I have what I believe is a pot perm system in my house, there is a small greyish basin beside a tall black fibreglass canister. Do I have to add something to this basin? Pot perm perhaps? if so, how much? HELP PLEASE
In had high iron in my water and it ended up messing up my softener. So then I purchased an Iron Breaker to put upstream of my softener and that solved my water issues completely. It has been about fournyears since then and the water is still great. The Iron Breaker was a great investment l
Your videos are GREAT! They have helped me to understand how my air over media iron filter works and to trouble shoot when I have a problem. Thank you!
By education, I’m a chemical engineer and have worked for a decade for a local water district, insuring high standards of water quality. I bought a home outside of the district, and rely on well water. Unfortunately, the well water had a very high Iron content at over 40 ppm. It’s a volcanic area, so sulfides also were present. The water out of the well was not potable, horrible smell and color. The sellers had spent a small fortune on treatment, using a series of 1 to 5 micron filters, water softener and charcoal filter cartridges. Still, the water in the home was of poor quality. They eventually gave up, and relied on bottled water among with a large storage tank filled once a month bu truck. The solution was a simple one, and I recommend this to any reader dealing with iron, bacteria and other contaminates. There are just a few, easy steps. The total cost, with DIY installation is under $1100. A vast savings compared to products on the market that advertise similar results for whole house filtration. Here are the steps. I’ll add that I used 1” Pex tubing along with SharkBite fittings. No special tools needed and they provide leak proof couplings. No soldering, no glues. 1). The first filter should be a 5 micron, 10” x4” sediment filter, ahead of everything else. I mounted mine on the exterior of my home where the water comes in from well. 2) On the inside of garage, I started with. Chlorine injection system. They vary in price, mine was $650. That included a 30 gallon chorine tank, injection pump, mixer pipe, flow sensor and all fittings. It’s important to mount the primary 5 micron filter ahead of the flow sensor, since sediment can cause the flow sensor to stick in the open circuit condition. Instead of using gallons of bleach in the tank, I use concentrated pellets designed for well sanitation. 4 cups of the pellets and clean tap water does the trick to achieve a 5% chlorine content in the tank. 3). 6’ from the chlorine mixer fitting comes the first 20” 5 micron filter. The filter is adequate to filter the fine sediment, the larger oxidized iron matter and most solid contaminates. 4) Next in line is a 20” , 1 micron filter. This will trap a high percentage, if not all of the oxidized iron. Chlorine oxidizes iron, effectively and also kills bacteria. Both are filtered once through the 1 micron filter. 5). I called a couple of water treatment outfits and located a large, used whole house filter housing. It previously was used to soften water. It was full of a media that could be emptied, then the inside of the cylinder cleaned with flushing. The cylinder had a fitting on top that could be unscrewed, and had 1” female ports for water in, water out. I purchased a 50 lb bag of Activated Carbon, filled the cylinder and proceeded to install it inline with the system. The Activated Carbon will remove any chlorine in the water. 6) The final filter I installed is a 10” x 6” Carbon filter. This was an optional step, for best measure. It’s designed to be the final step in capturing any and all chorine, any other potential contaminates. The end result, I have almost pure water as per my own testing and that of 2 independent labs. The water is on the soft side, so I have no use for a softener. I’d recommend only adding a softener system only if needed, after the prior steps are followed and your water is tested. I buy the filters from Amazon, rarely do any of them exceed $20. I change all of mine once every 2 months. The Activated Carbon will last no less than a year and most likely 2. All tallied, my total installed price was $950. Depending on the chlorination system you choose, you may spend a few hundred more. Mine is a very basic injection system, off of Amazon for $650. The filter cartridge assemblies average around $50 apiece. It took me 5 hours to completely install. For kicks and giggles, the least expensive whole house Reverse Osmosis system I priced was $7500, which had a water quality yield equal to my end result.
I don't want to add chlorine to my drinking water. Also, I change my iron/sediment filter (next in line after the well pump every 6 days. There is no way I could use a larger filter and expect to replace it only every 2 months. My water is hard: 1100 ppm. Help!
@@JoelDubaythe carbon neutralizes the chlorine…. But if you want to go another route that has the same affect as the chlorine, but less harsh - you can do a hydrogen peroxide injection to oxidize the iron in the water.
Great videos Gary. You are a wealth of information. I run a, water treatment company in South Africa. If ever I am in doubt I look for your expertise. Thank you.
I'm about to cut my well pipe and dump all kinds of shyt down there..so tired of it ruining new fence and scrubbing fence down..And of course the smell is fantastic. I'm ready to fix this problema. Thx!
Great video the part about water being clear when I put it in my bucket and then murky after a few hours had me wondering what it was and you helped me understand that thanks for this 👍
Gary, I think Im a little more enthusiastic about use of whole house filters for effective iron removal than you. Ive had terrific success with ferric iron removal using a big blue 4.5X20 5 micron string wound filter (looks like you've got a melt blown cartridge there) at the point of entry on my system. With just this filter on-line (everything else in bypass), the water goes from a brownish tint to absolutely crystal clear. I originally installed it to protect the rest of the system from sediment, but was pleasantly surprised when it also stripped away all the ferric iron. My understanding is that these types of filters are not effective against ferrous iron, however, since there is no particulate. Im getting about 10,000 to 15,000 gallons of service out of these cartridges before they load up to the point where replacement is necessary from loss of water pressure. For me thats about two months. There appears to never be an issue with blow though, which I periodically test for. I dont appear to have much if any ferrous iron. Im relying on my calcite neutralizer and iron pro softener to handle that job to the extent necessary. It all seems to work very well. I really enjoy your videos, they are very well done.
Thank you for your comment. I am glad this is working for you and it give families another option. I have never had any luck using this type of filter for iron.
In any case, a sediment filter is a great thing to use upstream from an iron filter. I live in Central Kentucky, and we have well water in our iron. Plus, I have a creek out back, and I don't have the time, money or inclination to dig a deep well. Any iron that your sediment filter stops is iron that you don't have to remove with your water softener.
Hello, we have a sandpoint well for a lake cabin in Minnesota acquired a few years ago. At the time Culligan had rental ‘tanks’ for softener (not a complete system) which they would change out about once a month or such. They quit doing such and now we have another rental but it is a normal system with a salt/brine container and the resin tank and the old style of regeneration control on a timer. Anyway the water from hot water has had a light smell but it is there even why when we acquired the property. Now with the new system at the beginning of this year with the new water softener, the cold water seemed good, however hot water still had that smell. We did have the Stainless Steel HTP Everlast hot water tank sanitized with chlorine from our local plumber service which really didn’t help in the end. This water tank is Stainless and has no anode rod to deal with for replacement. Now that I am also smelling and I taste something for the cold tap water I am back to thinking of something from the well water side is causing the problem. The new water softener has eliminated any Iron Stain’s in the toilets, which we did get when the Culligan Resin Tanks would be getting depleted. So we do know there is large concentrations of Iron in the water. However, with the smell and now taste of the water with a new water softener. What is the best method of filtering the bad water minerals etc with our current setup? We have our the water softener company coming back this week and I am trying to educated myself with options to get good tasting water and no smell when taking a shower. Thanks you for any input!!
The only difference between hot and cold water is the hot water heater, so the smell comes from there. I would have them do a sulfur test on the cold water. Sulfur will always be worse from the hot water than the cold. We have iron and sulfur filters here waterestore.com/search?q=hum%20foc%20sulphur%20filter
I’m on my second water treatment system in 15 years. First was salt only. Latest one has 3 filters plus salt. But I am still getting iron stains. Still see shiny layer in toilet water. I haven’t washed my hair at home for 2 years ..the water totally ruined it. The back of the toilet was stained orange. I poured Iron Out in. Now the water is completely black. I’m so frustrated bc I don’t really understand any of this. This was probably the best video to explain it all …I’m just in over my head. Ready to move. I would really just like a shower head that filters iron so I could at least wash my hair at home.
Sorry to hear. I would have your water straight from the well tested by a lab so you know exactly what is in it. From there we can proceed to make a recommendation.
I have a pre-filter sediment filter on my water system. It fills with tiny black granules that are magnetic. When I put a magnet in it they’re all attracted it’s like shavings iron shavings. My first filter that was clear and white is now rust colored. After only six months of use. I say I have a severe iron issue and I’m using lots of filters. I was having problems with the black granules blocking up all the screens at each faucet. As long as I enter empty my pre-filter once a week that’s not the case. But now I’m having white crystals at the filters.
I would have your water tested to see how much iron you have in your water and get an air over media iron filter like this one if excessive waterestore.ca/products/hum-fob-chemical-free-iron-filter
Iron in our well is terrible. We have a Zen water filter drinking system so we are fine there. What we need is something to get that stain out. It’s pieces when we use our outdoor hoses. Pieces of iron I assume? Indoors we have a water softener but it just broke so trying to figure out what to do. I know we need a very good filter and we have that clear plastic filter holder that’s wide for big filters.
I have a very basic 1/2 cu. ft. iron filter using Birm media and an aeration tank ahead of it. A tiny compressor keeps that tank about 1/3 full of air; the incoming water is sprayed into the tank and falls to the water surface. Aerated water is then drawn off and sent to the iron filter. Believe it or not, my Birm is eight years old and still doing its job. Our iron is around 6ppm. I'm just about to upgrade to a newer, bigger system because we have two homes to supply now. And of course that Birm must be reaching the end of its life. But I have no complaints. For an initial outlay of around $1,500 I've had beautiful water for years.
Hey gary... im in stalling a aquasure harmony 48000 water softner. 55 gpg hard, iron 0.7ppm, PH 7.0 and TDS 612 PPM. What should my settings be? Thanks
Awesome videos you do, wish I would have seen these before I purchased an iron filter. It does seem to be working, but I like the way you explain how to check with a white cup. I might take up your offer and send off some samples, before and after system.
Good luck...mine lasted maybe 6 months and Culligan charges $175 just for the service call. 10yr warranty that guarantees they have a job....worst, most expensive crap I've ever bought. 😢😢😢😢 I'm looking to get away from all this. There's magnetic products out there now that is supposed to eliminate this extreme cost for clean water. Best of luck on your iron cleer system!
Hi Gary, stumbled across your videos a few months ago but still trying to understand what I need. I had a new water softener installed last year and removed the anode rod from our older water heater. That seemed to the do the trick for the sulphur smell, but we still get discoloration in the toilet, usually after a day or two. This leads me to believe it’s oxidizing the iron. What I can’t find is if my tannin levels are causing the issue .21ppm or my iron 2.8ppm? I also have TDS of 370ppm I’m leaning towards the iron filter but wanted to see your thoughts on a tannin filter as well. Thanks for your detailed videos!! I’ve learned so much from you
Actaully both are causing the color. You might appreciate the content in this video and the test shown but I think you will relaize that you need both. th-cam.com/video/YbCU5pOkhlw/w-d-xo.html
@@water_estore thanks for response!! That makes sense. In looking at the whole house filter for a family of 4, I noticed the tannins filter has a salt tank. Do I need a salt tank for each filter? Theoretically, I would have three salt tanks 1 For the water softener, 1 for the tannin filter and 1 for the iron filter? Is that excessive or needed?
Actually, it looks like the iron filters you sell don’t need salt tanks?! Good to know @gary the water guy - for a family of 4, should we plan for a 2.0 cub or 1.0 cub? Thanks again!
Hy Gary, amazing videos!! I'm doing a complete cleaning and rebuild of my system ,including emptying of brine tanks . I have 3 clack ws1 consisting of iron filter, tannin and softener (brine tanks for softener and tannin) my question is, when I'm ready to put everything into service, do I need to add water in the brine tanks or does the system do it all on it's own? Thanks in advance. Tony
Great video Gary, lot's of useful information. Why not stop the cause in the well pipe, before it reaches the house and all those filters..? Couldn't i just drop a bottle of Iron Out in my pipe.? 👍💚
The problem is that you are pumping water from ground that is rich in iron ore. You're living on the perfect land to open an iron mine. You cannot neutralize the literal tons of iron in the ground around your well.
Hi. My husband passed away unexpectedly last year. We have an iron eater as on your video I know nothing about it. The main screen went out recently and I was wondering if there is a manual way to flush the system or backwash, whatever needs to b done to system. Or can I just replace the front plate of system? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
Hi Gary, I have a 20 year old Waterboss greensand potassium permanganate iron filter that I'm considering replacing before it quits on me. It has done a good job and been reliable. Would you suggest staying with the same unit or is there a better choice?
Great question! You are far better going to an air over media system which does not require the Potassium Permanganate as it just uses air to oxidize the iron and sulphur out of your water. Like this one waterestore.com/products/hum-fob-chemical-free-iron-filter and this video explaions how they work th-cam.com/video/CN_n0Qz-z3k/w-d-xo.html
My Air Iron Curtain works fairly well. However the valve body and top of the tank constantly blocks up with iron sediment. You basically have to disassemble and clean out the whole valve body once a year to maintain adequate water pressure.
If I have understood your explanation it sounds as though the big blue would work for me and here is the test report, hardness 11,chlorine 0,iron .5,sulphur 0,TDS 271,ph9 I also get mineral buildup on faucets over time ,water tastes great and no smell please advise me , thank you PS only 1 person in house sometimes 2 and gone 3-4 months per year
The iron filter cartridge will remove the iron but not the hardness (mineral deposits) You would be better off with a water softener as it would remove the iron and soften the water.
I had a water softener installed less than two weeks ago. I have had 2 floods in basement since. The contractor said that a quick fix will be to add a sump pump to drain water out of the house. That will cost me for pump plus labor. Is there a better way? He installed close to wall where water comes into the house. Old water softener, installed by Culligan, was next to water heater. I disconnected it due to I heard water running through a pipe so I shut valves. I got a 300.00 plus water bill that month as opposed to around $30. a month.
I had my old water softener replaced and added an iron breaker at the same time. Both units are made by Clack. After the install I started noticing air in my water lines at every faucet, hot and cold. I put the iron breaker into bypass and a few days later the air is gone. I have called the company that installed the equipment but have not heard back from them yet. Any ideas why the iron breaker is causing the air in my lines? I enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them, thanks.
Gary, what all do you test for and how much do you charge? Also, how do I get a raw water sample from my well? Take my filter out for a min, let the canister fill up some and grab that water out?
Hello, first, I have an official lab sample in progress. However, while I'm waiting, I'm very sure my main problem with my new well is going to be iron. The builder did install a cheap 2.5" sediment filter which was clogged up pretty quick. However, on bypass, there's really no change in the water appearance. It is slightly brown when first coming out, but when sitting in a toilet for example, it gets a little darker. Also, it smells like rust. It's not SUPER bad, and there's no sulfur odor. I have AquaDur test strips for hardness and they're indicating very soft to soft water on their scale. I don't have any issues with getting soapy in the shower, for example. I'm assuming, after official results come back, I'm likely going to need to address iron. If I'm looking for something for iron without a bunch of other fancy things, what would you recommend I start looking at?
Depending on the result, you will need one of these th-cam.com/video/af1iVOC-Hyk/w-d-xo.html we have them here waterestore.ca/search?type=product&q=fob*
Dr. Gundry who has 2 practices in California and posts to TH-cam says iron ages humans. So definitely don’t take it as a supplement. I say if you have iron in your well water, it would serve you well to install one of these systems. My folks have had an air over media iron-sulfur filter for about 38 years to treat the slimy iron. It has improved their quality of life immeasurably. But they do not back flush it every 3 days. Maybe every 2 weeks before they run their water softener.
Gary, i’ve watched so many of your videos that I’ve lost track after 20. I just bought a house that has a water softener and it is on well water. I have not done a water test yet. The water comes out crystal clear and tastes fine from the softener , however there is a slight odor from the water. I have followed all your videos on cleaning the media but the smell is still there.. What do you think this is? Is it magnesium? Iron? Love your channel.
Water guy I'm the only one in my house so how do I remove the iron in my pipe's which I have pec tubing. Ive been using Iron Out. Thank you for videos.
Our softener can normally handle our level of iron, but during high water usage in the summer when the well gets low our water turns orange. Would a basic 10 inch 30 micron sediment filter help with this or should we consider a 20 inch 1 micron? (or even a carbon filter?) Or is this a well issue since the softener is usually sufficient during normal water usage? Thanks in advance!
I have a ws 50cc softener and I'm getting lots of iron and white laundry gets the orange stains. Im going to use a new salt with rust prevention and rust out which ill throw into the softener to give it a clean. What can i do for the eggy smell or will above handle that to? Is there any other recommendations
You need and iron and sulphur filter. I suggest you have your water tested first, then forward us the info for a recommendation. See waterestore.com/pages/free-water-test-evaluation-the-water-estore
Very effective. BUT the long term affect on your septic system and cost for the Pot Perm is the issue. I would avoid them like the plague! 40 year old technology.
Had a water guy come out and say my iron was at a 10 ppm and my kinetico 2100s was shit then quoted me 5k to do a whole new softner system with an iron filter. Thoughts? Water was good for a couple months then a drastic change to clear but strong iron smell that oranges with time out of the pipes.
The Kinetico 2100 is a water softener, 10 ppm of iron is too much iron for a water softener to handle. You need an iron filter before the water softener like this waterestore.com/products/hum-chemical-free-iron-sulphur-manganese-filter-fok-1-0-cube
I’m going to replace an old system with a new one to remove iron. My current tank sits some 4’ down in my well house. And ideas as to how I can get the tank removed as it is very heavy? Maybe I can somehow empty it before lifting it out? Thanks in advance for any ideas.
Great question, it will be very difficult. Cut off the tank as close to the bottom that you can and then pull out the riser tube. A shopvac might work so get some of the media out, otherwise you will need to either scoop it out or flush it out with water.
Thanks for the info, how do I test to know how much iron and sulfur my water has? Bought a house with a well and I know I have sulfur and see rust stains in shower and tub drains. The house already has a water softener but not sure how old it is or if it also removes iron? I do know I can only use natural softener salt per the manual no additives with the salt I buy. I also know we go through a lot of salt. Looking at these videos I rather maybe install a whole new complete systems. I am a DYI and have done plumbing myself but not sure best route to go? Any suggestions? Thank You
Yes, we'd be happy to help. You can follow the suggestions in this video th-cam.com/video/9VNc4v10YVY/w-d-xo.html and if you want us to test your water and or make recommendations, go here. waterestore.com/pages/free-water-test-evaluation-the-water-estore
I assume you are referring to the Easy Water No Salt Conditioner? If so they don't soften your water if that is what you are looking to do you need a water softener like this waterestore.ca/products/hum-deluxe-water-softener-30-000-grain
Hi there, just had a new well put in. i tried multiple solutions in the past but failed. I have water hardness of 25, iron of 5, TDS 445, ph 7.2 can you recommend what I should install for iron removal, softener etc. there may be some tannin also but should be minimal. Any advice you can give is much appreciated.
Depending on the amount of people in your home, and the flow rate from your well pump, this would be a great water softener waterestore.ca/products/hum-metered-water-softener-45-000-grain-capacity?_pos=51&_sid=419ab3855&_ss=r and this iron filter waterestore.ca/products/hum-chemical-free-iron-sulphur-manganese-filter-fok-1-0-cube?_pos=77&_sid=419ab3855&_ss=r
I have a Pro Well E-1 residential system that filters water then to a commercial grade Everpure system with carbon filters. I’m at a well that is high in iron and manganese. The water has a metallic aftertaste. I was wondering if the Pro Well and carbon filters are causing the aftertaste problem.
Great video, you explained it very well, made something I couldn't understand simple with all the information I need. Thank you I'm now an expert after 12mins 🤣
Hello I have well water. It stains my white toilet. I ran a bath today and it was a yellowish/brown color. And sometimes smells like sulfur. I don't trust the water so I only use it for bathing. But I was wondering what is the best well water test that test for everything including bacteria. I'm concerned bc I'm not sure where my well water comes from. I know nothing about wells. But I also want to find a filtration system. I'm not sure if I should get one for the entire well or just the kitchen faucet. Im really overwhelmed with all this. Do you have a phone # or email?
Can you help me test my water and tell me what I need .my well water is crystal clear but the iron in my well stops my plants from growing. I can't grow with it .can you please help me out..and tell me what ineed
Hi Gary, I was going to use an old Reefing system to filter water for fridge ice maker. GE filters are Expensive, so it has sediment - carbon- DI resin then membrane. I was told by a water expert that the DI Resin would ruin the fridge and sold me an aqua pure in Lin water filtration filter, what is your opinion.
I always recommend reverse osmosis systems like this for a fridge. waterestore.com/products/hum-water-saver-75-gpd-reverse-osmosis-system-brushed-nickel-faucet
Hi Gary I have iron in my irrigation well what's the best way to get rid of it so it dosen't turn everything brown. I have a rid of rust system now but it dosen't do much to help. My iron is 3 and my ph is 5.
Great question, but due to the high iron, high flow and capacity of your irrigation system and low pH this is not something I can help you with. I would check with a local irrigation expert.
Hi Gary, We built a new house nearly 3 years ago. We have a water softening tank and another taller one. We also have well water on the property. But water in the toilets normally turns brown even though we use them and at times, a funny, gross smell floats around the house as well. We know that we have iron as it's a long time problem but do you have any suggestions?
I have an Issue I hope u can help with. I have a 50gal drum I've been filling with water from rain water collected but mostly well water as rain is hard to get during the summer. The well water has higher levels of iron ferris and I'm looking for a way to remove the iron to make it safe for my plants as I don't want to lose everything with only a month or so left in the season. Thanks You any help is Greatly Appreciated and the 50gal drum Doesn't have a filtration system and is basically just sitting there with a line coming out that a solar pump powers and sends the water to the different areas, to give you an idea of what's going on. Also there's Only well water as the house is quite far away from any city
Hi Gary Thanks for the great videos. I am really interested in your thoughts on iron removal. I am considering 3 options for my well with 10 ppm iron ,.5 manganese and pH between 6.3-6.5. Currently have manganese dioxide media with a chlorine draw tank for sterilizing, and significant iron breakthrough (3 ppm +). What do you think about hydrogen peroxide injection, catalytic carbon backwashing filter, and then upflow calcium carbonate tank to raise pH? My other thought was again h2o2 with a manganese dioxide media with calcium carbonate mix and air injection. My final system for consideration is another backwashing system utilizing katalox media. What would you recommend?Family of 4. Well produces plenty of water under normal conditions.
With 10 ppm of iron chemical injection is the way to go, not Katalox. I do not have experience with chemical injection so i really cannot help you with any specific suggestions.
On the air over media type you described, you mention the system backwashing. Does that backwashing (I'm assuming that means to reverse the direction of water flow, to clean out the media...but not sure) go directly into the waste drain to sewer (or in our case septic system)?
Hi Garry, I just move in into a house with a water system wwith backwash and using air for the sulfur oxidation…I think it is the system you mentioned…however, two of the water treatment and plumber I called couldn’t figure out wwhat my system is…my water is smelling very bad especially the hot water side…do i need to change anything?
Hi Gary. Great video. We have a home well with hard water (332 ppm), pH (7.4), Total Iron (1ppm), IRB (2200 cfu/mL), Sulfate (42ppm) and high sedimentation with conductivity of 707 uS/cm. Our goal is to remove sedimentation, soften water and remove the orange(ish) fixture staining presumably caused by a combination of Iron and IRB. One company in town is recommending a chlorination system with only a 7.5 gal tank followed by a green sand back wash filter followed by a softener followed by a big blue filter (possibly a carbon filter?). We don't love the idea of using chlorine. Can you comment on their approach or provide other recommendations to achieve our goals? Thanks!
BTW. I"m not convinced that the IRB is a major problem, because there isn't any 'slime' in, for example, toilet fixtures. So I guess another way to ask the question, is it reasonable to use a backwash filter for the heavy sediment and ferric iron in combination with a water softener for the hardness and ferrous iron? Thanks.
If you are not getting any slime, you definitly can, deending on the size of your family, use this combination backwashing and iron filter waterestore.com/products/hum-chemical-free-iron-sulphur-manganese-filter-fok-1-0-cube and this water softener
Hello! I would love for you to test our softened well water! Any sort of information would be wonderful to get our water healthier! What address do I send it to and how much do you need in the sample?
I live in Canada and in a rural area. We don't have animals close by and its a dug well approx 15ft. We dont run out of water very often as we use it wisely. I do have a water softener and keep making sure that it is topped up and make sure the medium does not bridge. My problem is that after I boil the kettle there is a white sediment in the kettle. It used to be once in a while i would use vinegar and clean it and it would last for a while but lately its almost every other week. I dont know what the sediment is so dont know how to treat it. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you in advance
What are some solutions for treating well water with rotten egg smell? It’s definitely coming from well as I tested at the test tap by the incoming water. Both iron and manganese present. Morton 34,000 grain water softener does a good job removing the iron, 1 person occupied 2 story home with 2 bathrooms. Well is only set 80 feet down. 55 gallon water pressure tank. I ran the outside hose for an hour to flush the system. It seems to clear up. 2 weeks later the smell is back. I’ve lived here for 1 year. And for probably 6 months I didn’t have any issues. No change mechanically. Thought maybe the water is becoming stagnant since I’m only one person and not using much water. I recently purchased 2- 10” whole house water filters ( U30-S-S18 ) one sediment and one carbon but I’m hesitant to try it.
You need a sulphur filter like one of these waterestore.ca/products/hum-foc-sulphur-water-filter-one-cubic-foot this video will give you more info th-cam.com/video/1PZj66jf4Ek/w-d-xo.html
Gary, I don’t have hard water, but I have clear water iron and possibly iron bacteria. Would you recommend both an iron breaker and water softener or just the iron breaker?
Neither, if you have iron bacteria you need a chemical injection system. If it is clear water iron, this will work waterestore.com/products/hum-fob-chemical-free-iron-filter
Probably not, I doubt that they would even softener your water. You would need an actual water softener like this waterestore.com/products/hum-deluxe-water-softener-30-000-grain or an iron filter like this waterestore.com/products/hum-fob-chemical-free-iron-filter
We have a well in 5 acres that has 12 gom pump. We have a Massive amount of iron -15 ppm and manganese is high as well. The softener went out and we're looking to replace the system. Any advice??

Hello my water treatment for drinking water contains carbon and sand filters then precision filter(1micron) filter and then RO then ozone generating machine then ozone mixing tank then UV then tanks all the pipes and are SS304. After RO we add mineral water to get TDS 100 to get good taste. The water after RO mixed with ordinary water has no color once ozonated the water is getting yellow color how can I solve this problem?!any idea?!
Thanks for the informative video. I understand why the backwash occurs so as to clean the media, but during the backwash if it is using unfiltered well water for the backwash, I wonder how the media gets cleaned. Thank you for your help.
The media is backwashed out with the unfiltered water but remember it is backwashing all of the stuff it has been filtered out of the water not the dirty water itself.
Hey Gary, what is the address where i can send you a water sample, i live in West Virginia, the water straight from the well is already red/rust look, no smell but when i bought a test for iron did not show any.
We had an air injector, installed before the pressure tank, to remove iron about 10 years ago. Recently, after changing the big blue filter, our taps and commodes started sputtering and complaining. We had a plumber visit who pointed to our air injector as the culprit. Haven't heard from him since. Are air injectors obsolete?
No, they are now part of the Iron/Sulphur/Manganese filter and are not installed before the pressure tank. waterestore.ca/search?type=product&q=hum*%20fob*

Hi I have one question I have Well in my house connect to the sprinklers System only and it keeps caused discoloration to the concrete it’s like dark brown what I should use to clean the concrete
Really depends on how bad your water is and how much water you use. With slime in your water you will need a chlorine injection system which will add to the cost.
I have a major ferric iron problem in my well water. I installed three Big Blue filters; two sediment and one carbon block. The system also has a pre-filter to catch particles. The problem is, the pre-filter gets so clogged up that I lose 90% of my water flow/pressure. I have to flush it out several times a day, and even have to shut off the water supply, remove, and clean the pre filter EVERY DAY! When I checked the Big Blue sediment filters, immediately downstream of the pre-filter, the first one was pretty well clogged, but the second one was clean! What should I do? Should I take the filter screen out of the pre-filter? Please help!
Does this system remove manganese? Water test failed as manganese level came back 98 and should not be above 50? How can I get rid of the manganese ? Thanks

Hi Gary, great video. I bought a home and it came with a water filter with air intake, similar to yours, and prior owner wrote on control SulferMax, 6 hardness, 7.5ph, 0.1 iron, sulphur 0.4 amd TDS 250. As I like to do my own maintenance (rebed) like my prior house, I’ve removed the head and saw slim on the cone filter which i would guess is iron bacteria (as you mentioned in the video). Having a 10”x54” tank, what type and quantity of media would i need? forgot to mention, currently water is not clear (as bottked water), a bit colourish and taste bad and smells a bit.

In had high iron in my water and it ended up messing up my softener. So then I purchased an Iron Breaker to put upstream of my softener and that solved my water issues completely. It has been about fournyears since then and the water is still great. The Iron Breaker was a great investment l
Yes, it is far better to have an iron filetr to handle the iron before your water goes into your water softener.
I absolutely know nothing about well these videos are very helpful
Your videos are GREAT! They have helped me to understand how my air over media iron filter works and to trouble shoot when I have a problem. Thank you!
You're very welcome. Thanks for watching! Please share video with friends and family.
Yes, chlorine injection will deal with the iron, sulphur and bacteria. Sounds like a great DIY project.
I don't want to add chlorine to my drinking water.
Also, I change my iron/sediment filter (next in line after the well pump every 6 days.
There is no way I could use a larger filter and expect to replace it only every 2 months.
My water is hard: 1100 ppm.
Help!
Hello, can I give you my email address to communicate with you further? Thnx
@@JoelDubaythe carbon neutralizes the chlorine….
But if you want to go another route that has the same affect as the chlorine, but less harsh - you can do a hydrogen peroxide injection to oxidize the iron in the water.

I would have your water tested for iron content and ahrdness so you know what you are dealing with.
@@water_estore yes I know and thanks. I’m just frustrated because this water softener went out too soon. So much China stuff today.
This system also uses Birm and doesn't need the compressor waterestore.com/products/clack-fob-iron-water-filter-1-5-cubic-foot

I also have TDS of 370ppm
I’m leaning towards the iron filter but wanted to see your thoughts on a tannin filter as well.

Good to know

My Air Iron Curtain works fairly well. However the valve body and top of the tank constantly blocks up with iron sediment. You basically have to disassemble and clean out the whole valve body once a year to maintain adequate water pressure.
Yes, but with the Clack valve it is a fairly easy and inexpensive cleaning process.
Give this guy a flashlight and a wall. I bet he could do a heck of a hand puppet show.
Nah, that's for kids.
I got a 300.00 plus water bill that month as opposed to around $30. a month.
Sorry to hear. What caused the floods? Where does the water softener drain into? Did the water softener casue the floods?
You're the man!! So grateful for you!!

I had my old water softener replaced and added an iron breaker at the same time. Both units are made by Clack. After the install I started noticing air in my water lines at every faucet, hot and cold. I put the iron breaker into bypass and a few days later the air is gone. We offer free testing, see here waterestore.com/pages/free-water-test-evaluation-the-water-estore
Whatever works, but if you have modern media in ther iron filter it needs to be backwashed every 3 days to make that media last.
Run some water from the base of the pressure tank, before the softener, does it have the same smell? What does it semll like?
You're the best Gary👍

Water guy I'm the only one in my house so how do I remove the iron in my pipe's which I have pec tubing. Ive been using Iron Out. Thank you for videos.
If you get a water softener or iron filter it will clean your pipes and keep them clean.
Can you pour the chemicals down the well
You sure can, but that chlorine will oxidize out the iron and clog everything down stream.
Could be a few things, is your water softeenr metered? If not you may need to adjust it to regenerate more often.
@@water_estore Hi! Yes it is metered and we have adjusted the hardness setting to account for the iron levels, as per the manual.

Just a question about how effective a pot perm green sand filter would be or your thoughts on it.
Very effective. BUT the long term affect on your septic system and cost for the Pot Perm is the issue. I would avoid them like the plague! 40 year old technology.
Is it problematic due to the oxidizing effect on anaerobic bacteria or high level of backwash causing dilution?
Thank You

Do you have an opinion or familiarity with the Easy Water System?
When you added the bleach you opened the inlet valve. My bypass valve operates both the inlet and outlet valve at the same time, is that ok?
Yes, it is.
I have a Pro Well E-1 residential system that filters water then to a commercial grade Everpure system with carbon filters. I’m at a well that is high in iron and manganese. The water has a metallic aftertaste. I was wondering if the Pro Well and carbon filters are causing the aftertaste problem.
I would have the water tested so you know exactly what you are dealing with.
Great video, you explained it very well, made something I couldn't understand simple with all the information I need. Thank you I'm now an expert after 12mins 🤣
Perfect! Please share video with friends and family so they can become an expert in 12 minutes too!

Hi Gary,
We built a new house nearly 3 years ago. We have a water softening tank and another taller one. We also have well water on the property. But water in the toilets normally turns brown even though we use them and at times, a funny, gross smell floats around the house as well. We know that we have iron as it's a long time problem but do you have any suggestions?
Have the raw water tested to know what exactly is in your water and then email the results to us for a recommendation info@waterestore.com
Is there a way to correct the iron coming from our sprinkler system? It stains my house, fence and landscaping stones.

Sorry, other than what was said in the video I really don't know.
Hi Gary
Thanks for the great videos.
Yes it does.
Sorry to hear. Have you tried the fix from this video yet? Works on sulphur too.

I would have your waters hardness and Total Dissolved Solides (TDS) tested before and after the water softener.
I have a question. My husband bought a Vulcan 3000 and we're wondering if it would be sufficient to clean our water for 0.5 iron whole house? Thanks.
Any advice??

water softners use sat and my hubby has high blood pressure and heart doctor said no . I am not changing those filters . I want one that flushs it's self . Evolve said ph was 6 and I have iron . My koi pond is from 2004 and I have never lost one koi and they are over 4 feet long . So I know about water tests
Why not get an iron filter that uses no salt like this one waterestore.com/search?type=product&q=fok*%20chemical*
Hi Gary , We have both types of Iron and Iron Bacteria :( What would you recommend ?
You need a chlorine injection system for iron bacteria.
Hi Gary, do you need the chlorine injection as well as the iron media filter?
Can I adapt a sand filter off my above ground pool to a well ?
I don’t think so, I sure don’t know how

If you use the green bag softener salt(iron remover) do you also need the Res Care?
No, it already has a cleaner like Res Care in it.

We just had our whole house iron filter serviced due to discoloured water and they noticed mud inside.. said the pump could be sitting in mud? Checking it out next week, Does this happen? Could it be something else?
That is very good advice, yes, it does happen.
Hi Gary,
Should a family of 4 use a 2.0 cub iron filter? Or would 1.0 work? We have guests over quite often so water usage is pretty high during summer months. I’m leaning towards 2.0 but don’t want to go overboard if I don’t need to
This 1.0 is big enough waterestore.ca/products/hum-fob-chemical-free-iron-filter
The ozone is oxidizing something, likley ferrous iron out of the "ordinary water"

@@water_estore We have a clack pvc air injector before the pressure tank. our softer is an Iron Gaurd that also has an air injector. Double whammy. Installer didn't install an air vent. I've called 4 plumbers - one visited and took down my system particulars, one said he'd get back to me. There seems to be no appetite in my area (rural Ottawa) to address my issue. I even contacted on thru BBB. It is not critical for the time being. Do you have any affiliates in my area?
Hi I have one question I have Well in my house connect to the sprinklers System only and it keeps caused discoloration to the concrete it’s like dark brown what I should use to clean the concrete
I was quoted 8k for a system for well with iron. I have seen the slime so I know I probably need the best one, but that still seems high??
The first step is to have your water tested to see exactly how much iron, manganese and hardness you have in your water.
Does this system remove manganese? Water test failed as manganese level came back 98 and should not be above 50?
How can I get rid of the manganese ? Thanks
If you pH is above 8.0 the FOK will remove the manganese as well as any sulphur or iron. waterestore.com/products/hum-chemical-free-iron-sulphur-manganese-filter-fok-1-0-cube If not a water softener will remove the manganese

I would use one bag of this media waterestore.ca/products/centurion-catalytic-carbon-h2s-media-1-cubic-foot
