    I just want to say, no matter how many times I watch your videos, there is one thing you do that never gets old for me. It is when you make your cup of tea after putting the blade in the temper oven. I'm not sure why, but it always gives me a sense of peace and makes me smile. Beautiful blade in this one, by the way.

      Village blacksmiths were rarely killed due to the demand for their skill, an your average blacksmith could produce an average longsword in about a week. Although the most common weapon was the spear, and before a war when blacksmiths were at their most busy they could make about 3 spears a day, assuming someone else made the shafts. Although swords commissioned by lords and other high ranking members could take upwards of 6 months to complete to standard

  • @Paul8259
    @Paul8259 3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    After working with my forging technique some I can appreciate the skill set here. At 9:20 for example he had handy-like tools for his power hammer to form the tang. I found using a manual hammer with borax flux can cause it to explode; also hammering causes slag to scatter like from an arc weld. The power hammers are best if you are a serious smith. His small forge is similar to the inexpensive brick one I built powered with a weed (cactus) burner and hair dryer setup. It's also capable of welding temperatures.

      Double ZZ Ranch
      The only way to really know if your making good knives is to make some and break them. It’s the price of empirical education. It’s a little cheaper if you harden and temper, then torture test some thin pieces of steel before making a whole knife. Use simple oil hardening steels until you know what your doing. Spring steel (5160) can be made into excellent working knives with the most basic equipment.
      Otherwise, if your a stock removal guy, you can send your blades to Buck Knives and use their hardening and tempering services. (it’s surprisingly affordable)
