There's a group of people bringing scythe technology to India. The small farms are still using Sickles to harvest. The farmers were *amazed* at the time saving and ease of use, talking about how much time it would save them for other chores or to do things with their children or families. Just really awesome, sharing something so archaic that can still make a difference in people's lives. They're not just selling scythe to these folks, either. They're teaching them how to make their own, how to maintain them and the tall harvest attachment.
@@Rynewulf Scythes aren't as common as you may think. Lots of regions(usually rice harvesting regions, India, Southeast asia, Japan etc) didn't use Scythes historically(or it wasn't too common), perhaps due to the different harvesting requirements and conditions of rice. But then idk why scythe wasn't used in North India where wheat was usually grown. I'm more surprised that Brits (or other Europeans) never thought of introducing a tool like scythe especially considering they exported grains from here. I guess since lots of cheap labor was much more easily available here and work got done anyway, no one bothered.
@@Rynewulf > They sound uncontacted by the world or something It's because you(and most non-indians in general) have not much idea about Indian history or the country in general and more often than not already have generally negative preconceptions of the country. The difference is the bloke with the brushcutter can keep that up for an 8 hour workday. It's not terribly visible here, but a harness carries the weight of the brushcutter, the handles are only for controlling the side to side motion. It requires very little effort to use. The bloke with the scythe looked to be slowing down towards the end of this small patch. As for folks debating "string trimmer" vs. "weedeater" vs. "weed whacker"; this is a proper brushcutter. Gilvids no they are right actually. Grass is still a living thing, and as such has natural defenses to aid those surrounding it. That’s why it’s best to cut downwind when mowing the lawn or otherwise, because then you’ll just get a much bigger crapload of pollen, which as it turns out- plants use it as a deterrent to the thing attacking. Well take a mustard weed for example. You cut one down, it releases its pollen, which alerts the surrounding weeds to do the same- next thing you know, there’s a cloud of itchy pollen in the air that also stimulates allergies and such. Doesn’t bother everyone- but it’s a useful fact to utilize for those of us that do.

godsadog because weed whackers are are maid for detail work not this you would use a riding mower for this and that would get the job don't in a few seconds plus the grass would actually be level unlike what the scythe did in the video
+jphorn1223 A riding mower would be fucked within five feet of that. You'd have to hit it with either a scythe or a heavy-duty weedwacker first in order to reduce the density and then mow it to finish the job. It's not perfectly level due to the motion of your swing but, again, if the intention is to mow it it likely won't matter.
+The1rust It depends on the engine of the lawn mower, but the lawn mower (most likely) would't have a wide enough deck to get all of that in one go, so it would have to turn around to get the rest, a sickle bar mower or brush hog would get that in one go, but brush hogs are meant to take on taller grass and brush, and sickle bar mowers are meant to cut grass even taller than that for hay.

I had a stilh one who was a little bit heavy but very powerful and not like this one in the video...
Scythes have the cool factor and less noise, but I think part of that extra time at the end could have been used to sharpen the scythe as that counts as part of the time it takes to use a scythe too. There's probably some maintenance on the brushcutter too but I bet it wouldn't be as much time as sharpening.
Fuel, oil, blades i would guess at least. A scythe has of course to be kept clean and properly sharped (no grinding). I would say that preperation doesn't make any meaningful difference so the other factors (noise, terrain etc.) are more important.
@@soulflakes510 plus there are really solid electric ones now, so you don't even need to worry about fuel, oil, or engine maintenance, just battery charge. And they last a while, too.
@@Motoboo_Marine The electric ones are stupid heavy. I used to do this for a living, and I'm not convinced I'd want to hump one up and down the dozens of acres I used to have to cut. Oh--not to mention that the batteries wouldn't last nearly long enough to cut dozens of acres...
It's just not true that any particular type of physique is required to use a scythe. If you want evidence of this, watch Peter Vido's daughter (then 14 or 15) mowing a field in the TH-cam video titled: 'Austrian Style Scythe'. She was skinny young woman then. A perfect demonstration that it is technique, and not muscle, that is required. I agree that a brushcutter is the easier option, but I'll leave the viewer to decide which tool 'wins'.
Dave Oxford it's all about endurance. That sythe would take a lot more energy to use and the weed Wacker can go for much longer even if it's a bit slower
Spencer Lininger boi its doesnt even take that much strength unless the sycthe was dull a shit. If you can run 1-2 miles then you should be able to use it with out get very tired of then taking a breath or two even pluck weeds are harder but not super tiring
CocoEarmuffs well that guy looks pretty tired. I know he's going pretty fast but it's still easier to use a weed wacker. But this is why we have lawn mowers. Because they are going to mow way quicker than either of these guys.
Great job! I just received my scythe and can’t wait to start using it. I’m so tired of loud weedwackers. They are great for edging of course but to limit it and the noise is great!
I like how they gave him a weed wacker instead of a riding/push mower because they knew that would just fuck the scythe in the ass too hard with no lube.
both tools are made for something else. I still use my scythe(s) to cut grass for my animals ( they don't want to eat the grass cut by machines ). I use a brushcutter to clean around the house, close to fences and to clear land that was not used for years and it's full of brushes and young trees. You can't use the scythe there. The brushcutter also shreds the grass a bit more while the scythe cuts the grass clean and deposits it by the side. And the guy with the scythe could not do the same for a few hours while I could use the brush cutters 12 hours/day and have a mild trigger finger ache. I find these tools complementary and when the other fails you always have the other.
@@foshoucitron4595 the more the grass is cut the harder it is to eat it for animals, the grass (most of them) have sharp edges some of the grass even have sharp micro spikes , there are some grass that you can get a cut in a finger if you twist it around between the fingers. If the grass is cut in to many little pieces the animals eating it will feel unpleasant tingling, they might cut their jaw while eating. So thats why they dont like to eat a grass that is cut in to many pieces. Also gas residue might add to that although the cutting process is clean it still leaves some oil or gasoline smell.
well the brushcutter is a fine point tool for doing specific narrow bits of grass if the competition took place on a sloped hill and included narrow bits between rocks - then the brushcutter would completely OWN it this competition was totally stacked in the scythe's favor
I like how they gave him a weed wacker instead of a riding/push mower because they knew that would just fuck the scythe in the ass too hard with no lube.
Matt Seymour how is that surprising at all? A scythe is made for this particular job, while the trimmer is made for reaching spots the scythe (or a mower for that matter) can't reach. This is like comparing a screwdriver to a hammer.
This is neat but a more apt comparison would be a pushing lawn mower. Nobody in their right mind would use a weed whacker/bush cutter to trim that area of lawn.
I think I spotted 2 mistakes the brush cutter guy made: 1) he should’ve took off his shirt for aerodynamics and 2) there should’ve been two beer cans attached to his helmet for hydration. Those two changes… completely different outcome imho.
To be frank, I object to the head start the scythe got. If time starting the gas powered machine is to be included, how about honing the blade time for a scythe? They cut at about the same rate, but the scythe had a big lead. You can also fit much larger heads onto a brush cutter for light grass like that that will get the job done faster. Steel heads are for thick brush and undergrowth, plastic or wire whips are better for trimming long grass.

Oh, hellow fellow recommended user! I saw that as well.

Scythe sharpened like a razor blade, incredible technique and the guy is an absolute unit. You need to have two of the those three points, no matter which ones. I don't and get tired after 3 to 4 cuts.

@Purple Emerald what makes you believe its a scream of pain? Do you think the same way about your hair?

Seen these comps before, someone set up a much longer piece of grass to cut, the scythe cutter was knackered and it had to be sharpened to finish, he took many breaks and drank lots of water but didn’t give up, the brush cutter made it look easy, it was even funnier when the farmer in the next field starting cutting grass with his ride on mower. First a lady with scythe now .. this ... Have we cracked the yt algorithm
Not really a fair comparison...
Well, both a gardening tools. But I see where you're coming from. The scythe doesnt require a startup, and is longer than a weed wacker
godsadog Actually I HAVE... and you mood is obviously isnt all that GAY... LOL
godsadog because weed whackers are are maid for detail work not this you would use a riding mower for this and that would get the job don't in a few seconds plus the grass would actually be level unlike what the scythe did in the video

If you had to work around rocks medium to large in size, the weed whacker would just be better. That being said, every tool has its use.

The next scythe video will be: how you wield a darkin scythe without being possessed.

Hi fellow WAN Show viewer. 😊
When you have unlocked all your abilities and still can't beat that last boss
TH-cam: why not recommend this 10 years later
Dave Oxford п
Spencer Lininger boi its doesnt even take that much strength unless the sycthe was dull a shit. If you can run 1-2 miles then you should be able to use it with out get very tired of then taking a breath or two even pluck weeds are harder but not super tiring
I rather do it with the scythe and save money on gas
CocoEarmuffs well that guy looks pretty tired. I know he's going pretty fast but it's still easier to use a weed wacker. But this is why we have lawn mowers. Because they are going to mow way quicker than either of these guys.
Great job!
I just received my scythe and can’t wait to start using it. I’m so tired of loud weedwackers. They are great for edging of course but to limit it and the noise is great!

Is weed whacking another term for edging?
@@gamerknownyes or strimming
both tools are made for something else.
Also gas residue might add to that although the cutting process is clean it still leaves some oil or gasoline smell.
well the brushcutter is a fine point tool for doing specific narrow bits of grass
if the competition took place on a sloped hill and included narrow bits between rocks - then the brushcutter would completely OWN it

That is surprising but its not really a fair competition as the Scythe has about 3 times as much cutting diamater than the brushcutter
So ... you're saying we need a 3meter blade for a strimmer.
I like the way you think.
Matt Seymour how is that surprising at all? A scythe is made for this particular job, while the trimmer is made for reaching spots the scythe (or a mower for that matter) can't reach.
This is like comparing a screwdriver to a hammer.
Scythe : literally is for cutting grass

To be frank, I object to the head start the scythe got. If time starting the gas powered machine is to be included, how about honing the blade time for a scythe? They cut at about the same rate, but the scythe had a big lead.
You can also fit much larger heads onto a brush cutter for light grass like that that will get the job done faster. Steel heads are for thick brush and undergrowth, plastic or wire whips are better for trimming long grass.
