  • With prices of new road bikes at an all time high, is the second hand market that smart place to go for a used road bike bargain? I scoured eBay for some of the best deals and was surprised with what I found

Lol I’ve been riding for over 23 years now, have climbed up Alpe D’ Huez, and have never bought a brand new bike. ALL my bikes have been second hand. Great video.

This was fun. There are obviously some terrific deals to be found...really liked that Team Sky edition Pinarello. High-end bikes from the early 2000s are great, lightweight and good components. I recently bought a bike I had wanted for years, a full -Campagnolo Chorus Colnago C40. It was on E-Bay in Italy and I paid the equivalent of 850 GBP. While in excellent condition, it warranted some upgrades, so with new Zonda wheels, cassette, chain, Fizik handlebars and saddle it was not so cheap by the time I was done! But making the bike your own is part of the pleasure and the result is really beautiful. It is truly an iconic bicycle and rides brilliantly, far above what my athletic ability can reach. Compared to buying a new Colnago, I could travel to Italy with it and ride around in Tuscany for a few weeks with the money saved.

I bought a wilier 2009 MODEL - had a trip computer and had been ridden 3 times only, impulse buy and hung up in a garage. Fella sold it back to the original shop when he was having a clear out. Shop put it on ebay. After 5 or 6 detailed messages i bought it - true to its word, the bike was showroom condition 100% original with the original dealer price ticket at base of the frame. full campag, changed seat and stem to deda superzero and had a better set of wheels. it cost me a 1/3 of its original cost, it is as brand new, rides amazing and i worked out to buy equivalent today - after a lot of searching and research i have a cracker n+1. My advice is there are some great buys out there and there are some bags of spanners. Need to really do your research on what you want budget and checking the deal. Luckily i found a diamond, a great seller who vouched for its provenance, work was worth it as i have a n+1 which i can easily get 10 years out of, thats a ROI! Super happy

I also think it's worth shopping around for older parts for bikes. I just bought a 3T carbon seat post and handlebars brand new for under £100. No harm in having components that are a few years old if they're brand new and will perform just as well as most new versions.

    Some great bargains!
I wouldn’t be so picky about consumable parts like chain, pads, bar tape or tyres, they are cheap enough to replace.
The integrity of the frame and fork would be the primary concern for me…

I’m a bit jealous of your choice of bikes over there, not to mention the fact that everything is near you. Here in the midwestern United States if you do find something other than a Trek or Specialized, it’s usually 1500 miles away!

I got myself a 2017 immaculate Carbon Boardman Road Team for £375. It's mint! I often get asked mates new to cycling to find them a decent bike "for about £300-£500". Things like Caad 8s, Giant Defys and Boardman's are always good intro bikes for usually that kind of Cash.

I guess the other option is to upgrade parts if the bike isn’t quite right? Which is what I did with my reasonably early gravel bike, since cable disks just didn’t cut it for me, so upgraded to hydraulic and recently tubeless wheel-set though that’s quite early days!

Over here in California but just want to add that in buying a used bike ask up front what the bike ID number is, there are several databases where you can check to see if it's stolen.

First thanks for your videos in general, and note that i m happily see you coming down on earth, of course not may viewers plan to buy 4000euros + bikes and your latest videos on affordable bike and this one about second hand bike are welcome. Here are a few remakrs and questions :
First do you still use the gravel suspension fork (was it the Judy?), i m asking since i may pick a commuter/gravel bike with such a fork, Canyon sell one got a very affordable price.
Second about second hand : well if you want a bike with rim brakes and narrow clearance it is quite easy to find. But i have been looking for 30+ mm tyre clearance bike with hydraulic disk brakes and they hard to find. I ended getting a carbon giant anyroad (more a cyclo-cross than a gravel) but i had to change the front brake i first though i was in trouble since shimano raod diskc brakes are flatmount all of them but the cyclocross caliper that i comment with my 105 shifter. Note that i m on the riviera so the second hand market is quite smaller than in your area. The main issue with second hand is that most people are shifting toward 30mm clerance + disc brakes. Bike such my old willier (which maxed out at 25) with neither disc brakes nor mouting point are plenty and they sell very cheap.
But if you are looking for a modern endurance/race/gravel bike then second hand bike are sold almost immedialty.
    cheers.

David, Why did you skip over the Planet X, Ribble and not even mention the Boardman is it some kind of bike elitism (Dislike of British brands) or have you had a bad experience with those brands ? I'm pretty sure a lot of people start off with these as Trek, Cannondale, Scott etc.. are way out of there price range .. Just curious

Cool video. My internet/eBay/market place searches never seem to hit so many nice bikes. The Black Wilier is worth > $1k just for the wheels and tires! Too bad I’m in the US . If that were in a shop I bet they would want $2500. ( I am a huge fan of Hunt, I haven’t found anything better just more expensive.)

bought both my current bikes off ebay:
2021 near new Trek Emonda SL6 Pro with upgraded Aeolus Carbon wheels - £3k
2014 Boardman CXR 9.4 full carbon with Ultegra Di2, disc brakes and tyre clearance up to 40mm - £1k
total outlay £4k for main road bike plus winter/Gravel 2nd bike both full carbon and Ultegra build. delighted with both of them!
Some great bargains to be had, just needs some care and attention in the buying process.

Should you buy a second hand carbon bike? A scott addict 10 2018 is available for sale. Looks fine to me. However, I think the frame warranty lasts for just 5 years on that bike. It’s already 5 years. Can I buy the bike? Has the carbon lost it’s properties? Like stiffness and all?
