You can use bridged adapter and choose the Network interface card. This way the VM requests the DNS server to provide a unique IP address that is different from HOST OS. Using the dedicated IP address of Kali VM you can connect through SSH from windows or within a network range ..

U did something wrong in between try to do all the process from first or the image file of Kali Linux must have not been selected properly in storage settings
If you have enabled 3D acceleration disable it . Or else try to create a new VM with 3D acceleration disabled. Then choose to install a XFCE Desktop environment.

This happened to me the first time I installed my kali, but all you have to do is delete that kali and start a new installation, hope this helps 👍
Did u enable 3D acceleration? if so delete the VM and reinstall the Kali Again without 3D Acceleration with XFCE Desktop..

after installing, after updating Kali, it rebooted and UPON reaching the GUI to login, I'm left and stucked on a blank screen and a blinking cursor

Try first letter in small of your user name
Make sure while typing the username or password, caps lock is not enabled.
