cutting out something from the video. There used to be a part at the end where I was talking about the analytics of my TH-cam channel, but I decided to remove it.
As a fan that grew up watching the Texans, I’ve always thought it was mental. He just sorta snapped one day. I think too many picks and too many hits got to him and he became hesitant. That’s what I’ve always thought. Hard to bounce back from some real fears. Pro football ain’t easy nor meant for everyone. Mad respect for how long he played at a high level
Just found out he retired at the end of this season. That's really sad. That game he had with the Falcons throwing over 400 yards in 2019 proved he still had something to give
How Schaub never got another shot perplexes me to this day. It's incredible to think that guys like Ryan Fitzpatrick and Matt Cassel always seemed to be in the running somewhere, but Schaub was never taken seriously again. I almost wonder if it could be nothing more than a fluke -- a series of bad games lumped together for no apparent reason, just as every QB has once in a while, but they just so happened to occur during a season when the entire team was collapsing. I dunno. Schaub is in the same boat as Chris Chandler for me. Didn't find success right away, but in his middle years, his numbers were really good, and definitely above average compared to other QBs of the time. But just as Schaub became known for one bad season, Chandler became known for one fatal flaw as well: his minor (but seemingly constant) injuries. Both guys played as backups into their late 30s after having started for one team for a long time (the Falcons, in Chandler's case). It's really too bad, though, because growing up I have such fond memories of watching Schaub play. I just can't believe he's been forgotten, except to be laughed at for one bad year. That seems so unfair. This video managed to capture all of that really, really well. Amazing work.
Matt Schaub is still one of my favorite quarterbacks in NFL history. The dude had to bring that Texans out of irrelevance and almost always came to the challenge every year, and led us to our first two playoff appearances since the Oilers left the state. That 2013 season is still one of the worst memories of my childhood. People love to blame Schaub, but that season affected the entire team negatively. It felt like everything was against them in that year.
He struggled cause our Shithole Fan base started giving up on him around 2010 then Schaub and Andre Johnson put tha Texans on tha Map with Playoff appearances
I think it was all just mental for Schaub. Didn't have the greatest arm to begin with, but his drop off was so sudden in 2013, I think the pressure of the fans, maybe his own coaches/teammates was just too much. Maybe nagging injuries played a role. Shame, I thought Schaub was a decent player. Another guy that immediately fell off was Marc Bulger after the 2006 season. In 2007 he just completely crumbled, and was never the same (his issue was too many hits in my mind). Jake Delhomme also like you said in 2009.
Whoa! I forgot all about Marc Bulger. He was really good for a few years there. Trent Green suffered a similar drop off after years of success, but Green was already really old by then (like 37-ish? Definitely older than Bulger would have been) and had two insanely bad concussions to blame for it. But it was like he just got really shaky after that and was never right again, sort of like you're saying with Bulger.
i think it was a combination of age mobility and definitely arm strength dbs didnt respect his deep ball anymore so they just jammed and jumped all his receivers
I remember the 2013 season, it was like being continually stabbed one game after another. It was horrible and there wasn’t any way to pinpoint why this was happeneing, but mental makes sense
I 100% believe his bad 2013 was mental. And he never fully recovered from the mental side. The talent was there even after he left Houston. 2019 he had a great 400 yard game with Atlanta. It was unfortunate. I personally believe he put to much pressure on himself and he snapped
I always tell people that schaub was literally him and had a bad season. I was a kid watching the Texans make it to the playoffs for the first Time and MATT SCHAUB took em there
Still love Matt, was always a Texans fan and he was our first good QB. My older brother disliked him, but loved watching him and AJ. We have Watson now, or at least for now lol
I think Flacco's collapse is a lot easier to explain. He was good enough that if you put the right pieces around him then he could win a Superbowl. That is a lot more than you can say for most of the people who have tried their hand at being an NFL QB. Anyway, after he won the SB MVP, he asked for and rightfully got a huge payout. In the salary cap era, when you get a massive salary then you really need to be able to carry the offense since the team won't be able to pay for a lot of other talent. Joe just wasn't good enough to do that. Still as a Raven's fan, I can't complain about a few years of mediocre play after a big SB win.
As a Texans fan, I will always love Matt Schaub. He came in at a point where Carr was pretty much not fully going to work out and we were in Qb limbo and he was phenomenal. I was sad when I found out he was traded and retired. I’m also looking forward to the future with CJ but you can’t forget the people who brought you there. Thanks Carr and Schaub, y’all are awesome
In my opinion this guy was the best quarterback that Texans for a long time Matt is better then Watson I feel sorry for his career I'm happy that he had good days in Houston I'm a fan of all teams so this is just a heroic career
I do miss him a lot us Texans fan down here that actually live near Houston or in Houston we do always say that he was the best Texans Quarterback for a couple years and we do miss him but we move on but we will never forget him.
this happens to alot of qbs the difference is its kinda rare for any starting qb to have a 7 year job security window has the starter with one team like the story on matthew Stafford will be interesting when its all said and done ...will he retire a lion prob not
Definitely mental, he was a good quarterback.. im a life long Jags fan and im 33 years old so I had to watch the Texans beat the dog shit out of us twice a year lol, and those were the dark Days in Jacksonville when we had Blaine Gabbert and Chad Henne 🤦 so it was brutal.. but during that time period until 2013 I always looked at Matt Schuab as one of the top QBs in the league, but like you mentioned in this video, the city turning against him for having a couple bad games, and then even his own teammates were giving him that bad energy. He was always good, and he never had to deal with the pressure of trying to play better... It was just too much for him to handle and it made him play worse cuz he was probably nervous all the time.. honestly that sucks, I feel like he should have had a much longer and fruitful career ...but hey we are only human.
Matt Schaub was one of those good enough game managing QBs who can look elite at some times but was never elite to begin with. Schaub looked good during these years because: '08-'09 - Andre Johnson and a great o-line '10-'12 - Andre Johnson, a great o-line, Arian Foster, addition of Wade Phillips' defense (went from ranked last passing defense in '10 to #1 in '11) In 2013, Gary Kubiak's offense started to look extremely predictable. You can tell from the formation they run whether it'll be a bootleg pass or a run. And with Schaub who makes Brady look like he's Usain Bolt, predictable bootleg pass plays would lead to easy sacks. This predictable offense led to the poor play of Matt Schaub affecting the mental aspect of his game. The boiling point of Schaub's game mental meltdown was going down on an injury and classless Texans fans cheering that he got injured. Anyone who knows football and watched Schaub play knew he was good but not great. He would look elite against bum to mediocre teams but when it comes to going up against playoff contending team he would typically choke.

Pre-2013 Schaub was always just an average quarterback that put up stats because how poor Houston's defense was and he had Andre Johnson. He was basically Kirk Cousins.
Schaub was actually a good QB. He made good reads and had arm strength to put it into the basket. The stats weren't anything like Jameis Winston where he has 5000 yards but 30 picks, because he had an actual RB to take some of the load off him. Andre Johnson, yes, is a great WR, but it's not like the Texans had really anyone else to throw to. Owen Daniels is a solid TE, but not a game changer. So, the team really just had a decent o-line, a great WR, and a great 5 year RB with a QB who fell off the map after going from a QB who made decisions smartly to a guy who couldn't throw into his receivers arms to save their lives.
Yeah, but you could say that for almost any QB you want to discredit: "Oh, Montana's only good because he has Rice to throw to." Schaub was really good for several years despite coming into a team that had never won anything before, had struggled to protect its QBs for years, and played in a division with Peyton Manning. Despite all that, he STILL found a way to put up monstrous stats. Schaub was a good QB in his prime. Tough as nails too. Anyone remember that game where he lost a chunk of his ear?
