Thanks for the pointers, Joe. When I got my necker XL knife (or whatever you ended up calling them) it was the pointiest knife I'd ever owned. But of course I've worn off some of the point now, so it's time to put that point back on. No, I haven't broken any off, it's just not as sharp as it used to be, and a simple sharpening doesn't re-point the blade. I saw you rubbing that knife at 90-degrees last video, or so and it kind of freaked me out. That's why my knives don't get as pointy as you. But I'm working on it now. :)
if a regular sharpening doesnt get the point, it could be that you are stopping your sharpening stroke with the point still on the stone, and so the very tip isnt getting any abrasion. you could try to come off the stone, or, continue to move the point as you lift the blade off the stone to get that last little bit. a majic marker on the tip would let you know pretty quick
i sold that to my boy, and i dont think there is enough money out there to buy it from him. it has the first engine he ever rebuilt by himself in it, and he loves that car alot :}
Would a crystolon coarse work ok if I was setting an edge bevel for the first time on a blank. I want to take a knife from a profiled blank to a finished edge, but don't have space for belt sander. Or is it better to set the original bevel with files, and then smooth it with the crystolon and stone progress from there? Blank will only be about 3 mm thick to start.
at 3mm thick, it would take quite awhile to grind in a while blade bevel and then edge bevel with a bench stone, and you would wear quite a bit of the stone away. if the blank was soft enough after heat treat, you could cut it with files to get it close, and then finish with a bench stone. or you could get it pretty close, to say 1mm with files and the stone, then heat treat it, and then finish with the stone.
like if you break off a pretty big chunk of the tip? i have done that and then just sharpened the broken off part like a chisel and it worked out pretty well.
