That’s not it at all it’s about freedom too do whatever you want with no consequences whatsoever being free too pursue whatever it is you want in life no matter what and letting you know that the only person that gets in the way is you
There are a lot of hints through the whole film that they're the same person, most of them in scenes involving Marla. But to me the most interesting one is when he's hitting himself in the boss' office and he says it for some reason reminded him of his first fight with Tyler
you know what? if my theory not wrong, when he hitting himself is actually he doesn't fake it, but he actually hit by his split Tyler (Brad Pitt), cmiiw
Fight Club is infinitely rewatchable. Not only are there countless clues and easter eggs but the acting and dialogue is so good that it always captures your attention.
@@OfficialMediaKnights then thing is with fight club, the second time you know the end and so many scenes are suddenly way different because you know, it is allmost like watching a new movie
You guys' utter shock on the Tyler Durden twist is so amazing to watch! Because that's what it felt like when we saw it in the theater. Like a wave of wtf.
Haha thank you so much, so glad you enjoyed our utter wtf moment. Can't believe we didn't catch on earlier, now that we think back on it, it was so obvious. It must have been so thrilling to see it in theatres, I can only imagine!!
@@OfficialMediaKnights When you asked, 'was he just fighting himself?' and kind of chuckling before the reveal that he was. Fact is, you've seen it before. When he fought himself in front of his boss.
@@ps3udologue he literally says "for some reason I'm reminded of my first fight with Tyler." When you rewatch so many comments you didn't think about on that first watch click into place.
Edward Norton actually hit Pitt in the ear the first time they fought and the entire scene was unscripted with Pitt complaining about the hit and Edward apologizing even saying 'i'm sorry man i messed it up' then Pitt saying 'nah that's perfect' and punched him really hard in the gut
@@Assassin_No_9 SUCH a huge change lol. I think his point was it wasn't some unscripted moment of method acting genius. It was done almost exactly as described.
The crying and best sleep part always gets me. I got out of the military after 12 years (Signal Corps Hooah) and I was going on about 2 years of an existential crisis of Who Am I, Why I am not important anymore. Just sitting in my moms basement, hiding from the world. Then I had my breakdown moment, let out the best cry Ive had since I was kid. It felt like a pressure gauge was released. I stepping out on the porch, sun washing over my face and drying my tears. "Everything is going to be alright". That next month I got a front desk job as an overnight night audit. Sperlunk a few places around Milwaukee. A good cry, can add perspective. Just don't get addicted...
Wow! Thank you for sharing. Yeah…sometimes life can be a little too much we just gotta remember to not be so hard on ourselves and hey…if you need a good cry then go for it! One step at a time ❤️
Signals intel ? I met a few American guys at a camp in the Stan once who worked in that field. Skills I will never understand. We bonded over our love of gaming, specifically Unreal Tournament. We even had a impromtu LAN party one weekend. They even had a mobile pizzahut. America is weird & over-supplied but friendly.
It is weird when people catch the flashes of Tyler in the beginning before he meets Tyler but just brush it off. It is also amazing that everyone (including myself) watch him fight himself in the boss's office, with the movie literally pausing as he throws himself into the glass shelves to state "for some reason, this reminded me of my first fight with Tyler" and not even flinch. I guess it is sensory overload of what all is happening and how well it is shot that distracts away from it.
This film is a master in misdirection even with blantant clues, I've seen some people get there with the correct theory before the reveal, but I think it's impossible to get every clue and process everything happening throughout first time without some amount of context. So I think we just move on from each blip to process the next thing and hopefully get more.
@@pnut3844able i was actually saying "is he tyler durden" ever since tyler durden called him back at a pay phone bc thats not possible, and thought back to the flashes of someone wearing a red jacket, kept telling my friend the whole movie theyre probably the same person but was still infinitly shocked at the reveal lmao
Fight Club...my favorite movie OF ALL TIME. In college, I wrote a report comparing the Bhagavad Gita and Fight Club. I got an A+ on it. Most people do not get this movie, how deep it really is, the philosophical threads that run through it. I encourage you to watch it again, then again. You will catch things you missed the first few times. It's GENIUS. It's also responsible for making me such a huge Edward Norton fan LOVE this movie.
Loved it the first time, loved it while editing it, and can’t wait to rewatch it again and catch even more. The themes go deeper than you initially believe and I love films that do that. This is one of those very well written and incredibly executed films. So glad we watched it ❤️
I rented this flick and watched it twice in a row just to grab all the themes and hints and all the little details, definitely agree it's the best way to do it. I can appreciate the Tao present in some of the perspectives too.
Weird.. I love this movie too and I bought the book after even though I don't like reading. That and I have read at least the intro to Bhagavad Gita when I was friends with some Krishnas.
I met Chuck Palahniuk in 1995 at the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle when he hadn't published anything yet, and he was describing his first novel, Fight Club and read a bit from it. I thought at the time it sounded like one of the craziest things I'd ever heard. What a great novel and film.
Wooow that's such a cool story!!! I can only imagine how crazy that might have sounded at first - so glad we got to watch this movie, we're definitely gonna get the book too!
@@bryandaves1005 I felt the ending was better film wise but the book had a great ending as well. The whole thing where they get the liposuction fat from in the book was way better.
I think the book in the movie are equally good. However, the book has what you might call the origin of Tyler Durden and it’s quite interesting. I don’t want to spoil it, but this is not the first time this being has come to life.
"If you woke up in a different time and a different place, could you wake up as a different person?" is when we get our first full shot of Tyler. Also when Marla is questioning him over his scar she says, "That night you came over to my place to play doctor, what was really going on there?" you think wait what? and then are immediately distracted by Project Mayhem forming. You may also notice our main character is never given a name.
Their narrator doesn’t have a name because his real name is Tyler Durden. How else could he get on those flights? There must be some aspect of his split personality that makes him forget his real name at certain times.
The act of firing a gun in his own mouth was symbolic of really being able to let go of everything. This allowed the narrator (note that he has no name) to finally let go of the Tyler persona.
Yeah! I also love that you pointed out how he had no name throughout the film. It really showcases how he doesn’t even know who he’s supposed to be. In many ways Tyler Durden is way more real than our narrator. Until of course the very end. When he chooses who he wants to be. Such an incredible film!
I totally agree, but a symbolic willpower method used to overcome some mental situation may not be foolproof... I think we could infer that Tyler is still in there somewhere through that 1 frame flash before the cut to credits!
No! He's rejecting Tyler's directive to let everything go. "This is too much. I don't want this." He needs to kill the part of himself that thought the only way out of his shitty life was to lose all hope. When Tyler's gone, what does he do? He reaches out to take Marla's hand.
With multiple personality disorder, the other personality still wants to survive. Showing that you're willing to destroy both personalities can be enough to shock the other into retreating. Not recommended by therapists (obviously).
This reaction was GLORIOUS! This has been one of my favorite movies since I saw it in theater in 1999. Knowing what you now know, you need to re-watch. One of the most clever things in this movie, that makes me laugh every time, is toward the end, where the story rewinds a few moments, and Tyler again asks "Anything to say", and "Jack" (the narrator) responds "I STILL can't think of anything".
Oh man! I can imagine the audience reaction when this came out. Would’ve loved to be there. But I’m glad we got to watch this on our own time. Better late than never right? Such a clever film and story. Can’t wait to rewatch this 😃
@@OfficialMediaKnights watch the commentary.. The fx company call out that the narrator crawls out of the wrong side of the car after the crash..a huge hint. They said.. "just keep watching".lol
Now that you know the twist, watch it again (AND REACT TO IT 👍) and you’ll be blown away how it was always right in front of you. It’s absolutely enjoyable watching this movie again and seeing the bread crumbs in obvious view throughout the entire movie!
Finding the little clues throughout the entire film is gonna be a fun experience. This movie is something else! We were not expecting a twist like that 👏
If you want your mind blown for a 2nd time by this movie; watch it again already knowing that Tyler is an alternate personality, but pay extremely close attention to everything about Marla. Then decide if Marla is real or another alter.
@@youtubeusername5 Probably because the filmmakers never intended it, nor did the author of the book. I never buy fan theories about things the film itself never cops to. There's four commentaries on the disc, and none of them even suggest this.
One of my favorite little hints is the car accident. When they're crawling out of the wreck afterwards, Tyler climbs out of the passenger side rather than the driver's side, where he had been sitting.
Glad you guys enjoyed. This is a completely different movies the second time around and I can't recommend that enough (the only other thing I've seen that comes close is THE USUAL SUSPECTS). They actually give you little clues and breadcrumbs along the way, but they do a great job of pulling you out before you have a chance to think about it too much. Excellent writing. The whole dynamic with Marla is insane.
Ahh man! Can’t wait to rewatch this again and catch everything we missed the first time around. The context changes completely now. I love when a film is smart enough to allow the audience to catch up and then gives them the opportunity to explore deeper by rewatching with even more meaning than the first time around. Truly well written. And a film were so glad we watched!
I'm sure it's already buried in the nearly 200 other comments, but you asked so...probably the most blatant "I can't believe I didn't notice that!" scene was after "Tyler" crashed their car and it went sliding down the embankment. When you watch it back, note that Brad Pitt pulls Edward Norton out of the _drivers_ side door of the car when it finally came to a rest. Side note: by the time this movie was released (and even when the book was written), movie theaters had long since stopped switching reels during showings. Instead, the individual reels of film were spliced together upon receipt at each theater, then played off a large rotating platter through the projector, eventually re-spooling onto another large platter. Nowadays with mostly digital projectors not even that is required. (I worked as a projectionist in the early 1990s)
Whooa that's such a cool side note, thanks so much for sharing! The embankment crash moment was SO CLEAR, it honestly amuses us now that we never noticed that! We are barraged with so much stimuli throughout the film that it's easy to miss those things, which speaks volumes on the excellence of its directing!
Awesome reaction, it's so rare for me to find people that haven't experienced this film. I had a mile-wide grin on my face when Tyler's identity was coming together and watching you two begin to realize, so good!
Hahaha gah that reveal had us shocked to silence!! We're pretty good at anticipating plot twists so for us to be blindsided like that is definitely such a refreshing feeling!! Thanks so much for the support, we appreciate you!!
Love this brilliant batshit film! Also, your comments about how near the end he couldn't know "who's in on it" and who's trustworthy made me realize something really funny/interesting. Fight Club and Project Mayhem is "men only." It's very unconditionally "men only." So the Narrator could've easily ensured he wasn't dealing with secret members of the cult if he'd just made a point to ONLY speak with women and seek help from women. Tyler's earlier comment about how "I wonder if another woman is really the answer to our problems" is ironic, because by the end of the story, the answer is a definite YES. :)
That’s true! He should’ve trusted a woman with that info towards the end. I was really starting to feel a bit paranoid about everyone. Everybody seemed like they were a member and most of them were! It’s terrific the way this movie switched it’s tones. Like you said the moments where they go absolutely batshit in tandem with the message really makes this film 👌
This is a super rare movie that gives you this mind blowing, first watch twist, but then a completely new and just as incredible second viewing experience. But it never gets old. We watched this movie 10 times back to back to back when it came out on video. (I’m old) Looking at just the scenes with Marla with this new perspective is nuts. But you find so many fascinating easter eggs every single time you watch this movie. It’s brilliant. Thank you for sharing your massively entertaining reaction!
David Fincher never disappoints 🎉 what a FANTASTIC movie ! Loved it the first time I watched it and I loved it again. Thanks for the watch along guys 😊
@31:23 -- I've never heard it articulated exactly that way. That was a really great point about the irony that they've all become anonymous slaves to a new system under Tyler when they were trying to escape that feeling. Always love seeing people's first reactions to Fight Club. You guys rock.
Thank you so much for watching with us! This is one of those films with a few messages that make you think. Really clever writing! Stay awesome my friend!
During the blitz hundreds of men who had been catatonic for years sometimes got up and started driving ambulances, clearing rubble and so on. Purpose can raise the effectively dead. That's what they were trying to get way from, lack of purpose. And purpose is something Tyler provided in spades.
It's also a commentary that when you live a life without purpose it's very easy for someone else to come along and fill that void with THEIR purpose instead of one of your own choosing.
I'm so glad to see a younger generation really appreciating this film. I watch some other gen z reacts and they were like, "This is weird. I don't get it." So I love that you two were feeling it.
Just something interesting to note: this movie is based off the author’s experiences with a group called the Cacophany Society which is actually a North American extension of the Dadaist art movement that first took hold in Europe during the turn of the century and into the 20s… it is often forgotten to time, but was very important to the art scene of that time and helped found the Surrealist movement… it was defined by art performances or installations that focused on the mundane and absurd, and sought to deconstruct culture… their art was considered dissident and anarchic, and a couple of performances even incited riots at the time
The narrator, in the beginning of the movie, stated to the doctor he was going through phases where he'd wake up in places and have no memory of how he got there. He was already switching out
I saw this movie twice in one day when it came out. I immediately rounded up all my friends to watch it the 2nd time and it's a totally different movie after you know the twist. Definitely in my top 5 of all time.
You guys are great! Ive seen other reactions of this movie and everyone is always trying to figure out what's next instead of just getting absorbed by the movie and letting the twist get ya in the end like it did to you guys. Felt like I was watching the movie for the first time again. A cult classic indeed. Also love the subliminal single frame inserts to subscribe, not sure if anyone noticed lol
Woow this is such a great compliment, thank you so much, that is what we strive for! Honestly, it's rare for us to not really see a twist coming, especially considering how this film really inspired so many other films to utilize the same twist to death (and not nearly as good, to be honest), so it was a trope we were very familiar with. But the way the film is structured, it truly just wants you to go along for the ride, not second-guess every moment. And we are so glad we just followed along, it made the ending one of the greatest twists we ever saw! Also yayyy we're so glad you picked up on that haha, we weren't sure if it was gonna be noticeable enough 😂😂😂
David Fincher ladies and gents. You should defo do his back catalogue. Se7en will blow your mind, The Game is brilliant too. Zodiac and Gone Girl are both master strokes. Fincher is in the top 3 cinematographer film makers working today (I'd put Denis Villeneuve in that list). His TV show Mindhunters about the formation of the Behavioural Sciences FBI division is fabulous. Best clue in Fight Club is where he is beating himself up in the boss' office and it pauses to say "for some reason this reminds me of my first fight with Tyler". Did you recognise Jared Leto as Blondie ?
The main idea for "Tyler" is to teach people to break all rules - that's why the first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club - and yet each day there more of them. Whole point of "Tyler" was to bring freedom and anarchy in people minds. And these desires comes straight from main character being tired of life by rules that he can't surpass. Watching it for second\third time makes plot much deeper and interesting.

Ok, the Subscribe flash at 32:45 and other spots was Genius! I loved the reaction at the Tyler Durdin reveal. This movie never gets old. Loving the channel.
The real plot twist that is hidden in plain sight is that Bob, Marla, & Tyler are all 3 personalities of Jack! He was diagnosed with testicular cancer & that's when his "perfect life" starting falling apart. His environment always matched his mind state at the time, example being his apartment. Bob represents the sobbing part of having testicular cancer. Marla represents accepting it (feminine), & Tyler represents fighting it (masculine). If y'all notice, Marla is the exact same as Tyler from smoking, wild hair, dark shades, & wearing fur a lot. She walks into traffic without looking, doesn't get hit. She smokes inside of buildings, whenever she wants. She knows things he does when she's not even around. When Bob is "shot" in the head, that was Jack's way of killing him off similar to how he does Tyler in the end. The only personality who is literally brought back to him, is Marla. They mirror each other's wardrobe at the end holding hands because he finally came to terms with his diagnosis. All the explosions & fighting in this movie was an interpretation of what he was going through in his head. All of the events are taking place inside of his head while he's getting ready to have surgery to have his manhood removed. The ending with the two buildings going down is the completion of his surgery. VERY MASTERFULLY DONE & CLEVER. BEST PLOT TWIST EVER! Please rewatch with an open mind and you'll see how Marla & Bob are often by themselves until Jack interacts with them & brings them out. Everytime the camera slow zooms in close to his face, that's when he's in his mind. Everything & everyone was in his mind most of the movie! MIND BLOWN!! 💥
There is a theory a youtuber came up with that gave me a whole new perspective on this movie. That biggest plot twist isn't "The narrator" is actually Tlyer Durden, but that Tyler actually had Testicular cancer, not sleep apnea, and cope he not only made up 1 other personality, but that Marla and Bob weren't real but his other personalities! And they were his constant reminder that he has Testicular cancer. (WhatisAntilogic: Fight club: The twist that no one noticed) Very intriguing
Fun theory but extremely unlikely, I mean you can pretty much come up with anything theory you want about fight club because the narrator is so unreliable (because he’s insane) but imo bob and Marla are 100% real people
I've come across a similar theory, but only pertaining to Marla. They (Tyler and Marla) represent the masculine vs feminine struggle that the narrator faces. I find it plausible, due to the scene with Marla standing in traffic. The cars go by as if she isn't there.
Here’s another fun layer to this. It’s entirely possible that Marla is also another alter ego of Edward Norton’s character (fans call him The Narrator or just Jack). Marla is the feminine part of him and Tyler is his masculine side. When you reapproach the film with this in mind it’s even crazier.
The best twist foreshadowing line to me is his narration as hes getting on the plane when we are introduced to tyler says "If you wake up at a different time, and a different place, could you wake up a different person?" And while hes beating himself up in his bosses office "For some reason I thought of my first fight with Tyler". The one most commonly cited is the note on the payphone reading "no incoming calls" as hes answering Tylers call.
Congrats on 10K!!! I'm so happy for you! And this reaction is gold, it's been a long time since I watched Fight Club and your reaction to the twist was perfection.

This movie's got its dull bits, but then there are these mind-blowing cinematic gems that just make it my absolute favorite. And let me tell you, watching your reaction was a good trip, especially seeing you navigate through the plot twist without a clue.
Thank you! We have a bunch of amazing films we now have the great opportunity to catch up on. It’s kind of our filmmakers homework haha and honestly we’re so glad we did! Thank you so much! I love this. The ending was spoiled for me before I seen it. I love the movie and the books but by now everyone has already seen the movie so I could never watch people’s expressions watching it for the first time. So this video allowed me to live vicariously through you guys hahah great stuff!
Outside of Marvel this is the movie that has been mentioned to me the most, ever, in my life. I wonder if that rumored sequel will ever take off. I forgot how much I liked this movie. I miss fighting movies. Remember Kickboxer, the sequels, and it's new film featuring Dave Bautista?
Yeah! That type of film was definitely more popular during the 90s and 00s. It’s always a bit nostalgic! This film had been recommended to us for ages. We are so glad we checked it out 😃
This is in my top 5 films of all time. I originally didn't want to see it, but my coworker convinced me to see it with him. The next day, I was late to work because I couldn't stop thinking about the film that night, so I couldn't sleep. My coworker was also late, for the same reason.
I love the car ride scene...because the dialogue works on THREE levels. Tyler is talking to (1)narrator (2)audience and (3)THE TWO GUYS IN THE BACK....and the dialogue works for ALL THREE, no matter which one you are! "Forget especially what you THINK you know about you and me...."
I saw this in a dollar theater on a first date in 2000. Went in expecting a Van Damme movie about dudes starting a club for fighting. Was mind blown. Luckily the girl on the date was a deep thinker with a great spirit. It's 24 years later and I'm so thankful this movie is the memory trigger and not a lower quality film. Thanks for the reaction
A fabulous movie and it's in my top 5 films ever. I don't think Brad Pitt gets enough credit for crushing this role. It turns out, some people REALLY DO have it all.
I can’t argue with you. This film is phenomenal. Both thematically and practically. How they wrote the script and how they chose to shoot it is masterful 👌
Love the channel, I usually cannot sanction the buffoonery of these reaction channels, but you guys are smart and chill and have valid reactions and input and I can see why people like the channel.
A lot of people forget that it's a love Story. Marla hints many times that she's looking for ultimate chaos and thrill. He offers it to her at the end the best way his twisted clever mind can and thinks is worth it. The split personality starts when he meets Marla... It's a beautiful twisted love story ;)
I walked out of the theater with a new favorite movie and nothing has knocked it off the top of my list more than 20 years later. It's also the first of three movies that I saw that made me realize David Fincher is my favorite director (also Seven and The Game). This movie is perfect.
@@OfficialMediaKnights Oh yeah I saw it too. "You're Mr Durden" may be the first time. Nice tribute 👌 OK, I'll stop commenting this video one day... Just osbessed by this movie.
This is one of my favorite movies and books. I loved what you said about the film splices of Tyler being put in at moments he needed Tyler. I've never thought of that before, but that's a great perception and very possible! Also, I love what Denise said about trading one system that enslaves you for another. I never thought of it that way before, but it's totally true. And I think so often that's what we do in society. Great reaction. Love you guys.
This is one of my favorite movies. It’s simply amazing. Not just the message but the way the director told the story. On a side note, if you want another mind f>ck for an ending…. Watch “Jacob’s Ladder” with Tim Robbins. Another great movie
Thank you for the suggestion! These types of movies are some of our personal favorites. We like a mind ending story! We’ll definitely give it a watch 😃
I love this movie. For years I had crippling insomnia and I would start losing it after not sleeping for a couple of days. Luckily I finally found a doctor that finally helped me out. I sleep fine now. When I saw this movie the first time I completely understand Ed Norton's character. I still watch this about once a year so thank y'all for reacting to this movie.
Thank you so much for watching! It truly means a lot to us. We both have had our fair share of insomnia especially during the past 2 years or so. Our sleep schedule is pretty messed up. Slowly getting better now after being more disciplined of when we go to sleep. Glad to hear you sorted it out!
And the way that the truth is shown or told in little bits that just pass by us and we don't even notice is really well done. "For some reason i thought about my first fight with Tyler".
If you guys liked this and want more Chuck, they made a passable adaptation of his other novel Choke with the inimitable Sam Rockwell in it… slightly funnier version of a story about someone addicted to a weird thing again. The books are almost always better but it’s worth a watch if you liked this one
Don't know if it's been said or not, but one of my favorite easter eggs is in the blips of Tyler that flash occasionally before they meet on the plane. It's not Brad Pitt, it's other people wearing the same outfit. As if Tyler hadn't fully formed yet. There's a theory that not only is Tyler not real, but neither are Bob or Marla. That Narrator (his name in the credits) is hallucinating all of this, and what's really happening is he's coming to terms with specifically testicular cancer. A lot of references to cancer and balls in the movie. Marla and Tyler are opposites, the feminine and masculine sides of the narraror, as he fights with losing his masculinity and having to accept his feminine side. Might be a stretch, but there's videos out there that explain it better than I can.
The fan theory(s) that B0ob and.or Marla are not real is wholly unsupported by literally everyone who made this film and by the author fo the novel it's based on, and holds zero water.
My FAVORITE movie! Watching you guys notice the "twists" without realizing the huge twist is all of us whb saw this when it came out! Its one of the few movies , imo, ever made that is equal to or maybe even better than the book. It was a joy watching you watch this for the first time. My FAVORITE movie!
Great reaction to a great movie. A theory I subscribe to is that he does have testicular cancer and that's why the doctor told him to go to the meeting. Marla and Tyler were him trying to deal with it in different ways: a hyper-masculine rebellion against the impending loss of his testicles and a nihilistic feminine figure willing to let go of everything. And I'm convinced that his name really is Tyler Durden. All the plane tickets had that name.
Thank you so much for your kind words, we appreciate you! Also thank you for the awesome theory as well! Never thought of it that way - that'd definitely track though! Tyler and Marla would represent those parts of himself that Jack would have needed in order to feel in control in his life, not constantly pushed down and so blasé...
If he really had testicular cancer, why would the doctor not just tell him, and why would the film not tell the audience? It's totally open when revealing who Tyler is. How would a doctor he's going to for sleep issues diagnose him with cancer, of all things? This is a film that's already got a huge twist, and people still aren't satisfied, and want there to be more.
@@Corn_Pone_Flicks No, it was. when you get the chance, look into it. I would assume when a person says "They" it would mean the original creators of the story.
After getting out of the theater with our minds completely fried from the experience, my buddy and I came across an upside down car with four people in it, held upside down by their seatbelts and laughing their asses off (they were drunk and had driven into the curve too fast, but they were luckily unscathed). Most surreal evening of my life.
When the Narrator meets Tyler for the first time on the plane, it’s the seventh time that Tyler appears onscreen. Beyond them being clues about how Tyler is slowly becoming more prominent, it’s a sly little reference to Se7en, David Fincher and Brad Pitt’s previous collaboration. It’s fun catching the previous 6 appearances!
3 points: 1) the "Guerilla Terrorist" wasn't Tyler, vs customers, it was the movie vs the audience. 2) Deadpool's random line, "Did I leave the stove on?" comes from this movie. 3) Pitt inverted his role here, to the one he played in Se7en, where a manifested figure teaches valuable Social lessons
I watched this movie in the theater when it first came out. I was one of the few people that guessed that Ed Norton was Tyler Durden. The clincher for me was when Marla called the paper street house. He had given her the number before his condo blew up, how would he give her the number to the paper st house?
But the dialogue in that scene goes: Narrator "how did you find me?" Marla: "you left that forwarding number?" So, the movie gives us an explanation that doesn't involve him giving her that number. And yet you got it from that anyway! :)
@@GoSolar yeah, he had stopped going to meetings and when they parted the last time it was set up so they would not see each other again. His condo blowing up and moving in with "Tyler" all happened after what should have been their final meeting.
@@VictorHarold yeah, but he could set up call forwarding on old phone number after moving in with "Tyler." Then Marla would call his old number, and find him at the new number.
1999 was a very important year in the concept of enlightenment and becoming awakened. This movie was released a few months after The Matrix. Everyone was already buzzing over the concept of "Reality" being an illusion based on going through life programmed with blinders on. Then this movie came along with the shock value that it had on the same type of subject! I think it defined a big chunk of the mindset of an entire generation not wanting to be blinded and lulled into being a mindless zombie of corporations.... Actually I think the popularity of the zombie subject was greatly amplified after this time partially due to these 2 films in general. Watching your reactions was so great. It honestly gave me the vicarious experience of watching it for the first time all over again. Just fantastic. Thanks for that!
I was 13 or 14 when I first saw this and I was blown away, movie changed my perception on reality as I knew it. Watched it far too many times after that but it just never gets old. Love seeing people watching it for the first time, i get to relive that experience again!
i ussualy dont comment very often, but i will have to adress this. this is my favorite movie of all time and now watching you react to it was the same as if i was looking into myself when i saw it first time… tears of joy just went thru me when i see that last scene with PIXIES - Where is my mind? song… im so happy i have stumbled upon this video, thank you guys… (ps. sorry for bad english)
This movie was basically character development for every teenage boy in 1999. I’d credit it being the single biggest influence on the idea of “Maybe we really do consume too much.” Not that we changed that about us (we now consume more than ever) but it’s probably why we feel like hypocrites because we once recognized it was a problem that needed fixing.
Bob's (Robert Paulson) real name is Meat Loaf, kind of a big name in the music industry. One of his trademarks was his weight... but the funny part here is that when they filmed this, he was thin and needed to put on a fat suit. On a related note, this was the second time in his film career that he (Meat Loaf) ended up dead on a dining room table. Pretty sure that is a unique claim in Hollywood. Finally, on an unrelated note... the film is designed to be watched multiple times without the twist ending getting in the way of the viewer's story immersion. Little things you pick up on throughout the film call back to the ending and let you see new things despite knowing the twist. Although, I suspect those that make their living from an ever-changing fan-generated film watch list will have little opportunity or desire to re-watch a film. Thanks for the reaction video, in any event. 😀
Ok, I must admit, I've become a Fan of your reaction videos. Your commentary and honest take on what you're watching. I Dig your appreciation for Awesome Guitar riffs n solos.
This is my #1 All Time Favorite Movie. I literally own 7 copies of this movie and 4 copies of the book, 3 are signed by Chuck Palahniuk. He's my All Time Favorite Author and I love that this movie is now a part of your life!!
44:15 What killed his alter ego was the fact that he had accepted his own death and wasn't scared of it anymore. That is what eliminated the need for his alter ego completely. At the beginning of the film the protagonist was incapable of confronting the reality of life, which includes suffering/pain and death. He was constantly numbing himself with distractions like television, trying to fill a void with ikea, and trying to make himself experience real, vital emotion with the support groups. But it was all cheap substitutes. Deep down he was trying not to think about what the reality of life is. But because he wasn't able to confront life he wasn't fully living. He was basically sleepwalking through life, and that's why he couldn't sleep: he was never fully awake, so he couldn't be fully asleep either. He was nihilistic because nothing really mattered to him. He convinced himself that he cared so much about the ikea stuff because there was nothing else. There was no real external expression of his vitality and his mind created the illusion that the ikea furniture was it. There was nothing in his life that really mattered to him because there was nothing that he was willing to die for. There was no meaning, and his mind filled that void with material things. And that's why the first thing his alter ego did was to blow up his apartment, to destroy the illusion of meaning so he could focus on the real thing. He wanted to destroy the dream, or the nightmare, he had created (his fake life) to wake him up. The same thing he was trying to achieve with the acts of vandalism in the city, he was trying to destroy the shared delusion people live in, to wake them up. His alter ego was an outlet for his vitality, it was trying to break the protagonist's mental barriers through self-harm and pain, trying to destroy his need for control and safety. Because life is not safe, life is suffering, and trying to control everything to make it safe and comfortable is a way of avoiding the reality of life. When you do that you are not fully living. That was the point of fight club: you give everything you have in a fight and you accept what comes with it, that's life. Notice that before their first fight his alter ego said "I have never been in a fight, and you? I don't want to die without any scars", which is another way of saying "I have never really lived, and you? I don't want to die without living". In the car scene his alter ego said "you need to let go" (the need for control) before crashing the car, and called it "a near life experience", the point being: accept that you will die so you can actually live. The point of the chemical burn was: accept the pain, instead of masking it with illusions. In other words, accept life and everything that comes with it and live, don't delude yourself to hide from it. At the end of the film the protagonist was finally willing to accept his death, not as a fantasy because his life was meaningless and he thought he wanted to die (like when he daydreamed about the plane crashing), but because he actually cared about something and was making a fully conscious decision to die for it. That's when his alter ego finally had no reason to exist anymore.
So many little hints here and there that the first time through you dismiss as meaningless, but on later viewings are so significant. My favorite is when he's beating himself up in his boss' office, and the action pauses for a moment while he comments that "for some reason" it reminds him of his first fight with Tyler. Of course it does. He was beating the crap out of himself then, too.
The funniest thing when you watch the movie second time is that since the beggining there's so many clues the narrator and Tyler are the same person, It was in front of us from the start and we didn't see it coming
The ending. Tyler said just let go when they crashed. He did. He was willing to die, a gun to his his head. But he survived. And as TD said after the crash, 'You just survived a near life experience

Nobody expects Fight Club because you do not talk about Fight Club.
@08:22 Tyler was referencing the real-life thing that happened between John and Lorena Bobbitt.
You guys referenced the matrix at 2:48 I laughed so hard 🤣🤣
There are a lot of hints through the whole film that they're the same person, most of them in scenes involving Marla. But to me the most interesting one is when he's hitting himself in the boss' office and he says it for some reason reminded him of his first fight with Tyler
you know what? if my theory not wrong, when he hitting himself is actually he doesn't fake it, but he actually hit by his split Tyler (Brad Pitt), cmiiw
There are soooooo many hints
The biggest hint was when Tyler was introduced on the airplane. They both had the same briefcase.
Big hint even in the first scene: “I know this…because Tyler knows this.”
I felt so bad for Marla when rewatching it lol
Fight Club is infinitely rewatchable. Not only are there countless clues and easter eggs but the acting and dialogue is so good that it always captures your attention.
This is gonna be one of those mandatory rewatch every so often films for us. Just too good!

Hahaha no way, that is just gold 😂😂😂

I remember not wanting to believe that anything was awry.
Yup. The movie throws it right in your face the whole time, but no one catches it
I LOVE when a movie has me so engrossed, I'm not even thinking of trying to figure out a twist, or the ending, I'm just along for the ride.
So glad we watched it ❤️
Interesting... It's definitely in my top 3. Now I really have to study the Bhagavad-Gita!
I rented this flick and watched it twice in a row just to grab all the themes and hints and all the little details, definitely agree it's the best way to do it. I can appreciate the Tao present in some of the perspectives too.
Weird.. I love this movie too and I bought the book after even though I don't like reading. That and I have read at least the intro to Bhagavad Gita when I was friends with some Krishnas.
that's amazing dude. i can definitely see the parallels now that you mention it.
Chuck has said that the film was better than his novel. What an endorsement of my favorite Fincher film.
Apparently his name is "Jack". You can read it in the scripts.
@@SwissMarksman nah he's only identified as "the narrator."
In the comic book sequel his name is Cornelius. But yeah, when I saw it in the theater, about half way through I noticed the lack of name thing too.
@@louislickaii5924 I read that too. It wasn't very good lol
@@mokane86 He is, they continued fight club in a comic format.
With multiple personality disorder, the other personality still wants to survive. Showing that you're willing to destroy both personalities can be enough to shock the other into retreating. Not recommended by therapists (obviously).
Tyler's monologue in the middle of the movie is one of those movie moments that really, REALLY made me think. It was just... wow.

Then decide if Marla is real or another alter.
and also realise how glaringly obvious it is from the very beginning that Tyler isnt real
Never thought about Marla being imaginary too 😮
@@youtubeusername5 Probably because the filmmakers never intended it, nor did the author of the book. I never buy fan theories about things the film itself never cops to. There's four commentaries on the disc, and none of them even suggest this.

I think "The Prestige" also falls into that same category.

@31:23 -- I've never heard it articulated exactly that way. That was a really great point about the irony that they've all become anonymous slaves to a new system under Tyler when they were trying to escape that feeling. Always love seeing people's first reactions to Fight Club. You guys rock.

He was already switching out
Yeah, in that time he prepare the stuff to blow his apartment

Best clue in Fight Club is where he is beating himself up in the boss' office and it pauses to say "for some reason this reminds me of my first fight with Tyler".
Did you recognise Jared Leto as Blondie ?
I don't usually like reaction videos but for some reason, I can't help but click that like button for this one.

Interesting theory
False theory.
The writers already confirmed Marla is real, not just in Tyler's head, so that alone destroys this theory.
Love your reaction and the realization on your faces. One of my favorite TH-cam Reactors now.
(WhatisAntilogic: Fight club: The twist that no one noticed)
Very intriguing
Fun theory but extremely unlikely, I mean you can pretty much come up with anything theory you want about fight club because the narrator is so unreliable (because he’s insane) but imo bob and Marla are 100% real people
I've come across a similar theory, but only pertaining to Marla. They (Tyler and Marla) represent the masculine vs feminine struggle that the narrator faces. I find it plausible, due to the scene with Marla standing in traffic. The cars go by as if she isn't there.
I remember watching this for the first time a couple years ago, and it still remains one of my favorite movies
What about when the minions brought her up to the building at the end?
@@popejaimie There are no little yellow guys in this movie you silly goose.
What makes me doubt about that IS that when he met marla, he hadn't insomnia. It came back after
@@popejaimie they don't exist either
@@danet2456 so the theory is the movie never happened and he hallucinated the whole thing? Incredibly boring theory, I hate it
The best twist foreshadowing line to me is his narration as hes getting on the plane when we are introduced to tyler says "If you wake up at a different time, and a different place, could you wake up a different person?" And while hes beating himself up in his bosses office "For some reason I thought of my first fight with Tyler". The one most commonly cited is the note on the payphone reading "no incoming calls" as hes answering Tylers call.
Congrats on 10K!!! I'm so happy for you! And this reaction is gold, it's been a long time since I watched Fight Club and your reaction to the twist was perfection.
Awww thank youuu!!! You have no idea how much it means to us to see our baby channel grow, especially with the support of wonderful people such as yourself! We are so glad you enjoyed our reaction, it means the world!!!
The fact that you pulled a Tyler Durden with the like and subscribe animation is everything.
34:50 I LOVE how the realisation hit them lmao
This movie's got its dull bits, but then there are these mind-blowing cinematic gems that just make it my absolute favorite. And let me tell you, watching your reaction was a good trip, especially seeing you navigate through the plot twist without a clue.
Another great movie choice. You guys select all the bangers btw! Hope you two are doing great! Congrats on the 10K. Hope to see 100K soon!
Thank you! We have a bunch of amazing films we now have the great opportunity to catch up on. It’s kind of our filmmakers homework haha and honestly we’re so glad we did! Thank you so much! Reaching 10k was a goal we dreamed about when talking about this channel and thanks to all of your incredible support here we are. Good to see you around! We’re doing great and we hope you are too😃
@@OfficialMediaKnights Glad to hear it. Started watching you guys early on and will try to support you as much as I can.
I like the surprise intro 10 minutes into the review 🤣
Hahah, gotta keep ya on your toes you know 😂😂😂
@@OfficialMediaKnights bold
I love the car ride scene...because the dialogue works on THREE levels. Tyler is talking to (1)narrator (2)audience and (3)THE TWO GUYS IN THE BACK....and the dialogue works for ALL THREE, no matter which one you are! "Forget especially what you THINK you know about you and me...."
Has anyone told you Brad Pitts reaction to getting punched in the ear was genuine ..it always makes me smile lol
Hahaha wait what?! We didn't know that that is HILARIOUS!!! 😂😂😂😂
Yeah, it wasn't supposed to be a real punch, but the director told him to land a real punch it was unexpected and the reaction was genuine
44:01 i see the subliminal "like" frame. I respect it lol.
Hahaaa thank you!! Glad you caught that!
32:45 your confused faces!! this is why i watch reaction videos. this is one of the best ive seen.
A fabulous movie and it's in my top 5 films ever. I don't think Brad Pitt gets enough credit for crushing this role. It turns out, some people REALLY DO have it all.
Oh absolutely, he just shone in this part!! What a charismatic and subtly disturbing performance!!
I re-watched this video and saw the little 'clips' into your video. I didn't notice it the first time! This movie is so crazy... And in my library.
One of the best movies ever made. Absolute classic.
His name is Robert Paulson
Subbed. Two rectors who don’t spend the run time of a movie trying to predict the next step! 🙌Nice.
This movie is perfect.
nice effect you did with the subscribe button apearnig for just a sec like in the movie :)
Nice catch! Was wondering if someone would catch that eventually 😄
@@OfficialMediaKnights Oh I caught it too. GREAT touch!
@@OfficialMediaKnights Oh yeah I saw it too. "You're Mr Durden" may be the first time. Nice tribute 👌
OK, I'll stop commenting this video one day...
Me too. Crippling is a great description.
Thank you so much for watching! It truly means a lot to us. We both have had our fair share of insomnia especially during the past 2 years or so. Our sleep schedule is pretty messed up. Slowly getting better now after being more disciplined of when we go to sleep. Glad to hear you sorted it out!
You should have asked if the doctor that finally helped you had seen fight club
And the way that the truth is shown or told in little bits that just pass by us and we don't even notice is really well done. "For some reason i thought about my first fight with Tyler".
If you guys liked this and want more Chuck, they made a passable adaptation of his other novel Choke with the inimitable Sam Rockwell in it… slightly funnier version of a story about someone addicted to a weird thing again. The books are almost always better but it’s worth a watch if you liked this one
The first punch on “Tyler” was his ear… the wound he gives himself at the end exits the ear… the Tyler part.
Tyler and Marla would represent those parts of himself that Jack would have needed in order to feel in control in his life, not constantly pushed down and so blasé...
his name IS tyler durden. They continued fight club in a comic book.
@@jasonfields7058 Who is "they?" Did Chuck Palahniuk have anything to do with it, because if not, it's just fanfic.
Seventh? I thought there were only three before that. Two still frames, and one in that commercial saying "welcome!"
@@GoSolar Yeah, there are 4 still-frames and two in-person appearances before he talks to the Narrator on the plane!
3 points:
1) the "Guerilla Terrorist" wasn't Tyler, vs customers, it was the movie vs the audience.
But the dialogue in that scene goes:
Narrator "how did you find me?"
Marla: "you left that forwarding number?"
So, the movie gives us an explanation that doesn't involve him giving her that number.
@@GoSolar ahhh, so my ignorance of even simple technology helped me solve a twist in a screenplay.
Why did the intro start at 9:32 ?
Watching this as someone who thinks of this as a guilty pleasure film, y’all are SO entertaining. I wouldn’t have been able to keep my mouth shut! 🤣
I was 13 or 14 when I first saw this and I was blown away, movie changed my perception on reality as I knew it. Watched it far too many times after that but it just never gets old. Love seeing people watching it for the first time, i get to relive that experience again!
The commentaries are top notch. Brad, Norton, Fincher. I used to fall asleep to this.
i ussualy dont comment very often, but i will have to adress this.
this is my favorite movie of all time and now watching you react to it was the same as if i was looking into myself when i saw it first time…
tears of joy just went thru me when i see that last scene with PIXIES - Where is my mind? song… im so happy i have stumbled upon this video, thank you guys…
(ps. sorry for bad english)
What do you think those men should now?
Ah, man. I love this movie. It’s one of the BEST written films. So awesome to see you guys watch it for the first time!
WOW!!! Thank you so so much for such a thoughtful analysis, this was such a joy to read! We couldn't have phrased it better!
actually he killed Ed Norton and becomes Tyler
So many little hints here and there that the first time through you dismiss as meaningless, but on later viewings are so significant. My favorite is when he's beating himself up in his boss' office, and the action pauses for a moment while he comments that "for some reason" it reminds him of his first fight with Tyler. Of course it does. He was beating the crap out of himself then, too.
Right?! This is just that movie that changes entirely upon rewatch, which just makes it better and better every time!
Watched this three weeks in a row in the theater, then bought the disc when it came out! Great movie! in my top ten!
