Should definitely do "A Tábua de Esmeralda" by Jorge Ben Jor, another classic Brazilian album from the 70's and one of the most interesting artists to come out of Brazil

As a brazilian music lover, I'm always glad to see any reactions of Clube da Esquina. I'm from Clube da Esquina's state (Minas Gerais) and have been living in their city (Belo Horizonte) for about ten years or so, and it's really heartwarming to see people from other places and countries vibing with my favorite record of all time! By the way, there's just a little thing about "O Trem Azul" that gets lost in translation. Even though "trem" is the word for trains, it is also a slang for "thing" in our homestate. as the metaforical nature of Lô's lyrics, "O Trem Azul" could have a double-meaning of what it is reffering to, which brings me to what makes this album so special to me: this album is also (but not exclusively) about some of our local cultures, and we can see with their musical influences, mixing Beatles and psychodelia with our regional sounds - same thing as Novos Baianos (another amazing group from Brazil) did. However, in "Trem de Doido" we have a tragic true story about a train that took people to a famous asylum. Minas Gerais is such a rich place culturally speaking (as in Brazil in general), and it's so cool to see others' perspectives on our music. Cheers from Belo Horizonte!!
Yoo that's amazing! As a Brazilian viewer, I want to recommend two other albums for you to listen, even if it doesn't turn into a reaction video: 1) Novos Baianos - Acabou Chorare 2) Lo Borges - Lo Borges (debut solo album from singer Lo, which he recorded right after Clube da Esquina and is extremely underrated)
Man if your doing brazilian stuff please please listen to Acabou Chorare by Novos Baianos. It is genuinely one of my favorite albums and is such an amazing listen
great video smags i am from the same town as milton nascimento and we are very proud of him, lo borges and this album last year paul mccartney came here in belo horizonte to do a concert and milton was a personal guest from him, i saw him and paul that day, milton was treated as a star and finally met his idol (he even has a song in another album called for lennon and mccartney) thanks for the video again ❤️🇧🇷
Excellent choice, happy to see younger people discovering this masterpiece. Honestly this is one of the greatest albums ever made in any language. It has so many layers and I notice new things every time I listen to it
Love this album, I agree with you on how earthy it is! My suggestion for you is Macintosh Plus - Floral Shoppe. It’s not on Spotify so you’ll have to listen to it through other means (TH-cam, downloading it, etc)
Ah! So glad you checked out this album! If you’re looking to check out some more Brazilian records from around the same time I’d highly recommend Construciao by Chico Buarque, and the first of two self titled records by Gal Costa in 1969. The second is good as well, but the first is truly a perfect record
Incredible reaction my man :) A couple of other albums from my country I would absolutely recommend are Acabou Chorare by Novos Baianos and Chico Buarque's Construção. Both gigantic classic on their own, and both have very strong contenders for best song of all time
If we're doing albums that didn't win the poll, you should do Maggot Brain by Funkadelic soon. It only lost by 1% to Can's Tago Mago on the 1971 poll. A lot of people were requesting Funhouse too on the 1970's poll comments. Just like people were for this album. Keep up the great work Smags!
Valeu brother❗❗❗ 🎙🎼🎵🎶👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
this is an easy 10/10 for me and I was pleasently surprised to see you listened to it when I’ve just discovered your channel after seeing your To Be Kind reaction. Brazil is kind of a fucked up country, but it has the most beautiful cultural assets in the world and I am happy to see this being acknowledged. Props to you, man, really enjoying your work.
Omg Milton Nascimento lfg. It would be sweet if you reacted to Arthur Veroçai sometime. Mostly, though, I'm just hoping you react to Ys by Joanna Newsom.
i have a few requests for albums you should do in the future !! 1. Yves Tumor - Safe in the Hands of Love ( Neo-Psychedelia, Post-Industrial ) 2. Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun ( Experimental Rock, Krautrock, Neo-Psychedelia ) 3. Cat Power - Moon Pix ( Slowcore ) 4. Pinback - Blue Screen Life ( Indie Rock ) 5. Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest ( Neo-Psychedelia, Indie Rock ) 6. At The Drive-In - Relationship of Command ( Post-Hardcore )
If you liked the rock of the corner club, especially in "Trem de Doido", I strongly recommend that you listen to Lô Borges' album from 1972, popularly called "Disco do Tênis" (tennis album). It's another completely different facet of rock that they also knew how to do very well. And about the duet of the song, it's Lô together with Beto Guedes and Milton Nascimento (very soft)
hi, this is a new music from him and esperanza spalding, do you realy need to hear. congrats, i'm new here and a liked. i'm from the city from him, he is an angel. belo horizonte, minas gerais, brasil.
Milton Nascimento’s solo album "Geraes" is my favorite by him, I would recommend checking that one out next if you continue with his work. Lô Borges’ self-titled debut also rules. If you want to explore more Brazilian music (and you should), a few killer albums: Gal Costa - Índia Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda Marcos Valle - Previsão do Tempo
Day 2 (i think) of recomending to bring you my love by pj harvey until smags does it, also, you should deffo check out Artaud and Clics Modernos if you like latin music!!!
LOVE YOUR VIDEOS MY GUY a few recommendations: Process - Sampha (experimental r&b, great production) Nurture - Porter Robinson (light summer electric with fun production) Koi No Yokan - Deftones (very heavy, sexier and heavier radiohead imo) Hypochondriac - Brakence (very experimental emo rap, glitch pop) Reading Writing And Arithmetic - The Sundays (the smiths ish, with beautiful female vocals)
BRO- LOVE BRAZILIAN MUSIC!! This is a great singer songwriter(s) album. CHECK OUT “AZYMUTH - AZIMUTH” and “JOYCE MORENO - NATUREZA”! 🇧🇷 I know you’ll love them
I would really really love it if you react to The Raven That Refused to Sing by Steven wilson. Me and my father share a love for the album, and I've tried recommending it a couple of times already.
Smags may not speak Portuguese but he speaks vibes and that’s what matters

Great choice! Please consider doing "A Tábua de Esmeralda" by Jorge Ben next. It's a psychedelic samba-rock album from the same time.

It constitutes a musical and cultural sacrilege to hear the tracks of this work of art in interrupted parts.
