  • Legendary bass player and producer Jimmy Haslip has been playing Roscoe basses since 1998 and has toured with his 6 string Roscoe LG 3006 bass exclusively since then. As part of a virtual masterclass on 2022-08-21, Jimmy talks with Ron of RVA Sound Doctor and Keith of Roscoe Guitars about why he plays Roscoe.

    I'd seen Jimmy's name on recordings for years, and I finally got to hear him live last night w/ Oz Noy and Anton Fig 🤯🥵 Those dudes are master's of their instruments. I was sitting there with my mouth hanging open.

    I played bass as a youngster. The first bassist that I idolized, who totally blew my mind in the 1970s was Stanley Clarke. In 1978, I stumbled upon a Weather Report Heavy Weather cassette tape, which is how I discovered "Jaco Pastorius!!!" When I first heard Jaco, I was absolutely speechless! I just wasn't prepared for what Jaco brought to the table. In the 70s, Jimmy Haslip became a student of Jaco. I think Jimmy has been the one bassist to actually extended the life and spirit of Jaco though his unbelievably, breathtaking, Jaco-like, bass playing performances. Then, no body did it like Jaco. Now, no body does it like Jimmy!!! Thank you Jimmy.

      Jimmy is fanstastic! I caught him live with Dennis Chambers and Oz Noy last year. What a great show :) I also enjoy Michael Manring’s bass playing these days, but I have not seen him play live since ~ 2000.

    I'm a big fan of the Yellowjackets, especially the bass part. Are you interested in 12 string bass? A good friend of mine builds 12 string basses named Brooks EXB12 and they sound exceptionel!

    I lived in Greensboro and saw The Yellowjackets at Greensboro's "City Stage" annual event. I bet this was the same gig.

    Yellow pages, a cab, a pay phone, and an answering machine. This is back when decent quality US made tubes were still available.

    That bass sounds so beautiful in Jimmy's hands. Truly a unique instrument sound, especially with Jimmy's touch. There's something so warm, yet so punchy, about it.

    i never understood the separate volume knobs as opposed to a blend knob. too much room for error in dialing up the right mix of pickups. guess you cant argue with success though!

    • @ronknoblermusic
      @ronknoblermusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      A single blend knob seems to work fine for many players, but I do see how having two knobs allows the ability to dial in more combinations of blends.

    Jimmy's great and he certainly knows what he's doing... but I can't imagine turning all the eq bands full up at the instrument and leaving them like that. Seems like a great way to get a lot of hiss and mud.

    i have a guitar that was made by Mr. Roscoe. not a Bass though its a six string guitar Les Paul shaped with humbucker and a single coil. i've had it over 20 years and its still the best guitar i own. Keith is a master builder.

    Jimmy is an extremely cool and humble person and an incredibly versatile and talented bassist and one of my all-time favorites!!! I've been blessed to see him perform with the Yellowjackets a number of times(they have never been the same since he left in my opinion) but first heard him play on Gino Vannelli's Brother to Brother project. The title track is still one of the best songs that I have ever heard to date and the musicianship, including his playing, is absolutely stellar!!! Roscoe basses sound and look fantastic! Thank you for a great video and I need to watch the master class video now!!!
