Fine Art + HDR Photography Steetley Pier

  • In this video entitled, "Fine Art and HDR Photography Steetley Pier" I combine both genres and I was surprised by how much I liked it!
Earlier this week, I headed to Hartlepool to capture a Fine Art image of Steetley Pier. Whilst I was there I had an idea! Why not capture the pier in my normal fine-art way but also take a few extra bright images which will enable me to add light to the otherwise dark areas of the picture.
That type of photography is called HDR (High Dynamic Range) It's a genre of photography that serious photographers rarely use. HDR photography is a lot of fun. Its original use was over-used and very often over-post-processed. Because of this, I think that's why photographers have put it on the back-burner!
Personally, I still love HDR photography. I need to delve into the genre a lot more. I'm sure the forgotten style still has a lot to offer in these modern days!
I hope you like the video.

What i love about you with your images, is you for the most part always ask for our opinion unlike many others who just make out like it's their way or the highway and you can't say anything constructive about it.

This is my first video of yours that I have seen. First, I think you are a very good teacher. I use a completely different camera/software and had no problem following the concepts presented. For my money, the HDR addition adds more leading lines to your focal point (that tiny triangle in the middle) and adds to it. But I also REALLY like the other shot of the pier that you showed. Its time for me to get a nice filter kit like you use and start playing around. It really does not take that much longer to take the extra shots and then make decisions back home in the studio nor does it take that much extra time to move the camera around seeing if there is a better composition. When I started photography it was with a 4x5 camera and extra shots were pricey! With unlimited memory we really can experiment more (and should!).

Hi Gary, I prefer the use of HDR for under the bridge, what a difference it made. I loved the last image of the pier and the stumps,it was super and I am gonna guess that was without the HDR treatment. Oh yes, and I prefer the shot under the pier with the extra bits the way you finally chose it to be, as soon as you started I was like “oh no Gary you must keep them in,they make for a far more complete image” , thankfully you seen the light (no pun intended lol). Excellent video, one I was deeply engrossed in from start to finish, thank you 😁👍

Nice and Yes, I very much like it. Small tip I picked up on youtube somewhere is to pack 3 old CDs and put your tripod on top of that on sandy soil or beaches. During a trip to Madeira I also have been experimenting with focus stacking and exposure blending: take a short exposure of a flower in the foreground and blend that with a long exposure of the seascape in the background also gives very nice results

I love the HDR addition. It really does bring out the otherwise lost dark details. I don’t think it takes away from the original shot, rather, it is more like what the human eye naturally adds in real time viewing to compensate for the dark areas. After all, as good as modern cameras are, they can’t do what the human eye does. At least, not without help in post, LoL!

The HDR added is nice. Enjoyed seeing your post process for the final image and would love to see more of your videos that includes post processing. It's like a bonus learning chip for me. Great video.

Codger, great that you are finding some of the best things in Ps. Welcome to the 2020s. Nice image.Doesn't require a whole TH-cam vid to explain. "the more work you soon an image; the more you degrade its quality" unless yi are working in RAWl

like your "hand made" HDR. Its a good way to work with a lower opacity to control the effekt. In my opinion 100% might be tiu much.

I wasn't sure I would like this, but it turns out, it worked really well, I like the juxtaposition of the water with all the detail lost to the long exposure, alongside the pier with all of the detail being available to the viewer.
I always look forward to your next videos, always inspirational and educational.

Brilliant as usual Gary! I think the addition of the extra image makes it so much better, it gives it more of a fine art feel in my opinion as the lighting under the pier is not what the eye would normally see as it is brighter with more of the shadow detail being visible, cracking shot(s)! 👍🏻

Love the final image Gary. I think people that still have reservations with HDR need to remember that it is simply a tool to increase detail precision and reduce noise in the shadows, and is a means-to-an-end for the 3+ stops shortfall between the dynamic range of our cameras and that of our visual system. We've all seen bad examples of HDR, such as when a post-sunset sky meets a daytime foreground, but if you can composite well and sell the effect as realistic then it's a valuable tool that yields cleaner, better-detailed images.
