In Paul's fight with Jamis, there's something you guys don't mention that I think has to be a huge factor. Paul's visions depict Jamis as a mentor and friend, but here he is in a duel with him. Not only has he never taken a life before but he tries to force him to surrender because that's what he feels he's supposed to do, in order to fulfill the vision. I can't imagine the conflicting emotions going on with him during that fight, before realizing that vision was just another false possibility

Dune it's an amazing saga, taking you on a journey through thousands of years (if you include all the books). I read Dune for the first time when I was 14 years old - Paul was always my fave character, his evolution, understanding of Arrakis as he was a native to the sand planet, the connection of spice to the sand worms...so well done.
This really reminds me our Earthly issues with oil - oil is life, oil must flow, lol

53:02 Sand vibrating becomes like liquid, it's called liquefaction.
Earthquakes can cause a similar effect that is a serious issue for buildings built on sand like Tokyo.
Read Dune in the '70s. Awesome movie Parts 1 & now 2.

Just a slight correction, the Sardaukar aren't the criminals sent to Salusa Secundus, they're actually descendants of tribes native to the planet, the actual prisoners are the people being bled out for the ritual. the concept of the prison planet is partially because people there are trapped and rarely escape, the sardaukar themselves are survivors of conditions which kill 6 out of every 13 children of the native tribes before the age of 11, whilst the mortality rate of new prisoners is over 60%.

Careful of the use of the word “native.” They did not evolve on that planet. Humans are ONLY native to Earth.

    • @raidersofthelostpodcast_
      @raidersofthelostpodcast_  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The Fremen are natives of Arrakis. They were the first humans on the planet and the first people born there. That is literally the definition of native/indigenous. Native: a person born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth, whether subsequently resident there or not.

The Fremen would strongly disagree. As their oral traditions clearly state they are Zensunni WANDERERS from the below quoted seven planets…and prior to those, an obvious origin being Earth. The “wanderers” part being basically the CORE of their cultural and religious beliefs, they don’t consider themselves natives of Arrakis.
Again, from the DUNE WIKI (but based on Brian Herbert’s statements on the issue). Note he final sentence.
According to Fremen legend, the migration of the Zensunnis saw them move through the following planets:
      Nilotic al-Ourouba
      Poritrin
      Salusa Secundus
      Bela Tegeuse
      Rossak
      Harmonthep
      Arrakis
It is clear that their migration is more complicated than their tradition states. The actual route was probably diverse and non-sequential, and was often unique to an individual or group of individuals. The only certainty is that the Wandering Zensunni have originated on Earth (with Nilotic al-Ourouba more likely than not being the Nile Valley in Africa), like all other humans.

“The novel Paul of Dune (2008) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson establishes that the first known inhabitants of Arrakis had been the Muadru, who introduced the sandworms to the planet. They had settlements all over the galaxy which suddenly disappeared; the Zensunni Wanderers came later, ultimately becoming the Fremen. In the novel Paul notes, "There appears to be a linguistic connection between the Fremen and the Muadru."[13”
That reminds me…since the entire culture of the Fremen are s based on their past enslavement…they we’re BROUGHT to Arrakis BY SLAVERS … Meaning, you guessed it, they were NOT the original humans on Arrakis…

Stillsuits are definitely described as gray, the phrase "gray slickness" is often used. But Frank is very sparse with such things. I think they blend into the rocks and night, which is when the Fremen usually move.

Don’t know where you’re getting your information and data… but it’s well established (from turning Herbert’s ARAKIS MAP that he drew himself, into a globe) that Arakis is about the size of Earth’s MOON… NOT anywhere near the size of the Earth. Only 1/4 that size. Despite this, Arakis has 90% the Earth’s gravity. This means Arakis has a very heavy core, unlike our Moon.

And from ATLAS OF THE IMPERIUM: ARRAKIS.
Arrakis is the third planet of the star Canopus, located 313.74 ly from the Imperial Capital on Kaitain (310 ly from Old Earth). Canopus is an ancient star, a white giant, having already completed its hydrogen burning phase. It is possible to likely that Canopus once had more than the planets currently visible, but the rest were swallowed up by the star’s previous expansion phases and effectively destroyed. Arrakis may have been a satellite of a larger body before being catapulted into its current orbit by the same expansion event.
Arrakis is an unusually small planet, matching almost exactly in size the dimensions of Old Earth’s moon, Luna (diameter: 3,474.2 km, circumference: 10,921 km). The planet’s density is considerable, however, meaning that its mass is greater than is normal for a body of its size, giving it a gravitational field only slightly weaker than Galactic Standard at 0.9g.

I have to confess that I was one of those that complained that it was boring. I watched it at the cinema the day it came out and I slept in between..lol. But with the hype and reviews, I decided to rent it on amazon when it became available and boy was I wrong!! I love it and it is my best movie of 2021. I think for people who do not know anything about Dune, watching it the first time especially at the cinema is a bad idea. I have seen it three times now and plan to watch it again because it gets better each time.

    • @lucagiovanetti9870

If all those people who claimed the movie was a drag and didn't like it because of the slow place and lenght had given the movie a second chance and watched it 2/3 times, i'm sure they would have changed their mind about it and appreciate it. It's a kind of movie that needs multiple viewings. But no...they thought one viewing was enough and totally misjudged it.

Frank Herbert refers to an intergalactic empire in Dune but I do agree that it makes more sense that it's interstellar. In 1965 when it was written, few people realized how big the universe actually is. The closest galaxy to the Milky Way is Andromeda and it's over 2.0mil light years away. The size of the universe is mind-boggling and most everyone agrees it's expanding at an incredible rate.

I love the review but I just can’t get past the way he says “Mo-Jayv” desert at about the 24:40 mark. As a Spanish word, the J (edit: in Mojave) is pronounced as an H, and the E is not silent, making it the “Mo-Hah-Vey” desert. It’s a beautiful place well worth visiting. (Edit: Three places worth mentioning are: 1: Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, just a half hour away from the Las Vegas Strip, 2: Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, the largest oasis in the Mojave Desert, home to endemic flora and fauna found here, and nowhere else on earth, and 3: Death Valley National Park, a 3 hour drive from Las Vegas, home to the lowest place in the Western Hemisphere and the hottest place on Earth. I’ve been to all 3 places, and they are magical!)
