    It's always bad when a repair has to be better than new because of a design flaw. When I saw the bearing, my first thought was that it's awful small compared to the gear it supports.

    Really a shame that gearbox isn't built any more robust than that. Hopefully the repair will hold up, but if it does, the customer will want you to fix all of them. Bailey must still be working from home, social distancing and all. As I typed that, you explained where Bailey was at the end of the video.

    Wow, first! Brian, you did not show the cover piece that goes on the front as we look at it, would it have helped to run some dowels parallel to your new bolts that run all the way to the front cover to help support your new insert? Not sure what mower that is off of, we ran two NH411's over tens of thousand of acres and never had a box failure. On another note, I see a few bigger machine shops in the Cincy area are auctioning off, lots of high dollar stuff probably going to be selling for pennies on the dollar, any goodies you have on your wish list? It really is a poor design. I think the farmer has like 12 of these things they have accumulated from the pair of mowers they run. I was like why don't you buy something else? They really like how they cut though and they pull light and easy. They don't like the Deere because it is heavy and pulls hard.

    Did you have any difficulty getting the mesh of the bevel gears set properly? Seems like moving the pinion in or out a small amount could wreak havoc. Probably no worse than what they have already been through though wit the shrapnel that was probably flying around.

    Well engineering! If that is a gear box for a three disk bat wing mower, no Matter who makes it they all run hot. And beat themselves to death from being out of balance. Each blade disk get damaged as soon as start mowing, all the out balance, transferring to the box, blow it up. Not much can be done. Except like you say make twice the size . Then be too big for the mower deck

    • @bcbloc02
      @bcbloc02  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would probably take parts from all those boxes to get one pieced together. It took 4 boxes to find enough good shafts and gears to piece this one together. Usually the gears get heat damaged from running out of oil when the bottom breaks. The customer found the supports were worn for the cutterbar letting it move around more than it should and side loading the shaft making the bearings fail. Definitely check all that out too. I don't remember exactly what this repair was but I think it was between $1000 and $1500.

    Looks like that bit exploded because the part slipped in the vice. You can see the part lifting off the parallels just before Ba-boom. : )

      No I hit the rapids up instead of down because I was used to the G&L controls which are reversed. Lack of thinking on my part. You can't shove a drill bit thru an inch of steel.

      It exploded because he moved the table up, when he was supposed to go in the opposite direction, thus crushing the drill. Even if the part was welded to the vice, the drill would not be able to withstand those forces.

    interesting, and breaking after only around 2,000 hrs. (but did last longer than your drill:-)). Where is New Holland equipment made these days? Can't tell by looking at the parent CNH Industrial. Nice work but a lot of work.

    Just curious, you use the DRO for hole layouts or did you do it manually? That box does look small for oil cooling, not a lot of outside surface area to disperse the heat out to. Nice job Brian!

I always iver build items for strength over saving 5 bucks in materials. Great job others will be sending you more to do. Thanks Brian

    Hallo Brian.
    The drill would never have broken off if you had pulled out the several times and added oil.
    As a mechanic, you actually know that.

      That is not true. The bit broke because I accidentley tried to rapid feed it thru the part by grabbing the wrong lever. There was no chip packing or heating issue. You can't push a drill bit thru steel at an inch/second.

    Cool video Brian. It is fun and a challenge to re-engineer things. I have a Colchester lathe, the same one as Kieth Fenner, and I am re-engineering the power feeds in the apron. Quite a challenge but it is going to be great when finished. Check out my videos of my progress.
