    BMI 30'ish... I'm 5 ' 11'' and 215 lbs. I just started CPAP and in the last 50 days, I can't say enough how much better I feel. I have begun a KETO diet -- sort of.. eating a lot of salads and staying mostly clear of carbs. I feel great. It would be a miracle to get off of CPAP. When I took the test for sleep apnea, I had an average of 52 events per hour. Now I have an average of 5 per hour for the las month or so. Huge improvement. I can't wait to lose more weight. Cheers!

    After Keto I lost over 100lbs, knee pain corrected, snoring stopped and I no longer need the CPAP.

      Unless it has changed, people on Medicare can not use the home monitor for the diagnosis.

    I was diagnosed in September 2017 with Apnea. I am 5'10" and was 245lbs at the time. I tried the cpap machine and could not do it. I decided to get into shape to see if I could stop snoring and breath better at night. I started hiking, walking, jogging and lost 25 lbs in a few months. Then I took up road cycling and I am now at 199lbs today, shooting for 185 by the end of the year or sooner. Also have implemented a low card keto style diet, now doing IF/OMAD the majority of the time and I feel great. Your youtube channel really well done and very informative!

    After fasting and 2.5 months on keto, lost 35#, I no longer feel the need to use cpap to sleep. No more sore throat or harsh voice in the mornings. Waking up refreshed and well rested is amazing.

      Fidelity Quester - that sounds so encouraging. Good job in the drastic improvements. I would still recommend rechecking before stopping that CPAP. Your brain suffers is your oxygen sinks during your sleep. Check before you stop is what I tell my patients.

    My husband was at a 40+ BMI prior to keto, now down to a 24 BMI. Slept with a CPAP for 10 years +, now using a mouth guard from our sleep certified dentist. Doing well on this regimen, will most likely continue with this as there is a history of this in his family. (His mom died in her sleep at age 60, she was very overweight, a smoker, etc.). Thanks for your great work and teaching, Dr Boz!

    BMI was 45, after 4 months of Keto diet is now 38. CPAP diagnosed as severe level 1 (considered life threatening, blood oxygen went to 75% when tested overnight) I even use the CPAP while napping...

    This video is very timely as I noticed some very strange effects of a new voyage into intermittent fasting and a sloppy keto approach to my health . I have used CPAP for years and when I just lie on my back (while awake) and really relax my jaw and pharynx tissues, i can easily feel my throat occlude fully. Going to a dentist for work, I really occlude. I simply cannot even take a short nap on my back without feeling myself struggle for air as I am dozing off. So, fast forward to my second week on new eating, and intermittent fasting ... i sat the other night on my back and under my best efforts, I cannot occlude my throat anymore. Not thinking of abandoning, my CPAP but the curious thing is, I have not lost a wack of weight...yet ....which is the more common explanation for why our throats occlude in night. Having a wack of weight or fat over my throat simply doesn’t explain fully why my sleep apnea is so bad... gosh darn it, I would love to see research on link between ketosis and apnea. There is gobs of research on insulin resistance and diabetes on the link with sleep apnea but, I am seeing effects on my throat tone in only TWO weeks.

      Brandt great point i agree besides weight loss.... Insulin resistance/hormonal balance which is corrected by intermittent fasting should be helpful..

    I use a CPAP - diagnosed with severe apnea in 1997. I've lost ~55lbs since 10/2018 on keto/carnivore; my weight is now ~212. Btw, my A1c went from 10.2 to 5.2. !!!! Fasting insulin tested at 4.7. My fasting morning BG is still 80-105. :( My BMI is ~28. I'm single so couldn't get snoring feedback. But, anecdotally, I feel like the apnea has improved greatly. In a year or so, I intend to have another sleep study. But, to be honest, I don't have a strong goal of getting rid of the CPAP. I've used it for so long, and I'm so committed to the benefits, I actually think I might not enjoy not using it. LOL

    Really informative. I've used a cpap machine for so long, I dont remember what's it's like not to use one. Now both brothers and my cousin use one too. I guess my mom had severe sleep apnea, untreated. She really passed with dementia.

      sue kirsh - you’re protecting your brain by wearing that machine. Good job. Stop it only if you can prove the apnea has stopped. Good job

    I'm starting the Ketogenic diet now, and will incorporate intermittent fasting into my routine (on an every other day basis) once my body has adapted to Keto. My BMI is 39 at 6'2". I'm also getting a CPAP machine and i'm excited to experience positive results. My REI: 38 My OAI: 17.3 My lowest desat is: 80 My pcp is not supporting of me going on Keto, but i'm going to give it a trial run of at least 6 mos. And i'm currently on Lisinopril 30mg daily. I'm hopeful that one day my BMI will return to a normal range and also that my OSA goes away. I've really become interested in biohacking my body.

    BMI=24 body fat ~= 17% Still need CPAP. I lose 3% oxygen saturation and my heart rate goes up 1bpm without the machine. Don't count on "weight loss" to "fix" apnea, it may well be your weight gain was due to apnea and not the other way around. I have my own pulse-ox monitor and it will record all night.

    BMI 26 down from 28, CPAP for 4 years. I've had a hard time with compliance, I don't like things on my face when sleeping. Put mask on when I go to sleep but wake up with it off most of the time. Finding that I'm more well rested now that I've lost 15 lbs. I can only believe my sleep Apnea is less but have not had it tested yet.

    Is weight loss the only thing you can talk about??? 😡 Jesus
    I was diagnosed with Sleep A. 24 years ago. I was 126 lbs overweight. My CPAP machine kept me alive until 2017 when my sister gave me a copy of Any Way You Can. I had just lost my wife to Pancreatic Cancer. That's an ugly way to go.
    I watched you and Doc Berry on TH-cam. I drifted with him to Carnivore. I have been in Ketosis for 5+ years, and can prove it, KetoMojo history. I will be 86 in August. I take 1, one, medication. 20mg of Sildenafil twice a day, for oxygen-lung-improvement. Yes, it has a side effect 😀.
    I weigh 159lbs, + or - 2 lbs and have for 4 years. I am 5' 9.5 inches tall.
    Do not look down your nose with a smirk on your face when Sleep Apnea is discussed.
    I still wear my CPAP EVERY night. I constantly average 7.6 hours of sleep.
    ps. I gifted 41 copies of Any Way You Can.
    CPAP and Ketosis share a commonality. You have to want to do it.

    Good, I hate using a CPAP too, esp when travelling. My BMI is now 28.7. I too have a big neck. If I nap, without the cpap, I dream of being suffocated. Btw, my bmi was 34.6

    some people take a sleep aid for the in-lab studies, which is perfectly acceptable. they're really more comprehensive and accurate than the home studies.

    Interesting, I am noticing a pattern that when I use my machine, I have less instances of leg cramping? Been on Keto for little over two months and taking magnesium and drinking plenty of water but experience severe cramps in lower calf muscles.

    • @DoctorBoz
      @DoctorBoz  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      William Helpley - magnesium is a very common problem. When my patients have this ... I suggest FLOAT SPA x 3 visits in one week... and start supplementing magnesium

    • @nancyarchibald9095
      @nancyarchibald9095 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rub magnesium lotion on calves before bed. Plus...take 2 mag. pills before bed. I've lost 66 lbs. on keto and still use Bi-pap WITH supplemental oxygen every night. I LOOK FORWARD TO IT for restful 10-12 hours of sleep each night.

    Dr Boz please can you give me some advice. I am a 62 year old woman living in the UK and was diagnosed with severe Sleep Apnea 5/12/17. The only treatment I have been offered is the CPAP which I was unable to use due to severe claustrophobia and panic attacks, so I am currently untreated. I am 5ft 2", unsure of my weight but think I am around 14 stone. I discovered keto recently and have been eating low carb for 6 weeks now, not sure if I am doing it correctly, but am researching as much as I can. Is there anything else you can suggest that I do? Also how can I tell when/if I get into ketosis? Thanks for any help you can offer.

    Will fasting and ketones help repair sleep apnea brain damage???

    • @billleach3396
      @billleach3396 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you really do stay in nutritional ketosis and fast long enough (at least 14 hours, 24 or 36 is better) AND sleep well enough to get into a deep sleep then yes brain damage will be repaired. Of course memory associated with lost neurons will not likely be restored but the capacity will be.

    My BMI is 34.6 . I had severe sleep apnea for 12 years or so, and had been on a cpap machine. Weight related I believed, since the last time I lost about 30 pounds (about 6 years ago- and gained it back) my apnea moved from severe to moderate. But, I watched on 2fitdocs that Dr. Keith stopped snoring after being on Keto for one week. They say it was because he was not eating inflammatory food on keto. I was so excited, that I slept without the cpap that night (I had been doing keto for about 2 weeks by then), and used a sleep app called snorelab which listens and records while you sleep and gives a nice chart of your night's snoring also. There was no snoring, and no apnea. I could hear from the recording smooth breathing. That is a miracle. I have been sleeping without the cpap since then and feel great.

      @billleach3396 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great and thanks for the tip on the snoring app!
      My BMI is 21.5. I was using a CPAP until it broke. I can't afford a new one and I can't find a replacement for the failed blower. However, I have dropped over a hundred pounds since I was originally diagnosed with sleep apnea.
