Fine Art Photography or dead tree in the sea?

- In this video, I take a picture of a dead tree in the sea. I'm calling it art. Is it art or a picture of a tree in the sea?
It's not just a tree! The extraordinary thing about this tree is that three or four days of the year during very high tides, the sea covers the land it sits in. Therefore, on only a handful of days each year, the tree stands proud in the sea.
Having an isolated subject in my opinion is perfect for Fine Art Photography. Or is it?
During filming, I remembered a recent trip to a gallery in Liverpool. I was very excited and really looked forward to the visit. My excitement however was very short-lived.
I struggled to find anything that really impressed me. Furthermore, there were staff at hand trying to explain what certain art pieces were or represented. At that time I remembered thinking that if somebody had to explain it, it didn't work. It might to other people, but not me!
I then thought, well, I'm doing the exact same thing. I'm telling you I'm creating art which I believe I am, but what if you disagree?
So that's the story behind this video. I believe I have created art to be proud of but what do you think?

I see Art. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I feel its truly a person perspective and what they enjoy looking at and creating. Some stuff people call art I don't see it or understand it.

A very artistic picture of a tree in the sea. Lovely. Although I do like the original as well.
The tree is what makes the art, the sea and the clouds make the canvas. One need only look at trees in winter when driving I the suburbs and see the naked trees are art in themselves, But the tree gets caught in the background. using the sea and the clouds as a canvas really shows the perfect art of the tree. So YES it is fine art

Definitely Art. A lone tree in any composition appeals to me. I have a lone tree in a Canola field that I just love and am always looking out for that bare tree.

For me, I do see the perception of Art. But also a great image before you post process that shows off the fantastic world of mother nature. Great Vlog Gary I can see the magic of the place and I'm sure you will return for another vLog later.

For me Gary this IS art, creation of work that pays resemblance to what is there to be seen but manipulated to the artists vision of what they want to say and show to the viewer. Absolutely love it!!!

I am no expert on what is art and what isn’t, but your original image is a nice photo of a dead tree in its environment. What you did with it makes it more of an artists impression, but what do I know. If you like it, you have achieved your goal. For what it is worth, I like it too.

Very late to the party but I see superb images. I am not sure what 'fine art' actually is, but I would describe these as stunning fine art shots of a dead tree in the sea. My personal view is that if you are shooting for yourself, and not for commission, the only person you have to please is yourself. If others admire your work that is a bonus and I believe that the vast majority of people who see you landscape work are nothing but impressed (and slightly jealous of your talent).

I have a camera so I am a photographer, I love art but I am no artist, I have always said that photography is a art! The mind boggles at times, Yes there is a difference between good pictures and those classed as fine art but at times fine art is very hard to explain and the finished picture does that! I went to a art exhibition in Birmingham a long time ago l saw a fine art masterpiece it was a pile of house bricks another exhibit was a unmade soiled bed was this fine art in my mind no because it did not please me I I called it rubbish, your pictures were top class did they please me yes they did they were brilliant just like the other pictures in your series, you worked hard on every picture and you deserve your rewards. No they was not just pictures of a tree they were much better than that and would not be out of place in a art gallery. You asked for comments and this was mine. Thank you for sharing your fine art pictures with us they were a delight to see.

Hi Gary. I’m never sure what I think about the term “Art”, as it is truly a subjective subject. One persons’ art is another persons’ tipped over pot of paint! A photograph in itself is an image, a reproduction of what the eye sees to a greater degree, I think? But what I do see is your amazing ability to manipulate an image into something very special from a vision in your mind, and that I believe is an “Art Form”. I love these fine art images that you create and only wish I had a fraction of your skill. So, if creativity = art, then art it is.

Stayed with friends in Taunton this weekend and stumbled on this location on a walk around Porlock yesterday- couldn’t believe the coincidence. Unfortunately tide was low and well out and camera was at home. Great location!

I thinkthis because of the post processing work you chose to do, you took the image of a tree in the water and made it your own through your own creative choices. I'd class it as fine art because of how images is post processed and even how it wascomposed and taken I love that sort of look.
I see a very nice image of a tree in the sea. That said, I have a hard time with the words “fine art”. A lot of what is considered fine art is stuff I really don’t get. And I would never ever hang on my walls. A lot of what is considered commercial art I really love. It seems “art” is for the elite who (pretend to?) get that type of art. And mind you, there is art that I really like but it tends to be in the figurative type of art. I’m not so much in it for the art, I’m more in it for the images I love to look at. A lot of your photography falls into that category for me. Nice work Gary, really nice work.
I'd be more than happy with the initial pic with a bit of tweaking. What you have done is taken it to a whole different level! 👏

The finished image is Art. Nothing like what you took in the camera. You are an artist that uses photography as your canvas and processing as your brushes and paints. I totally love the finished image and would love to produce something near to this. What I would like answered is, "How long did the editing take"?
