    Hey Nathan hope you'll get a break from all the rain, at least it's not snow. As far as insulation, another ybr channel is building a house and the contractor on exterior walls is spraying 2" of closed cell to seal the outside than the pink insulation to keep heat in.

    I used closed cell insulation in my wood shop (24' x 30') here in Northern Ohio. I put 2" on the walls and 3" in the ceiling. It has been fine. My mini split has no trouble keeping up and it has hardly affected my electric bill.

    Use thin layer of closed cell sprayfoam. Then cover it with stone wool for fireproofing and sound insulation. That way you get to kill the possibility of condensation and also not waste money.

    If I remember correctly friends, most heat loss happens at the ceiling. That does not mean you do not have to insulate your walls but, more insulation in the ceiling will improve heat loss?

    • @hardwareshomestead8959
      @hardwareshomestead8959 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You are correct Dave. 70% through the ceiling. 20% through doors and windows and 10% through the walls

    • @sidorgeorge
      @sidorgeorge 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you stop airflow from your walls and rim joists, then you have effectively stopped the cold air infiltration, which causes the stack effect. Yes, you need reasonable insulation in the ceiling also. But I think the 70% is misleading. You could insulation your ceiling to R50, but if you have leaky walls/rim joists, your house is going to be cold regardless.

    You have to be careful on doing "flash and batt" insulation, which is what you were wondering about. You can trap a lot of moisture in the batts. Personally I wouldn't do it.

  • @stevem83
    @stevem83 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Good stuff. Love your videos. As a former spray foam salesman for a spray foam company, 2” of closed cell foam is all you need in them walls. Adding fiberglass wouldn’t really add any insulating properties at this point. Focus on mitigating the heat loss through the roof/attic at this point. My two cents. Do with it as you like. Keep up the good work

      In Texas this would be all wrong. Don’t know the weather where he is. Guessing it’s a mix. We only worry about keeping the heat out in Texas and would want to fill up somehow to avoid condensation. Flash and Batt is common just to get something in there, and you would do no moisture barrier on the inside. We don’t add the batting to help insulate but for other properties.

    Hey Nathan, great stuff, simple applications. Is your goal "insulation" or "vapor barrier", this would be a simple application of 2 cans for all the cracks and couple of 1/2" foam panels, glued and seal taped, as a vapor barrier. Sealing the heat transfer (reflective foam board), to reverse the radiation facing the wall. Considering that you may not add a finish to the wall or are you planning on insulating the rest of the shop. Noticing the OSB wall behind you. Thanks

    • @nickford5549
      @nickford5549 ปีที่แล้ว

      Radiant insulation needs a gap to be effective

    • @frankarmstrong7083
      @frankarmstrong7083 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@nickford5549 The air gap is provided by layering the reflective insulboard as the finish on the studs. The gap is already provided by the stud 3.5" of width, from the sheet metal to the back of the insulation. Closed cell insulboard acts like a moisture barrier on the back side. The spray foam has no air gap now if the wall is finished. If the sheet metal is slippery or has debris on the inner surface the foam may not stick for long in freezing weather unless encapsulated.

    Maybe somebody else commented about this I'm not sure, but I cut strips of Styrofoam insulation, put them in between the studs, and then spray foamed the cracks, I felt like that was cheaper than buying it by the can, and had very similar results. Not trying to critique you just saying what I did. It was a lot cheaper for me than buying a lot of spray foam cans which are very expensive and was faster.

    • @sidorgeorge
      @sidorgeorge 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you have easy access, then your method works fine. But when you have finished basement ceiling, then this method allows you to simply cut small holes in the ceiling near the ends, and spray foam each joist. Trying to get rigid insulation in those cases, or in cases where you have maybe an inch gap between the board and the rim joist, is very difficult.

    If you do this again they sell a diy spray kit called frost pack. Comes with two refrigerant tanks full of 2 part. A good tip also. Spray foam is great but really isn’t the best choice in most applications. It’s really good at air sealing. If you want the best insulation flash the walls 1” thick and blow in cellulose material. Great r value and good on sound
