  • How To Catch A Big Sheepshead Easily With Dock Snails - watch the fish - he's looking for dock snails so you should too! Help him! Sheepshead have prominent teeth, including molars which they use to grind shell. Sheepshead are an inshore species, readily seen, but seldom caught easily due to their extreme bait stealing tactics. What I do: cast in, preferably with no sinker, watch the line as the bait sinks - any twitching, set the hook, you have a sheepshead on! The biggest sheepshead appear in winter - April, though large ones are always sporadically about anytime. Best bait as shown is a simple snail - sheepshead are familiar with them, and are looking for them on docks. The black crab that climbs out on docks and sometimes winds up in boats is the preferred type of fiddler crab (though regular fiddler crabs from the sand are readily taken). This might change the game where I fish! I usually use mud crabs and barnacles but I think this might be just watch these big sheep want. Thanks for this video

      You're welcome - something not widely known: redfish can be seen picking these off the bayonet grass in the salt marsh.

      Your welcome. Only one problem with the snails: if it's a really cold winter, they can thin out fast.

    Interesting video. I fish for sheepshead alot and use fiddlers. I'm on the seawall under a pier. Works pretty well but the largest I have had, given little experience, was 17 inches. I'll have to look into that attractor too. The snails are new info for me.

      @mattmattsongold  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      They love those fiddler crabs, they are the time tested standard no doubt and work every time, but I did have better luck on the huge ones (8 pounds and up) with snails, and have observed their heads coming out of the water to pluck them off grass shoots on the flats. The surprising thing to me was seeing redfish do this as well. The attractor works wherever it goes - we are now on fresh water and it is attracting speckled perch (crappie). Good luck out there!

      Matt Mattson Matt, I agree, the first time I ate Sheepshead I was surprised , wonderful firm tasty white meat. I think it is from all the crustaceans they eat.

      BIOCONSULT COMERCIO Y CONSULTORIA C.A. - I haven't, but I suspect their cousin the Jolthead Porgy would bite them readily too. There is one problem I didn't realize when filming - those snails apparently go dormant in the dead of winter. They'll probably (I sure hope) re-appear when it warms in late February and that will be prime time for Sheepshead here in Fl.

    I've always crushed and separate the shell. It leaves you with the trapdoor must've and fat. Bluegills love it.

      +You Can't Polish A Turd : got it. Thanks, I hadn't thought of using freshwater mussels for bluegill - excellent tip. What we see with these sheephead is they are consistently much larger when caught with the snails. Shrimp, barnacles, all work too - but for a whopper, go with the snail. Perhaps you have noticed larger bluegill prefer the mussels? If so, that isn't just an excellent tip - it's a great one!

    Matt Great video !! do you know what kind of snail that is ?? just curious ... Thanks

    • @mattmattsongold
      @mattmattsongold  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary: these appear to be the common Periwinkle Snail (I am by no means an expert). I was simply curious as well and started matching up what I saw with pictures and that appears to be it (or the smaller variant). We had a bench and would watch them look for these snails and pick them off the seawall - quite fun to see.

      freedomforever45 : they're good at that . . . Where we are the snails are coming out in force now that winter is over and we're going to do the same. Was tough to find them in Jan/February. Very best of luck!

      +Ralph Viz : That is possible - try it and let us know. I do know redfish eat them, so I don't see why a drum wouldn't.
