    Enigma Variations, du nom de Variations sur un thème original ("Enigma"), op. 36, série de 14 courts portraits musicaux d'Edward Elgar dont la première a eu lieu à Londres le 19 juin 1899. Les sujets de ces portraits étaient plusieurs amis et membres de la famille du compositeur. Les origines de l'œuvre ont été décrites par Elgar dans une lettre adressée à son ami August Jaeger, de la maison d'édition musicale Novello & Company. "J'ai esquissé une série de Variations (orkestry) sur un thème original", a écrit le compositeur.
    En effet, le fait de ne pas connaître les originaux esquissés par Elgar n'enlève rien au plaisir de l'auditeur de la musique d'Elgar, bien qu'une connaissance plus approfondie des intentions du compositeur ajoute une dose d'humour qui pourrait manquer à l'auditeur occasionnel. La charmante première variation, par exemple, est une appréciation de la femme du compositeur, Alice. L'avant-dernière variation, consacrée à une amie dont Elgar pensait qu'elle était à l'époque en route pour l'Australie, cite l'ouverture de Felix Mendelssohn, Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage. La variation n° 11, bien que nommée d'après l'organiste George Sinclair, est en fait un portrait du bouledogue turbulent de Sinclair, Dan.
    La plus connue de ces variations est la sereine variation n°9, identifiée par le compositeur comme "Nimrod". Le nom est un jeu de mots, car le Nimrod biblique était un grand chasseur, et le mot allemand signifiant "chasseur" est Jaeger. Ce mouvement lyrique décrit une conversation chaleureuse entre le compositeur et son ami Jaeger, qui, selon Elgar, a offert un précieux conseil artistique tout au long d'une longue collaboration. La dernière variation dépeint le compositeur lui-même, bien qu'elle comprenne la musique de la première variation ainsi que le thème de "Nimrod" pour indiquer la signification de ses deux plus fortes influences.
    La structure des Variations Enigmatiques est la suivante :
    * C.A.E. (la femme d'Elgar, Caroline Alice Elgar)
    * H.D.S.-P. (Hew David Steuart-Powell, pianiste et musicien de chambre)
    * R.B.T. (Richard Baxter Townshend)
    * W.M.B. (William Meath Baker)
    * R.P.A. (Richard Penrose Arnold, fils du poète anglais Matthew Arnold)
    * Ysobel (Isabel Fitton, altiste amateur)
    * Troyte (A. Troyte Griffith, architecte et pianiste en herbe)
    * W.N. (Winifred Norbury, une matrone des arts avec un rire caractéristique)
    * Nimrod (A.J. Jaeger [voir ci-dessus])
    * Dorabella (Dora Penny, fille du recteur de Wolverhampton)
    * G.R.S. (George Robertson Sinclair, organiste à la cathédrale de Hereford, et son chien)
    * B.G.N. (Basil G. Nevinson, violoncelliste amateur et musicien de chambre)
    * * (une amie qu'il pensait être en voyage)
    * E.D.U. (surnom de la femme d'Elgar pour lui)
    Comme la partition originale indique les personnes représentées uniquement par des initiales, on peut supposer que leur identité est l'énigme du titre. Pourtant, Elgar a librement nommé chaque personne et a indiqué ce qu'il espérait représenter à son sujet. Selon Elgar, le véritable mystère était le thème de la pièce. Il a fait remarquer que "dans l'ensemble, un autre thème plus vaste "va" mais n'est pas joué". Ce thème a été deviné de différentes manières : "Rule Britannia", "God Save the Queen", le "Dies Irae", "Auld Lang Syne", ou encore "Pop Goes the Weasel". Mais Elgar est mort sans avoir identifié son thème, et l'énigme demeure.

    I can't really find the words to express just how dearly I hold Sir John in my heart. I've been accused of being too sentimental for recordings I heard first, when it comes to Sir John, but it's not true. He will always remain a great artist. I love the rare video of him and vK at some gathering in the early 60s and Barbirolli walks up to vK, both smiling at each other, and then he brushes off vK's shoulders like a doting father, and touches up his tie... just to tease him. The fondness and love they have for each other is very touching indeed.

    I've stated this many times on TH-cam and am very happy to reiterate, that in my opinion, and I know in others too, dear Sir John was, and will forever be, one of the finest interpreters of Elgar we shall ever see.

      You could be right. Sometimes someone just completely and utterly is able to perfectly convey the magic of another's creations. In this case it's a conductor but it's the same with musicians.
      There's a Korean conductor Myung-whun Chung who also seems to turn to gold just about everything he touches.
      These rare types are from higher dimensions I think! Whatever the case let's feel deep gratitude.
      Thanks for your comment.

    Here is a great classic of the repertoire taken from the superb 109-disc box set dedicated to Sir John Barbirolli (amzn.to/3mRQZIL)
    Sir John Barbirolli will never cease to surprise us. In Elgar, he sets the exact tone for the famous "Nemrod" variation that many conductors stretch to the point that the musical discourse is diluted and loses its tension. During World War II, Sir John Barbirolli used to conduct open-air concerts in front of 3000-5000 people, many more than today's concert halls. He therefore developed abilities that enabled him to obtain maximum power and musicality from the musicians under his direction.. Barbirolli once said to the orchestra during an Elgar rehearsal , '' God how I love this music'' And as he got older, he wore his heart on his sleeve more and more and it showed through in the later recordings ! But the music can take it !
