Some of us have to work harder for endurance. I was a returning player. I played some exercises daily, and was starting to play in a few groups. Range was improving, and I was getting to play lead in some jazz big bands. One night, after work, I went to the parking garage to warm up before going to rehearsal. A security guard approached me, and instead of chastising me for making noise, he talked trumpet. He was impressed with my sound, told me that he played some trumpet also. He probably played twice a week for bit, and not with any groups. He subsequently told a friend who lead a big band about me, saying that I should be considered. I later played with that group. A few months later, I visited him at my while he was working on a Saturday, and we played some intermediate level etudes. After each duet, I would talk a bit. It gave a few minute break before the next etude, but he didn't need that. Not fair! I practiced and played much more than him, and there was no argument that I was playing at a higher level. But his endurance in the mid register beat mine.
This master doesn't need to audition. I played first cornet in my junior brass band back in the 90's. He shook my hand after we won in Narrabri at the state championship where we played Caravan and I had a solo. Best moment of my life.
This is truly fabulous. I was there in the front few rows. It was unbelievable to watch this amazing band. Please bring back The Big Phat Band to Generations in Jazz!
I've met and heard both Wayne B and James Morrison live. Wayne is an incredible lead trumpet player. James is the best jazz "musician" in the world. I love the ending of this chart. Look at Wayne holding back for the final few high register notes. James plays the entire run up and matches Wayne on the very last note, to the surprise and laughter/respect of everyone else in the trumpet section. Monster player...
I simply cannot get enough of this clip! Recently had the luck to see Mnozil Brass recently here in the States and was kinda hoping James would just walk on stage. Amazing!
I was there for this performance, and even after seeing it live it still makes me cheer in excitement watching these dudes play. Trumpet jizz! These guys are amazing!!!
They were all just having a lot of fun. I think they all know who can do what the best, etc., and all have a lot of respect for each other - unlike some of the guys' comments here.
FACTS. This was a blast to watch i was bobbing and the whole time and there were times we're i straight up laughed out loud cause the fun was so contagious.
Title should say: James Morrison auditioning some guys to see if they can keep up. 😅😅 Nahh I kid, mad respect for all these amazing musicians. That beat was deadly and they all shone hard.
I swear I use to wonder why I was not impressed with what eventually came handed down to us as "Jazz"...that is until I went to New Orleans and heard the brass bands there playing. THEY are out of this WORLD. Here are some of their names: Hot 8, Rebirth, Treme, etc. They are legion and have been growing in number ever since many of the old timers saw the art being lost and not passed on to the youth. They took it upon themselves to teach them and now it's being passed on. They can be seen on Sundays in Second Lines, at birthday parties, graduations, weddings, funerals, parades. I LOVE NOLA !!!!
No literally, I had my tuner out. It was about the same note. If you're saying Wayne is the best, then you haven't heard enough of the others, especially James he blasts double C's constantly with wonderful tone. Not saying Wayne can't do that, but they're all really equal on range.
O' Lizards Yeah they all play the same tone, but who has the clearest tone? Wayne. Who Holds the tone the longest? Wayne. Who is said to be the prodigy of Maynard Ferguson? Wayne. The evidence is clear...
Depends on who you ask, I repeat you have to listen to them all before you draw an asinine conclusion. The time doesn't really matter, they were improvising meaning they could play as high as they want for as long as they want, the guy on the far left and far right even beat out Wayne on range just in general. Check out "Snappy Too" zogs jog, james morrison, he has a trumpet solo where he holds Double C for a good bit of time. And I could list the rest of them for you, but you need to listen for yourself. They're all about equal on range, tone is a matter of preference.
Damn Judi that’s a pretty fuckin’ cool clip, thanks for putting it up. I’d like to apologise for my bad language in that last sentence, the word cool is so 1980’s.
willie Murillo came to work with the top band at our school in 2015 wen I was in the 2nd lowest band. Now I'm 1st trombone in the top one why couldn't he have come this year ;-;
Faredun Dungore When you responded to Martin Pique he said the guys name was Willie Murillo and you said "You mean Willie Murillo?" You were correcting the guys spelling of Willie's name but you spelt it the same way :p
***** Actually, that's incorrect in a big band setting. A lead player in a big band situation is simply the player that has the highest part in the section. They're the ones that have to play all the high and loud stuff. That does not mean they are necessarily the best player overall, they are just very suited to playing high, loud things. Most times the soloist is on the 2nd part because the lead part is so demanding they need to save their chops. This is very different from a classical ensemble such as an orchestra where the soloist is in fact the Principal/first chair and is generally voiced the highest, although they often have the 3rd/4th chair in an assistant principal role to help them not become tired out.
How do these legends not get tired? My trumpet chops gets tired from just watching this!!!
they get used to it + practice
Air control and constant warming up/practicing/playing.. give or take
They build up endurance and learn how to play efficiently.
Some of us have to work harder for endurance.

Jonahly false. It’s their muscles
If James Morrison couldn't pass an audition then who could? Morrison is a musical phenomenon! Wow!!!!!!!
I was privileged to be there in the audience. What a band! What musicians - a superb night of fun and musicianship.
was this at gij?

3:46 wayne dominated the section with the lead part, even over the top of the other trumpeters, that is a true sign of a powerful sound
Is Wayne 2nd tpt from the left?
@@YourHostNathanBurke yep that's him
its not just sound, but frequency as well.. when you play at the top of everyone, you´re the one, the audience is most likely to hear :)
I wouldn’t say dominated but effective lead trumpet playing. Knowing where to push a little.
he had the power of non formal clothes ahah
Nobody be talking bout that trombonist blasting out the low notes, I can feel the bass in my head.
It's AMAZING in that how they all "connected" or continued with each other's solos. Music first! Ego 2nd.
CD 😅😅😅c😅. V v😅

Mount gambier?
The actual composition is amazing. The piano the guitar the main melody. Beautiful

My old Eastman classmates, Brian Scanlon on tenor sax/flute, and Bernie Dresel on drums. Killin' it as ever!

Fantastic screen name.
Trumpet what?
@@tristanperciful6609 you heard him
I was there for this as well, loved it, and I'm a trombonist.
I keep coming back to this it’s great!
I know right!?
F***in Brilliant. Superb playing by all the band, playng a really raucus number. Blew the roof off!!!
I think I've watched this video about 10 times in the last 5 years. This is among the best and most fun James Morrison clips EVER!!!
If Morrison were in there, this would undeniably go down as the greatest trumpet section in history!
They were all just having a lot of fun. I think they all know who can do what the best, etc., and all have a lot of respect for each other - unlike some of the guys' comments here.
I feel like this song is just incredibly fun to play
Every live recording I’ve seen it’s just them enjoying themselves on stage.
One of the rare "music olympics" I like. Music is not a competition, it's a group sport.
I remember being in the audience for that!! Such an amazing concert
Generations In Jazz
one of the best jazz Fests I've ever been to
im performing there in a week!!!!!
It is so good to see all these very talented musicians having fun on stage. That's sooooo great! Thank you for this video :)
3:57 flute and sax guy pushes the Trumpet out of the way. I see how it is
thats the point, it was done on purpose, the whole point of the piece is mocking trumpet ego and competition between them and woodwinds
Carlos Sims . Hilarious!
Is that Eric Marenthal on 🎷?!?!??
@@MAYNOR82 think so, definitely looks like him
Very beautiful orchestra!!! Super music!!! 👍👍👍
trumpet players just want to have fun :-) oozes fun and happiness
very true! For a while I'm ashamed to admit that I thought James Morrison was actually auditioning, my mistake!
Judi Morrison l
Did he get the gig??

It’s funny how no matter how old you are,the band still plays around
That last note lol. Lead trumpet has to assert himself now and then! I love it.
That was pure trumpet awesomeness
Holy crap!!! this is a song my band is playing right now for our next concert!!!!!!!!!
Mr Morrison can play all of the instruments on the stage quite nicely indeed ..

The song is called Backrow Politics in case you were wondering 😉❤️
Still one of the best JM videos ever, I had to watch it again...
On ya Judi...
Love your playing James

I think he made it.
Ik vind ze allemaal geweldig, niet alleen de hoge noten maar ook de interactie.
Love the flute section in this lol (I play sax primarily and flute as secondary)
That is amazing!
Who wouldn't want to sit in on that? :-)
That drummer is really driving these guys. Fun stuff.
What a killer band
They look like they're having a ball. Which is how it should be. Put a huge smile on my face anyway.
Blown Away ...... All of this is GOOD! This band is Awesome. Props to Wayne. A fatter sound in the stratosphere? Nobody.
You mean Phatter
oMG I CLICKED ON THIS FROM A DIFFERENT JAMES MORRISON VID AND I PLAYED THAT SONG IN JAZZ
These guys produce the most swinging jazz sounds in America. There;s no band quite like this. My feet and drumsticks have minds of their own.
Nunca vi tanto Trumpetista juntos e novos gigantes do jazz
Certainly one of the tightest bands I've ever heard, and not just the trumpets.
I didn't know Stephen King played the trumpet. 🤣😂 Kidding!!
Love this!!!
Auditioning? Seriously? Is there any doubt whether he could play with any section anywhere?
yes, maybe he's just too good for the section
James Morrison Is better than them!
I think it is meant jokingly. Don't take the headline too serious. It goes without saying that James Morrison is one-of-a-kind.
It’s meant to be a joke folks.
It's a joke. James can play with anyone. That's why it's funny.
3:19 Beautiful!
James is not the only one who can play high notes
I think it would have been for the best of the jazz world that he didn't get in. The damage that they could have done...
3:40, all the trumpet players showing off their high register, Wayne puts em all to shame
I think they all play about the same note on there.
They're all pretty even on range.
O' Lizards False, Wayne Bergeron is not only the greatest upper-register player in the band, but propably also the greatest in the world.

I play piano and guitar (Chording only) but the trumpet is my favorite instrument. Incredible.
Who gives a shit who played the last note !!!!!!????? These guys ALL kick ass and take names !!!! Some of the best in the world.
2:45 i love that line
3:18 I like the little Wayne Bergeron entry que. haha
Whoa, nobody has that upper register sound like Wayne!!
5:21. I love this part so much
The only big band on earth with 5 screaming lead trumpet players.
The fantastic four plus one!
3:35 wayne shows everyone who’s boss
the guy 2nd from the left had all the power and had good sounding solo parts
that's Wayne Bergeron for you. One of the best in the world.
Juan De La Rosa of course
He does it's Wayne Bergeron
wayne bergeron was mentored by maynard if i remember correctly
