Bear in mind that 7 out of ABBA's 9 UK No.1s were in the 1970s.
1970s UK was just about as competitive a music market as you could get. They were competing with *peak* Queen, Bowie, Elton John, Led Zep, Bee Gees, Police, Blondie, Carpenters, Pink Floyd etc. and they had more No.1 hit singles than any of them (no disrespect at all to the latter, they're all amazing - it's just a stat). Simon & Garfunkel, Lennon, McCartney and George Harrison were all still writing and releasing their own stuff too. Elvis and Tom Jones were still releasing big hits. You had the likes of Billy Joel, Dire Straits, The Eagles, Bob Marley, Sex Pistols all starting to make a name for themselves.
Similar levels of success elsewhere in the world too - Europe, Australia, Japan ...
Yet the US barely appreciated them. Only Dancing Queen hit No.1 and most of the rest of their classics were only minor hits at the time. Could never quite understand that...

@Al Pine - 21st Century Heretic No other music artist/group sold more records than ABBA in the 70's. ABBA outsold them all.
As far as America goes......it was very «uncool» to like ABBA. 😐

@@bachatamusica Well, they tried to get by with a couple TV appearances, which has never worked here in this country. And when they finally broke through in this market with Dancing Queen, they got labeled a 'disco' group, so half the country wouldn't listen to them after that anyway.
People don't always remember how starkly those disco v. no-disco lines were drawn in those days. I grew up in Pittsburgh, which won the World Series in 1979, with We Are Family as its theme. No one said anything about it, because Willie Stargell (who picked the song) was that loved. But by the 1980 season, after Stargell retired, the club had a promotion for one game - bring in a disco 45 and get free admission. They collected thousands of disco records that day, and the club some how managed to blow them all up during the seventh inning stretch without damaging centerfield, lol. The Pirates might not ever win again, but they weren't going to be known as a disco team anymore, lol.

This is an intricate song and complex on many levels. Great example of how Benny was a perfectionist on making every song just that little more different with the production/layering of instruments as well as the vocals. Orchestral overdubs like that were added last, in post-production. They were pretty basic in recording though - piano, lead guitar, rhythm guitar.

ABBA had a Yamaha GX-1 (one of only 40 ever made) in their private studio along with an ARP Odyssey and Minimoog - in this video Benny is playing a Polymoog but I don't think they ever recorded with it. The Intro and Verse riff is almost certainly GX-1. The trumpet is a real trumpet.

B&B never allowed their music to be sampled for a new track. Only the Fugees and Madonna got lucky

how nice to see you at the beginning of the weekend
and with an extraordinary song by ABBA, which has many peculiarities:
    1) I think it's the first in which each of the girls sings a verse as lead voice
    2) the video was recorded at Agnetha and Björn's home, because Agnetha was very late in her second pregnancy (that's why maybe she's sitting and cared for in the picture)
    3) "The name of the game" was released in October 1977, a month before "ABBA The Album" and the movie "ABBA The Movie"
It was a bold gamble from ABBA, it opened their horizons and spread beyond pop.
You have already heard songs from that album, ABBA's most versatile:
    Thank you for the music
    Take a chance on me
    The name of the game
the fantastic "Eagle" of almost 6 minutes that opens the album
and the most surprising rock piece "Hole in your soul"
this are all different and bright, and there are many more:
"Move on" or "One man One woman"
But now, if I have to suggest a new song to future reactions, I think it's time to see ABBA in Concert:
    live in London 1979
    "Does your mother know"
    & "Hole in your soul"
are in the best 8 minutes that I heard in music
I recommend them, both are unmissable, believe me!
    th-cam.com/video/JEyYTANSPj4/w-d-xo.html
I follow you in your videos sharing the passion for ABBA's music
    A big hug from

"The Name of the Game", first called "A Bit of Myself", was the first
song to be recorded for ABBA's fifth studio album, following the band's
European and Australian tour. It was their most complex composition yet, with Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad sharing the lead vocals but with solo passages from both women and
contained the influences of the laid-back California sound of the day.
The opening riff on bass and synthesizer is inspired by Stevie Wonder's "I Wish" from the 1976 album Songs in the Key of Life, and both Andersson and Ulvaeus have acknowledged being inspired by Wonder's music during this part of ABBA's career.
A preliminary version of "The Name of the Game" was worked into the 1977 feature film ABBA: The Movie, for which it was written. When it was eventually finished, it was released as the lead single from Abba: The Album in October 1977. Originally, another track entitled "Hole in Your Soul" was intended for release, but those plans were soon shelved. "The Name of the Game" was released with a live version of "I Wonder (Departure)" as the B-side. This B-side was one of several songs written for the mini-musical The Girl with the Golden Hair, written by Ulvaeus and Andersson and originally performed by ABBA on their 1977 world tour. "The Name of the Game" single was recorded at Sydney Showground, Sydney, Australia on 3 or 4 March 1977. A studio recorded version of the song was included on ABBA: The Album.

My favourite ABBA song, just beating The Winner Takes It All. Winner is great but it's almost an Agnetha solo number (not a bad thing by any means!). Name gives both Agnetha and Frida a chance to shine. It was released in October 1977 as the lead single from the forthcoming ABBA: The Album (which tied-in with ABBA: The Movie). It showcased how Benny and Bjorn were becoming ever more sophisticated as songwriters.

That change in the music that you love so much when you said there it go it's called a crescendo a crescendo is a change from one Melody to another Melody with melodic transfer without giving up and making the song sound like a bad transfer it is done by a great music writers who are simply geniuses at what they do this is your past and you need to pursue it in greater means just for the benefit of your doubts and just to understand the music and be grateful for it really listen to it

I decided to take my 2015 Summer vacation and chose Sweden and a HUGE factor in that decision was ABBA and discovering there was a museum in Stockholm dedicated to them. I spent probably half the day there and it was totally worth it and the highlight of a 12 day trip. As far as Name of the Game, the overall composition and emotion really did it and I've always liked this video. Can't wait to see the rest! Much Respect!!

Acoustic and electric guitars being played in the same song is extremely common. For the entire history of both rock and country there has been the mixing of acoustic and electric guitars in the same song. I know this for a fact as over the past 50 years we have done that in the bands I have been in. So, you weren't wrong, you heard both.

It was getting a lot of push from local radio stations, but I heard it enough to remember Frida's part when I heard it again several decades later. I liked the video so I watched a few more times. Now, it's gone from one of their least memorable to my favorite ABBA song.
Appreciate you reacting to this one. If you want the full ABBA experience, you'll have to react to 'When I Kissed the Teacher.' Not a serious song, but they have a lot of fun with it. Thank you for sharing your reaction 🌷🌷🌷🌷It came out 1977 and I always thought it was one of the songs that had a more 'American" touch, even their English pronounciation sounds more American😉 I love this song❤
Agnetha was working as a dashboard girl at a car dealership when she was 16 years old living in Jönköping and touring with a dance band. One of her idols growing up was Connie Francis.
Agnetha's solo debut came when the was 17 years old with this song (English subtitles):

If you want to hear acoustic and electric guitars in perfect unison, try "Toccata" by Sky. Kevin Peek on electric and world-renowned classical guitarist, John Williams, on acoustic. The track also features Tristan Fry on drums, Herbie Flowers on Bass and Francis Monkman on keyboards.

The acoustic guitar Bjorn nearly always played but the Electric guitar was mainly down to a guy named Lasse ( pronounced Lassie)Wellander.

If as a writer when you are completed with ABBA, some places to go to could include Kate Bush, Squeeze(/ Difford and Tilbrook) for musical performances that tell stories.

You heard an electric guitar. There's even a really rare version of this song that has more emphasis on the electric guitar and it has a bit of a heavier sound.

I like «The Name Of The Game» from ABBA :The Movie, better than the official video. 😁 Much more interesting, in my opinion.
The line is «I was an impossible case».......not a pain. 😄Lol

Thanks foe the ABBA. I think what I like most about this song is how both girls get a little solo part. 2nd favorite thing are the harmonies. I know you've probably got tons of ABBA requests. But If you want to change it up a little do "Why Did It Have To Be Me" live in Australia. Make sure it's the live clip. Agnetha was not on stage and Frida proceed to steal the show. It's done more as a schlager type song than a typical ABBA song too.

    Yes!
Back in the olden days people would use both accoustic and electric guitars!
Nowadays some prick called 'Slush Fiddy,' or Sean Coombes make all their music on a computer!
None of these new rich stars can even play an instrument!
    None.

This is indeed a good and very well crafted pop song (i.e. what pop meant in the 1970s). But acoustic and electric guitar on the same track was not really unique to Abba. I know that Sweet, Heart, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, Joni Mitchell, Mike Oldfield and others used it too, in the 1970s. (I'm no pop connoisseur, but I would guess, Beatles, Queen, ELO, and similar bands as well.)
