    11 years later.... This video helps me the most. I was crying last night because the videos I watched did not answer my question: how to find electrons and use a different example that does not focus only on Hydrogens shell.

    Thank you so much. This is so clear and concise! My professor (smart guy) nerded out and launched into the physics behind electromagnetism force and how that relates to electron configuration. It was too much, too fast, and just scary. This is perfect, and simple, and clear.

    Hey dude, you are correct, it does have 10 electrons, but the type of element is based on the number of protons, not electrons. Since it still has 12 protons, it's still magnesium. In order to be neon, it can only have 10 protons. Not a bad question at all bro. Keep up the studies and you be getting this in no time. Best wishes in your studies. Peace.

    Sweet Question JoAnna. This is happening as you suggested, because the elements are bonding. Some will lose electrons, and those electrons go to the ones that gain electrons. Nice job! I see you're a muscian. I plan to check out some of your music :)
