I met Karl Urban at a convention in 2009 a few months before Star Trek came out. I was only 15 and really shy, pretty much unable to speak - and Karl was SO lovely to me and really approachable and engaged in speaking to me. He was so kind and polite. Genuinely such a lovely human being as well as a top tier actor.

Yeah, I think it’s super underrated until now thankfully changed. It wasn’t until I looked it up and watch the boys that I realize he was in so much of my childhood, especially lord, of the rings and stuff.

No. He's one of those actors where the role will seem quality even if it isn't, just because of the way he plays it.

Karl Urban frowning even harder as Dredd during the middle part of the movie was some of the best face acting i've ever seen in any movie. The entire first half of the movie has the tone set of Dredd with his famous frown, and then the camera comes in close and he somehow frowns even harder. its amazing

The way he brings his chin forward for that iconic angry underbite is inhuman, it looks exactly like in the Bolland covers. I bet he was sore afterwards.
The fact that he mentions Anton Yelchin shows you what kind of guy he is. Actors get bad reps a lot of the time but there truly are some kind generous humans in the movie business and Karl's one of them.
It seems that you have to be good, must have luck and be wise in how to get important roles to get famous. Well I bet for many actors it's not even that much about the money or fame, bu more on interesting roles. I understand people like Harrison Ford who only plays at high gage but you also have to sell yourself as a top product in this buisness to keep on getting good roles in good movies. I've seen many no name actors do incredible stuff, but they just didn't fit for the big industry or just played in movies with low income. Karl is one of that guys who is dedicated to acting and makes good choises.
It’s a profession that attracts a lot of narcissists. Just makes the diamonds in the dross shine all the brighter, I suppose.
I remember he was on a news show when news of Anton death was out and they asked him for his opinion and you can tell he was hurt by the loss and after he answered the question respectfully the hosts go in cheer mode “ Let’s play a game”
This man doesn't get as much love as he deserves compared to many other actors. He's so good.

@@cookie80088 In my opinion, that's a kind of irony to him. I've seen people who did not realize he was in LotR. He disappears into his roles, so much so that his name was rarely a selling point of a movie.
I remember him as Vaako in The Chronicle of Riddick, too.
Everyone thinks EVERYONE doesn't get the props they deserve. Tune in, people. You're all saying the same thing, which means he IS getting the love he deserves.
Karl is one of those rare actors that Never gives you a bad performance no matter what the character or movie! His McCoy nails the exasperation that Deforest Kelly portrayed dealing with Kirk and Spock.
I felt so bad for such a good cast having to carry some parts of those movies…

@@thestarseeker8196 Funny thing is, I dont actually care for the plot of any of the movies in that trilogy. That being said, I will still rewatch them purely because so many great actors are in them and the action is top notch. You have to give Abrams credit, those movies look amazing.
@@BagOCheetos For me there is stuff on “Into Darkness” in particular where I was just aghast at how excellent and how Star Trek it was. Really loved the first half despite it not making a lick of sense for Cumberbatch to be playing Khan. But then my problem is, it feels like that film, and the others, go off after some amazing scene and do something that totally ruins the momentum, or the feel, or the story itself.
@@thestarseeker8196 Unfortunately it is the direction of many of these film franchises to do "expectation subversion" instead of just knocking out good material. But that isnt the director or actors fault, it is the fault of the writers, producers, and studios. You can almost set your watch to how frequently bad writing is produced into film. Lol.
His scene in LotR: Return of the King extended cut when he finds Eowyn “dead” almost always makes me cry. The grief/anguish carries so smoothly and instantly. His face. Ugh. It’s agony to the emotions.
I loved his character. Fierce to no end but he loves his family.
Too bad they didn't do it like the book. Where he finds her body during the battle(not after like the movie), then he turns that terrible grief into complete rage and rides off to slay the Orcs & Haradrim.
@@Lone-wolf-1982- And THAT’S when he/they start chanting “Death, death, death” as their war cry in the book. I adore the movies but am glad to have read the books first. Jackson’s casting has stuck in my head canon though.
@@Darkstar-se6wcyes. I read the books first. Back in the 90s. Overall, Jackson and his crew did a fantastic job. I doubt I'll see another epic like his LOTR in my lifetime. I'm very happy they made it. And Karl Urban was perfect for Eomer.

Some disappointments in the translation, sure, but to this day I still get goosebumps seeing the Rohirrim crest the hill at daybreak, and then Theoden's call to battle. Perfect canon? Nah. But it's still epic, and it captures the feel perfectly. I honestly don't think anyone can or will ever touch what Jackson brought to film
You as Eomer was so epic, with little screen time and your lines of “Not Alone, Rohirm” “To the king” made me want to charge down that hill at Helms Deep

I met Karls Dad once (at his shoe shop in Wellington) and he was SOOOO proud of him. He asked us if we were LOTR fans and then he showed our family his photo albums of Karl on all his movies/shows. Such a lovely man, no wonder Karl is also!

I love how everyone who worked on Lord of the Rings basically all say "nothing like that will ever happen again, and it was incredible." I think a lot of it is because it was before the age of "actors on a green screen," so a lot of the actors were in the experience together. The Lord of the Rings trilogy was probably the largest film project ever made that was shot mostly with practical effects that required actual people to be on actual sets.
The Lord of the Rings was amazing thanks to all of the prosthethics and practical effects. I have no idea why Peter Jackson then decided to ditch all of that for horribly fake looking CGI in the Hobbit series.
@@Intranetusa There's actually a variety of reasons for that, chief of them being that the Hobbit was supposed to be 2 movies and was directed by Guilermo del Toro at first, who left the project. Jackson came in to take over, but they simply didn't have the time to make all the practical stuff and make it look good. Lord of the Rings had years of preproduction under Jackson, a luxury he didn't have for the Hobbit.
Yeah, it's a very different approach to film making, we might not see it again.
Hobbiton is an actual place you can visit because they made it.
The crossbows are actual crossbows they made.
They just don't do it that way now.
One of the requests (or requirements) that the landowners of where Hobbiton was filmed, had, was the set be real so that people could visit.
In saying that, some places such as Minas Tirith were CGI'ed
@@Darquesse24601 Minas Tirith was also a huge set. There’s a detailed video about it the DVDs. I remember they mentioned it was the flagship set that they used to impress anyone important that happened to visit New Zealand while they were filming. Obviously it wasn’t a huge tower, so they used different angles and areas to represent different levels of the in-movie city.
He was also in Chronicles of Riddick, which I also consider one of his most iconic roles. What a great actor!
tbh i've never seen him did a bad in the roles he were playing. such a versatile actor whether playing the lead, a background or supporting character.

@@Jimoshi1 not at all. Vaako is serious, clever, and driven. His character in thor was goofy, easily manipulated, and a coward until 1 moment.
He played John Kennex in the criminally short-lived Almost Human, and it was an incredible show that was robbed of more seasons
He was also in R.E.D with Bruce Willis and Morgan Freeman, to name a few. Loved that role as well!
Karl Urban has always been an absolute class act and someone who pours everything into every character he plays. Very happy that he's seeing success.
He's also one of the few actors I know that knows a lot about the material he's playing.
Not just the cliff notes, but really detailed information about the story, other characters, etc

Karl Urban is above and beyond one of the most underrated actors, he’s awesome and I’ve loved every role he’s played in, it’s crazy too cause he’s got that Gary Oldman vibe where he’s constantly in all these huge productions but you don’t realize it till later
Karl Urban is a world renowned and yet at the same time underrated actor. That's how good he is.
Karl Urban has heavily impacted every single phase of my nerdy life:
Lord of the Rings/Xena - Elementary school
Bourne/Riddick/Doom - Middle school
Star Trek/RED - Highschool
Into Darkness/Dredd - College/Grad School
Thor/The Boys/Beyond - Adult Career

So glad someone mentioned doom! That was like 5th or 6th grade for me (I think) and I watched it constantly. He was my favorite thing about the whole movie.
I highly recommend his short lived series called "Almost human". It was brilliant and it's such a shame it only got one season.

Billy’s bloody smile with the crazed look in his eye legitimately sends chills down my spine. It’s easily some of the best characterization Karl has injected into one of his roles and all through the 2 second smile of a mad man.
When his eyes widened and then he spat blood on Translucent I was like "yup, I'm sold, best character ever".

I absolutely love how he was perfectly fine with keeping the helmet on throughout the movie. Compare that to Stallone who not only took it off every chance he could, but squeezed in a kiss at the end. That's the difference between an actor who cares about the character and an actor who only cares about themselves.

The fact that we never got a sequel further exploring Urban’s Dredd is criminal. That movie was fantastic and one of the most brilliant comic book adaptations ever put to screen imo. He’s already expressed interest in revisiting the character, someone needs to pull the trigger and green light another Dredd movie.

The first one had some awful marketing, push the 3D aspect way too much. At the same time it is ironic, considering it is probably the best use of 3D that was ever applied during that trend. The slo-mo scenes where amazing in 3D

Karl Urban was great as Eomer.He didn't have a lot of scenes but he definitely had the screen presence to make Eomer a memorable character. I am happy for the success he enjoys after LOTR.

lyin Return of the King Extended Edition, in the aftermath of the siege of the Minas Tiras, he was looking around for survivors and he sudden spots his sister unconscious on the ground just wailing in horror thinking his sister is dead. Even though he didnt get much screen time, that performance was great.

I know Dredd underperformed at the box office initially, but I feel like more people have seen it over the years and realised how good it is. I would love to see another film or limited series with Karl.

The whole boat scene with jack Quaid is so in sync with Their characters with jack shouting on top of his lungs, terrified to his core and Karl not paying any heed to him. 😂
I was obsessed with Karl in LOTR. Yes, his acting and the character are incredible, but most impressive was how his nose matched his helmet's horse nose SO PERFECTLY

No exaggeration, I think Dredd is one of the most under appreciated movies made in the last 30 years.
Ever since first seeing Karl Urban as Eros in the Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, i've been a big fan. His roles in the films Pathfinder & Riddick were also outstanding. Really can't get enough of this great and humble actor ❣
Great to hear Karl's appreciation and perspective on how groundbreaking Xena was. I hadn't considered the impact it made on the film industry in New Zealand. And hearing his admiration for Lucy Lawless is heartwarming.

While I don't disagree, everyone forgets that the start of it all, the series that got that change started, was Hercules. Xena was a spin-off, and those changes Karl talks about were well underway when Xena started filming.

First time I saw Urban was in "The Chronicles of Riddick" as necromonger commander Lord Vaako. Did a great job then, and consistently has continued to do so.
That's also the earliest film I remember seeing him in, so I always think of that role first for him :)

@@harlanhardway5955 It is probably due to time constraints, either Karl Urban only had so much time to interview, or they did ask him about it and cut it out to keep the video at 20 minutes. Seems to be a recurring thing in these videos, missing major roles and hearing about it in comment sections. I would easily watch an hour of this lol.

Same, I've watched the Bourne Supremacy and Thor: Ragnarok and I honestly did not know they were both him. It's not that I recognised him at the time. I only really started paying attention after watching him in 'The Boys'.
When I went back expecting some semblance of his previous characters looking like Butcher, I was so surprised. None of his characters look similar to each other at all.

I just love that he's humble enough that he can film something like Dredd where he wears a helmet the entire time and isn't a drama queen about "BUT I GOTTA SHOW MY FACEEEE". He's in it for the end product and respects source material and I love it.
Not an actor, but I think part of the 'show my face' thing is that a lot of how they act and emote is through their eyes, and the mask just wholly cuts it off.

Karl is the Gary Oldman of our generation - he wears each role like a glove and it's hard to discern him among the roles. He was a fantastic McCoy - very believable and faithful to the original role.

His yelling "no!" When seeing Eowyn on the battlefield was so powerful it made me look up who this guy was and what else he was in. 👍👍

how the same actor can play Butcher, Eomer, Dredd and Bones is crazy testament to his acting skills.
His respectful take on Bones was just so wonderful. For those of us who grew up on TOS, Bones was the character that was there to represent us. Just a guy who would just as soon be treating people in some little office in po-dunk Georgia who somehow ended up in space. He was our eyes and ears.

Karl Urban is one of the most versatile actors ever. All his roles I hardly notice it's Karl because it's like a disguise. He works the character and the transformation into the character so well I just never realize it's Karl in that part until I find out later. He's such a chameleon.
You can argue "The Boys" is a comedy but I don't think Karl has done a TRUE comedy like something with Will Ferrell, Jason Bateman, etc.
His transformations remind me of Gary Oldman and he's one of the greatest.
I first saw him on xena, as cupid. I have loved him ever since. he is an actor who instantly recognise and then forgets because he IS the character. loved him as a vampire, and a soldier turned superhuman in a movie with Rosamund Pike. forgot the names of those movies.

I recently revisited the original Doom movie and honestly he was the best part in the movie. Karl Urban can do no wrong in any movie or show.

I'm one of the dozen people worldwide who actually enjoy this film. :) It's a fun watch. Is it high cinema? Nope! But it's fun. I have it on DVD, watch it maybe once a year. It's not based off the DOOM game I played, but it's still amusing.
His role as Eomer in LOTR was top notch 10/10.
I love him since Xena. Every role he played, he was so amazing. I am totally in love with his acting skills and him.
My favorite show featuring Urban was "Almost Human". I thought it was a great show and deserved much more praise than it got.

YES!!! He discussed Xena. First show I watched him. His take on Julius was SO GOOD!!! His death scene is my favourite Julius death scene, he doesn't go down wallowing, he glares and almost sneers. Love Karl Urban's depiction.
Before Caesar, he played Eros (Cupid) on Hercules.

Having just started watching The Boys, I never realized how many roles Karl has portrayed. Bones was the stunner.
He has had an incredible run of diverse characters and he absolutely nailed every single one of them. His range is as exceptional as his humbleness and praise of everyone around him.
Met Karl at a New Order concert in Toronto. He was by himself. Not a fanboy but felt compelled to go up to him and tell him I was a fan ever since his Bourne film. He had a good energy about himself, seems like a cool dude.
The Two Towers was the first movie I saw Karl Urban in, followed by the Bourne Supremacy, but I've loved him for such iconic roles ever since. He's a very understated actor!
Yeah, Butcher is a very understated Character.
Dredd was just a perfect adaptation of what the comic is. It's like, it's a day of his life, that's all, and that's all we wanted!
He was great in Red as well, his interactions with Bruce Willis were awesome
I wouldn't have thought it before but after seeing Karl Urban as Butcher I feel like he'd make such a great Wolverine. It's awesome seeing his big roles.

And the great thing about his acting is that he played his roles really well to the point you remember the characters, rather than that it's Karl.
Heck, this video made me realize he was Julius in Xena (which I watched religiously) and the assassin in the Bourne movie. I remembered those characters, didn't know it was him.
@@thespicemelange.1 Doom was awful, but he sure did the best he could with what he was given. He is by far the best part of the movie.
Would love to see a Dredd 2 movie. Mr. Urban did a fantastic job as the title character.
I seriously want another Dredd movie with Karl Urban that was a phenomenal performance. And Urban's ability to become a character and not have actor demands that could ruin it is well appreciated.
I always liked his role in the movie RED found him really underrated in that. The way he says, “bad move grandpa” gets me every time.

With the exception of The Boys, where he looks like himself, I never recognize Karl Urban when I watch movies and he is playing a role. Usually my partner has to say that's Karl Urban and I squint my eyes and go, OMG that is Karl Urban! I think that says so much about his ability to immerse himself in the role so utterly that he becomes the character. It's uncanny. Great actor and I look forward to not recognizing him in many future movies.
I saw Dredd when it came out, but for some reason didn't think much of it. Now that time has passed I see how great the movie truly is. Those little details, psychology, the world. The whole crew really shined and showed utmost respect and love to Dredd comics.
Playing the bad guy in Red with bruce willis and john malkovich was great

Yes, very good point. A lot of actors live by their faces as their brand and would have wanted even a tiny face shot. Urban was perfect in Dredd
I heard it was the director telling him during the casting "You know, if you take this role, your face won't be seen"
BTW the fact Dredd (Urban) keeps his helmet on for the full movie makes the Marvel movies look even more silly, in when heroes are taking their helmets/masks off (or make them mysteriously disappear by nanotec "magic") in every random scene.
I love Karl Urban. It's a crime that we didn't get a Dredd sequel or a Season 2 to Almost Human, both of which are brilliant works of art and so underrated.
I’ve forgiven the world for no Dredd sequel, but I don’t think I’ll ever get over Almost Human not getting a 2nd season to at least wrap up all the things that were introduced
should have done a 10 episode, no identity politics, true to the stories Dredd series... would have been one for the ages.
Karl is one of the greatest actors. I’ve seen him in so many different roles and before I knew who he was as an actor, I had no idea those characters were played by the same guy. He has such a dynamic range in the roles he plays.
We need a follow up to Dredd and Anderson!!!
I’m SO thrilled we got a Dredd who actually was raised with and loved the material. I hope one day we do get to visit these stories again, too - with Karl Urban in the helmet!
A little sad he didn’t talk about playing Vakko in Riddick but Karl is such a fantastic actor glad to live in a time where we can see him play in so many amazing films

As someone who is half British and kiwi, it’s pretty clear that his British Billy Butcher accent isn’t amazing and comes off mostly as Australian. No hate tho

Karl Urban is one of those guys who becomes his role so well you sometines miss him. Its a testament to his skill, though leads to him being habitually underrated imo
Dredd needs to be reborn with Urban at the end of the gun, one of my favorite movies, really hope they choose to make more.
Karl actually respected deforest Kelly and created a great character that felt like it really was bones
Dredd is among the 3 best action movies of the 2010's alongside Jonh Wick 1 and Mad Max: Fury Road

Basically, whoever is in charge of the movie rights to Judge Dredd, so many people would watch a Dredd 2 it's ridiculous. Get as much of the same crew as possible, and obviously Urban as Dredd. It would be amazing.
