    Great info.... Thank you! I am fairly new to all this gun stuff. I never had anyone teach me when I was younger until someone got me in to hunting in '99. fell in love with hunting after. I never thought nothing about what goes along with guns or ammo. Just bought factory ammo and go hunting. And a few years ago I was forced to retired so I got more into guns and shooting. Started reloading shot shells for my shotgun. Learned a lot more about ammo and what goes into reloading your own ammo.... And a year ago I started reloading for my 9mm because what was going on. And I am trying to get equipment and supplies to start reload for my 308 and 30-06 hunting guns. I still trying to learn everything and trying to listen to all these pro shooters saying u need this, u need that, u need to do this and that, I am starting to learn that I don't need to follow what others doing because every gun is different so I need to find what my guns like or don't like... Thank you!

    Since he's so receptive to education, I'm going to give him the best lesson:
    Bring the right gun!
    It can happen to anyone and I've gone to the range with the right gun and the wrong ammo, you just need to extend that OCD from your reloads to your load out.
    Don't try to reinvent the wheel, just figure out who makes the best wheels and how they make them.
    A friend of mine was reloading by trial and error for years with poor results and I've been telling him about OCW ladders for a long time. He's finally starting to change his strategy.
    I don't know why people can get a bad idea stuck so deep in their head that they won't consider alternatives. My friend can see benchrest and other match shooters having so much success but he would not look at the basic things they do different to get there...
    I look at it this way: successful match shooters use what works and their methods are designed to figure out what works quickly so they aren't wasting components or barrel life trying to find something that works. That's what makes it worth copying in whole or at least in part.
    With that said, as a metal fabricator, I think case prep is much more technique than tooling. A $30 die is probably going to be dimensionally almost as good from one to the next as a $150 die. If they are both designed to do the same thing, they will do the same thing. The trick is finding the die that's ground to do what your brass needs. An Area 419 press is really nice but a Rock Chucker or a Lee Classic Cast should get you to the same place if your technique is correct, you control your process well and start with consistent components.
    When you get to benchrest accuracy, I'm sure every little thing matters but if you just want really good, there are only about 6-8 things you really need to control. If you get those 6-8 things right all the other details will be right or close enough.
    Again, as a metal fabricator, I want to break up the process in to individual steps that I can control so that I'm forming each part of the case minimally and only once, in a way that I can measure and sort at several points in the process. This way inconsistency can be sorted out and errors can be tracked back to the previous step. When you cull bin stays empty and you ammo is shooting right, your process is right.

    So I loaded my 308 Omark just off the lands X10 shots 4thou jumps for 10 rounds.
    Skipped 20thou then loaded 30 rounds with a 4 thou jump. Shot them in 5 round groups and found the accuracy node with the last 8 or so rounds that I shot.
    Now I have 3 shot groups loaded up. 3thou apart.
    I can't wait to load up 30 rounds and shoot them at 400 yards to see how consistent they are :)

    • @wilfdarr
      @wilfdarr 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eric was saying in his “chasing lands” video that nodes are usually about 6thou apart, so if you're skipping 20thou you're likely skipping over good nodes.

    I didn't catch where he's from in NM. I live, work, and fly in the NW corner (FMN) and I've practiced cross wind landings and landed 20 kts from the left and rolled out with 20kts from the right. It's a great place to learn the wind. With mesas and valleys all over the place the wind is variable. The wind flows like really low viscosity (thin) water. I'll be back in Weimar, TX by May and I'm looking forward to getting back into reloading and shooting with the info I'm learning on this channel.

    When you are talking about getting custom expander mandrels, do you account for spring back ? So should I go 2 1/2 thousands to get 2 thousands after spring back. Or after annealing do you really not get spring back? Asking for your experience. Thank you. I really have enjoyed your videos and the way you teach handloading. I was taught by an old timer and he was set in his ways. I am seeing the light and you make things simple 😃

    • @ErikCortina
      @ErikCortina  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With expander mandrels, the brass springs back the other way. So if you want 0.002” neck tension, you may need to go with 0.0015” under bullet diameter. The amount of spring back has to do with how much you are expanding the brass.
