Thank you for the information, this gives me so many good memories of visiting Shanghai many times in the past. I'm visiting again soon after 4-5 years of not being able to come, can't wait!
Very Big thanks for this video! Been looking for a very detailed video on how the metro works and this explains it all😅 Can’t wait for my solo trip there! 😃
If you are 60 and up, you do not have to buy a ticket, because for those metro is free. Find the entrance (and exit) with service man, show them your passport with the year of birth - that's it and you are out or in without any payments (i have tested it personally in Shenzhen many times)
@@ArchsStanton agreed, just because a city has lots of tall buildings and bright lights doesn't make it bigger than certain cities that are more vast and sprawling land wise!
Thank you so much for your hard work to give us a super clear and easy to understand instruction. I would appreciate if you can make a video on how to transfer between lines.
There is a little error in the video (11:19). The Line 1 train you're on is actually one of the newest trains in the Shanghai metro system, and the LCD screens on the new trains are all mounted in the middle of the carriage (between the doors), rather than directly above the doors. At the same time, the TV next to the door also clearly shows the terminal station and current station information.
Well I wouldn't call it n error, cuz the newer trains I meant have a LED lamp map of the stationa showing in red what's past and green what's to come + all the screens mentioned. Way easier to navigate
The most reliable one in 10 years Shanghai can only remember 2 times they had issues, one time due to buge rain and water in some station and one time due to door mail function. Any other times always on time. Love it
Thank you. When I click "Agree and obtain card," it asked me to fill mobile number, and it has to be a Chinese number. How were you able to just continue on 3:20 ?
Very useful video. Thank you! Could you please clarify me two things? The alipay code you use when you checkout the metro is the same of the entrance or you generate a new one? And If you catch a bus you need to scan the code twice ( when you enter and when you get off the bus) ?
I really love your video man .. Thx so much . but I have question >> could you please give me the most important stations in Shanghai Metro . for example I know about people square and Lujiazui about the Card at 5:14 .. Is that card called SPTC / shanghai public transportation card ?
Hey Oli - thanks for a very informative video. What ticketing options would you recommend a family travelling with kids for a few days in Shanghai and using the metro system?
You could buy the weekly pass, that's a new offer. However I've never tried it and tbh, each ride is soooooo cheap. In my humble opinion just pay ride by ride with your metro card or alipay/iphone wallet. If your kids are small enough take them on your arms and they go for free
Thank you for the video. i tried adding the shanghai card in my iphone, but it asks me to add a card when adding money despite already having cards in apple pay. When i add the card, it says card already exist.
Hi do we need an app to call a taxi to the PVG airport? and whether is it easy to get a taxi to the airport very early in the morning (before 5 o´clock in the morning?)
Hello, no app needed at major hubs such as main train stations and airports. They've taxi stands to get a taxi 24/7. From anywhere else you'll always need a taxi app, how that works please see my video here th-cam.com/video/8aC-2mIGTgU/w-d-xo.htmlsi=T8o2mxXOkSnqainD
I found in this video you friend enter the reusable card to the exit gate machine, was it suppose to be with you until you refund it to get the deposit back?
Hello, is one metro card can be swiped more than once 6:13 as we are 3 people and thinking to use only 1or if using alipay on mobile phone, can it also be used 3 times (for 3 persons) at one journey? Do you live in Shanghai? Do you know if they have cherry blossoms now and whether will still be there until first week if April. Thanks
Hello, unfortunately not you can only swipe one time to get in and then need to get out again first, so it can calculate your distance and deduct the fee.
@@OlisBigPicturethanks so much, another question, if takibg metro from PVG airport, we are aiming to Putuo Langao Rd, using line 2 and then line 7. How we buy the ticket, can we just but at once at PVG or we need to buy it separately at the correspondence metro station?
Excellent explanation, so it means the token "coins" have been replaced by cards? The moving LED was already present in the Guangzhou metro when I last visited in 2019 so it might not be that new?
Unfortunately I've never tried that, you can see how we buy ticket at the counter at the airport at our maglev video: th-cam.com/video/A-brDtot6is/w-d-xo.htmlsi=LanaDgI8LZ8rp0mR

thank you and also can i know whether laoximen and dashije or east nangjing metro stations are open. Google shows these mtro stations as closed@@OlisBigPicture
It depends, if you have a (digital/plastic) card with “T-Union” sign, no matter which city issues, it’ll allow you to take metro in many Chinese cities including Shanghai and Beijing (and many other large cities). If you don’t understand Chinese language but luckily come to China with an iPhone, you’ll better to use Apple Maps, don’t forget to switch the layer to public transport, it shows you all metro routes of the city and the notice on which stop is temporarily closed.
That’s the first video I’ve seen really explaining the important things about the Metro in China.
search Eric G, his is even better.
因为在中国人们已经习以为常了,所以没意识到需要“教学”。
Super helpful, thank you! :D
you can also buy a one-day card (18 RMB) and a 3-day card ( 45 RMB). Unlimited use in the valid period.
Good to know thank you! I always just use my app, didn't know this
That is so helpful guys, thanks, I'm going to Shanghai this Nov, and can't wait to go there Wuhuuu!!
I was bothered if I can use cash to buy tickets or not. Your video came to my rescue. thanks!!

How reliable is the public transport in Shanghai/ China?
The most reliable one in 10 years Shanghai can only remember 2 times they had issues, one time due to buge rain and water in some station and one time due to door mail function. Any other times always on time. Love it
It will be a big political event if the public transportation system can’t work for 10 mins , the officials could be fired for their management
just like any kind of public transportation in any city in China, they are extremely reliable

I’m curious. Does your credit card bank charge the international conversion fee that linked in the Alipay?
Every bank handles foreign transactions bit different, there's no clear answer to that. Need to check with your bank

People in China just love to stare at foreigners, which is really funny because I used to have a long beard and they thought I was a foreigner.
