    Watched every minute of this Matt, i live my track day dreams vicariously through you ! Great video, very interesting to learn how action at one part of the track can impact you pace and lines 2 or 3 corners later. I watch MotoGP and i hear about this all the time, now i understand it much better ! Imn sure you'll hit the 1:18's this summer Matt

      Sorta like how I live my competent wrenching and motorcycle mechanic dreams through you!?
      This is the fun part about club racing that I've only learned about after getting involved in it. And it's given me so much more appreciation for everybody who has done this (past and present). Every person has their own story. Most of us have realized we're never going to make it to a national circuit--but we all want to do well. We all have goals. Every last person, even if they're not going to say it out loud. But every person that makes it out there has put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into their bikes and their riding. And it's cool to watch it.
      I've been waiting for the @true-moto-resto first track day video this year. How much longer do I have to wait!?

      @@matttriestodothingsjeez, no pressure LOL, eventually I’ll get my KTM Rc8 out on a track day. I’m 4 + hours from a track so I just have to make an effort. I may also need a one piece suit (?) not sure what the rules are. Have to look at it seriously

      @@true-moto-resto Peer pressure isn't always bad :-P. You know I'm just messing with you though. If we find a spot that's less than 8 hours between the two of us, maybe I can meet you there. There's potentially a couple logistical issues with my bike no longer being street legal and registered that might throw a wrench into that though.
      Every org is different, but most of them allow 2-piece for novice group. Definitely verify beforehand. That being said, a 1-piece is more comfortable on the bike. You're more than fit enough to be able to jump in and out of a one piece every couple of sessions too. We'll cross that bridge when we get there in 2025.

      If my experience can be extrapolated, I promise you less than 2/3 of the people that own these expensive devices realize you can even do this. I didn't until I mentioned to a coworker that used to race boats that I had an AIM device. That's when he started going in on asking me about "best calculated theoretical lap" and a bunch of other things. I thought it was just a lap timer. Now the shitty battery life makes a lot more sense. There is more computing power in this thing than the Apollo 11 crew had to land on the moon.
      I'm generally a technology curmudgeon and think people get way too into numbers, and suspension settings, and yadda yadda yadda. But there's no denying there is value in being able to pinpoint parts of the track where I'm deficient. This is a great tool to do that.

    Great job putting together another video that helps riders new to the sport get a better understanding of a complex subject. Glad to hear you’ve finally got front brakes and a throttle that doesn’t stick! They might come in handy when chasing your 1:18…lol

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hah, thanks man. I wish I understood the subject matter better, but I thought it was cool to look into the data. Legit I thought the AIM was just a laptimer. My coworker asked me if I'd downloaded the data and started looking for my "best theoretical lap". I said "I have no idea what you're talking about". He told me about all the data my fancy laptimer was actually tracking so I started digging into it.
      The new cables will be good on the quest for 18's. Thanks again for stopping by that weekend. I love getting to talk bikes with you and just hanging out at the track .I know during the moment it can sometimes be frustrating if things aren't going exactly how I want them to, but then getting to hang out with you and other people at the track brings me back to realizing race weekends are the best weekends of my year--regardless of how I'm finishing.

      Being an avid trackday rider, I agree that we need to realize how fortunate we are to be able to do what we do. Hanging out with you at the races is always a good time and gives me a lot of insight into the sport. I’ll be renting an AIM lap timer and getting some data coaching from Farrell at BFR on 9/11. See you there!

    Super interesting video and really cool to see the progress you’re making. I’m also attempting to use my lap timer data as a tool to identify my largest opportunities for improvement. Going to try using a Python script to process the .csv export so i can have maximum flexibility - we’ll see how that goes lol

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks man. I can follow your plan all the way through the .csv export, but you'll probably lose me once you get to the Python. My "Automate the Simple Stuff with Python" book is still sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust, hah. I'm a bit of a curmudgeon to a lot of the data and electronics stuff, but it was fascinating to jump into the lap data from the AIM and I just find myself clicking around through it for hours.
      I just re-watched your most recent upload from the July round and (for better or worse) your riding style is the closest to mine I've seen. Your turn 4 through turn 6 is very similar to mine. Guess I'm not that unique. Funny thing from that race is I was listening to Kenny call it on the loudspeaker and he was talking about someone missing turn 7 and just kinda driving straight forward into the grass. That didn't make sense to me just hearing over the loudspeaker. Watching your onboard... now it all makes sense.

      And yeah i agree - we’ve definitely got a similar riding style, at least at blackhawk. So whenever you get into the 18’s at BHF you’ll have to share your secrets cuz it will probably help me too lol

    I lost the front pushing up a hill yesterday but caught it in time and throttled out. :D Still not sure how I got out of it, it was kinda bizarre. And some of the supersport riders were showing me some of the corners you do A V instead of a normal line, it was pretty interesting - he was saying that you take like a center line into those corners that you don't usually make up time on so no one slips past you on the inside. Wish we had the same track nearby!

      Front end slide certainly makes you feel alive, doesn't it!? Luckily I've only really had that experience on one weekend.
      I didn't talk about it in this video, but the July Ultralightweight race at 10AM turned out to be a dry race. We were first out. It was still pouring at 8AM. Every person on the grid had wets on. We all guessed wrong. That was my first time riding a truly dry track on wets. Super weird experience and I was slow as hell. The rear is so wiggly!
      Interesting about the center line vs. optimal. That's definitely another situational benefit in making yourself more difficult to pass in certain situations.
      There's gotta be a track somewhere in the middle we'll both end up at some time! Actually, more likely it'll be closer to you since you have better weather (if i'm remembering southeast correctly).

      Road America is cool. It's a spectacle. Barber is cool. It's a spectacle. The track you need to hit is PittRace. It's so fucking cool. For me it's in a tier of its own.
      That being said, I'm praying club racing comes back to Road America because I'd love to do it. And I'm trying to plan either 2025 or 2026 to run enough AHRMA rounds to do the finale at Barber.

      @@DylonND The esses are the most fun part of any track I've run. If my mic picked up my voice, you'd hear me yelling multiple times about how much fun they are. Turn 14, the blind, off-camber turn is the scariest but most rewarding turn I've ever taken. I've hit it properly maybe 3x ever, but when you do it's awesome. The elevation change between exit turn 3 and exit turn 6 is huge. The track also has a ton of grip in the wet, so if it rains it's not like your day is going to completely suck. The facility is top notch as well. Basically, it's just awesome.
      MotoAmerica had been going there up until this year. They switched to Mid-Ohio. The rumor was they weren't invited back by the track since the MotoA haulers and stuff just kept destroying the property. idk if that's factual, but that's the rumour I heard.
      I actually did make it down to Barber for a track day this April! Got 6 sessions before I blew my freeze plug. That facility is pristine. I enjoyed the track a lot. I'd love to actually get to race it someday--hopefully I can commit to a few AHRMA rounds in the coming years so I could actually qualify to run the Finale there at Barber. I hear it's like 50,000 people and just an insane experience. Barber was the second best track I've run, but Pitt I'd put in a tier higher track-wise. Personal opinion, obviously.

    You've seen my results and riding so take what im saying with plenty of scepticism.
    @ 15:10 you talk about not being afraid of going deep/hard into turns and you're shitty on exits. Do you think this turn charging could be causing the poor exits? This sounds, from my chump level, like a "fast in slow out" situation when the mantra is usually "slow in fast out".
    Could it be worth a few laps duing practice or a track day, or a "race that doesnt matter" to try slowing a bit more, and/or a bit sooner. Then getting a better exit and drive; especially with the data logging provided by the lap timer. You might be able to find the cross over in "total speed" and strike the best balance.
    Just my "never finished better than last place" opinion though so consider with scepticism.

    • @matttriestodothings
      @matttriestodothings  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@g3yost absolutley valid criticism and it's actually something we've been talking about quite a bit at the practice day at Pitt Race today.
      The answer is I'm not sure. I may need to commit some time to "lighter, longer" on the brakes to keep up roll speed. It's the slow right hand turns that open up into full throttle sections that I am weakest.

      @@g3yost I think my issue has more to do with allowing myself to find the slowest point of the corner and actually getting slow enough to set direction. It only takes a tenth of a second, but I made some changes in my final race at PittRace that allowed me to go quite a bit quicker despite feeling quite a bit slower in the long, slow >120° right handers.
