I remember seeing this live. I had no idea they were playing at disneyland that day and just happened to be there on that day over 13 years ago. This is the first and only time I got to see them live. It's something that's become a core memory for me.
Bravo, Eric Marienthal !!! You won't hear any alto solo like this in most big bands. Unlike most section players who "drive between the lines" Eric Marienthal combined all the right notes with a huge amount of nasty riffing at full volume insanity that is seriously SICK ! This is the difference between an instrumentalist star and just another competent section player. A star is willing to bust through the veneer of polite playing and turn on the afterburners at full throttle. Conformity be damned ! He's going for depth, passion and intensity !!

jennifer86010 You described very well his talent, here is my thumbs up!
The jaw-droppingly funky-ass nature of this chart is only overshadowed by that grandiose saxgasm of a masterpiece coming from the lead alto man's instrument. Mr. Marienthal, you possess the respect of damn near every improvising musician alive after such a display of prowess.
2:45 Pause the video. Look at the reaction of the other saxophone players when Eric Marienthal screams up that glissando into his solo. They are knocked out !! When your fellow musicians are impressed and energized by your playing, you know you are doing something right !!
Not many people recognize this, but I appreciate the fact that Sal Lozano is getting into Eric's solos, many people in other big bands who are not 1st chair are gloomy assholes who just want to be the sticking out, but someone who can listen to a soloist in the lead chair in front of him/her and show the audience that they genuinely enjoy it is a true honest to goodness person, thanks Sal!
Clayton DeVries - Not that Eric isn't fantastic and deserves to be enjoyed by his fellow band members, but I can almost guarantee you that Gordon Goodwin has encouraged this kind of on stage enthusiasm. Our jazz ensemble opened for them at a festival last year, and it was clear to me that a big part of Goodwin's success as a bandleader is the stage presence of the band, something that's often lacking in jazz performances of all kinds. It's not just the music, it's a show.
Having been a lead trumpet player from day one, I absolutely agree Clayton DeVries! I couldn't wait to hear all solos!!! If you are into the music for the music, no one person holds the spotlight! The band is the spotlight! However, you are correct in that there are those gloomy assholes that feel under appreciated or left out. Poor bastards.
...some of the best sax solos i've ever heard. he's got a beautiful tone and an amazing range. his melodies sound as if they were composed to fit with the music perfectly.
I saw an interview where Eric Marienthal shares that one of his first full-time gigs was with the Disneyland band where he got his break via phone call to play with Chick Corea. I think it's a little ironic that he's back at Disneyland. I wonder what his younger self would have thought if he were told that he'd one day be playing there professionally after travelling the world. I wonder what his younger self would think listening to those licks. What an inspiration.
Love Sal's expression at 2:45 as Eric rips it up! I also loved how he went to the wrong mic first, and in the break in his solo sheepishly moved to the next! All the other guys are just like, "Fuck, I wish I could play like that!"
This tune has become one of my personal favorites. The licks are absolutely sick, not to mention Marienthal's INCREDIBLE solo. I honestly don't think any other sax players can do what he does as good as he does it. INSANE.
First time I heard Eric: "HE'S INCREDIBLE!! I have to know that guy's name." "Eric Marienthal....hmmm, I'll have to check out his solo stuff!" "What the.....???"
I'm not a big fan of pop music nowadays, but I get so excited whenever I'm going to listen to jazz, especially this stuff! It makes me so happy, I honest-to-God want to cry. So beautiful! I have so many songs on my iPod and I can't stop listening since I downloaded them several years ago!
I remember Eric from my high school days. I played bari sax for Corona ( not Del Mar) high school. We finished in 2nd to Corona Del Mar in at least 3 festivals! Good times, great music!
Love it! Eric is just right for the menu. This is the first time I've heard this style of music played mean, down and dirty. He's one of a kind. Took me by surprise and set me back in chair. Big band rules!
Have you heard Paul Gonsalves 27 chorus solo from Duke Ellington's 1956 Newport live performance of Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue? Go to about 4:00 at /watch?v=PYgow060zOg and listen to him wail. You'll have to crank it up, though, because the mic wasn't close enough to him.
Ensemble musical performances on TH-cam represent some of humankind at its finest: gifted musicians spending a lifetime mastering their instrument, coming together to coordinate a masterwork, and then through the miracle of technology, making it available for all of us to see and hear, for free. And while I usually don't like solos, Eric Marienthal's sax solo is, ahem, off-the-charts.
+Rafael Soto dang that altissimo slide! Not easy to pull off at the highest not possible... I probably won't be able to pull that till my 30's XD and I'm 15 atm
The great thing about TH-cam is that for every video that makes you want to quit everything (this video included), there's at least 5 others that'll make you feel so much better about yourself.
He is my FAVOURITE sax player, and i'll never change my mind about him. Good bless and when I image that he will leave us some day I get saaaaaaaaaaaaaad...
Антон Ицкович Totally agree with you and jennifer86010. I've heard many great sax players but Eric is simply the best ever. Period. Flawless technique, very versatile, great mix of articulation, amazing riffs and motifs and never a note out of place. And he's a great bloke to top it off. And the Big Phat Band is the tightest big band I've ever heard - what an outfit!
Most of the guys in that band actually got their start as musicians playing at Disneyland, believe it or not. Gotta show respect to the roots and all that.
God- You can have anything you want. Just ask. Man- Can i have $1,000,000,000,000,000? God- I cant give you that much money. Man- Can I play like Eric Marienthal? God- So how much money are we talking?
ah! thank gosh my internet is finally working so I can listen to this tune all day and night! I got this chart for trumpet the other day AND IT IS SO HARD!!!
5:41 thought the high concert c was part of eric's solo then I paid attention then it was willie on lead trumpet. Honestly, I couldn't tell the difference XD.
I remember hearing in college that Paganini was rumored to have made a deal with the Devil because he was just so damned good. This band IS that damned good. As far as the 6 dislikes... I'm gonna be kind and assume they vote in ignorance.
LOL! Funny you should say that! I'm a professional sax player who has played with a lot of artists from Lionel Hampton to Alicia Keys, Al Jarreau to The Rolling Stones, and James Brown to Bill Watrous. In fact, I met Eric Marienthal when I was with Alicia Keys at the Grammys in 2002. He was with Christina Aguilera (an artist I also worked with). Anyway, I love his playing. He is one of the best alto players I ever heard and I told him so. I also love Gordon Goodwin and his music. I have several of his albums. But when you say they are "funky white people" I always start to think about people like Maceo Parker, who can bring the house down with just 3 notes! That is true funk! And I know Mr. Marienthal acknowledges his influences. I love the power and precision of Gordon and his band, but as an African American professional I am always a little disappointed when I see a band of this caliber playing music that is obviously influenced by black musicians and there are none to be seen. Don't get me wrong. I am NOT picking on Mr. Goodwin. I LOVE what he does! I just wish I could see more black musicians on bandstands such as his. There MUST be at least a couple of qualified African American musicians who can handle that gig! If I lived in Los Angeles I would DEFINITELY seek out Mr. Goodwin and request an audition! Again, I am NOT picking on Mr. Goodwin. This is a general observation overall. Mr. Goodwin, you are truly a rare talent. As an arranger myself, I admire what you do immensely and I will continue to support you. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
How can there be hundreds of godlike professional bigbands but still one to top anything that may come along ? i used to think that there's never 1 single "best" on top .... but ... they are :D
I remember seeing this live. I had no idea they were playing at disneyland that day and just happened to be there on that day over 13 years ago. This is the first and only time I got to see them live. It's something that's become a core memory for me.

Absolutely....well said
Amen! It's funky as hell! 🤙🏽
I bet you talk to yourself in the mirror, every morning, just to validate your existence. LOL!
ed polk sounds like something you’d do, being a dick to someone who didn’t even say anything negative lol
I swear, the way Eric seamlessly blends technical precision with organic musicality is unbelievable.
Sal listening to Eric Marienthal's solo is my spirit animal

Speaking as a second alto, I completely agree
I agree with you so much that I just went to like your comment and saw I already have... 4 years ago
What an alto solo! This guy knows how to put all the energy he has into a solo like no other.
Eric sat down and I was like, "damn what a solo", and the he came back and I was done..................what a player.
...some of the best sax solos i've ever heard. he's got a beautiful tone and an amazing range. his melodies sound as if they were composed to fit with the music perfectly.

This is a fusion of Big Band instrumentation with super funky rhythms and surprise syncopations ! A very creative Gordon Goodwin!
First time I heard Eric:
"HE'S INCREDIBLE!! I have to know that guy's name."
"Eric Marienthal....hmmm, I'll have to check out his solo stuff!"
"What the.....???"
you dont like his solo in the album?
Smooth Jazz is where the money is at these days. Unfortunately.

@@superrhombus1 OMG I have no words for this!! I love when Eric plays with the drummer
Haha Same. I love his big band solos but I’m not at all a smooth jazz guy

Are there even any words to describe how amazing that was. I could never do that . Applause to you my friend
I remember Eric from my high school days. I played bari sax for Corona ( not Del Mar) high school. We finished in 2nd to Corona Del Mar in at least 3 festivals! Good times, great music!
Goodwin has an amazing band. Won a Grammy for Brad Bird/Pixar's "Incredibles" score.
Eric is a monster sax player ! This is Big Band on steroids.
Holy shit!! First time I got goosebumps listening to anything on TH-cam. This kills.

I love the comping from the drums during Eric's second solo, BOSS!!!
i love how he's closing his eyes the whole freaking time....
I could watch this video repeatedly and never get tired of it. Eric, you absolutely own, and Big Phat Band, you guys are always on fire! GO GGBPB!!!!
Eric always adds that nice touch to the band. Great Band. Sweet! Entertaining.
Best 6'32 min I lived this week! That is AWESOME!

Man oh man, do I love Eric. He always plays with passion. Also, I see you back there in brass section, Francisco. This is a great band.
Absolutely love bernie dresels playing, some sick soloing. And the saxophonist shredded it. Tight, phenomenal shit. This is music. Just. Great.
