    I agree, there are places where customer service leaves a bit to be desired, but as a person who has worked in customer service for 30+ years I pride myself on going over and above for others. I work in a cafe in a hospital and find empathy and support will always improve the day of someone else.

      Thank you Honey 😊 Nt just for being with us and for saying hi but for everything you do...My stepdad was recently in hospital and my mum told me that the staff bought her a blanket so that she could stay with him...she said that their kindness made her feel so special. Thank you for being part of that very much needed support group ❤️

    I can't remember if it was the 1970's or 80's, but Spike Milligan visited New Zealand. When he appeared at the arrivals area, a reporter asked him what he thought of New Zealand. Without hesitation, Spike Milligan replied "It looks like the inside of an airport terminal" .

    Interesting you should say that about customer service. This year I moved from NZ to the UK (cambridge) and even after all the travel i've done and a couple of other countries i've lived in, i'm having trouble adjusting to the idea of living here. I found customer service 1million times better in NZ. All my interactions with customer assistance staff here has left me really shocked. None of them smile, noone approaches you to see if you need help - i've actually had staff see me approach them and turn around and walk away. Instead the interactions are terse, and they act as though I am inconveniencing them with a simple question. I'm always smiley and polite. The hardware store atmosphere is hugely different, not only the size of stores, and range of products, but at M10 or bunnings, staff will actually help you and enquire about your project and go out of their way to make sure you have the right things that you need. I said to my Husband (who has lived in NZ for 11 years but is born brit) I haven't lived a life everywhere, but I think a life in NZ, regardless of its current problems, is a life hard to beat. He agreed. As a kiwi I think you often think the grass is greener on the other side because of 'bigger, more famous countries' who have more but I actually don't think that is the case anymore. After only 4 months, I know deep down I will have to return home to NZ in the near future.

      So agree with you. We lived in UK found the same attitude, no smiles, abrupt. Found it in Banks, Hospo, Doctors. Nzers at least up front. And yes have found some customer service in NZ lacking. BUT not all customer service.

    It's interesting you say we have no issue with bad service on the phone, as normally that's where I have the best service with NZ companies, and worst with international. I've had to call my bank recently bout a credit card issue, they were quick polite, got things sorted, and also got a non-credit card issue sorted at the same time, no issue.
    But dealing with International companies the times I've had to call them, like pulling teeth to get things sorted, saying "not our issue" or "it's out of warranty" till you get them to read their NZ support section and realise if they don't help you the Consumer Guarantees act will bite them hard.
    In person service, I think it's NZ has less of a culture of retail/customer facing service as a career, it's more of only a job, and generally not particularly high paying one, so you get the service you pay for, where Europe has more of a culture for professional customer service, and for the US they hold your job over your head if you get complaints.

    I am a Canadian and have many lovely friends in NZ. They are a great lot over all.
    The one thing that I always find rude is that Kiwis will always remind you that you must strip your bed down before you leave. In North America ( I am sure I can speak for Americans also) that would so horrible for a host to ask. We do it ourselves after our guests have left.

    Always love watching and listening to you guys. You, as usual, have a beautiful garden. That combined with listening to two nice people, makes for a very relaxing watch. And that asking what do you think of NZ, etc, goes back decades. A former British MP, before he became an MP for Grimsby, spent a spell in NZ duing the 60s, and wrote a book about it. I'll try and find the book as I don't remember his name off the top of my head. But he said he was asked what he thought of NZ as soon as he got off the plane. I'm obviously not a true Kiwi as I don't ask people things like that 😜

      @@ItsaDrama it was given to me by a friend who was moving back to NZ from London at the time. She said she used to throw it against the wall in anger a few times. I really should finsh reading it. I have it floating around somewhere. I'll let you know as soon as I find it. Something called Half-gallon Quarter-acre Pavlova Paradise. The guy was called Austin Mitchell.

  • @monowaikiwi6802
    @monowaikiwi6802 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another great insight - FYI - The English Politician (Austin Mitchell) who visited NZ in the 1970's labelled the question "How do you like NZ?" as question number 1, as it was the first question every reported asked him. When he first arrived and was asked question number 1, and not realising that it was a part of Kiwi culture, he answered that while he had only been in the country 5 minutes he did notice the graffiti in the toilets was more literate than the UK. And from then he was reported as some sort of sex predator. So - be careful when answering question number 1!!! Others good points also. MrG

    • @eleanorlamont7375
      @eleanorlamont7375 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am Canadian. I live in a small town in Ontario between Toronto and London. The amount of graffiti on people's personal property in NZ has always blown me away. How disrespectful. There is probably more "paint jobs" in a wee spot eg any small town on the N Island than there is in our big cities.

    When I came back to NZ in' 75 my English Dad went. back after 25 year being away, then when he got back here he said. I know why you didn't like it over there.
    So dirty, dog poop, cigarette butt's, people smoking, so many people.
    People don't look at you when communicating. Bus drivers take off b4 you sit down.........
    There were a lot of changes for him, he was so glad to get back and into his tool shed etc.
    Like you our family tries to awhi strangers from other parts of the country and overseas. I made a brochure.
    Ooooooohoooo. You did it.

    Thank you for another brilliant video ❤ I especially think you're right to a point about customer service, but we loose a lot of our best hospitality people to Australia because of the terrible pay here. Having said that, I've had some outstanding experiences here too. The absolute worst I've ever actually had was with Air Canada at Vancouver airport recently - 2 different staff just being unnecessarily rude, not just unhelpful 🤷‍♀️

    The bigger a NZ business gets, the worse the customer service.
    (Think about Air NZ, any telco or power company, Government Departments)

    Re: customer service I can tell you that people can be really horrible an abusive to those providing the service. It’s a two way street. I love the service we get in restaurants here as it is very unobtrusive but polite . I hate wait people hovering.

    I have lived here all my life and assume that I am accepted as a Kiwi, however I don't ask people what they think of our country as they invariably tell you before you get a chance. As for your last comment, I have to concur wholeheartedly as individual Kiwi's that I know will all help others when they can, however I can't say the same for some corporations or government departments..

    I know how you feel about the country being too full. I don't even live there anymore, but am dead worried about there not being any space left for me should I win that lottery and manage to move back home. As for skilled and trained workers, especially in healthcare, fingers crossed that NZ manages to balance costs with fair pay so healthcare workers don't want to jump the ditch, and the kids wanting to be in school so NZ has a homegrown skilled and trained workforce of its own so it doesn't need to entice people from outside the country- that's better for the rest of the world too, if NZ is no longer snagging healthcare workers from the world's small pool.
    Lord, what a conundrum.

    I have been here in NZ since late 1972 and things were much worse then. NZ response was very anti Pom. As so any of us all came out at the same time we tended to stick to an English community and was a long time before we felt Kiwi

    You have the attitude and heart. You simply found your way home.
    In my humble opinion .... real Kiwis love hokey pokie ice cream, and dad jokes.

    The customer service thing, and being put elsewhere on bad days - As a teen I worked in the local dairy (corner store), at the till. I had a great boss, an older lady. She would look at my face when I came in and say either Hi, how are you? Blah blah. Or she'd say That time again, huh? That sucks. Take a seat in the office and I'll find some sitting down work for you. I loved that woman, but she spoiled me for other bosses.
