  • Hello and welcome to my channel
    Today I take you through a step by step procedure on how to troubleshoot, replace and clean your fuel injector for your outboard engine.
    Problem
    Earlier this year I had a contamination issue in my built in gas tank and I suspect the debris has made itself through the fuel filters and ultimately clogged one of my fuel injectors.
    Prior to replacing my fuel injectors I've replaced the fuel filter, replaced fuel lines from the old grey style with the lining that tends to deteriorate and cause issues overtime and all 4 spark plugs in attempt to solve my throttle/lack of speed issue. Due to lack of speed my boat was unable to plane.
    Ultimately I narrowed it down to the fuel injectors. Prior to this I booked an appointment at the marine shop for an inspection on my outboard to solve the problem but there was a 3 week wait time which prompted me to try and solve the problem myself as I'm an avid angler and need to be on the water asap; after all the fish are biting! lol
    Amidst research and chats in outboard forums. It was suggested that I may have an issue with my fuel injectors. I then ask a few marine shops for a quote on how much it would be for fuel injectors. I was told $270 per fuel injector on parts alone!
    This prompted me even more to try and find another solution. After further research I found the solution and I hope this video will help you solve your problem and at the same time save you time and money. This can also be a great addition to your preventative maintenance as its easy to do and will definitely add more efficiency to your outboard performance

    Hey thanks for this video. My F115 was running rough with no power at one point this Summer and I had it fixed in no time with your video. And those injectors on Amazon are awesome. They are one hell of a deal for four of them. Now I have three spares in case another one bites the dust. I never suspected a bad injector because the Yamaha software didn't show any problems with the injectors, yet one was completely dead. I just subscribed to your channel for more awesome videos. Good fishing and tight lines!

    well done, thanks for sharing, $50 for four vs roughly $1000 for four, $250 for one, absolute insanity, hopefully the quality of the cheaper in price ones will not be lacking, its always good when you can do the work yourself, TH-cam has been a great resource for me for boat and engine maintenance, learned how to fix my tilt and trim which had a couple dead orings that wouldnt allow the tilt to move the outboard full up or down , and also learned to troubleshoot low power in my 115 ELPTO 2+2 outboard finding that 2 ignition coils were suspect, same process as you disconnecting the injectors in this video, while the engine is running disconnect the spark plug wires one at a time and when it doesnt change the sound of the motor you've found a faulty one, and replacing them, voila it was like having a brand new outboard again, being able to fix your own stuff instead of getting gouged at the marina or boat store can save you a ton, most of the maintenance stuff is relatively simple, just need sockets and wrenches and a little elbow grease, lastly if you are finding it hard to find seals, orings, etc find an industrial seal company in your city etc and you'll find most of those seals they'll only charge you a nominal fee, basically something like 2-5$, basically a penny cash transaction for them, i use Fluidseal AB, and Hi-Tech Seals, here in Edmonton for example, anyway great stuff keep up the good work

      Hi Mike! So far, so good. I know exactly what you mean. If I can work on it, then I will. I simply can't get myself to bring any issues to the service shops knowing I can do it myself. You're definitely right. Most things are achievable with time, effort, and regular tools. The knowledge gained is priceless. Breakdowns or issues come up on the regular in every outting, and that knowledge can be the difference from having a good day or a bad day.
      The good thing about those injectors is that I now have spares. They are relatively easy to replace, even in non ideal settings like asea. Ask me how I know? 😅
      It's tough times out there economically. We know boating and fishing is an expensive hobby. Preparation is key 🔑 and I simply enjoy tinkering and learning.
      There's other maintenance videos that I want to make. Yt is an excellent resource when it comes to this, and it feels great to contribute and help out other boaters.
      Thanks for stopping by Mike! Hope you're still fishing, tightlines, and happy boating. 🙂🛠🚤🎣🐟

      Awesome! I'm super glad I was able to help😊
      I would like to add some info.
      In the video, I mentioned that if debris has made it all the way to your injectors (last point of fuel delivery), then you must check your fuel system. From your gas quality, fuel filters, water separator, and high pressure pump (also has a screen filter, also known as VST).
      Still, I'm glad you're able to get it up and running and have saved yourself cash and downtime. I've been wanting to make a follow-up video to this fix as I found that hidden filter in the VST unit, which involves in-depth deconstruction to get to it but very easy to do!
      I also changed all my fuel lines as I didn't know how old they were and if they were deterioting inside. In short, I meticulously went through the whole fuel system.
      Thanks again for the feedback, tightlines and happy boating!!

    Great video, and I have done this procedure the same way....I do have something I'd like to add, and take it as just my 2 cents. The coils in these injectors are fragile and yes they work on 12 volts, however the voltage is regulated from the ECM (usually), NOT straight from the battery. When doing this procedure don't use a full size battery, instead use a simple 9volt or in most cases even a size D flashlight battery (yes, 1.5 volts will be enough to activate the injectors coil). This is MUCH closer to the typical amperage of the circuit. When using a full size battery, you're essentially offering up to 500 to 800 amps of supply current. It is possible to literally melt an injector in your hand. Being that gasoline or cleaners are as flammable this should speak for itself. Again, in no way am I criticising, or correcting your well made video, just offering advice that I personally feel is very valuable to this procedure. Thanks, and tight liines.

      Once you get it going, as I mentioned in the video. There is absolutely something clogging up ur injectors. This will remedy the injectors being clogged but eventually you will have to solve why debris is getting through all the way to the injector which is the last point of delivery.
      Regardless this will definitely save u some time and money. Could even save your trip from being ruined. I had this issue mid trip and swapped it on the fly and had a great rest of the day.

    I’ve had to replace the injectors twice on my Merc 115 - any thoughts on how to prevent this from happening? My boat does not get used very much so I think that’s the problem. Would it help to run all the gas out of the line? Maybe I should install a shutoff valve on the fuel line..?

    • @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace
      @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Roger thanks for watching and leaving a comment.
      Unfortunately, infrequent use will cause fuel separation. Hence water and oxidation and other not so pleasant results for your outboard.
      Now to prevent breakdown issues
      1-add additives like mercury quick clean to your fuel. I've also read to leave the tank as full as possible to prevent excessive moisture
      2- change fuel filters often
      3- keep your used fuel injector spares, clean them and have them ready for swaps (makes it cheaper rather than going to the mechanic)
      4- recirculate your fuel with an external fuel pump and add inline filters to filter debris
      5- if leaving unused for an excessive amount of time perhaps empty the tank into a jerry can and use the gas for your vehicle or add additives to prevent separation.
      6- join facebook outboard repair groups to ask for more ideas
      7- use premium ethanol free gas
      8-empty out and replace fuel water separators as required
      I know Its a lot but it's the price we pay as boaters I suppose. These are just a few suggestions and I'm sure there will more I've missed. Tip #6 is most suggested.

      Hello Morten from Denmark!
      Sorry, but not sure of that issue. Where is the noise coming from? I know there's an adjustment on bottom leg shaft that links to the power head. Perhaps you can adjust that? You might have to remove your lower leg to access it. Perhaps it's not a bearing, but you're partially engaged in gear and just need an adjustment?

      Can always do a clean like I showed in the vid. Might just be plugged up then their basically new again.
      For peace of mind I suppose a new one is best but as shown in the vid even if it's new it could still be defective.
      I got these from amazon as the quotes are unbelievably expensive at the marine shop so perhaps try there. Aswell these injectors would be the same for auto parts. That being said there could be the same injector for a car and can just get the injectors from them (click on the amazon link and you will see its prompted as the same for some cars). I hope that helps

      @@bbtvfishingismyhappyplace …yes, that’s the number given to me by the mechanic that’s going to install them for me. He’s doing the work on the side, so I’m responsible for getting the parts. Thanks for responding 👍🏼😀

    I hear a very slight clicking on two of my injectors and no fluid is coming out. The other two injectors are clicking much louder and spraying a good pattern. They all ohm out the same around 12.8-13. Could two be bad?

      Coil looks good, sounds like it's clogged! Buy a other set, install it. Clean the originals and use as spares. Good luck Preston! Let me know how you do

      @@bbtvfishingismyhappyplaceyour video was a big help. I’m a little stumped I got each of the injectors to spray one time only and now they won’t click at all with a battery. Other two are perfect and back in the boat! Wondering what I should do with the two I suspect are faulty

      @PrestonBrungard I recommend to keep the 2 used ones as spares and install brand new ones. For how much they cost and the hassle on the water, you might aswell.

    Great video, but sometimes it's not the injector, electrical could be the problem no power coming to plug in or wiring harness, find an injector that works and replace, if not working, there is no power

    • @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace
      @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep! You're absolutely right. That's a possible issue as well. Though, I feel that in most cases, it's a dirty fuel issue. Great tip Thomas!

    I have the same motor with what seems like a rough idle. First time I took the boat out it got on plane once with no issue then acted as though it was starving for fuel. I went through the entire fuel system including testing and cleaning fuel injectors. Checked and adjusted tps sensor also no difference. Ideas?

    • @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace
      @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I do! You need to check ur Vst! There's a filter in there that can get clogged.
      Like I mentioned in the video if your injectors are clogged it basically means your fuel was contaminated at one point. Somewhere in your fuel path, debris will accumulated.
      Have to remove the manifold to access it but once u open it up you will a float and a fuel pump. Under the fuel pump there's a screen filter that you clear. It basically starves your motor st high demand but fine at lower demand.
      I would check there! Let me know how u make out. Was intending to make a video about it but didn't want to take the whole thing apart to repeat the process. There are YT videos out there tho! Good luck 👍

      @@bbtvfishingismyhappyplace that’s what I was saying it’s all been through only thing I found was just a little bit of blockage on the high pressure pump filter the rest of the fuel system was spotless. I drained all the fuel that I emptied through coffee filters and found nothing.

      @@bbtvfishingismyhappyplace I’m going to put it in the water again to test for power but the idle is still crappy. Lift pump is pumping great also. No difference running from a separate tank bypassing filter housings no change in idle or off idle stumble.

    • @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace
      @bbtvfishingismyhappyplace  ปีที่แล้ว

      Are those new fuel injectors?
      Maybe they're not getting a signal, or the coil in them are no good. There is also such a thing as partial blockage on those fuel injectors. They may keep engine running, but idle will be more rough.
      Do u have proper fuel pressure? There's a fuel guage u can attach to the rack that holds the fuel injectors. Looks like fitting for tires.
      Are your lines all tight? I've also changed all my hoses to the black ones.
      Sorry I keep editing it. Darn auto spell

      @@bbtvfishingismyhappyplace yeah I cleaned the injectors they patterned good. I have not checked the pressure at the rail under laid but I have out of the water and was fine. I’m fairly familiar with outboards just don’t have any equipment to test modules or sensors.
