    [FOR EVERBODY'S INFORMATION]
    I've seen a lot of comments stating that they were disappointed because this is not the "great duel" they were expecting to happen between Dumbledore and Grindelwald.
    Let me say this and correct me if 'm wrong. I think this is not yet the duel where Albus Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald were famous for. This is more like the "end-of-our-relationship" duel between the two great wizards or perhaps, we could say, just one of their duels. With that in mind, the "great duel of legend" that happened between Dumbledore and Grindelwald took place in 1945, where Dumbledore gained possession of the Elder Wand and Grindelwald was imprisoned. This duel in the end of the Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, however, according to some sources I looked, happened in year 1932. Probably, the great duel which the two wizards were famous for will be featured in Film 4 or 5 of the franchise, depending on Warner Bros.' decision. That's all. Thank you! :))

      J.K. confirmed when she announced this series that the final movie will be in 1945. Considering that this movie ends with Grindelwald cleared of all charges except now trying to murder a 32 year old whos already dying, he still has the German Ministry in his pocket and we know that the magical government communicates with the muggle heads of their countries to keep themselves hidden from the main series. This leads me to believe that Grindelwald will use the ministry and possibly the imperius curse on Adolf Hitler to build his forces and manipulate all of Germany to begin world war 2. What the best way to burn down their world if your own kind wont back you up to do it? you make them kill themselves.
      TLDR: Movie 4 will take place 1939 and show that Grindelwald has manipulated all of Germany and it will end with World War 2 beginning and Movie 5 will take place in 1945 and the final Duel between Dumbledore and Grindelwald will happen on D-Day as a way to cover up the Magical World's involvment with the Nazi's

      @@thesonicgaminggod6956 Cant really commit to what Im feeling about this. Is it dissapointment? Today im leaning towards apathy. It just that this whole series was predicated upon some concepts that we never heard of in the Lore. I get it, i get it, Rowling is trying to piece together a story in the backwards direction. Tolkien kinda did that, but he was very meticulous about his world building, and only a few concepts ever contradict the overall theme, from one end to the other.
      In Rowling's case, it seems she is just stretching a story built on one single premise, a "battle" everyone knows about, a battle nobody really see, and the cementing of a legacy that could not be shaken. However, so far we got 2 talented wizards, just about equal, and im bored. Come one bruh, give Gman the wand, the cape, anything you want. Make him strong, make him invincible, give him complicated spells, runes, incantations, out-of-left field thinking and maneuvering... Build him to be an unstoppable and undebatable god-wizard, and then have Dumble face that.
      As it is now, I have NEVER (ever ever?) never !!! had any doubt yet that good ole Dumble could lose. Boring.

      @@zettkusanagi6322 I agree that their execution has not been good. Honestly i feel the only action scene with a sense of urgency was the chase in the prison with the manticore like creatures. Dumbledore even performed way more interesting magic earlier in the film in his duel with Aurelius. im guessing the only lore reason as to why this duel wasnt better is because they are shocked that they can even fight at all and Dumbledore could be holding back because he still loves Grindelwald even though he does eventually have to stop him.

    Can we take a moment to appreciate Aberforth being JUST as prepared to take on Grindelwald as he's about to cast the killing curse on Credence?? He already lost his sister to this dude, he wasn't gonna let him kill his son. I was honestly rooting for Aberforth in this movie to have a duel with Grindelwald. We know from the HP movies, the dude had a nuke of a Patronus. Aberforth may be a bartender with a thing for goats, but you DO NOT mess with his family.
    IMO this scene should've been a 2 v 1 Duel, and save the Dumbledore v Grindelwald for the next film. Aberforth needed this scene.

      Even though you might be right, you also forget how quickly Grindelwald overwhelmed Dumbledore. When their wands collided firstly he overwhelmed Dumbledore once, when they collided again he pushed Dumbledore back like in seconds but this time Dumbledore did the same, only much slower. Their fight may have ended in a stalemate but Grindelwald moved alot faster than Dumbledore and overwhelmed him much quicker which indicates that the Elder Wand amplified Grindelwald power. Either way Dumbledore told Harry he won the final by mere skill which might leave alot of room open for Grindelwald being a little stronger in terms of power. We will just have to see how the final battle will go down but I think Grindelwald with the Elder Wand is a little bit stronger than Dumbledore.

    What makes an Epic movie duel more Epic is the backstory, the context, the feeling, the emotion, the reason for the fight. Anakin vs. Obi Wan, Hector vs. Achilles, Rocky vs. Drago. The epic movements, the good spectacular choreography, the action make it more Epic, but the most important thing is not what you see, it's what makes you feel. Epic dueling is philosophical, poetic, metaphorical, exciting, ,its Art.

      @@distractdisturb9228 Johnny is a good actor, but Grindelwald isn't like Voldemort. He's a cult of personality, he was trying to convince people by words that muggleborn are their enemy and only relying on violence when it was necessary...even though he was arguably more powerful than Voldemort on sheer skill alone and actually, truly owned the Elder Wand.
      It didn't make sense that he looked so eccentric compared to everyone else, even his own followers, and then even to Dumbledore. Voldemort was fucked up and drunk on power, he didn't need to look pretty or make great speeches. He was a psychopathic serial killer cult leader. Grindelwald is not that, and Mads' interpretation of the character is far superior in that respect. The way he talked, how he acted out his plans, it was believable that others could fall into the trap of his oratory skills. This is a man who is trying to convince you that the wider population of the world does not deserve to be treated like human beings and that he should be in charge, he is *literally* wizard Adolf Hitler. Why the fuck would anyone believe someone with that haircut, that mustache, those mannerisms that Depp's character used? He looks like a tool, he acts like a tool, and anyone with a brainstorm will immediately pick this crackhead out as a bad guy. Mads' performance, particularly during the big election scene, was a lot more realistic. He looked controversial but at the same time persuasive.
      The fact that you didn't watch the movie, and the fact you're relying on ratings to prove your argument, just show you'd prefer to be asinine. The ratings of FB3 were shit because the story writing was shit. Anytime people talk about this movie, one of the strongest points is going to be Mads' performance. You're writing that as if his replacing Johnny Depp was the sole reason it flopped...and the funny part? You're bringing up the first movie, where Depp had what...two lines and one brief appearance, and Colin Farrell did all the actual heavy lifting?
      Johnny's a great actor but his interpretation of the character was beyond stupid, looks, dialogue, all of it. Not once did I believe that anyone could buy what Depp's Grindelwald was selling. That's not his fault, he was just miscasted into a role that should've been used by someone with a more classy posture. Depp's character was someone I would 100% have rather seen in the HP movies as one of Voldemort's followers.

    You know I wish I could watch this scene for the first time again. I enjoyed but didn’t love the entire movie (I still thought it was good overall) but this scene was amazing. The music, the suspense and the action sequence was very cool and exactly what I wanted as a HP fan. I hope they do another film and we get to see the famous great duel between them.
    I know people have their theories on how the duel turned out and I agree with those who believe Grindlewald wasn’t fully committed and the elder wand realised this. However I also like to think that Dumbledore was holding back during the first half of the duel, sending non killing curses and whatnot and when Grindlewald was winning the spell link, Dumbledore realised he had to commit to beating Grindlewald and thus stepped it up, whilst still remaining true to his believe in good and obviously not killing Grindlewald. I feel you can see this when Dumbledore looks at the spell and then at Grindlewald like “you’re winning this and even though I don’t want to hurt you, I have to stop you” and then extends his arm pushing the spell back. You can also see in his eyes how upset he is at having to do this and credit has to go to them both for great acting.
    I also want to say, I’m REALLY proud that the film wanted to introduce a gay relationship without shoving it down our throats. I thought the balance was perfect and the bit at the end with them having their hands on each other’s chests was actually very lovely and emotional.

    I am unhappy with how David Yates handles wizard duels. He has directed every wizarding film from Order of the Phoenix to The Secrets of Dumbledore and, on the topic of dueling, I feel his contributions are not great.
    Underage wizards cast nonverbal spells without difficulty, and the effect is weak: a wisp of colorless magical energy that blasts a person backwards. Nearly every spell cast by a Hogwarts student or a member of the Order of the Phoenix looks and performs this way.
    However, my largest grievance with Mr. Yates here is the "spell beam battle" that takes place in so many wizard duels. In the Goblet of Fire novel this is described as occurring between Harry and Voldemort's spells due to their shared connection and their wands being brothers, essentially... an effect of Priori Incantatum. However, this same effect occurs between Dumbledore and Voldemort in OotP, between Arthur Weasley and a Death Eater in Deathly Hallows: Part 2, between Harry and Voldemort in Deathly Hallows: Part 2, between Tina and Graves/Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts, and Dumbledore and Grindelwald in this film. I don't think it's very evocative.
    Easily the best duel in the films would be between Dumbledore and Voldemort in The Order of the Phoenix, which possessed more variety and nuance than all of the others. And, interestingly, when that film was released I thought then that the duel could have been done better.

Their spells (attacks and betrayal on one another) damaging the environment (their battlespace a kind of neglected paradise/safe space between them) is a nice touch. this fight choreography is brilliant - i don't care what anyone else says.
    it speaks so much about how not only how equally they're matched, but also how similar their fighting styles are: They both use Apparition defensively (something we've never seen any other wizards do because Apparating is not an easy feat at all), they can predict what the other is going to do and turn just as they reappear, both Albus and Gellert physically dodge spells in addition to using Protego shields, and lastly, the two of them come about arm's length to each other (another thing we've never seen any other wizards do, simply because it's so dangerous.) this battle is so unique in its own right, especially with how their hands end up on each other's hearts in the end.
    the magic here looks epic; the two of them are so powerful yet their dynamic has been so chaotic that not only is their magic causing the surrounding structure to break but also levitate around them. yes, it's in "blood troth realm" but the magic causing all destruction is Albus and Gellert's, and the destruction is to symbolic tot he breaking of the blood troth and the breaking of their hearts.
    it's a wonderful scene. i wish it had been longer, even though it's perfectly understandable why it's so short. I'd gladly watch a movie based on Albus Dumbledore's journey alone, with the FB characters making cameos. i want to see Dumbledore and Grindelwald's legendary battle of '45 and I really love both their characters so much.

      Sorry but this duel is dull despite of it supposedly being the two most powerful wizards. It’s not that creative, just average spells flying at each other and the typical “spells meeting each other” like a laser tug of war. All the CGI effects nowadays take away from realism. And it’s all happening in some weird dream like dimension. They did it earlier with credence too. It just makes it more like a fantasy. Spells seem more real when they react to a REAL environment. Then they get so close to each other that it seems like it’s going to evolve into a physical brawl. But I guess they needed them to get close enough so they can touch hearts so we can get a ‘emotional’ teary moment. The Producers here were lazy. You know, a lot of people are confused about how the Avada Kadavra spell was able to break the Love Bond Grindelwald and Dumbledore had, myself included. But as of late, I was kinda thinking about it, and I came to a kind of weird headcanon that helps me digest it a bit better. I think about how in Deathly Hallows Pt. 2, Voldemort used it on Harry and how it didn’t kill Harry. Yes, Harry basically had possession of all the Deathly Hallows at that moment and yes, what the AK spell ended up striking was the Horcrux WITHIN Harry, thus not killing Harry, himself. But think about what it takes to destroy a Horcrux. It takes mythical items or the body parts of powerful magical creatures to destroy. But apparently, an Avada Kadavra can destroy it as well. So it makes me wonder if the actual function of the AK spell is a bit more complex than just “killing” whatever it targets. I wonder if the more appropriate description is that it “brings and end” to whatever it targets. It “brings an end” to anything living that it strikes. It “brings an end” to powerful magical items like the Horcruxes. And here, it brought an end to the magical covenant Dumbledore and Grindelwald shared. I feel that understanding of the spell applies best to every use of it we’ve seen throughout every series.

      It is repeatedly said that you need to truly "mean" a curse for it to work. When Dumbledore said "He sought to kill, I sought to protect," it very much made sense to me. Grindelwald fully intended to kill Credence, Dumbledore fully intended to protect him. He clearly blames himself for Ariana's death and loves Aberforth. He would not see his brother suffer again by having his son taken away from him. This could be a similar kind of love protection that led to Voldemort being unable to harm Harry after Lily's death. Two such opposing forces collided, creating magic powerful enough to break the bond.

    • @benaffblack
      @benaffblack ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Avadakedavra doesn't break the spell. It's fully confirmed that the only way for the blood bond to break is for both of them to clash spells that have no intent to harm of each other. Which would be considered impossible because in the context of them being lovers, they could never harm each other if they were angry at one another, and they would never fire spells at the other on a whim.
      Meaning the spell could only be broken when they truly had different goals and objectives. Dumbledores spell was to protect credence, and Grindlewalds was to kill Credence.

This fight alone moved me, especially the part where they held each others hearts, it really marked the end of their relationship. It was kinda obvious that they couldn't fight each other because of their feelings.

    • @rrraynoorrr

      This wasn't the end of their relationship though. That final fight takes place years later and should be much more epic than this. Remember, dumbledore defeats Grindelwald and takes the elder wand.

    • @ldragopegasis2
      @ldragopegasis2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The pact broke because Dumbledore didn't cast a spell against Grindelwald directly, he cast it to protect Credence. Because he didn't cast directly against Grindelwald, he didn't move against him but rather the spells met.

    • @sylquinn4075
      @sylquinn4075 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Their Blood Pact broke because they took irreconcilably and directly opposing actions: attempting to kill Credence and attempting to save him from the other's spell. There is a parting of the ways here, where the two acknowledge each other as enemies, and thus the Blood Pact binding them as allies is shattered by their mutual consent to fight, against its purpose. I believe that the important part is that they both agree to the enmity by clashing spells, instead of one of them attacking the other without the other wishing to attack back. The mutuality, not the indirectness, is critical here.

    I find it telling (although there are many who think otherwise) that it's Grendelwald that caresses Dumbledore. He's the one in this duel who broke, letting his emotions shows. Dumbledore seeing this, stopped the duel. It's a duel that ended in a forfeit, on both their parts. I've read way too many comments and postulations saying that Grendelwald never truly loved Dumbledore in the first place, that he was just using him for his mind. I think, in this duel, Dumbledore broke something in Grendelwald right here. Something that Gellert didn't even contemplate to be possible, Dumbledore never truly loved him the way he did. Dumbledore, while gay, was only in a true "Bostonian Marriage." A relationship of convenience that Dumbledore felt was enough to quench his, then, latent homosexuality. It wasn't until long after the final duel that Dumbledore realized that what he had with Gellet was much more and therefore much more dangerous then he ever really understood.

    • @ceciliacacciatori5852
      @ceciliacacciatori5852 2 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      I totally disagree. Both Dumbledore and Grindelwald have always been aware of the depth of the feelings they had for each other. The way Dumbledore speaks about their relationship in front of Newt and Theseus ("What posessed you to do such a thing? "Love"(smile+ tender, dramma look)/ "the summer Gellert and I fell in love"), the way he escapes not only from a direct confrontation with Grindelwald but even from his own feelings (see Mirror of Erised scene in CoG), the existence of the blood troth itself...as well as what we know from Rowling's, Law's and Mikkelsen's declarations, clearly prove the two were fully aware of the power of their mutual feelings and of the implications of the latter. Because, besides love, there are also a deep sense of guilt for Dumbledore (who loved a criminal and Muggle-hater, who had diserted him when his sister died) and a feeling of bitterness and disappointment for Grindelwald (who loved someone who had turned his back to the plans they had made together and, indirectly, to him). But these "by- feelings" would not be there without a deep consciousness of their bond. Such consciousness was already there in their youth (which is, by the way, why Dumbledore has been heart-broken since they parted as teenagers) and it was what pushed them to create the blood troth. And it is clear that, at least until the duel, Dumbledore have always been the more fragile of the two, the one who more openly admitted his feelings, the one who "wore his heart on his sleeve" (beautiful how they metaphorically expressed it by having him keep the blood troth on his wrist). I would say, for Dumbledore, the ultimate proof of his ever-going love for Grindelwald is the image he sees reflected in the Mirror of Erased, while for Grindelwald, before their confrontation in Buthan, there was never a "moment of truth", he always knew he loved Dumbledore, but probably until the duel he had never realized how much he needed him and feared to loose his love, which is why he was the one more shocked and upset by it.

    I too was disappointed that a part 4 isn’t currently in the works. Eventually we will get the real duel. But it’s likely to be years. Maybe even a decade. Fantastic beasts has been a huge letdown and people are burned out by a series that doesn’t remotely live up to Harry Potter standards. The pandemic didn’t help. People didn’t want to go to the theater and turned to piracy which cost the studio hundreds of millions. The Johnny depp trial didn’t help. But fans still want to see this duel. I do. Eventually we’ll get the duel but expect it to be 2030 something. We really don’t need two more movies, but this duel is the one piece of HP folklore that’s still missing (well, there’s a lot they can still do, Cursed Child, movies about the House founders, etc, but I don’t think what they’ll make justifies the budget, maybe a TV series eventually?) and with better directing and a good trailer, advertising the true end of the Harry Potter universe, they can get people out to theaters one more time, and we can put a period on the series with part 4 ending with the greatest duel of all time and the imprisonment of Grindelwald. It’s not uncommon to put a series on the back burner for a decade, let everybody cool off, and let the creative juices get going again before coming back better than before.

    ...I'm quite happy to side eye Dumbledore's actions within the HP canon narrative (and the fanon ones too) but goodness I'm feeling for him here (and this movie in particular). The stalemate with the hand on chest. And the complicated feels between these two (yes even Grindelwald in his warpedness). Gaaaah. Clutches at own chest.

      He has no bloody charisma. The only Grindelwald vibe emanating from him is that he and Law have good chemistry and they could really be lovers, and that's it. As for the rest, Johnny Depp was much far more convincing.

    I love Mads. But imagine if Johnny Depp was still Grindelwald, he looked more badass and dangerous. In the books Grindelwald was very powerful at his prime, and nearly conqured Europe. Voldemort fought against a school. Even when Grindelwald was old and frail, he laughed in Voldemorts face refusing to reveal the location of the Elder Wand ”Kill me then Voldemort! I welcome death, you will never win” laughing as Voldemort kills him in utter frustration. Grindelwald was a more cool Dark Lord than Voldemort. Imo

    We least expect it to be 10 mins

    Dumbledore realized mid fight during the clash the of their two spells that Grindlewald really wanted to kill him, which surprised him because of their past. From then on, Dumbledore didn't hold back.

      No, it’s actually the opposite… he saw that Grindelwald could beat him, but he stopped at the very last moment, which is when Dumbledore looked at him and realised now was his chance to try and disarm him. Also the spell was red not green so it wasn’t the killing curse

    Really shows how powerful Dumbledore is. He is fighting a dark lord that has the elder wand in hand. And just completely overpowers him. The strongest wand in existence in the hands of a powerful dark lord, and Dumbledore easily pushes him back. This isnt movie Dumbledore, this is book dumbledore.
