I'm so happy you both enjoyed this. The entire album is amazing. Milton Nascimento is from Brazil. So the language is Portuguese.

The late great Wayne Shorter (RIP). Beautiful song written by Milton Nascimento (vocals), with Herbie Hancock (piano), and Jay Graydon (guitar... remember him on Peg?), along with a band of Brazilian musicians. Great album that helped introduce me to 'world'.music... you guys scored.

The original version by Milton Nascimento is amazing. It’s on his album Minas. He’s the one singing here and he’s one of the greatest Brazilian singer songwriters with a lot of great tunes, frequently covered by other musicians too. The language is Portuguese.

Such a beautiful song. The late, great Wayne Shorter, his contributions to modern jazz music cannot be overstated enough. His music will live on. 🙏

A lament for the closure of a railway line - Maria Fumaca (smoking Mary). Ponta de Areia - Milton Nascimento
    "Ponta de Areia, last stop
From Bahia to Minas, natural road
Used to link Minas to the Port, to the sea.
    Railroad, they ordered the removal
The old engine driver, with his cap
He remembers the happy people that used to come for greet.
    Maria Fumaça doesn't sing anymore.
    Flowers for the girls.
    Windows and backyards.
A scream - a "ouch" - on the empty square.
Forgotten houses. Widows at the portals.

So many great players came out of Weather Report, and Wayne was a mainstay of their music. I also love Josef Zawinul's solo catalog, jazz meets world music. And Jaco Pastorius needs no introduction. Weather Report and Return to Forever were two of the best jazz fusion bands and opened many doors. Thanks for playing this!

Let's not forget the groundbreaking music of The Tony Williams Lifetime that featured John McLaughlin, Alan Holdsworth, Larry Young, Alan Pasqua, Jack Bruce, and Ron Carter.

His playing on Miles Davis' "in a silent way" was some of the nicest sax I ever heard. A really exceptional musician.

More Weather Report and Wayne Shorter. His solo on 'Aja' (Steely Dan) is monumental.

It's in Brazilian Portuguese so not really "native" but many percussive and wind instruments on the album are.

I am so glad you found Wayne Shorter! He is the one of the greatest of his generation and a gateway to some of the greatest music of all time. Please look into more Weather Report and Pat Metheny - much the same sound and incredible musicianship. Thanks again for venturing into such a range of great music!

Great song, by a great player & writer. My knowledge and understanding is so small compared to Shorter's talent and output, I don't know what to say. I can only say I wasn't really a jazz fan at all when I got my hand's on Best of Wayne Shorter The Blue Note Years, and it was just a jaw dropping bunch of music. Maybe not greatest reaction material, but is beautiful sampler of some of the best of the best, from one peak part of his career. But maybe you can't go wrong sampling his whole career either. Kind of a stunning talent.

The first few moments of this, which I've never heard before, mad me think of George Duke's 'Brazilian Love Affair' album. Probably that is because of the vocals of Milton Nascimento.

Esperanza Spalding does a nice version on her album. Kinda odd though. It's sounds so happy if you don't know Portuguese, but when you read the meaning it's pretty sad.
You were mentioning you didn't know what it meant while I was writing, but you can goggle interpretations.

If you enjoyed Milton Nascimento's contribution to this track, consider checking out "Clube da Esquina", the 1972 double LP from Milton and Lô Borges (and friends). It's sometimes described - inaccurately, but well-meaningly - as the Brazilian equivalent of The Beatles' White Album. A melodic, funky, endlessly listenable masterwork.

At first I was wondering if there was cussing disguised as tenor falsetto. Definitely interesting and a different detour. Nice.

A shame more people don't appreciate this. Not really Shorter's most accessible. Weather Report were a lot more popular. Play Borland or Black Market. Wild stuff.

Esperanza Spalding did an awesome version of this classic Milton Nasciemento song, better than this one, I reckon. Check out her out, she's an amazing young American double (and E-) bass player, singer, arranger and composer; listen to songs like: Ponta de Areia, I Know You Know, Precious, Radio Song, Why We Speak, and many many more... An exceptional artist!
