I wasn't familiar with the term and always assumed it meant there used to be a paper mill at that location. Industrial area, makes sense. So this was a pleasant surprise.
He really got me when he saw the business card and was able recognize the what the angels facing one another symbolized.
That’s because most people weren’t able to, or just wouldn’t pause the movie to catch it. He might not be as brilliant as you are giving him credit for… Still my favorite reactor 🤷🏾♂️

The book ends differently. He actually does wake up in an asylum and thinks it was all a dream until an orderly whispers, “we’ll get you out Mr Durden.”

He definitely picked on a ton of the inconsistencies and clues, a lot of which I didn’t catch on multiple watches, like Tyler getting out of the passenger side even though he was driving when they crashed.

This has been the most entertaining reaction to this movie I have ever seen, what does it say about me that I found utter joy in witnessing someone I consider better read and educated struggle against their own intellect to comprehend what they are seeing for the first time.

Your attention to detail and knowledge of things like paper street gave you an insight into this movie early on. Also your photographer's eye and Asperger's (as you put it) give you a different perspective I think.

Yeah this movie is really interesting to watch for the 2nd time, because all of the signs are there but it's never obvious.

Wow... you were picking up on such small details that I've NEVER noticed, like the no incoming calls etc. and the Paper Street. You are incredibly perceptive. When I went to see this film, my mate and myself thought it was just going to be a punch him up fight movie, and felt like we got slapped in the face when the twist was revealed haha. Loved your reaction.

I was watching one of the developers of Knights of the Old Republic give a talk about narrative twists, and he said that if your twist is actually well-written, about 10% of your audience will figure it out before it happens.
Fun fact Brad Pitt said to surprise him and Edward Norton hit him in the ear as an imporv. It worked so well they left it in the movie. Great moment.

What a great movie! Saw it three weeks in a row in the theater!! The movie did exactly what Tyler did! It gives something very true that you agree with and then buries you in piles of BS! Just like any good cult leader would!! Definitely in my top ten movies!!

I'm glad you mentioned needing to watch the movie again because I was definitely going to suggest it. You pick up on so much more the second time around, although I think you did get most of it the first time, to be fair.
I was pretty sure you'd figure it out. But you did give yourself a couple false clues that led to the same outcome anyway. When Marla said "That night you came to play doctor", she was referring to the scene where she asked Edward Norton's Tyler to check her breasts for lumps. But yeah, as soon as you started focusing on Paper Street and the duality symbolism, I was like "yeah, he's gonna figure it out early". Bravo, sir. You definitely dumped your stat points on Perception and Intelligence.
He regained the stat points he lost with Who's on First?.

Exercise would definitely put him to sleep. That's what helped to keep me sane while I was locked up. Anytime that I would find myself getting tangled up in my own thoughts and starting to feel anxious or restless, I would hit a few sets of burpees and it would really help me to rest and relax afterwards.
Exercise might help, but the underlying issue is the severe mental illness. Based on what we see, I suspect he has Dissociative Identity Disorder and some form of Bipolar. Probably Bipolar Depression, as he seems to alternate between depression and mild mania. Since the film is being told by an unreliable narrator, It is hard to know if (or how much) psychosis is present; who and what is actually real?
We are told that he sleeps like a baby after the support groups. He's probably trying to deal with a lot of anxiety. Exercise probably wouldn't help much unless he is reaching the "runner's high". I know from experience that the released neurochemicals can be VERY helpful with anxiety.

He over always over analyzes to the point some of his reactions are unwatchable.
This one was that way for me. I quit at about 16 minutes in. Just way, way, WAYYYYY too much over analyzing everything. I get you have to make commentary, but this was just to the point of frustration. He's beating his head against a wall over and over and over trying to figure out stuff that will be answered in mere minutes @@GaryLBlakeley

Never knew that fact about Paper Street, makes perfect sense once you’ve seen the movie
I consider myself a reasonably educated dude *and in fact showed Fight Club to my English classes for years* and I never knew what a "paper street" was, nor noticed half of the, in retrospect, very obvious breadcrumbs the director was leaving. Good man. Admittedly, you have a penchant for over-thinking in your reactions, giving films way too much credit for accidental or incidental imagery or choices, so it's great to see you battling with a movie that rewards frame-by-frame analysis.
The first scene in the movie is a neuron misfiring inside edward nortons' brain. It's a pretty big clue itself.

From this reaction I can honestly say I now think that Mr Lboyd is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay smarter than the average bear, holy heck you caught so much stuff on your first watch through that took me at least 3 watches to notice.

True, but it's much easier to freeze frame and think out loud than to catch it all on the fly. I've watched five times and still catch subtleties.

What I like about the story is that his mental illness leads to him forming a cult of equally disturbed people. Then he turns them into a terrorist group and his realization of what he's done leads to his moment of clarity. But the crazy version of himself anticipated that might happen, so even though he's clear minded he can't stop what he put in motion. So he figures "I might as well enjoy the show" and stands there with his gf, watching the buildings come down.
My man, your eye for detail is exemplary! So many things I have not noticed even after 8 or so rewatches.

I think you were like 80% there at the beginning when you saw a close-up of Tyler's business card. Paper Street...the two angels looking at each through a mirror...the 555 number...the ying-yang furniture. You noticed all of that.

Seeing your logical reaction to one of the most amazingly illogical movies ever made was a treat to watch.
You are the FIRST to get the duality so fast! I never got "paper street" till today.
I think the first two rules of fight club are a commentary on the feelings of dissatisfaction and displeasure that can build up in the underbelly of a society. Things you are not supposed to talk openly about yet are mutually experienced, will continue to spread/build and eventually erupt to the surface of society if not addressed. You can see this eruption present itself in people finally standing up to oppression or tyranny through thoughtful political activism but it can also present itself through violence and destruction. We've seen both throughout history for different reasons and motivations. I think Fight Club spoke to sentiments felt by men leading up to Palahniuk writing the book but it is also relevant and resurfacing today as society continues to change. I could be wrong but I find the fight club's growing despite the first to rules to be quite clever commentary and a warning that unaddressed issues run the risk of being destructive.
They build up to the reveal really well. What makes the movie feel so wrong on the first viewing is Tyler's actions are the Narrators actions.
You did a very good job of recognising a lot of the issues with the continuity of events that the Narrator was presenting. Noticing early on that no one but the Narrator was looking at Tyler was an excellent catch. That "splicing single frames" idea that Tyler had was utilised more than you realised in this cut of the video.
This is such a strange movie.
Huge chance. If you were put in the situation where emotionally you couldn't stand it anymore and someone pointed you to one of these circles, you'd try it at least. Sometimes if done correctly, it can be one of the most useful psychological tools btw.

I’m so glad I caught the premiere. I was excited to see you were reacting to this and wanted to see if it kind of blew your mind a bit. It’s a crazy movie and similar to you about half way through I was like what is this even about is this a real movie? And by the end I was like well I’m definitely going to have to watch this again. Similar to Shutter Island and Inception.

I never knew the paper St info which would help in figuring it out but I didn't get it till the guy in the bar called him Mr durden, mind you I was extremely drunk at about 3am when I first watched it. That moment blew my mind!
It’s a masterpiece. The storytelling, cinematography, acting and score are all perfectly aligned. It should be held as one of the greatest pieces of cinema of all time.
It’s a shame that you had to watch it and pause to do reactions. It needs to be watched and absorbed without interruption
The main theory is that "The Narrator" created Tyler Durden as a child.
To be the type of man his father could be proud of. The two worked in harmony with Tyler having the morning shift and The Narrator with nights.
What disrupted their harmony was the narrator going to support groups for help when noticing his insomnia, causing Tyler to take action.
The movie is about deep themes and call aheads. The table is thematic, the disposable cups, the constantly changing self referenced name of the narrator.
The whole movie is supposed to make you feel the halfawake half asleep state you drift in while suffering insomnia.

Tyler Durden is up there with Patrick Bateman on the list of satire subjects mistaken for heroes by morons. Fight Club is a fantastic call-out of BS "masculinity," and transparent, 2D bro-philosophy, and I love it.

saw this in high school - but it hit harder watching it 20 years later.
Tyler is teaching them to break the rules. That's why he has the rule "Don't talk about Fight Club", because he knows they will break it.
I never knew that Paper Street thing. So for me it never was a clue. But the 1 frame Tylers, were always very telling. :D
If you don't understand, or would never go to a survivors group to talk about your life to try and find support for what you are going through, then you are probably the type of person that doesn't believe in, or would go to therapy or see a psychologist. They are very similar in the sense of getting help and support for problems and issues that life throws at you. It's okay if it's not for you, but survivor groups, therapy, and self-help groups can very much help people work through things.
When I first saw this movie I was convinced that Marla Singer didn't actually exist. The last scene confirms she does because the other gus in the room interact with her, however I think the story works so much better if you assue Marla Singer is just a figment of his imagination.
Paper Street is Paper Mill Road in Newark DE, The research for this book was done between all the Bank Campuses in Newcastle County Delaware, where all the major US banks have Corporate Representation. There were old buildings on a road across from the old closed papermill that was known for squatters. In the scene where they are busting out car windows they list three towns I work between two of them and third is just over the river in New Jersey.

I had to watch it twice, once to be confused untill the ending, the second for it to become one of my favorite movies of all time. I'm guessing many people did the same.
You literally just met the most legendary intellectual director that messes up with the viewers the most ! Definitely his best film! The details are crazy !! Late 90s were insane, Matrix with fight club was so unreal! And then lord of the rings. Wtf ?
I do think there were two extra manifestations of his psyche in 'Tyler' and 'Marla', the externalized yin and yang inside his mind. Marla is just as, if not more significant as Tyler. he did let her survive, after all
Tyler is toxic masculinity, while Marla is the feminine side asserting dominance. This is why his image matches hers at the end. Look at the two of them side by side.

Chuck Palahniuk wrote the novel (my favorite author) and he always writes about people that most of us would never want to assiciate with. So, your assessment of the narrator is exactly what hes going for haha
I'd argue this Brad Pitt role is VERY close to being, if not on par with his role in 12 Monkeys. Underrated sci-fi Bruce Willis movie with a FANTASTIC role played by Brad Pitt!

It's almost annoying how seemingly perfect Brad Pitt is. I wanted to hate him when I was younger because it felt almost unfair how talented and good looking his is, but then you never hear a bad word about him.
Not to mention, he was like the only person who straight up openly stood up to Harvey Weinstein and said that he would kill him after he learned that he was being sexually inappropriate with Gweneth Paltrow. He never even talks about it either...the only reason the story is public is because other people saw it. It happened at the opening of Hamlet on Broadway back in the mid 90's.
It was thoroughly enjoying seeing you react to this movie for the first time. Its definitely a head trip and my first time watching it through I did not see the twist coming at all. Even now when i rewatch it, i have a hard time reconciling that Tyler doesnt actually exist...I know he's a figment of his imagination, but i get so engrossed in the movie that it almost feels like i made it all up and that Tyler is for sure real and i just got it wrong the last time. I love this movie. One of my all time favorites.

One of the best movies of the 90s and this was one of the best reaction vids. I tip my hat to you, sir.
The 90s were odd in that the cold war had ended, the Russians "were our friends now" to quote Terminator 2, the internet was promised to turn the world into a cosy global village, America had a young president with a teenage daughter and everybody was dancing at raves. Everything was dandy. And this movie felt like one big middle finger to that perception.
This is my favorite movie ever. It’s such a mind f***. Watch it again. They did a brilliant job. There are no slip ups. Lots of hints along the way, but they never mess up.

This movie is a great one to watch reactions to, and yours has by far been the best. I knew with your analytical mind you'd pick up on it before the reveal, but watching you piece it together was amazing. Personally I knew nothing of "paper street", and I wasn't trying to figure it out like this so the reveal caught me totally off guard This movie is... special ha ha. Great reaction! Oh and P.S. That thing he said about sticking in single frames in kids movies? They did that here. Those flashes you were seeing... don't pause during them unless you want to see that and real life nasty gore. There are some truly disturbing single frames in this movie.

I know some of the old paper mills had roads named after them but I don't think it was just Paper Street . Maybe Paper Mill rd or something but that was in last century type roads ..sometimes even dirt roads in the 30's leading to the paper mill

Watch again, he's not. He's _pushing himself_ backwards with his feet. He has one of his own hands on the collar of his jacket and he's pulling that, and the motive force to move him along the ground is coming from his legs. Just like when he beat himself up other times, he throws himself into various positions, punches himself, and so on.

You have your kelvin scale backwards. 6500k is really bluish white and around 2700k is a typical yellow incandescent light. You want lower kelvin light in the evening to go to sleep.
