One of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet, I was fortunate enough to have that opportunity one time in Kansas City. In fact, I was staying at the same hotel The Yellowjackets stayed at. Got 4th row seats for their show, and it was awesome. They all autographed the marquis poster for me.
It's great to see someone actually playing this way professionally. I've been playing bass left handed upside down for close to 40 years. I was originally learning to play a left handed guitar, when the church asked me to take the bass. I just flipped the right handed bass over and went from there. So, if I play guitar, it's left handed right side up, but the bass I play left handed upside down. I finally started to buy left handed basses and string them upside down. I haven't played enough to be professional, so seeing this is cool. There are others out there, because I've seen them every once in a while.
Along with John Patitucci & Steve Bailey, Jimmy Haslip was one of the cats that not only inspired me as an electric bassist, his pioneering use of Tobias 5 and 6 string instruments were a catalyst for my own transition in to playing six string bass guitars as a primary instrument. I also had the privilege of meeting and conversing with him after a Yellowjackets set at the Monterey Jazz Festival many years ago; it was both educational and thrilling to have an audience with one of my musical mentors. #respect
Not since the Jaco Pastorius Weather Report days has there ever been a musician who has taken the bass to new heights as a solo instrument operating in the lead role on a level of a guitar player the Jimmy Haslip has done for the last 40 plus years, his bass playing played a big role in the music of the Yellowjackets and he helped shaped the band's iconic identity that we have all come to know them for. When you hear them, you know straight away who it is and a large part of it is the jaw dropping bass playing. An amazing composer, fantastic bassist and an all round great person, Jimmy Haslip is the whoe package and one of the greatest bass players of all time.
Jimmy Haslip is one of my favorite bass player. He is always "in the music" just like Steve Gadd on drums or Joe Sample at the piano can be (could - refering to recent death of Joe) No show-off... just flows of notes in a perfect timing and harmony. Listen to Michael Francks "Bare foot on the beach" album where the quality of the recording highlights Jimmy's talent even thru recording sessions.
Jimmy you are an awesome musician and I got so much from your book and from listening to all of your albums with the Yellowjackets and your solo stuff over the years. You continue to be an inspiration. God bless you man!
Without question, one of the greatest to ever pick up the instrument. Has the very rare ability to combine virtuosity at a level that most bass players can only aspire to while simultaneously playing in service of the song. The Roy Hobbs of bass players: the best there ever was, the best there ever will be.
I'm a right handed bassist that plays with left handed setup...been playing 37 years, but upside down the last 13 or so. I had 2 guitar friends in my town that were lefties playing upside down, it intrigued me so I just wanted to try it. It's a very unique feeling and I loved it. I'm weird and unique so it fits.
Jimmy is an out of this world musician!... and a beautiful human being.

Awesome analysis of a superb bass player.

Jimmy was one of the first bassists I really latched onto when I was starting out. What a sound. He still inspires me to this day.
That bass playing style is definition of insanity, yet Haslip makes miracle!!!
one of my very fav bass players!

It's awesome they got Lavar Burton for this video. May the force be with him!
Jimmy The Man!!!!
Wish I would have stayed playing upside down like Mr. Haslip...great individual bass style. ..
I am teaching myself exactly the same way! This does limit your slap and pluck ability though. Haven’t seen much of that from Haslip.
