  • Becoming a nurse was always Kahla’s dream - it just took her a little longer than expected. She went to nursing school right out of high school, but her heart was not in it at the time. She left, decided to join the military, and completed eight years of active duty as a medic in the Air Force.
When she was ready to transition back into the profession, Kahla researched, applied to a few nursing programs, and was accepted into the Averett University Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program in Norfolk, Virginia. Her contract with the Air Force ended, and she was able to transition into being a full-time student. Even though she knew that becoming a nurse was going the be challenging, she was prepared for such circumstances thanks to her time in the military.
As a mom of two small children, it can seem heartbreaking to not spend as much time with them as one would want. But Kahla’s goal of finishing school in 16 months, becoming a nurse, and working 12-hour shifts three times a week keeps her motivated to continue her studies to one day work in labor and delivery.
The hands-on experience at clinicals is Kahla’s favorite part about the Averett ABSN program. Learning through real-world situations allowed her to assess her strengths and weaknesses and to identify what she needs to improve. Preparing for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) is also a priority at Averett, and Kahla says the ABSN program excels at setting up students with material and other resources to make sure they are ready to pass the licensure exam to become nurses.
