I love this, but so many homesteading channels are focusing on freeze driers instead of dehydrating like they used to. While this video DID provide instructions for both (and I so appreciated that!) I wish more videos had more than just the freeze dry instructions.
Liver and onions was a childhood staple in our house! I absolutely loved it... when i use to go to daycare back in the 80's they actually use to serve it at the daycare and I was the ONLY child there who would ask for seconds... SOOO GOOD!
I dehydrate raw liver slices until they are crispy dry, and keep them in the freezer to use as treats for my dog. They are dry enough to carry round in my pocket and the neighborhood doggies love them too (with permission).
👍 If you don't like the flavour of liver, try mincing it up and adding it to beef mince for bolognese sauce, or meatballs, or chilli con carne, etc. Start with 2 parts beef to 1 part liver, and adjust from there. Bacon bits also go well with liver, so try adding 2 parts of bacon bits to the mince/liver combo, and adjust from there. Also helps to stretch the beef which is a lot more costly than liver
we have some rabbit liver. I like the idea of not cooking the liver before freeze-drying. Thanks for the tips and the tip on increasing the temperature.
Hmm, I have liver and heart from a cow of ours. I only have a dehydrator and never considered I could get it dry enough to powder while keeping the benefits of it… maybe I should
I am not a fan of liver, but this is a great ideal. I made fire cider, so I dried the items after it was strained, then powdered it up. I made some capsules from it.
I have a bottle of freeze-dried raw beef organs, my question is the worry about parasites? What do you all think? I’m getting a lot of mixed info on the internet.
@MelissaKNorris, do you think pork or chicken liver would be ok to use? We raise our own pigs and chicken for meat. I would like to use our meat instead of other sources.
My dehydrator is a hand-me-down from hubby's Granny and doesn't have a temp setting on it. I'm going to assume this means it probably isn't safe to do raw meat in it?
I would suggest after the food processor then use something like a NutriBullet900. I have both and the NB dose a better job powdering. Also could you pack more into the pill using like a pencil eraser. just a thought
@@MelissaKNorrisHow many pounds of beef liver are used for the above video? I'm looking at different buying options that charge per pound but I'm wanting to conceptualize just how far each pound will go. Thank you for your help! Love the video!
Im curious why you use the glass jars rather than non breakable storage options. You do realize that you live in earthquake territory. We dont have them often, but when we do, they're on the larger sizes.
What brand of freeze dry machine do you recomend? I have a dehydrator. What is the biggest difference between a dehydrator & freeze dryer? Do you think there is there enough of a difference to get one?🤔
I don't touch meat, fish , dairy or eggs but I do feed them to my dog. Just trying to figure out how to cut it in tiny peaces for my homemade dog food.
When looking into what amounts of vitamins and minerals we can get from taking 3000mg (0.1058219 ounces) of beef liver in a supplement form (which is a standard serving size) we unfortunately cannot really find out! Converting milligrams to grams and then determining nutrient content per gram is complex and requires specific data. Nutrient content can vary significantly based on factors like the animal's diet, age, and how the liver was processed. While we know beef liver is nutrient-dense, precise figures for such a small quantity are generally not available in standard nutritional databases. While we can't provide exact figures, we can tell you that 3000mg (or 3 grams) of beef liver is a relatively small amount. While it will still contain some vitamins and minerals, it's unlikely to be a significant source of nutrients compared to a larger serving. So skip the beef liver supplements. I learned the hard way, health wise and dollar wise.
According to USDA, raw beef liver is 70% water and has, e.g., 4mg zinc per 100g serving. So to get 4mg of zinc, you need to eat 100g raw liver. But once dehydrated, that same 4mg of zinc is in 30g of powder. But you are still correct in that, at 500mg per capsule, you'd only be getting about 0.07mg zinc per capsule! Compared to the zinc supplement I buy which has 25mg per tablet, the beef liver capsules are worthless. It needs to be eaten in large quantities as food. I find everything tastes okay if you wait until you are really hungry before you eat!
Not true for me. My mom loved liver & fixed it often as I was a child. I'm now 53 years old now & have tried it many times over the years & I just can't eat it.
We had liver when i was growing up. I never liked it. By the age of 4 I refused to eat it and mom gave me that same plate of food for 4 days thinking eventually I would get hungry enough to eat it. That never happened! 😂
@@janicemoyer854 Wow... Somehow that sounds counter productive. When's the last time you've tried it? How did she cook it? Was it the taste or texture you didn't like? How about liverwurst or liver sausage on crackers? Have you ever eaten that?

That's because it lasts longer.
Technology gets that reaction.
The same reason so many people drive to work rather than bike or walk to work.

I love being able to make my own beef liver powder.
Instead of slicing the liver I just puree it and freeze dry it. 😊
Then you eat cook or swallow
Thank you for the info about customizing the high temp!
Great video. I don’t like it with onions, but liver soaked in milk and then put into a stew is wonderful. Over some rice..great👌🏾
Thank you for this I’ve been trying to figure out how to get my family on beef liver!!
More power to you folks who can and do 😊

Thankyou for the info. How many. capsules do you take a day?
If I opened up one of these and pulled it open over their food would that be cool? And what would the time if I put into the deep freezer?
As I sit here munching on my freeze dried beef liver. I love our freeze-dryer.
Would this be good for sprinkling in other dishes? I’m wondering if would need to be cooked first?

Nope

I've lived here my whole life, all the earthquakes, no jar breakage. I use glass because it's superior.
It's there no problem using the liver raw?
Would you put oxygen absorbers or silica packets in the mason jar with the powder?
I haven't found they're needed if using within a year
According to Penn State University, as long as you vacuum seal the jar, an oxygen absorber is unnecessary.

Can you do the same with pork liver? We raise pigs for meat & I hate liver. We usually have lots of livers in the freezers & I'd like to try this.
You need to stay away from pork and only people who are blood type O can really benefit from liver
If you did pork I would cook it first since the freeze dryer can't get up to 160.
I grew up on liver and imo, it’s the best tasting meat out there.
yum Hot Chocolate, LOL Thanks for a chuckle. Labels do a body good.
Thanks for this video! ❤ can’t wait to make my own.
I hate Beef liver BUT I love lambs liver with bacon, onions and gravy with mashed potatoes and greens - yummm
Can you do the very same thing with other organ meat? Hearts, etc.
Yes
What about pathogens? Freeze drying is not killing them
Seems like a lot of work, why not put it in a pepper shaker and use it in food?
Am I too lazy?
I think your food would have a livery after taste. Not sure I'd want to sprinkle it on fries or a salad :)
Because it would be exposed to air and reconstitute
I love liver , onions and BACON!
I can’t eat, smell or have anything to do with liver. 😣😹I know it’s supposed to be good, but I can’t get past the taste or smell.
