Theodore Robert Bundy aka Ted Bundy (born Cowell; November 24, 1946 - January 24, 1989) was an American serial killer who kidnapped, raped, and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s and possibly earlier. After more than a decade of denials, he confessed to 30 homicides, committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978. His true victim total is unknown, and could be much higher.
Bundy was regarded as handsome and charismatic, traits that he exploited to win the trust of victims and society. He would typically approach his victims in public places, feigning injury or disability, or impersonating an authority figure, before knocking them unconscious and taking them to secondary locations to rape and strangle them. He sometimes revisited his victims, grooming and performing sexual acts with the decomposing corpses until putrefaction and destruction by wild animals made any further interactions impossible. He decapitated at least 12 victims and kept some of the severed heads as mementos in his apartment. On a few occasions, he broke into dwellings at night and bludgeoned his victims as they slept.
In 1975, Bundy was arrested and jailed in Utah for aggravated kidnapping and attempted criminal assault. He then became a suspect in a progressively longer list of unsolved homicides in several states. Facing murder charges in Colorado, he engineered two dramatic escapes and committed further assaults in Florida, including three murders, before his ultimate recapture in 1978.
On February 8, Bundy drove 150 miles (240 km) east to Jacksonville, in a stolen FSU van. In a parking lot he approached 14-year-old Leslie Parmenter, the daughter of Jacksonville Police Department's Chief of Detectives, identifying himself as "Richard Burton, Fire Department", but retreated when Parmenter's older brother arrived and challenged him. That afternoon, he backtracked 60 miles (97 km) westward to Lake City. At Lake City Junior High School the following morning, 12-year-old Kimberly Dianne Leach was summoned to her homeroom by a teacher to retrieve a forgotten purse; she never returned to class. Seven weeks later, after an intensive search, her partially mummified remains were found in a pig farrowing shed near Suwannee River State Park, 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Lake City. She appeared to have been raped, then killed by neck lacerations with a knife.
For the Florida homicides, he received three death sentences in two trials. He was executed at Florida State Prison in Raiford on January 24, 1989.
Biographer Ann Rule described him as "a sadistic sociopath who took pleasure from another human's pain and the control he had over his victims, to the point of death, and even after." He once described himself as "the most cold-hearted son of a bitch you'll ever meet". Attorney Polly Nelson, a member of his last defense team, agreed. "Ted," she wrote, "was the very definition of heartless evil".

Poor Kimberly. Never had a chance to go to Prom, No Graduation, no going to the mall with her friends, no dating guys, getting a permit, no getting engaged, or having children and even getting married. That’s so sad and tragic. Her own parents had to bury her back in early 1978. So sad. And Kimberly had the exact birthday as my dad but four years a apart. 1969-1965. 😢

To make it worse, Kim had just been elected to be the Valentine's Day Princess at her schools Valentine's Day Ball that very weekend. After school she had plans to go with her mom to buy a dress for the ball...but she never made it. Ironically her dad died on Valentine's Day of 1990. 😳

I’ve been saying the exact same thing about Bundy for years. That he wasn’t as good-looking, charming and crafty as 1970’s lore has made him out to have been. I think it’s just that people were more naive back then, and more easily impressed for lack of a better word? Bundy was nobody special, from a criminal perspective. You said it exactly right - he simply capitalized on the fact that society was ill-equipped back then to deal with a predator like him. He knew it, and he used that fact to his full advantage.

Ted Bundy had wanted to be a Lawyer at some point in his life. He also worked at a "Suicide hotline" along side author #annrule . He was a brilliant..but somewhere in his life ..he took a bad turn in. He chose to kidnap, coerce and murder women. Just like #johnwaynegacy #jeffreydahmer just to name a few. He could have been an outstanding attorney..but he snapped..and engaged in a series of crimes that there was no redemption for.

Scott - A heartbreaking life not lived. My heart and prayers go to her family. A friend of mine (now passed) used to work in the same place as Bundy in Washington/Oregon area. He expressed interest in her but she wisely chose her future husband and went on to have a wonderful life. That choice probably saved her life. It scares me just to think of what might have happened. Thank you for sharing this video Scott. Blessings - Judith 🎭🎵

You nailed Bundy's narcissistic BS in the intro. He was acting and looking for a last minute reprieve. That evil look in his eyes when you froze the footage was him thinking "I'm totally fooling this interviewer". It's so sad about little Kimberly. You would never think she was in danger in a small town at school. I believe she's in a much better place now.

You always do such a GREAT job with these very difficult true crime stories. I think the victims would be proud of the way you honor them, by telling THEIR stories as well. I have met a serial killer, although at the time no one had any idea, but they can be very charming. I can understand why victims become victims. I met Charles Albright, known as the Eyeball Killer in the Dallas area. His girlfriend was the mother of a friend of mine from school, and she brought Charles home to Arkansas to meet everyone over Christmas. I sat across from him at a church dinner, and he was so quiet and charming. Scared me to death when the REAL story eventually came out!

I watch a lot of true crime, and one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to documentaries is that not enough attention is given to the victims. They are the people who deserve to be spoken about, not the killers. So thank you Scott for this video. I hope this series continues (not just with his victims but any true crime victim). As amazing as your true crime videos always are, this one in particular had me in tears. I was a freshman in college in VA when Ted Bundy murdered the coeds at FSU. As horrific as those murders were, and the murders of his other victims, the murder of little Kimberly Leach, just 12 years old, absolutely broke my heart. I can't imagine the terror she suffered during her abduction and that long drive to the wooded area. I imagine her crying out for her mother in her final moments. How depraved, to take an innocent child and throw her in a pigsty after he was done with her. At the very beginning of your video you show a tape of the interview Bundy had a few hours before his execution. I saw that video and it was a total BS move on his part to try to get a stay. The exact moment you stopped the tape, when Bundy stole that sneaky sideways glance at the interviewer (to see if he was buying his act), was the exact moment that sent chills down my spine when I watched it. There is the REAL Ted Bundy, master manipulator and malignant narcissist, in full display. He had zero remorse for any of his victims. Like other sadistic psychopaths, such as Dennis Rader (BTK) and the Canadian "killer couple", if Bundy had not been caught, he would have continued stalking and killing women and young girls until he was too old or physically incapable of doing it. He KNEW he was a monster but couldn't stop, and he didn't want to stop - he enjoyed it too much. You're right, the electric chair was much too quick for Bundy. The worst sentence for these malignant narcissists is to stick them in solitary without any kind of social interaction. They crave being the center of attention and being alone in their own company is the worst possible punishment.
This video was one of your best true crime videos thus far. Your compassion, and the heart and thought that you put into each of these videos, puts them in a class by themselves. Your subscribers can see how much work you put into these videos, and how emotionally taxing they are. This was a beautiful and very touching tribute and I have no doubt that Kimberly was listening as you stood there next to her grave.🌹 You are the ABSOLUTE BEST in this genre. 👏👏👏

That interview with James Dobson was a piece of work.
You can see right through Bundy.
His attempts to manipulate are incredibly obvious while he sits there believing he is more intelligent than everyone else.
I have researched him a little bit and the case of Kim Leach is overwhelmingly heartbreaking and disturbing.
    Good video, dude.
BTW, that is a very good idea to break up the Bundy story into individual segments as you cross through or near locations of importance.
    Looking forward to more.

was 5 weeks younger than me and I`ve often wondered about how incredibly difficult it must have been for him to grow up
trying to adjust to what happened to his kid Sister. The trauma her parents had to deal with is impossible to fathom.

I'm one who encouraged you to do serial killers. In the USA the media turns them into superstars! I think it's Norway, where a criminal is not even photographed or video taped to alleviate this. But one SK expert anaylized why were fascinated with criminals, he said," they're like great white sharks, rare and deadly " So they peak ppls interest. Another guy did all the Utah, Colorado landmarks, I'm very interested in the Washington ones. We cannot get around the interest. I study dark pyschology. I've been studying and reading about them since 1980!!! This guy was particularly evil, in he had NO CONSCIENCE, NO REMORSE! Most don't. Only a few have apologized. Scary stuff, great video! God bless

She would’ve been my age. I remember 1978 as being fun and innocent, not really a serious care in the world, playing w/friends and riding my bike. Disco music was popular and Saturday Night Fever dances were all the rage. I think I even had a similar haircut as Kimberly. Can’t even begin to imagine the horror she must’ve went through at the hands of this monster. At that age, you think that evil doesn’t exist. Prayers for her precious soul! Thank you Scott for making this video and paying tribute to her and not letting her be a forgotten victim!🙏🏼🙏🏼

I remember when Ted was arrested, escaped and yet again. I was a teen living in Florida for a couple of years when he killed Kimberly and the others. So I got this book THE ONLY LIVING WITNESS in 1983 This book scared the living crap out of me! In fact, I credit this book for making me aware of all the tricks killer's can use to lure women, forget that Ann Rule book, her's does not compare in the least. The only living witness should be required reading for ALL young girls. Teach them how evil some men can be. I never thought Ted to be handsome...average. But, he was smart in how he tricked women, making himself appear so helpless and nice.

Great video Scott. Such an awful story. We have been working on a Bundy one recently, and we did her story as part of it. We couldn't pinpoint the exact spot she was found and ended up seeing a map that showed it off on that road to the right of the entrance a little bit. We had seen someone else show your spot though, plus with the expert you talked to seems we may have ended up a little east of the exact spot. At any rate, you did a wonderful job showing the respect Kimberly deserves. Thanks.

Great documentary Scott, When I was in Law School studying Criminology as a major, I did a lot of research and wrote several papers on Ted Bundy this was in the early 90s. The purpose of this was criminal mind mapping. Kinda like trying to get in Bundy's head to see what he was thinking and why he had criminalists in his thought process. Never came up with a realistic thought process on this. But it did prepare me for serval trials in my profession. I like to thank you for your time and your research into this case and bringing this awful abduction to light and for giving this child the dignity( the state or quality of being worthy of honor or respect.) she deserves. You are also worthy of the same honor this documentary was not easy for you either.

Here's a fun fact. Have you ever heard of Arthur Shawcross the serial killer in upstate New York. I found one of the bodies by accident. It was behind the YMCA when I went there for the summer. I was very very young. I was playing kick ball and someone kicked the shit out of that ball lol and it went way over everybody. I went to go get it and I saw the body, it looked like a mannequin from where I was standing. I didn't get to talk to the local TV media that showed there, I was way to young.

It is said that he basically cruised the school yard until he saw an opportunity, jumped out of his vehicle and grabbed her, basically dragging her along, crying, into his murder van. I’m guessing he used his Authority Figure ploy he had tried with others. In fact, he was probably wearing the Fire Department wind breaker he had, with the name badge Richard Burton. I could easily see him lying to Kimberley and telling her she either in trouble or there was a family emergency etc. to get her to co-operate.

  • @Cheryltwin2012

I don't think Kimberly Leach was Bundy's youngest victim. Perhaps she was his youngest confessed victim, but I truly believe that Bundy killed Ann Marie Burr back in 1961 in Washington. He always denied it, but Bundy was so good at playing mind games that he probably confessed to her murder without people even realizing he did. She was eight years old when she went missing and her body has never been found. Thanks for this video, Scott. I think it's about time we had some TH-camrs who concentrate on the victims instead of ghoulishly giving all the attention to the killers.
